Why is Oboro grinning while on top of Hakuoro? Read on for the non-gay explanation

The licensing of Utawarerumono by ADV into “Shadow Warrior Chronicles” wasn’t exactly the best news I had heard all summer. However, with official DVD releases you often get packed in extras like the Mai HiME yuri specials we all prayed to Haruhi for or the hilarious Shana-tan omake. This time around we get a hilarious 7 minute skit that singlehandedly revived my faith in utaware after the whole mecha addition, and shot Aruruu up on my bishoujo rankings.

Synopsis:

The emperor of war and love alike, Hakuoro, is being bogged down by <strike>paper</strike> scroll work and quickly decides to take a break and grab a snack. After venturing into the storeroom and finding nothing to subdue his hunger, Oboro comes to his aid. Also there with the intention of snacking, Oboro knows that Eruruu is smarter than to leave food lying around to be nicked. He quickly shoves aside a box revealing a hidden door filled with goodies. After devouring their light snacks, Oboro hears Eruruu incoming and hides in a pot…on top of Hakuoro (See, he’s not gay ^^).

Eruruu, upon seeing that her stash has been discovered, is a little concerned seeing as the food that Oboro and Hakuoro just ate was spoiled and she was planning to throw it out. With a little concern for the poor souls who ate it, she leaves the storeroom. Realizing they’re screwed, Hakuoro and Oboro lament their mistake while the onset of diarrhea begins, as does the race to the washroom…and by “race” I mean the slow penguin like waddling that arises from trying to hold in an explosion of bodily waste XD

Upon arrival to the coveted washroom, they realize their mistake in both coming to the same one. The negotiations begin peacefully as both explain their reasoning as to why they should go first, but quickly escalates as swords and fan are drawn…only to be subdued by their increasingly painful stomach aches.

But what’s that in the distance? Hakuoro sees an incoming loli-furry, it’s Aruruu! Screaming for her daddy and getting a running start, Hakuoro knows what’s coming. Thinking quickly, he grabs Oboro and uses him as a human shield as Aruruu dives head first into his stomach. Ouch. With Oboro down for the count, Hakuoro takes a moment to honour his friend’s sacrifice. Taking advantage of her daddy’s speech, Aruruu walks into the bathroom as Hakuoro screams in distress. Finish with a random shot of Yuzuha and that’s that.

Thoughts:

This special was made of more win than the entire official season combined, with the exception of possibly episode 1 & 2. I laughed for a good 5 minutes when I first witnessed Aruruu’s headbutt and have played it over and over since. Aruruu is now officially the cutest loli of 2006, headbutting her way past Kyon’s imouto and the pink haired tsunderekko Louise.

If only the main storyline had more moments like these instead of crazy plot twists, endless conquests and random mechas. With few episodes remaining and too many storylines to tie up, I doubt we’ll see anything akin to this special in the main series. But with numerous DVDs to be released, we can only hope that the attatched specials will be as hilarious as this.

Synopsis:

We start off just where we left off, Tusukuru is about to get its metaphorical butt handed to itself on a platter. As the army of <strike>EVAs</strike> <strike>Arm Slaves</strike> Avu Kamuu march towards the town, Hakuoro’s usually invincible army is being beaten beyond pulp. Even boulder reinforced ballistas do nothing as the Avu Kamuu swat ground troops away effortlessly.

Hakuoro realizes that there won’t be enough time to evacuate everyone and draws up a plan to lure the Avu Kamuu away and get beaten up for a while as everyone escapes…nice. The rest of the gang won’t stand for that though and continue defending against orders.

Just as Hakuoro seems done for, Aruruu (sorry!) and Mukuru come to his rescue! Only to be severely injured, this makes Hakuoro angry…very angry, you won’t like him when he’s angry. The result? <strike>EVA Unit 00 goes berserk and tears the Angel apart limb by limb</strike> Hakuoro goes berserk and tears the Avu Kamuu apart limb by limb. As Hauenkua runs away crying for his mommy, we get a…flashback/parallel universe scene where Aruruu is injured and Eruruu agrees to sacrifice her body and soul to what looks like Hakuoro’s mecha to save her. Also, we get a flashforward/parallel universe scene where two scientists, one who sounds much like Hakuoro, observing Hakuoro’s petrified mecha and spewing out randomness about its place in evolution.

The next morning, Hakuoro wakes up in a “dream in a dream” nightmare sequence to find Eruruu serving him tea. Obviously confused because the last memory he probably had was a huge red foot about to land on them, he asks Eruruu what happened. Apparently Kunnekamun ran away with their tails between their legs and the evacuation was called off. Aaaand Aruruu is fine and running around in the courtyard, despite being slashed by some rather large claws just a day earlier.

Thoughts:
Mixed feelings about this episode, I’m really not liking the mecha integration, it’s just not making sense to me. They have also made battle sequences rather lame, ground troops can obviously do nothing as their swords crack and arrows bounce when faced with metal plating. As for the mechXmech battles, they’re too much like Evangelion. The mechas didn’t look organic when shown before, but all of a sudden you get some very EVA-like limb tearing and blood spatters.

On the up side, the plot seems to be progressing at a pretty accelerated rate as has been the case with Utaware pretty much all the way through. This means that there aren’t many wasted scenes, sure they may be confusing as hell, but at least the action is consistent and fast paced. However, I have no idea where they’re going with their storyline now. They’ve set numerous things up to be explained, but there’s barely any time left to address them all:

- Origins of the mechas
- Hakuoro’s past…and possibly future?
- Eruruu/Aruruu past
- Link between the beast and evolution
- Kamyu vampiricism
- Rogue agent of the winged race

How can they possibly cover all these things in detail with only four episodes remaining? I think they’ve been a little too ambitious with Utaware. Sure the ‘new nation -> new emperor -> war -> new castle’ template was predictable, but at least it was easy to explain and develop. With mechas, fossilized evolutionary links, vampiricism and random shots of advanced technology showing up in the end stretch, Utaware seems to be on the path to a Gainax Ending.

On an episode by episode basis, Utaware is doing just fine, but as a whole, I think it has dug itself into a hole from which is cannot escape, mechas or none.

I apologize to all Eruruu and Aruruu fanboys for the mistake ^^”

True fear is indicated by the screaming for one’s mama

“Utawaremono” *right click* *rename* “Neon Genesis Evangelion”

This one’s just to satisfy my inner Touka fanboy =D

Victories

- Well paced action
- Character development seems to be going fine
- Hakuoro, he was cool in this episode (though his sarcasm is far from Kyon level funny)
- Aruruu, brave, cute, innocent and loyal <3
- "Help me! Help me! Mama! Mama!" Ahahahahaha, yes!

Phailures

- Mechas, they’re not working out at all
- Battle scenes, boring to watch ground troops get slaughtered or EVA ripoffs
- Story pacing, there’s no way they can tie up all these loose ends
- Hauenkua didn’t die D=
- No Kuuya screentime? Tsk tsk

Anime producers sure know how to start series off on the right foot, but they always seem to fall apart at the ending. Let’s hope Utaware can pull out of this nosedive, but barring some really random deus ex machina, I don’t see how they’re going to pull it off…but time will tell.

Synopsis:

Looks like Hakuoro’s intuition was right again, Kunnekamun has become a nation of war. It begins with Hauenkua (creepy emperor v3.0) attacking the tribal nation from episode 20 without the emperor’s permission. This leads to suggestion from Hauenkua that Kunnekamun should conquer all other countries to ensure their survival and peace. This suggestion is countered by the other general, Hien, who would rather see other countries united under Kunnekamun to ensure their survival and peace…basically the same deal, and they both know it. But they both get slapped in the face by the walking STFU that is Genjimaru, who talks some sense into Kuuya, saying that fortifying their borders is more important than conquest.

Following all that tenseness there’s a slight lull in action where Hakuoro strolls around checks on everyone in Tusukuru. Of course that means we get some Karura and, more importantly, Touka screentime! *cheers*

Of course this is just the calm before the storm as Benawi informs Hakuoro that despite Kunnekamun having shown their power, two nations have combined forces and have started their advance. We don’t even get to see the battle this time, it’s just a straight cut to the aftermath of the massacre. If that wasn’t bad enough, to reinforce how coldhearted Kunnekamun is becoming, they won’t even show mercy to their own peasants, who are suffering the collateral damage of the battles.

Of course we can’t go a whole half episode without a midnight talk with Kuuya, this time Eruruu is used as the messenger XD Kuuya starts spewing some nonsense about the beauty of the moon and using it as an anology to link it to their god and etc. Hakuoro isn’t buying it though, and presses on to the subject at hand, their increasing love for war. Hakuoro reminds Kuuya that she is not alone and that when faced with difficult decisions she always has Genjimaru and Sakuya to act as her voice of reason.

Despite the talk just a short while earlier, the next day Kuuya decides to send out <strike>an announcement of unison</strike> a declaration of war. The decision spurred by the fact that the strengthening of borders is only inviting more attacks and her people are suffering. Without Genjimaru or Sakuya to act as her conscious, she decides that this course of action is best.

Upon hearing the news, Hakuoro orders the strengthening of the borders and preparation for engagement. In the meantime, Kuuya plans to advance on Onkami Yamukai (the winged dudes). Genjimaru warns her that if they attack Onkami, the house of Witsarnemitea, that they will segregate themselves with everyone else who considers them thei guardians. Kuuya understands this, but also knows that they have already separated themselves from the rest of the world.

On the march to Onkami Yamukai, the winged race summons an attack on the advancing mechas. It seems that it’s working quite well until the rogue winged agent shows up and dispels the chant, apparently his name is Dii. After some awkward bentering and the use of unknown and lengthy terms the scene cuts to the fall of Onkami Yamukai.

With that out of the way, Kuuya marches on Tusukuru and towards Hakuoro. Apparently she is going with the intention of regaining his friendship, but with an army and mechas in tail, it hardly seems like it. Hakuoro thinks it’s best to evacuate the capital while they stay behind and buy some time. Everyone unanimously agrees that Hakuoro should evacuate as well, since he seems to be the main target of the invasion. And so with that, the gang heads out to intercept the incoming force, only to be greeted with mechas. Despite their brave and courageous taglines, I’m pretty sure they were all thinking what I was thinking: “We’re so screwed”. Anddddd, cue cliffhanger ending.

Typical, but oh so awesome, episode.

Thoughts:

Although the mechas really aren’t that great to me, this episode was still pretty damn good. It was pretty much the Utaware that I’ve come to love. Some nonsensical spouting of names that seem to be a mashing together of any syllables that work, some global conquest and a healthy amount of Touka, all is well.

I think that Kuuya is a fairly weak emperor, emotionally. She can’t make decisions on her own and ends up defaulting to the one that seemingly hurts the least, but really hurts the most. She sees it as saving her people, but she is destroying other nations, global conquest never works out for the best. The dual personality seems to work well with her though, on the battle field she’s merciless, and off she’s confused and scared. Though she’s beginning to become a warlord off the field too, it’ll be interesting to see how Hakuoro gets out of this one (and to make him evacuate, it’s has to be pretty bad).

This ep had some screentime for everyone! From Benawi to Kamyu and even the twins, all the characters got a couple of scenes of screentime, quite awesome. Of course Touka got some much needed attention, all we need is some more of her dere dere and I’ll melt into a puddle of joy.

Also, Utaware pulled a Honey & Clover on us and left us with a little teaser scene with Hakuoro holding a seemingly dead Eruruu Aruruu (oops, my mistake) in his arms. I guess this is a new fad, not to say that it isn’t working, but it’s oh so cruel T_T Hang in there Eruruu Aruruu!

Screw everthing else, to make up for the last ep, screencap section is dedicated to Touka =D

Touka fanboyism on the rise! Will she be able to topple Haruhi for the #2 spot on the bishoujo rankings? Will her dere dere ever be seen again? Stay tuned for the next episode of Dragon Ba…I should really stop doing that >.>

Victories

- Touka! Of course
- Everyone else?
- Power of the Onkami Yamukai, just goes to show that you never screw with winged people…unless you have a more powerful one
- Variation on battle scenes! Yay, they listened
- Uh…Touka?

Phailures

- Creepy emperor, it’s getting old and it was never good in the first place
- Kuuya, what’s happening to the innocence T_T
- Mechas, not growing on me at all =\
- Names picked out of a medical dictionary (I have to keep the episode open as a reference just to remember them)
- Death teaser scene, so cruel =(

People just don’t understand that you can use the gates instead of sneaking in, then again, it’d eliminate 90% of the comic relief provided in Utaware. This episode starts off with an unknown intruder sneaking into the Hakuoro estate, it’s a female so of course there’s no immediate danger. Dodging multitudes of spears, and losing a nice chunk of hair, she arrives at Hakuoro’s room where it’s revealed she’s a messenger of Kuuya (Hakuoro’s late night emperor affair, if you’ve forgotten…like I did) Seems like the old general is on vacation or something, so instead they send her daughter, Sakuya.

This meeting is a little different, however, since our resident party crasher is tagging along, unknown to Hakuoro. After some useless banter, Kuuya asks Hakuoro is he’d like to take Sakuya as a concubine, Eruruu faints in the background and the comedic relief blooms. With Eruruu’s cover blown, she introduces herself to the bishoujo emperor. Back to the subject at hand, Kuuya insists that Sakuya is hard working and very skilled in bed matters ;) …meaning of course that she’s adept at making the bed. Eruruu and Sakuya take her words in a different matter, as did most of the Utaware viewers over 13 -.-” But after the misunderstanding and Hakuoro brand logic, Kuuya rethinks her decision to hand over Sakuya, nice call.

Benawi time! This guy doesn’t get nearly enough screen time for the amount of ass he kicked earlier in the series. Benawi reports that a small tribal country is thinking of attacking Kunnekamun, Kuuya’s nation. This alone would not be cause for worry, but their ally is Noseshechika, one of the three most powerful nations. But not to worry! There are rumors that Kunnekamun has <strike>the lambda driver</strike> a yet revealed power at their dispense.

Moving right along to the battle scene. In the blue corner! A fair sized army, spears drawn and raptor/horse things ready to charge. In the red corner! Three armed and ready M9 Gernsback and one ARX-7 Arbalest…wait…WHAT!? Just when I thought Utaware had all the bases covered, they throw in some mecha for good measure. So of course the mechs completely destroy the enemy platoon and go on to conquer Noseshechika in a mere three days.

After all is said and done, Kuuya calls Hakuoro out to regale him with a detailed description of how she tore one of the three most powerful nations apart. Hakuoro seems distraught at the sight of the once innocent emperor becoming a war hungry savage. Kuuya excuses herself, reminding him that it was her first battle and the feeling is new to her.

And so, with Noseshechika out of the way, all that remains is the small tribal country that threatened Kunnekamun in the first place. However, this country sends a message to Hakuoro informing him that they were forced to oppose Kunnekamun by their allies and wish to resolve the issue in peace. Hakuoro understands and sends Urotorii to negotiate.

Cue the entrance of yet another creepy emperor archetype…*sigh* As a spokesman for Kuuya, he says that they will crush the small nation to set an example (as if pwning one of the three most powerful nations doesn’t get it across) He also personally attacks Urotorii by saying that their leader is nothing but a false god.

In the middle of all this there’s a really odd sideplot where Kamyu went all vampirical on Aruruu and sucked her blood…right, I’m as confused as you are. So she runs away, only to be found at her usual midnight spot at the lake where everything is reconciled and forgiven. I don’t know what to say about that part, it was just weird =\

All in all, some typical Utaware warfare and some not so typical mecha and vampiricism, an alright episode.

Thoughts:

An odd but fairly good episode, I never would have thought that Utaware would be able to incorporate mecha into an already vast array of genres…but hey, whatever works. It wasn’t the most subtly incorporated of elements, but it wasn’t all that bad, so I’ll go along with it for now. If it turns out that the technology was brought from the future by a time traveling battle waitress though, I’m dropping this series XD

At the very least, the mechas forced some new battle animation, which is always much needed. We also saw some screen time for some relegated characters like Benawi and Aruruu, so that was a plus. I’m also beginning to warm up to Eruruu again, now that I’ve gotten used to her being a spoilsport, it’s actually kinda funny once you get past it ruining so many opportunities for some comedy.

The whole Kamyu thing came out of nowhere though, and personally, I wouldn’t remain friends with someone that tried to suck my blood…that’s just me though. I hope they fullly explain what the deal with Kamyu is, because they have set it up for her own backstory, but with only 6 episodes remaining, I’m not sure how well that’ll work out.

The most unforgiveable sin of this episode? NO TOUKA OR KARURA…that’s just wrong. That’s like having an episode of Haruhi without Mikuru, although it did happen once, it’s just so very wrong T_T

Check the most recent posts, I’m pretty much up to date on Utaware.

Synopsis:

We start off with a flashback to a family fleeing a burning castle with pursuers on their tails (literally XD). The sister of this unknown family urges her brother and a guardian to use an underground waterway to escape as she holds up the pursuit. So basically we have a 4 minute opening of not so subtle hints at Karura<strike>uwaturei</strike>’s past.

Back to the present, we join team Hakuoro and the rebellion in the middle of a raid. *insert typical battle scene* and with that everyone is happy and free, albeit a little tired. As night falls the team plans their attack when all of a sudden commotion stirs outside as lotus flowers flow downstream. This reminds Karura<strike>uwaturei</strike> of the underground waterway, while her moronic brother is left wondering how she knew about it. And so the plan is to use the seemingly weak and useless rebellion platoon to distract the enemy troops while team Hakuoro run in and kill the emperor…they use this plan a lot.

As the attack begins the coast is clear for the assassination of the emperor…until they hit the throne room, which is guarded by copious amounts of guards. And so as battle begins it is finally revealed that Karura<strike>uwaturei</strike> is really Karurauwaturei! The former queen of the country. This completely unexpected revelation finally clues Derihourai into the fact that Karura is his long lost aneue. *insert typical battle scene* and hurrah! The emperor is dead, which means Derihourai is the new emperor, and he names the country…Karurauwaturei! ORLY?! NO WAI!

So back in Tusukuru everything is back to normal, Karura opts to turn down her brother’s request to stay with him. Eruruu continues to be a nagging killjoy and Oboro seems to have ditched his <strike>yaoi</strike> archer threesome and returned to the siscon we all know and love. And so the emperor of the newly formed Karurauwaturei comes to offer his thanks to the emperor of Tusukuru. Much to his surprise it’s the one and only Hakuoro, mercenary and emperor, they’re so much alike. After a not so subtle show of concern for his sister, Derihourai leaves. Hakuoro asks Karura if she’s sure about letting her only family leave, Karura refuses and reminds him she’s Hakuoro’s <strike>personal love slave</strike> loyal subject who has sworn everything to him.

Thoughts:

Pretty good episode, much of it was the standard Utaware warfare which I’ve come to neither hate nor love. To their credit the battle scenes are getting a little more creative, they still seem to lack flow, but they’re getting there. As for the foreshadowing…I certainly hope Aqua Plus isn’t trying to be subtle, because they suck at it. From the first time the name was mentioned any fan with a double digit IQ would have realized where they were going with it.

I really question the system of power employed in the world of Utaware. I’m not sure how it was in the past, but if you kill a nation’s leader, usually you become somewhat of an enemy…not the new emperor. I am really surprised that one of Hakuoro’s peasants hasn’t come up to him and stabbed him in the face yet.

Animation and consistency is getting better as this series goes along. Though the cut and paste battles really have to stop, what happened to the good times, where they didn’t have a 8 member army. Flanks! Defence lines! Strategy and tactics! *sigh* I suppose that goes out the window when your generals can singlehandedly take multitudes of troops out instantaneously.

Check the most recent posts, I’m pretty much up to date on Utaware.

With introductions out of the way, it’s time to get to work! Due to this blog coming to life in the middle of the summer season, I’m just going to jump into the chaos and start mid season blogging on anime. With a considerable amount of backlog on completed series and a manga backlog that I haven’t touched, I’m not about to add a blogging backlog for ~5 series. That aside, let’s begin!

Utawarerumono 18

Synopsis:
The episode begins with an attack by a rebel group to free their prisoner of war comrades. The rebels identify themselves as Karurauwaturei…hmmm, why does that name seem familiar =D Cut to the introduction of yet another creepy emperor archetype and we have plot material for another few episodes!
Back at camp Hakuoro the whole gang is enjoying a nice meal. Aruruu is outeating those 4 times her size, Oboro is being forced to eat properly by his <s>yaoi</s> undeniably female love slaves, Benawi is channeling Echizen and Touka is…well…being Touka. Suddenly a messenger arrives, after dodging a Karura smash he delivers a message revealing the events seen earlier in the episode.

Flash forward to night time, Hakuoro enjoys his terrace view (no doubt contemplating if he should go to war for a larger castle) when all of a sudden, Karura appears. Dressed in stark contrast to her usual skintight battle outfit, she has come to ask a favor of Hakuoro. She humbly asks Hakuoro to provide reinforcement to the Karurauwaturie rebellion, in return she offers <s>sexual favors</s> her life, body and soul. Upon witness of Karura’s determination Hakuoro half-reluctantly agrees to do what he can to help the rebellion. And with that, off come Karura’s clothes! But wait, who’s that coming up the stairs to invade Hakuoro’s love nest?! It’s Eruruu of course, the emperor’s one and only party crasher. This “misunderstanding” gives Eruruu about a minute of subsequent screentime in which she gives Hakuoro the silent treatment.

Returning to the plot, Kurou informs Hakuoro that the rebels are being cornered and that it is not long before they are completely wiped out. Being the peace loving emperor he is (lol) Hakuoro asks Karura to understand that nothing good will come of their intervention. Of course Karura will have none of this and later that night kidnaps Hakuoro presumably to drag him into battle. Upon being discovered one by one by Urtri, Touka, Aruruu, Eruruu, Kamyu and Yuzuha you would think they would help their emperor who is currently roll-tied in a blanket…but instead opt to join Karura in her trip.

The rest of the episode is pretty typical of what utaware has offered so far, after some riding around the gang is intercepted by the rebels, the Hakuoro Harem identidifes themselves as mercenaries who have come to help the rebellion. Some unconvincing and unexplained plot development then reveals that Karura’s real name is Karurauwaturei and has some ties to the rebellion. Hakuoro then notices a fire in the forest, which ends up being the rebel camp that is being razed to the ground. Team Hakuoro rushes in to save the day and after some post-battle lecturing from Karura to the rebel leader, the Hakuoro Harem is asked to support the rebellion.

Thoughts:
Though the war theme of this anime bugged me at first because I was expecting a harem anime, I’ve come to accept and like the war-centric plot. The new emperor however…meh. The romance-comedy feel of the first half of the episode was refreshing, although the Eruruu ordeal was rather cliche’d and uninspired in my opinion.

One thing that is bugging me about utaware lately is their use of really long city/god/emperor names without establishing context, I still have no idea who or what Witsarnemitea is. As for the latter half of the episode, though the plot development seems rather forced, I wasn’t expecting much more and therefore enjoyed it quite a bit. The battle scenes are still very cut and paste to me though, save for Urtri’s pancake blast and Karura’s tornado punch, all the other combat manoevers were recycled from a previous episode.

Victories

- Touka and her overbearingness towards Hakuoro <3
- Aruruu, her childish charm always gets to me
- Karura. Melon-pan! Melon-pan!

Phailures

- Eruruu
- The kidnapping scene, very unrealistic. I mean, even Touka nonchalantly tagged along! And what’s with bringing the blind and sickly girl to the frontlines of battle? (Though I’ll admit, I laughed T_T)
- Rushing the plot with little explanation and back story
- The creepy emperor
- Eruruu.
