CLANNAD ~After Story~ 24 [END]

How many times now have they re-dubbed this fucking scene?

Boring recap was boring, but at least you have a choice of watching it or not since the story’s done.

Jay’s Final thoughts

Clannad at times just felt really slow to me, especially during the earlier Fuko and Kotomi arcs but it’s harder to distinguish when the series is a slice-of-life anime anyway and one of the reasons why I enjoy them. The only times that felt like they REALLY wasted time were the Fuko reappearances during the 1st season; although somewhat enjoyable, the significance of them dropped to absolute zero by the time After Story kicked in.

For After Story itself, most of it just continued to be an extension of Clannad, since the actual story wasn’t carried out until less than halfway through the series, and thus can really be considered a 12-episode series. That said, I guess it dispelled my worries that those short amount of episodes wouldn’t be enough to tell the story properly, though, and I’ve mentioned this before, the execution of the links between the real and Illusionary World were very rushed, being resolved less than 5 minutes into the final episode.

Overall, the series had it’s Key-quality and adapted fairly well. I didn’t think it was good as Kanon: as sad as Nagisa and Ushio’s deaths were, Kanon still beats it in number of breakdowns for me, but that’s just me (keep in mind, I haven’t watched AIR yet…so I guess all my credibility is taken away).

Got my fucking picnic scene, but nobody’s even there. O_O

Now for Shirukii’s thoughts…

Dearest KyoAni,

I hate you. Recap episode + 30 seconds of “new” footage a finale does not make.

Cheers,
~ Shirukii ~

Post Script: Despite your lackluster rendition of this series, I still eagerly await your Little Busters anime. Don’t fuck it up.

Jay: …Well, fine. ] :

I agree though: Little Busters! better be coming up soon. Preferably before Lucky Star K-ON! ends.

I’ll disagree. I liked the recap, it brought back a lot of old memories of the show. The way they fit it as a frame story, with Tomoya actually telling it, was a nice way to actually fit the recap within the story (and give us an excuse for more Ushio). The new footage brought a smile to my face, too. Nagisa calling Fuko “Fu-chan” made me particularly happy.

As for final thoughts, the whole series has been really uplifting. I started watching Clannad late, to the point where I started just as the first season ended. I marathoned it within a week and it was probably the best thing I had watched up to that point. I went through a rush of emotions, be it happiness or rage or empathy for all of the cast’s troubles. I fit Air in while I was waiting for Afterstory, and while I liked Air, it didn’t seem to compare to all that I had felt watching Clannad.

When Afterstory came along, I was happy to enjoy for what it was — a continuation of School Life. It was lighthearted and made me laugh. Each successive arc, even though it may not have had any actual significance to the main story, really made the characters for me. That was important to me. While the story was great, though sometimes heavy handed, what really pulled me in was how much I could empathize with the characters.

Clannad Afterstory brought me extremely close to tears at plenty of points. I shed some at Nagisa’s death out of how much I felt sorry for Tomoya, to lose his wife for this great sacrifice. I shed some at the field of flowers, when Tomoya finally became a dad. I shed some in the contrasting snow, when Tomoya’s fatherhood took an abrupt and tragic end. Then I shed even more in the final episode, where all the troubles and emotions I went through culminated in the best ending the series could have.

    Clannad is great.

So are all clannad related animes finished?

  3. on 05 Apr 2009 at 11:25 pmGar

@CherryNova: I would imagine so, unless they decide to make Tomoyo After…but they already gave her an OVA, so who knows?

@Jay: I agree completely about Kanon being better than Clannad. I really liked Clannad, but I don’t think it can really compete with Kanon when it comes to sad moments….

It was 100X better than AIR’s recap episode. I hope I didn’t spoil anything for you.

@ Some Guy: I suppose, but I was really hoping to see more of the pre-tragedy stuff. While I was clamoring for tragedy when harem/comedy was prevalent, the massive overdose of drama at the end left me longing for the upbeat times of old.

@ CherryNova: Yep, unless they do a Tomoyo After o_o

@ Roy Mustang: More like recap half series, amirite? I still loved AIR though, end made me BAAAAW.

Aye. School Life Clannad was pretty great…

Air, though, didn’t do too much for me. Only around the end did it get interesting at all…Kanna arc was okay, though.

A Fuko/Ushio loli harem ending is fine too.

Anyway, concerning the Kanon vs. Clannad thing.

The comedy of Clannad destroyed the comedy of Kanon. And the drama of After Story destroyed the drama of Kanon. It’s like comparing Special Jam-u with Super Hyper Rainbow Pan with Special Jam-u. There is no comparision.
