BAAAAAAAAAAAW

Haha, sorry, couldn’t resist taking a shot at the Sheryl camp after the torrential shitstorm of “LOLOL, Sheryl end confirmed, take that Rankafags” last week. I swear I don’t harbor any ill feelings towards Sheryl, I just happen to like Ranka better, that’s all. This episode by no means cements a Ranka end, no more than last episode cemented a Sheryl end, Macross F is slated for a minimum 26 episodes, we’ve still got a long way to go in the race for Alto-hime’s heart folks.

The episode starts off with a brief overview of the situation on Gallia-4, the planet is in a state of unrest, a Zentradi civil war of sorts is looming on the horizon, with the 33rd Marine Fleet acting as the primary instigators. Not exactly the best time for a Sheryl benefit concert, but plans proceed nonetheless, with Alto in tow for the opportunity to fly in a real sky.

Back on Frontier, Nanase rants about being ronery in the absence of Sheryl, Alto and Ranka, relegating Luca and Mikhail to little more than background scenery. However, Nanase’s wallowing is put to a speedy end when Ranka, in the flesh, surprises everyone by showing up to school having been given a day off to relax before her upcoming live.

Meanwhile, on Gallia-4, Sheryl and Alto land to a warm welcome from the local Zentradi, accompanied by ominous snickering from the 33rd Marine Fleet. As Sheryl emerges to the roar of the crowd, the fever she’s been nursing since last episode comes back in force and knocks her off her feet. The 33rd Marine Fleet blow her sickness out of proportion, accusing them of thinking themselves too good to perform for them and the civil war that has been on the brink of starting finally erupts. Sheryl’s crew along with Alto are captured and held hostage as the fighting begins.

News of the conflict reaches Frontier with a two hour fold dislocation delay, and some quick number crunching later reveals the earliest SMS forces could arrive to back up Alto is 7 days. Luca and Mikhail are brought up to speed on the situation, sharing the news with Ranka who pleads with them to think of something, some way to help Alto. Luckily, Luca is a child of the fold technology development firm known as LAI, and has a new toy to test out, a fold engine that isn’t affected by fold dislocation, which would allow them to zoom to Alto’s rescue without delay.

Back on Gallia-4, Sheryl offers no excuse to Alto for not taking care of her body and apologizes for not being able to give him the sky, as she promised. Alto leaves her in Grace’s care and sneaks out to see if he can’t do something about the situation at hand. The captain of the 33rd Marine Fleet rallies up his troops for war, promising to restore glory to the Zentradi, which he believes the micrones have stolen away from them, with the help of some stolen ‘reactive missiles’.

Alto tries to take off in his valkyrie, but is caught before he can make it off the ground, the local Zentradi try helping him, but can’t offer enough cover fire to do so. Just as they’re contemplating firing the huge mothership gun, reinforcements arrive, a lone SMS ship on the horizon, packing an interesting weapon, a set of gigantic speakers. Mikhail pops open the cockpit and yells out to Alto that he’s brought him a birthday present, Ranka emerges from the passenger seat brandishing a microphone. The speakers are cranked to the max, Mikhail’s valkyrie offers a makeshift stage using some large projectors and Ranka’s first unofficial live commences. In absolute awe at the “Super Dimension Cinderella” Ranka-chan and are quick to trade in their weapons for starstruck gazes and fanboyish screams.

But there’s one person who isn’t affected by Ranka’s song, the captain of the 33rd Marine Fleet takes flight, not about to let Ranka interfere with his plans, only to be blocked by Alto before he can take her out. The two dogfight a bit before the 33rd Marine Fleet captain begins to badger Alto about how fighting is inherent in Zentradi blood. Alto, having heard the speech about acting being inherent in his blood and knowing full well what a load of bs it is, he gets fed up and pulls out all the stops on the Zentradi captain, putting a prog knife through his cockpit, sending him plummeting into the ocean below.

In the aftermath, Mikhails eggs on Alto to take Ranka home in time for her live, telling him to consider Ranka’s feelings, having come this far to see him, Mikhail ensures Alto that he’ll escort Sheryl home properly in his stead. Before heading home, Ranka and Alto go for a scenic flight in the skies of Gallia-4, laughing it up, both of them blushing like a couple of lovestruck teenagers. However, their fun is cut short when a mysterious force, which we can only assume at this point to be of Vajra origin, knocks the power out of Alto’s valkyrie, forcing an emergency landing in the middle of nowhere. Although a seemingly unfortunate unfolding of events, the crash landing ends up leading them to quite a discovery, a macross class ship nestled in the forestry of Gallia-4.

Thoughts

First things first, lest I get virtually stoned to death by Sheryl fans, I must reiterate, I’m not hailing this episode as the definitive turning point to Ranka’s comeback, nor am I laughing at Sheryl’s misfortune. I am, however, satisfied that she got what she deserved. And by that I mean that Ranka finally regained some ground after a full season of Sheryl’s relentless plays for Alto’s heart. If there was any exchange so far that Ranka deserved to one up Sheryl on, it was this one, between Ranka and Sheryl, Ranka was the first to ask Alto out on his birthday, not only that, but Sheryl urged her on, only to snatch him away at the last second.

It’s likely the only reason Alto chose Sheryl’s invitation over Ranka’s is the promise of being able to fly in an open, limitless sky. By no means does that extend to the thought that Alto values piloting over Sheryl, it just so happens that it was the trump card that pushed Sheryl’s offer over top Ranka’s in terms of appeal for Alto. Whether Sheryl knew full well that her invitation was unfairly weighted to Alto’s desires and whether she remembered that by taking him along she’d be backhanding Ranka remains to be seen.

I like Sheryl, the character dynamic between her and Alto is amusing to watch, the only gripe I have with her is that she continues to be indecisive in her motives and actions towards Alto, and by extension, she is often unaware of how great an impact her actions have on the people around her. I wouldn’t call her outright selfish, but she certainly acts without consideration of consequence.

Major points scored on the Ranka front this episode. Her reputation is taking off, earning her the name of “Super Dimensional Cinderella”, and she hasn’t even officially performed yet! She’s shown that she can handle the pressures of stardom, even managing to set aside time for the arguably more important things in life, like her friends. And most importantly of all, she’s finally beginning to come to terms with her feelings for Alto, or at least that’s the aura she’s emitting as of late.

I’m curious as to exactly what she is to Alto anyways, from what we’ve seen thus far, Alto has always treated Ranka as a little sister of sorts, urging her to succeed and offering reassurance while not descending into drooling fanboyism, reminiscent of how he deals with Sheryl. This episode threw that into question with its last scene of Ranka and Alto flying together, both sporting unmistakable blushes. Given that Alto seems to have understood the meaning behind Mikhail’s speech to him, we can only assume that he’s known of Ranka’s true feelings this entire time, since he wasn’t overly agitated while flying with her, nor did he react too surprised when confronted by Mikhail. However, this contradicts everything we’ve seen between the two so far, interactions which haven’t really hinted at anything past a friendly, pseudo-sibling relationship. Even in the Macross Zero movie tribute episode, when hit with the realization that he’d have to kiss Ranka, Alto’s reaction was more of an “Shit! That’s like kissing my kid sister.” rather than the type of embarrassment felt when presented with the opportunity to smooch with a romantic interest.

Oh well, nevertheless, I look forward to seeing how Ranka’s feelings towards Alto, and vice versa, develop from here on in. Almost as much as I look forward to more of Ranka’s concert performances, I enjoy her voice much more than Sheryl’s, not to mention she has vastly superior fashion sense.

As for plot pushing, there wasn’t much to speak of. The Zentradi civil war thing isn’t at all central to the plot, from what we know anyways, and was rather poorly pieced together. It’s over and I still don’t know why the conflict erupted, aside from issues of pride, nor exactly who the party opposite the 33rd Marine Fleet was.

About the only plot development we saw this episode was all but explicit confirmation that Ranka’s pet thing is a Vajra. No one knows its genus/species and Luca’s search on the existing ecological database came up blank, labeling it as an unknown life form.

The final noteworthy piece of this episode was the fighting. I was largely disappointed with how it was portrayed, the weapons that the two sides were using emitted a characteristic “PEW PEW” firing sound that was hard to take seriously, and the damage that they did was seemingly negligible. With such a low level of urgency coming from the civil war, it was hard to take the situation seriously and the looming threat of ‘reactive missiles’ and the mothership’s main cannons didn’t help much either.

However, the dogfight between Alto and the 33rd Marine Fleet leader at the end was well done. The winding, strafing mid air combat was what I’ve come to expect from Macross F and the ending was great. I was just thinking how cool it would be if Alto stopped on a dime and gave the Zentradi captain a face full of bullets, and lo and behold, it happened, just as awesomely as I had thought it would be. As for the prog knife charge, it was a little over the top, but it worked. My only question is what happened to the Zentradi captain afterward, he gave the stereotypical “I won’t forget this!” cries at the end, but he fell into the ocean with a busted Queadlunn, shouldn’t he be…you know, dead?

Anyways, that does it for this week. Next week looks like it’ll focus on the Vajra inhabiting Gallia-4, the Macross discovered there, and if I’m not mistaken, it looks like Alto has another run in with Brera.

Dear God the QUALITY, it burns

Post Script: A question to you viewers out there. Sheryl’s hair: pink or blonde?

Most Sheryl fans are Ranka fans as well; how can we be otherwise, when Sheryl herself supports Ranka (did you forget how she stood up to Miss Macross for Ranka’s sake in episode ten?) They’re just tired of hearing conspiracy theories about how Sheryl “planned” to cut in front of Ranka’s birthday plans (especially when you remember that both girls actually cut in front of Alto’s father’s plans). But I’d imagine that you’d have a lot of lingering frustrations built up over the past 11 episodes as well. Just keep in mind that none of them were actually deliberate actions on Sheryl’s part, no matter how upsetting that may be. There’s no reason to blame Sheryl for Ranka’s past misfortunes any more than we can blame Ranka for Sheryl’s illness: both are just cases of how life doesn’t always work out for the best.

If anything, this episode proved that Sheryl was simply thinking of Alto’s needs when she chose the gift for him - it had nothing to do with one-upping Ranka. When they’re taken hostage, the first thing that she’s worried about is not her job (which is almost always priority #1) or her health, but fulfilling Alto’s dream. Honestly, it’s been ages since I’ve seen a character so utterly devoted to her love interest’s needs over her own. And to see her trapped in her room gazing out at the freedom of the outside world, when she’s normally bounding around, full of energy, was heartbreaking, to say the least.

Sheryl’s hair is officially strawberry blonde. Regions that are in the light come across as blonde, while regions that are shadowed come across as pink. Personally, however, I’d say that most of the lighting setups are designed so that Sheryl’s more emotional moments are in pink. Sheryl’s two kisses with Alto, the flight with Alto in the Ex-Gear, the scene where Sheryl gives Alto her earring, and her emotional exchange with Alto in this episode are all examples. There’s almost always a nearby sunset to be had in such moments, and it adds a softer touch to her normally fiery character.

“It’s over and I still don’t know why the conflict erupted, aside from issues of pride”
if i am not mistaken that marine was having a conversation with someone, we only heard his voice only on the communiations… so it sounds like this was orchestrated, but for what purpose i wonder…

    God, I hate this show.

You better blog Candy Boy 2 >:O

  5. on 28 Jun 2008 at 12:05 amKaelyn

    Sigh, my inner soul RAGES.
Assumptions and more assumptions, Shirukii D:

“The biggest question came to me as I finished the episode is if Sheryl intentionally kicks Ranka out of way. I believed it wasn’t but as director has done many times before, the whole situation is told form Ranka’s perspective so it’s much easier to just sympathize Ranka than to understand Sheryl.

To begin with, it’s mostly Sheryl’s fault. But it’s not that kind of fault Ranka fans have declared to be. Sheryl’s fault is not take care of her own health carefully. If we look back in middle of the show when Sheryl talks to Ranka, she immediately understands that Ranka wants to invite Alto to her first concert. However, before she can talk with Ranka little more, Sheryl collapses. As a result, Sheryl doesn’t know about Ranka wants to use this to buy some quality time under sunset with Alto. As we know, Sheryl is not kind of person to dig into details of most things. Her attitude towards Ranka is to encourage but not to provide physical help. So my conclusion is that Sheryl doesn’t know about Ranka’s plan, she neither takes much consideration of it, her brain may not function well due to fever, and her recklessness gets better of her as she sets a goal to give Alto the best birthday present.

As a sidenote, if Sheryl is aware Ranka’s plan, I’d call it negative character development but it’s because I think she is a much better person than Ranka is and putting her near to Ranka’s level is a negaitve character development. Here is my take of Ranka out of Ranka’s perspective. In fact, Ranka knows Sheryl has sth for Alto and Sheryl must want to be with Alto but she still wants to get Alto herself at Alto’s birthday night. Ranka only wants Alto without any others around. She fails so we feel sorry for her, but what if she succeed? Does she thinks of Sheryl? or other friends of Alto’s? What if there is a birthday party for Alto? From the message she delievers to Alto, I gathered that Ranka is still the Ranka, she only thinks of what she wants and not consider what her doings may affect others. So I don’t sympathize Ranka this time again. She has made a selfish plan and fail, she deserves this failure because she hasn’t planned it well. “

@ jacobian: I can see where you’re coming from, yes Sheryl is supportive in Ranka in many ways. However, you can’t expect me to believe that she didn’t know that inviting Alto out to Gallia-4 would screw Ranka over.

Sheryl invited him out on the eve of her concert knowing full well that he probably wouldn’t make it back in time to see her due to fold dislocations. I don’t blame her for wanting to drag Alto along, she just wants to spend time with the guy she likes, no problem there. But you have to concede that she did it knowing that it was at the expense of Ranka, alternatively that she’s so dense that she forgot about that.

    @ blissmo: Ranka fans, unite!

@ EvilDevil: So was this episode an isolated case of Zentradi warfare, or is this going to return as a recurring theme? I saw no evidence to suggest the latter.

    @ Michael: Uh…I’ll try o_o

@ Kaelyn: See, now you’re the one who’s being a little presumptuous.

As I said to jacobian, you have to concede one of two facts:

    1. She purposefully tore Alto away from being able to attend Ranka’s live.

    or

    2. She’s so dense or was so out of it from her fever, that it slipped her mind. The latter doesn’t really work since she was coherent enough to seduce him with her boobs last episode.

Also, how can you call Ranka selfish for wanting alone time with Alto. She likes the guy as more than a friend, I would think that wanting to spend time with him alone is a reasonable progression from there, Sheryl does the same.

Yes, Ranka knows that Sheryl has a thing for Alto, but the opposite holds true. You can’t berate one for trying to have it their way and not the other, that’s pretty hypocritical. I find no fault in Sheryl trying to nab Alto for herself, I’m just pointing out that she’s sending mixed messages to Ranka, who she sometimes supports and other times royally screws over.

    >>Sheryl’s hair: pink or blonde?
Does it really matter when it’s so very SHINY?

And I believe I may be one of the few people who don’t want anyone to lose. I like Ranka-chan’s moeness and Sheryl’s beauty equally ^_^. Damn neutrality!

Yay! for Ranka but poor Sheryl…

  8. on 28 Jun 2008 at 5:26 amCrusader

Hey there don’t celebrate just yet though Ranka has done much there are plenty of hints to her destiny being greater than we can possibly imagine. Ranka has made progress yes, but she needs to listen to Alto-hime at his point and to stop telling him things.

It was a gutsy coup de main for Ranka and one great concert.

    However it’s not over yet…

Wow, the power of MUSIC!!! —- UH… EXCUSE ME? LOL WHAT?
If a concert can stop a civil war from being shedding blood, this Earth would be a lot of more more more peaceful than what it is right now.

LOL i love how they used the first half of the series to promote Sheryl to the top and then demote her to the bottom. But i am not saying someone win or lose yet I just want to say what is happening right now.

I don’t really know how can one says Ranka or Sheryl are wrong. All they did was just to propose something to Alto and the one who chose it was Alto but how can you tell those girls are wrong?

And now we all discuss about Drama but where is my Mecha discussion?

@Michael: I would be a lot of happier if this was Candy Boy post LOL

P.S. “ef - a tale of melodies” has been announce. Nothing i can use to explain how happy I am.

  11. on 28 Jun 2008 at 9:25 amjacobian

The thing is, when Sheryl drops by to see Ranka, they don’t really discuss anything about its timing. Ranka said that she wanted to give Alto tickets for her concert for his birthday. The concert itself isn’t on his birthday, and the date of that event wasn’t discussed during their conversation.

Another problem was that Alto recieved Ranka’s plans at the very last minute, so there was no time to call back and confirm. Had Ranka called earlier when Nanase had originally asked her to, then she could have set a time and date to meet up with Alto. It doesn’ even have to be directly on the day itself; I’ve seen plenty of birthday celebrations take place as early as a week before or as late as a week after the actual day. All that matters is that you express how you feel.

Sheryl knew nothing about that last minute setup for Ranka’s plans, just as she didn’t know about Alto’s father’s plans. I’m pretty sure that she just gave him an offer and let him decide for himself whether he wants to go and how to set up the scheduling for all of his plans (it doesn’t make sense to not give Alto the option in the first place; that’s like denying him the right to decide). Had people have arranged things differently, I’m sure that he could have attended all three events.

The problem that the viewers face is that we’ve been consistantly seeing Ranka feeling down a lot for the past six episodes because of Sheryl’s progress with Alto. As you yourself said in episode eight:

“But I find it difficult to criticize Sheryl because I don’t even think she’s doing it on purpose. Her disregard for rules and situational hierarchy does make her come off as self centered, but she pulls it off with this weird naiveness that I find endearing, if not the slightest bit frustrating.”

That was after about a month after Sheryl started going strong with Alto. Now that we’ve hit the two month mark, it’s perfectly understandable why your patience would be stretched to its limits. But you have to remember that Sheryl is a very direct character (sometimes brutally so - Miss Macross is the perfect example) and convoluted schemes just aren’t her style. So as tempting as it may be to blame someone or the other for what happened to Ranka, we really can’t, in all fairness (except for Leon, of course).

Enjoy Ranka’s success for the positive elements that it brought about. At the end of the day, they’re both on the same team in the battle against the Vajra.

  12. on 28 Jun 2008 at 10:08 amKari

*huggles Sheryl* Cheer up and get back to your high-spirited self!

    *end fangirl mode*

Mya, Ranka annoyes me and I’m not entirely sure why. Anyways, I hope they have more plot unveilings soon as Macross is supposed to have both a plot and a love triangle. Where the latter is going, I hope it won’t become clear anytime soon, the shipper battles are funny to watch.

I DEMAND MORE INTERESTING PLOT! :D

  13. on 28 Jun 2008 at 11:18 amRoy Mustang

Ranka didn’t even bother to visit bedridden Sheryl after she collapsed from illness. What a b****. Ranka is a homewrecker.

  14. on 28 Jun 2008 at 11:30 amsanch_earl

“About the only plot development we saw this episode was all but explicit confirmation that Ranka’s pet thing is a Vajra.”

Since the first time I saw that creature, I’ve wondered if it could be the way that Leon and Co. were keeping track of Ranka. But if that’s the case, then why drag Sheryl’s undergarments all over the school? I also wondered if its just the Mac F version of a Guvava… until Luka couldn’t find any info about it. That’s definitely suspicious.

I’m still not convinced it’s a Vajra, though, since it is so vastly different from those bio-mechanoid insect like creatures.

    Anyone else have an idea?

Oh, and how ’bout that homage to Sound Force!!!!” (rolls his eyes)

  15. on 28 Jun 2008 at 11:41 amSiva

@Roy Mustang: LOL what do u think your first live concert means to you?

  16. on 28 Jun 2008 at 4:58 pmPyrrhusOnline

If the entirety of the civil war was orchestrated, then I believe it was to use Ranka’s singing to lure out whatever lies in the depths of Gallia-4. All we know is it awakened near the end of the episode, and it might have something to do with the downed Macross and the captain’s (forgive me for forgetting his name) disdain for the planet.

How does one do this? Lure Ranka to sing. How? Prevent Sheryl from singing (Possible sabotage cold virus go go!). Sheryl faints, causes Zentradi rebel leader (PEW PEW) to stage a revolt like he has always wanted. Revolt gets interrupted by LOLmiraclefoldmachine which allows Ranka to intervene with music prior to the use of the mother ship, and thus awakening the strange creature.

Final Conclusion: Brilliant orchestration or string of coincidences? Was it known Luca’s family had such a device ready and waiting? Was Ranka’s willingness to help Alto a factor in consideration? Was the rebel zentradi truly just trying to stimulate a revolt for his own personal gain? Did he know Alto was going for his fighter from an ‘outside source’ (cough cough Grace contacted the rebel cough)?

    Gah, I’m done thinking.

    GO GO RANKA!

  17. on 28 Jun 2008 at 6:48 pmItAintEazy

Forget Shery’s hair, where did Ranka get the fangs?

  18. on 28 Jun 2008 at 9:55 pmShirukii

@ Omisyth: Noooo! You can’t eat your cake and have it, you must pick a side! Come to the Ranka camp, we have cake! Delicious cake.

@ Crusader: Exactly, it’s far from over, not only the love triangle, but the plot in general has much further to go. That’s why I got so annoyed when people started hailing Sheryl as the victor last week, and those who are declaring a Ranka end based on this week’s episode. Statements like those can’t be made until the dying episodes.

@ Vadigor: Would you believe that I’m currently in the process of writing my Kure-nai tie up post? It’s a very slow process =(

@ Siva: Yea, if only the power of concert worked like that in real life.

Also, we discuss this because discussing the mecha hits a dead end really, really quickly.

@ jacobian: While I can concede that Sheryl might not have meant any malice towards Ranka by flying Alto away, there is no way she couldn’t have known that he’d miss her concert. She MUST have known the date of Ranka’s concert and MUST have known that taking Alto with her would mean that he would miss it (remember, Sheryl doesn’t know about LAI’s fold technology). She might not have known that Ranka was planning on inviting Alto personally that day, but she must have been aware that taking him to Gallia-4 would mean him missing the concert.

    @ Kari: Why do I always find myself at odds with you and Kaelyn ;_;

@ Roy Mustang: Alto and Sheryl aren’t dating yet, this is a competition for his heart, Ranka’s not going to sit back and do nothing about it. Granted, she should have visited Sheryl, but in the commotion of the war, I wonder if Alto even told her she was sick.

@ sanch_earl: If it’s not a Vajra, then it’s a negligible mascot character, which would be far less entertaining.

@ PyrrhusOnline: That’s too much of a stretch for me to believe, that someone could foresee the outcome of events to such precision. It would have to be Grace if anyone, but even she doesn’t strike me as awesome enough to pull it off.

@ ItAintEazy: She’s always had the fangs o_o

  19. on 28 Jun 2008 at 9:57 pmErilex

So, if Ranka is the “Super Dimensional Cinderella”, does that make Sheryl the “Super Dimensional Evil Stepmother”?

  20. on 28 Jun 2008 at 10:34 pmjacobian

Alright, then. For the sake of the argument, let’s assume that Sheryl knows absolutely everything about Ranka’s plans. What would you do if you were in her shoes?

Sheryl knows that it’s been a long time dream of Alto’s to fly in a natural sky. She knows that this is a rare opportunity for him to fulfill that dream. Should she tell Alto and let him decide what he wants to do with the idea? Or should she hold it back from him to ensure that he’ll definitely spend time with Ranka?

    Wasn’t this Alto’s birthday? :P

More importantly, didn’t Alto himself realize that accepting the invitation to go to Galia-4 would cause him to miss Ranka’s concert? Assuming that he’s an autonomous decision maker, of course. ;)

  21. on 29 Jun 2008 at 12:54 amKabitzin

I see this episode more as the first time Ranka even gets into the game, rather than the turning point. Alto is so uncaring about anything that doesn’t fly that it’s hard to say either girl is winning at this point.

I noticed the bad Zentradi was eating rainbow carrots… what a bastard! That babyVajra is going to end up conveying culture to the Vajra in some deus ex machina FOR SURE.

  22. on 29 Jun 2008 at 1:39 amPyrrhusOnline

@Shirukii: I don’t think it was THAT big of a stretch…I mean, according to Leon, everything was going “perfectly according to the scenario”. Also, Grace was the only one to have known of Alto’s escape when the Zentradi got a mysterious transmission.

    =x

Sorry offtopic but Shirukii, did you hear about Diablo 3 announcement? Gameplay videos are up on official site too.

  24. on 29 Jun 2008 at 7:09 amFenrir

If you guys noticed it, this episode have lots of referrences from the first Macross.

First, the Zentraedi Marine Commander (Ohgotwhai, the one with face plate) and his vice commander (the one with big brain), are look like Commander Vrlitwhai Kridanik and his vice commander Exedol Folmo in the first Macross. They are the first Zentraedi who tracked down SDF-1 Macross to earth and tried to destroy it. They also became the first Zentraedi who got in touch with proto culture and allied themselves with SDF-1 Macross/UN Spacy. Next is Tehmzin, the Zentraedi Marine rebel leader, the one who Alto fought, also looks like Quamzin, the Zentraedi rebel leader in the first Macross.

Second, the ending song of this episode which Ranka sang is “Ai Oboete Imasu Ka / Do You Remember Love”. It’s the song which Lin Min Mei sang in the final battle between SDF-1 Macross vs Boldoza’s fleet in the first Macross. It has become the main theme song of Macross.

Third, in the preview, the title for the next episode will be “Memory of Global”. Captain Bruno J. Global is the captain of SDF-1 Macross. In fact, the ruined Macross which Alto and Ranka found in Gallia4 is similliar with SDF-1 Macross on earth. Which means there’s a chance that the Macross in Gallia4 is as older as SDF-1 Macross. Or even better, it is SDF-1 Macross. Good God!

I wonder what are they trying to do with lots of referrences from the first Macross. I doubt this was just a tribute. I hope we can see more in the next episode. I really miss the old days, really.

  25. on 29 Jun 2008 at 7:22 amVadigor

@Shirukii, damn if that’s the case I’ll have to actually start watching the damn thing again. I only used to watch it when your post was up after all. ^^

  26. on 29 Jun 2008 at 8:47 amKari

Maybe one day the three of us will end up on the same side, Shirukii. :P

Alto not deciding on either girl would be most fun ending ever: “You both annoy me. I just want to fly.”
At least just to see shippers in full RAGE mode. :3 I do so love chaos…

Watching this show sometimes makes my brain hurt. It features the most BEAUTIFUL graphics I have ever seen in an anime, but all of that is almost rendered useless with one of the weakest “plotlines” of this season’s batch of animes, and even weaker characters. Not that I’m an avid Sheryl fan, but at least she offers just a little more dimension as a character than Ranka (not much though), so this recent development is just another disappointment on top of many disappointments this show has delivered. I don’t mean to incur the wrath of any Ranka fans, but honestly, I just can’t stand her at all. I mean, come on, we’ve seen this character so many times before already: the cutesy, innocent, doormat, girl-next-door with BIG DREAMS. BORING. Not that Sheryl’s breaking any molds, but I had hoped with an anime like this, which appears to be at least breaking grounds in terms of animation and design, that they would come up with more worthy female antagonists. I kept on HOPING for Ranka to offer more than what has been shown at face value, but nope. Nothing there except for bubblegum cuteness. Characters like Ranka just sets anime back into the dark ages.

At this point, I do agree with Kari, I’m PRAYING that Alto dumps both of them in the end and just flies off into space alone. Bleah!

And she’s not that cute. That’s the real deal breaker.

Well , i like Ranka she is a nice girl and she is cute as well. i think Alto love Ranka im not 100% sure but i think he does. Sheryl is a beautiful girl but i dont like her because of her behavior sometimes she makes Ranka jealous. in the end i think Alto will have difficult time maybe he`s not going to chose one of them but im sure that Alto will have a feeling for Ranka because he always protect her.
I hope this anime has a perfect ending. And no heart broken which means if Alto is going to be Ranka boyfriend im sure Sheryl heart will be broken. THank a lot for this Show i really love it.
