Gaaaay

Eh, can’t say I enjoyed this episode much, which is probably an extension of the fact that I hate Black Star. He’s been given the title of Naruto-lite and anything that’s associated with Naruto is fail by default. On that note, I’m surprised Kishimoto hasn’t just given up and renamed “Naruto” to “Sasuke”, or alternatively “The Uchiha Chronicles”, or better yet, he could just put us out of our misery and stop writing altogether.

Anyways, I digress, I can bash Sasuke at a later date, back to Soul Eater.

After meticulously checking his house infinity times over, Kid sets out to his first day at Shibusen…three hours late. Meanwhile, in class, everyone is groaning as they’re about to be subjected to yet another lesson based on dissection, this time of a rare and endangered bird. Out front, Soul and Black Star are skipping school, having heard the rumors that the Meister who beat Anubis has enrolled in Shibusen, who also happens to be Shinigami-sama’s son.

When Kid finally shows up and asks the two if they’re here to give him a guided tour, Soul scoffs at him, essentially calling him a spoiled brat through the use of some saying that employs the number 7, upon which Kid breaks down and begs him to use the more symmetrical number 8 instead. Not far off, Black Star is rambling atop Shibusen when he cracks off a piece of the structure, provoking the fight that he and Soul were waiting for in the first place.

Kid overpowers them at distance and in close quarters as the school slowly gravitates towards the window to watch the showdown. Dr Stein unfortunately has to put off his dissection of his rare specimen and bear witness to the fight, as required by school rules, taking along Maka and Tsubaki.

Outside, Maka uses her soul seeing abilities, noting that the syncing of Kid’s wavelengths with the Thompson sisters is remarkable, despite having to do it between the three of them. She also finds that Liz and Patty have a respect and admiration of Kid, which Dr Stein explains as being a result of him taking them off the street and their rough childhood.

The fight can barely even be called such, as Kid dominates the two of them with graceful ease, overpowering even Black Star in melee combat, his specialty. It doesn’t help that the souls of the two don’t match up with each other at all, leaving Black Star without a weapon.

However, by some fluke they do manage to pull off a decent combo attack on Kid, which finally makes him take the fight seriously, unleashing a Soul Resonance attack, taking the two out in one shot. However, in Soul and Black Stars combo attack, they manage to take a chunk off of Kid’s bangs, making him feel unbalanced, causing him to pass out, which is taken as a pseudo victory by the Black Star-Soul team.

Add in some random gay scenes, some gag jokes and a bit of character bonding at the end, and that’s about all that happened this episode.

Thoughts

Pretty lame episode, nothing much happening to further the plot, and not much in terms of pure entertainment value either. There was a fight scene, but the complete lack of urgency and the fact it was treated as a huge slapstick comedy routine didn’t make for an interesting match. I guess the only purpose of this episode was to drive home the fact that Kid is on a completely different level than everyone else at Shibusen, including Maka and Black Star.

It was neat seeing Kid show a glimpse of his true power though, using a Soul Resonance attack to finish things off, albeit that it was probably heavily toned down, the real one would have ripped his opponents into shreds. We also got to see Kid’s soul, which covers the entirety of his body, akin to Dr Stein, which means his strength, or at least the potential for it, is massive.

There was also a bit on the history of the Thompson sisters, who were raised on the streets, Liz looking like a badass biker chick and Patty looking like she’s about to tear your face off and wear it like a mask. A drastic contrast to what they’re like now…well, maybe not so much for Patty, she still seems like she could go batshit any minute.

Speaking of the whole weapons thing, I’m still curious as to what determines whether you become a weapon or a Meister. Are you born as such, or do you choose your respective paths upon enrolling into Shibusen? It doesn’t seem like there’s any social differences between weapons and Meisters, both are treated equally. Also, becoming a weapon doesn’t seem to stop you from living a normal life either, as we know from Deathscythe, who had Maka with Kami, his Meister at the time.

Finally, we also get to see Shinigami-sama’s soul, so large that it covers the entire of Shibusen. I’m curious as to what kind of final boss character could rival a soul like that, and also, if he’s that strong why doesn’t he just go around with Deathscythe and bring down everyone else himself? The answer to which is likely that he has some sort of curse or seal on him that prevents him from going outside of Shibusen, a common way to account for otherwise hax characters in series like this. (Ie. Evangeline being trapped at Mahora in Negima)

And so, with what I can only hope is the entire cast gathered, here’s praying that Soul Eater decides to give some direction to its plot sometime soon.

    I was so happy when Blackstar disappeared from the manga in the last 6-7 chapters but recently in ch 48 he came back I was all like T_T

    I kind of liked this episode, just because of the maka x soul part at the end. bonding ftw :]

    Can’t say I care about any of the characters in this series besides maka and soul. I hate blackstar with a passion, and death the kid is just wierd.

    Also, Thanks for pointing out that Shinigami-sama’s soul covers all of Shibusen, I must’ve missed that part, all I rember was that Maka coulden’t see his soul…

    Oh well, it looks like we’ll get to see Maka and Soul fighting in the next episode, so I can look forward to that ^_^
    (I still love the very first fight scene in episode 01)

    Shinigami is H4x indeed, good thing we also have another H4x character under our feet. =)

    Im just looking forward to the crazy zombie in the OP who uses Getsuga Tenshou.On a Naruto related note, the series’ fillers, no longer going at a snail’s pace, have started to get kinda good, in contrast to Bleach which has gotten progressively worse with each episode. -_-
    I never thought I’d like Naruto better than anything after FILLER HELL.
    And I do agree that Death’s Soul Resonance seemed really anti-cimatic; I thought it would be something akin to a hueg Final Flash.
    (I have got to stop comparing all these shounens to each other ;) )

    Anti-climatic? When did you learn that revealing something interesting like this is an anti-climatic in Shounen series?

    @Shirukii: Only six episodes so far had been presented and you already ask for the final boss? Even in Claymore manga after six years of running and now they just revealed there is more than just Yoma, AB and Claymore.

  8. on 17 May 2008 at 10:27 amRandor

    @Siva
    I just thought (probably unrealistically) that it would be something of earth shattering proportions; don’t get me wrong, it was really cool to see, but I guess my expectations were a little high.

    P.S

    Has Claymore really been going on for 6 years?! At this rate it’ll probably take another 6 to get close to the conclusion ;-;

    You obviously don’t know how to appreciate shounen…

    ….shounen AI! WHY ARE YOU WATCHING YAOI!!!!11

    GROSS. I’m leaving.

    @ RmX: Ah, ok, that works too. There had to be something pinning him down.

    @ Hinano: Is he as annoying in the manga as he is in the anime? Even if he’s voiceless.

    @ Redmist: I somehow doubt we’ll see the level of animation we did in the first episode for a while. Bones is probably saving budget for the fights they REALLY have to nail.

    @ blissmo: Yep, lame is a pretty accurate word to describe the episode.

    @ Nightingale: Ah, ok, that’s comforting, and well…completely expected.

    @ Randor: I can’t bring myself to watch Naruto anymore, I follow the manga because I’ve come so far with it that I can’t help but continue watching, train wreck syndrome.

    @ Siva: Good point, i heard about the twist in Claymore, lol. Engineering awakened beings to fight dragons, lawl.

    @ Totali: I swear I’m not gay ;_;

    Also, bah @ your blogging choices for the season haha, of them I only watch Nabari no Ou.

    Most likely.

    >> Yep, lame is a pretty accurate word to describe the episode.

    Even though they followed it point for point, it somehow seemed better in the manga.

    Definitely, actually, worse…… there’s a part where i was so irritated that i wanted to chuck my dictionary (a fine substitute for my laptop). Thankfully, we wont be seeing that part animated until next year.

    Well, as fellow Naruto hater I’II add my two cents. Honsetly, B*S doesn’t bother as much as he did in earlier chapters. He grew quite a bit on me during the Tsubaki Arc and than on, it’s probably because I don’t take him too seriously, and generally he has his moments. He’s like a parody of Naruto and standard shounen protag. He does really mean well to his friends and even went as far to get revenge for Maka during certain incident later on in the manga. He does have his reasons being who is as annoying as he may seem.

    It helps that unlike Naruto he has actual skill at fighting, so not really all talk, but unfortunately he lets it get to his head a lot.

    Meant to say “grew on me”.

    For some reason I really enjoyed this episode, but I reckon it could be partly due to how late it is now. -_-

    Anyway, several scenes in this episode cracked me up. The humour is on par with what I’ve come to expect from Soul Eater and I enjoy it for what it’s worth. And come on, you gotta love the “those who can’t see sould” tag… =p

    So the main arc will be kicking off next episode then? Should be interesting.

  16. on 19 May 2008 at 5:08 amW4

    Maybe I missed something, but Black Star struck me more as a Luffy-lite than a Naruto-lite (Compare “I’m gonna be the pirate king!” with “I’m going to be BIG!”). Show ▼

    However, this Black Star hatred I’m observing leaves an interesting question: if he were somehow eliminated or removed, whom do you think would make a good second partner for Tsubaki? (And no, “ME!” is not an acceptable answer. ¬_¬)

  17. on 20 May 2008 at 2:08 pmJoey

    @W4

    that is a very hard question :P

    Tsubaki would probably be a great partner for anyone, as she has a variety of forms and an understanding personality. We see a bit in the early episodes (and more later) weapons working with a variety of masters, so someone needs to freaking start leveling Tsubaki up!

    Black Star is not as annoying in the manga because he doesn’t have that lisping voice thing. Other than that, though, anime and manga B*S are pretty similar. However, he has proven himself to be an outstanding distraction device. When he isn’t talking about himself in third person (rare), B*S is pretty dependable and useful, too.

    The scene with Kid’s Death Cannon attack has not been toned down at all. So far, this anime follows the manga very closely (like 99.9% closely). To me, this anime is very good and I’m impressed that Square Enix follows this series so closely compared to other manga and anime series!!!

    As for Shinigami-sama, he seems to be far more knowledgable and more passive than other “major power” characters, as I call them. He also seems to have some knowledge of just what’s going on. As hinted (if you squint you can see it) in episode 1, 4 and 8.

    Shinigami sama has definitely fought against a person before, I’ve read some of the manga and know a few things about the series.
    Shinigami sama has created a school of shibusen to correct souls and technicians so they don’t become a Kishin (Excuse my grammar/spelling mistakes) but kishin is a demon god.
    Shinigami sama has the school for that reason and lets the technicians take care of his list.

    Mikey-sama, correction to your post. The school was built to keep the Kinshin in, not to keep others from turning into them, thats the weapon and technicians job. They are givin assignments to travel to different areas to fight off bad souls, sometimes to retrieve a dark weapon or something like that.
