Code Geass R2 06, SUZAKUUUUUUUU!
May 12th, 2008 by Shirukii

YOU SON OF A BITCH
It seems that every post I do on Code Geass R2 progresses something along the lines of “It was good, but…” followed by a vitriolic Suzaku rant. And this one will be no different, so for you Suzaku fans…yea, all three of you, fair warning has been given.

Stuck between the metaphorical rock and a hard place, Lulu gets bailed out of his phone conversation with Nunnally by Rolo, who uses his geass to freeze Suzaku while Lulu tells Nunnally to play along, pretending not to know each other. Suzaku takes it as a temporary sign that Lulu’s memories haven’t returned and apologizes to Nunnally for the misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, the preparations for Nunnally’s transportation to Area 11 and inauguration as its governor are underway. Some half wit politician is overseeing the operation and refuses to accept Guilford’s escort in fear of him stealing the glory, despite knowing full well what Zero is capable of.
Elsewhere, the Order of the Black Knights are preparing their interception mission, Kaguya leaves China to join Zero and the Black Knights clear out of the Chinese Embassy just as the Knights of Round show up to check on their status.
With that, the battle begins, the Black Knights taking an odd approach by engaging the aerial based fleet by dropping land based knightmare frames on the ships. The attack has two very difficult conditions to clear, firstly, Nunnally must be captured unharmed, and secondly, Lulu must tread carefully so as not to reveal his identity as Zero to her.

All is going well, until Guilford shows up with reinforcements, a squad of mass production Lancelot units backed up by Anya, Gino and Suzaku, rightfully guessing that the convoy would be attacked in transit. The Black Knight’s ground units, even under the command of Toudou, are picked off with relative ease. To make things worse, a sudden time limit is imposed when the half wit politician blows a hole in his own flotation engine, sending the ship into a slow crash course descent.
The only one able to put up a fight against the mass production lancelot units and the Knights of Round is Kallen, but even she gets shot down when Suzaku enters the fight. However, thanks to the brilliance of Lakshata, Gurren is upgraded with aerial gliders and an upgraded armor piercing hadron cannon. Making quick work of things, she takes down Guilford’s squad of lancelots and immobilizes Gino and Anya, who find themselves rather impressed at the Black Knight pilot whose skills rival those of the Rounds. Even Suzaku is bewildered when Lancelot, with its upgraded Yggdrasil drive, is unable to overpower Kallen’s Gurren.
While all this commotion is going on outside, Lulu sneaks onto the ship and tries to reason with Nunnally, telling her that she is simply being used by Britannia, nothing more than a political tool. However, Nunnally doesn’t think so, in fact, she reveals that she volunteered for this position and intends to carry on the will of her sister Euphie in establishing the Special Administrative Region of Japan, leaving Lulu speechless when she extends her hand asking for his support.
However, their conversation is cut short when the ship’s descent approaches sea level and by extension, the fight between Kallen and Suzaku reaching its time limit, both breaking off in lieu of their rescue mission. And so Lulu is forced to watch as Nunnally cries out for Suzaku’s help and the subsequent scene of his beloved sister being carried to safety by his traitorous “friend” while awaiting rescue from Kallen.
Thoughts
The reason behind my relentless hate of Suzaku is beginning to shift somewhat. Before, I ragged on him for being a hypocritical moralfag, who thought he could bring change to the Britannian empire from within, went on and on about justice and honor, only to completely abandon those principles and become a ruthless power hungry bastard. But as time passed, I came not so much to accept that side of him, but became so used to it that I wasn’t really fazed by it.
But now my hate is fueled by a completely different reason, he seems to be personally screwing Lulu over every chance he gets. We saw a glimpse of this last season when he was constantly showing up in Lancelot, ruining his battle plans, but this time it’s a lot more personal, going to great lengths to mindfuck him by bringing Nunnally in, and snatching her away as a knight in shining armor right before his eyes. I miss “JUST AS PLANNED!” Lulu, instead we’ve seen his plans fall apart at the hands of Suzaku these past two episodes. As if going against an entire empire wasn’t bad enough, he has to deal with his treacherous ex-best friend constantly wrecking his shit.

Anyways, moving on. Not much plot revelation in this episode, only this one extremely WTF moment when VV calls Emperor Charles his brother. Taking this literally, that means that the Britannian royal family is part witch. I sincerely hope that’s not the case though, since huge revelations like this should be alluded to before being dropped into the viewer’s lap, anything otherwise suggests that they’re just making stuff up as they go along. Not to mention the huge shift that it would cause to the story, having to explain such a twist would throw the supernatural element of Code Geass center stage, leaving it to clumsily dance around while the entire political and warfare structure takes a supporting role, leaving long time viewers scared and confused, dislodged from their comfortable familiarity of pseudo mecha.

Speaking of pseudo mecha, even that is beginning to endanger itself. The rapid evolution of Knightmare technology is showing Gundam-esque improvements of late. In this scene the Black Knight’s prog knife thing hits Anya’s torso square on, and it doesn’t even flinch, not even a paint scratch! While I don’t mind Knightmares running around toting hadron cannons and super speed, they shouldn’t be completely impervious to damage. Because at that point it ceases to be about battle tactics and strategy and becomes a battle of technology and piloting, leaving everyone else as mere cannon fodder. I fear the worst though, given that Kallen’s Gurren just got a hefty upgrade, and I’m guessing Suzaku’s Lancelot will follow suit not too far from now.

I do love Anya though, with her fat Knightmare with the appearance and weaponry to rival Virtue Gundam. But more than that, I love her deadpan attitude and calm demeanor regardless of the situation. Loli stature doesn’t hurt either.

Speaking of lolis, FUCK YEAH KAGUYA! Although…it looks like she’s matured a bit in this past year. But she’ll always be Kaguya-sama, queen of lolis to me.

And finally, probably my last rant on Rolo’s geass. (You didn’t really think you were getting away without one more of these, did you?) So despite my thinking that it couldn’t have possibly been this simple, the weakness behind Rolo’s geass is indeed a time limit. Fairly short too, looks like it was around 10 seconds. I’m not going to bother bringing up the inconsistencies that I pointed out in past entries all over again, at this point (barring an explanation in the anime) I’m just going to overlook them as Sunrise having screwed up their continuity.

And we close with Lloyd, because Lloyd is moeeee <3

Best character Lloyd.
Also,
>>he has to deal with his treacherous ex-best friend constantly wrecking his shit.
Suzaku == John Locke?!!!!?!?!?!!???!?!!!
>> All is going well, until Guilford shows up with reinforcements, a squad of mass production Lancelot units…
Actually a Vincent and 3 Glousters all equipped with float units.
>> Because at that point it ceases to be about battle tactics and strategy and becomes a battle of technology and piloting, leaving everyone else as mere cannon fodder.
Well hopefully the second generation Gekka line will balance things out on the BK side, and we can return to strategy and tactics a little bit.
>> I fear the worst though, given that Kallen’s Gurren just got a hefty upgrade, and I’m guessing Suzaku’s Lancelot will follow suit not too far from now.
The Conquista configuration isn’t overpowered enough? Oh boy.
And your evolution of Suzaku hate mirrors my own. Cheers mate.
Deus Ex Machina save FTW! Actually, I think it would have been even better if Lulu was forced to lie to his own sister in front of Suzaku. The fanboy hatred against that scumbag would have gone from merely Vesuvian to “Death of a Thousand Suns.” Plus that scene at the end would have had more of an emotional impact.
In a slightly unrelated note, lol @ Adult Swim for overcensoring the R1 Kallen shower scene. You can show all the (offscreen) murders in cold blood you want, but gawd forbid if there’s a nip slip.
“Speaking of lolis, FUCK YEAH KAGUYA! Although…it looks like she’s matured a bit in this past year. But she’ll always be Kaguya-sama, queen of lolis to me.”
Kaguya-sama in a mini-skirt was hard to survive mentally. I nearly melted, she’s too damn adorable.
“I’m not going to bother bringing up the inconsistencies that I pointed out in past entries all over again, at this point (barring an explanation in the anime) I’m just going to overlook them as Sunrise having screwed up their continuity.”
I’m glad you also realize that you wouldn’t have much fun with this show if you scrutinize every detail in essays. A lot of people try to take this show with a way too serious business look on things. I say to those people, just sit back and enjoy, this shit is just entertaining.
I’m not following “Code Geass,” but I’ve detected quite a bit of Suzaku-induced rage over the internet.
Can someone describe Suzaku’s unlikeability in terms that I can understand? Specifically… is Suzaku better or worse than Makoto Itou?
Both are fuckers, but in different sense of the word.
Moe Loyd? Awesome =p
And I knew you’d spout more HAET for Suzaku when I was watching this. Keep in mind that the moralfag doesn’t actually know he’s screwing over his former best friend though. (not that that makes me hate him less)
The brother thing wasn’t as much of a surprise for me, since it already got spoiled to me by the translators as I was hanging around in #gg… xD
Holy shit I’m back! O.O
@W4 No I don’t think Suzaku is worse than Makoto Ito simply because he doesn’t satisfy his own wants. Personally, I don’t think Suzaku has had any ill intentions, but seeing as how Lacus Cly- ahem, Euphemia was killed, he might have a personal motive to hurt Lulu now.
Speaking of which, should we call this the Gundam episode from now on? I mean sure there’s been a bunch of things from last season that’s been pretty subtle (Masks, the Ace of Black Knights having a red mech, Aile Stri- ahem, Flight Pack Lancelot), and now we see Guren getting a mid-show upgrade (if you would say that Code Geass is one show altogether and that this is technically episode 31) and using Bakunetsu God Finger 2-3 times…
Now that I think about it, Suzaku reminds me more of Shinn Asuka because it seems like after episode 23 of R1, it’s been “Mah gurlfriends DEAD, must kill ZERO!”
All that aside, it must be a big slap to the face for Nunally to cry out to Spinzaku as her saviour, especially considering that next episode implies he might throw away his Zero mask; we all know he won’t, however, and will methinks he might RESOLVE to carry on.
And what of Nunally? WILL SHE SUSPECT ZERO IS LULU? Probably, and she’ll probably ponder it next epi, but whatever.
Long week ahead
No love for Zino?
>>No love for Zino?
Whining is NEVER good.
Though I’m not exactly a supporter of Suzaku and I am in lament for missing another “Just as planned” moment, I have to admit it was kinda fun to see Lelouch get screwed over. I was thinking the whole time “Just grab her and run before Suzaku comes along! Hurry up, hurry up, hurry- Oh well look at that. You Lose. Serves you right.” I was also partially convinced to not completely HAET Suzaku by the looooong discussion on THAT a couple of days ago. I am now full of ambivalence towards him.
On a lighter note:
Having just watched the fourth Mnemosyne episode, there was a mention of Yggdrasil there too. Though there’s not much connection, with Geass ending with a failed rescue attempt and Mnemosyne ending with the main character getting atomized by a jet plane engine…O-O.
OK, not such a light note ;).
Sometimes Suzaku annoys me, but mostly he just amuses me. It is like watching Kira Yamato from the opposite side.
Too much time was wasted talking to Nunnally. He should have just hit her with a tranquilizer dart and escaped.
I too am saddened at the recent rapid powerups to the mecha. At least in R1 Lelouch was able to own the Lancelot by scouting the game tapes of Suzaku. Now it’s more like Lloyd and Laksharta are the only ones playing and everyone else is either a grunt or an observer.
Guren-Kashoushiki, gattai da! The fact that Kallen’s Knightmare Frame is called Guren, colored red, and her having a hot-blooded attitude makes it difficult not to reference Gurren Lagann here.
Stealing a disabled loli away from her imoutokon elder brother is really despicable of Suzaku. Fag needs to get himself killed with a fukken’ railcannon the size of Mexico.
“It stepped on me…”
This is an advice ROFL if you don’t trust me do it again you will see what happen :D
Anya definitely has that special appeal going on, and that’s not a bad thing at all. I’m looking forward to more of her soon.
A loli a day keeps the pedo at bay.
>>A loli a day keeps the pedo at bay.
Shirukii I don’t think I can troll your comments anymore, they’re doing critical damage to my ego.
@ lolikit: John Locke…as in the philosopher? Or the character on LOST?
Not as damaging as being called out on that LS deal by Sat-chan, that was harsh.
@ RmX: Thanks for the corrections on the models, I’ll admit that I’m very much winging it in that regard.
@ ItAintEazy: But at that point, Sunrise would be stormed by fanboys driven by undiluted rage, and my C4 truck.
lol indeed at the censoring thing though, that was ridiculous.
@ Calawain: Well, I went into CG with that mindset, as I knew it was hyped far past its worth, but it’s in my nature to be analytical about these things and try tearing continuity to shreds.
@ W4: Depends whether you find manwhoring worse than betrayal, I guess. The level of death wishing I throw unto each of them are comparable.
@ L: i c wut you did thar
@ Vadigor: If Suzaku doesn’t know it’s Lelouch acting as Zero by now, he’s stupid. Zero has stricken down every governor of Area 11 without hesitation, killing them as if it were nothing, yet this time he sets up an elaborate plan based upon not taking down the ship with Nunnally on it, but taking Nunnally herself, alive. There’s only one conclusion to be drawn from that.
@ RJ: I don’t think Nunnally has any reason to believe Zero is Lulu at this point. She didn’t seem to think so here, else she wouldn’t have given her speech under the assumption that Zero would kill her. Unless Suzaku (BIG slep in the face that was) plants that seed in her mind.
@ blissmo: Gino you mean? He’s alright. I give him points for being able to admit and admire Kallen’s skill.
@ Randor: Suzaku deserves nothing but pure unbridled hate, it’ll take some massive redemption for me to think anything otherwise. I see what you’re getting at when you fault Lulu for own downfall, but the difference when heroes are stricken with it and villains are, is that the latter is emotionally justified. This is just picking on the underdog.
Mnemosyne is all about Mimi sex now, it’s all I expect going into it, anything else is bonus.
@ Kabitzin: >> Now it’s more like Lloyd and Laksharta are the only ones playing
EXACTLY. Yes. That’s exactly it. And it sucks. I want my tacticians back D=
@ Hangmen: Seriously. Though that henshin scene was ridiculous. Dynamic calculation of interception points to the accuracy enabling such fine tuning to happen was mind blowing.
@ Siva: Haha, oh Anya, silly loli, she’s too awesome.
@ Espydon: Bonus trivia, Anya doesn’t wear pantsu.
@ Shirukii: Another reason why he’s so damn stupid? It seemed like he might have had somewhat of an insightful moment when Lelouch/Zero cried out when he appeared, but still.
Isn’t there some sort of “Kill off moralfag” poll going on in Japan or something? (there should be…)
>>> Zero has stricken down every governor of Area 11 without hesitation,
No, he intended to capture Cornelia alive; but that was just so he could make her talk then kill her second. And Suzaku doesn’t know he was trying to take Nunnally alive.
Besides, it’s well established that Suzaku can and will post-facto justify any decision he makes. So in his mind, he’s never wrong. He’s also not the only one who does this.
Regarding Anya… PICS OR GTFO
Adult Swim… I don’t remember the shower scene being that bad and only saw two noticeable blurs. Hey, they showed her ass clearly. Now there was a scene with Nina in ep.12 that I wonder if it will survive.
ps. I lolled at Gino saying, “That ‘Orange’ guy?”
Dunno if this has been guessed by anyone else yet but in regard to Rolo’s geass my theory is that the larger the area of effect, the shorter the duration.
You can see in this episode that he can control how big the area of effect is as he made a pretty small time bubble with it and it seemed to last longer than the other times he used it. If thats how it works than it could possibly be used with a very large area of effect but only last a second or two at a time.
Lelouch kinda annoyed me with his utter failure to rescue Nunnally.
I know he doesn’t want to force her into anything but he was in the room with her for over 6 minutes and he couldn’t figure out what to do, not very Lelouch like, although she is his biggest weakness so they get away with it.
He should have just done the basic “rescue now, explanations later” tactic thats usual used when you need to make a quick getaway.
Alright Shirukii. I’m not commenting here anymore.
P.S. character from Lost. He will wreck your shit.

you deserve to be shot for that
also i wonder how long till by they figure out to get the gawain with the freakin sub
I’m really surprised that Nunnally hasn’t figured out that her brother is Zero. A mask shouldn’t affect a blind person and Lacus… I mean, Euphie figure it out when she saw him. He doesn’t change his voice. Does he smell different?
