Kanokon, at a glance
April 6th, 2008 by Shirukii

Nyan nyan, nyan nyan, ni hao nyan
When I initially wrote this opening paragraph I filled it to the brim with praise for Kanokon, framing it as a lighthearted ecchi series with school comedy elements and the potential for an engaging plot by putting its fantasy undertones to use. But then, crap, I remembered that I already did that last season, and so, after lamenting the waste of a good 15 minutes of my life, my enthusiasm to do this post is even lower than before, if you can fathom such a low level of motivation.

So…Kanokon sucks. But I knew beforehand that it was going to suck, so at the very least, I’m not disappointed. While it’s not on equal footing with Rosario + Vampire in terms of the pure volume of panty/boob shots, Kanokon is pure fanservice with almost zero redeeming qualities to it.
Kanokon follows the day to day life of Oyamada Kouta, a high school freshman (and a shota), and Minamoto Chizuru, a cute girl who has found herself inexplicably in love with Kouta. Chizuru clings to Kouta day in and day out, to the point where their classmates just accept it as part of the everyday routine.
One day, Chizuru gives Kouta a letter telling him to meet her in the music room after school, where she wastes no time in sticking her tongue down his throat. However, in doing so, she unintentionally reveals a shocking secret, Chizuru is actually a fox spirit in disguise.
Though initially surprised, Kouta quickly accepts that fact and still likes Chizuru. With that, Chizuru proceeds to pin him down on the floor and initiate shota rape, but is cockblocked by her brother, who is also a fox spirit. He goes on about how fox spirits and humans can’t coexist, etc etc. To prove him wrong, Chizuru GATTAIs with Kouta by kissing him, explaining that a fox spirit can become one with a human if they are completely willing. Chizuru’s brother wants more proof of their bond, so Chizuru/Kouta make a gigantic fireball, larger fireball representing a deeper connection between fox/human, and blow a chunk off the school building.
Chizuru returns to her normal form and with her brother gone, resumes shota rape. The end.
lolikit sums up what to expect from the series here on in:
Introduce new girl. New girl falls in love with Kouta for no fuggin’ reason. Foxgirl tries to have sex with Kouta. New girl interferes.
Though, given what we’ve seen so far, FoxgirlXShota sex might actually happen. Of course it would be censored by convenient lens flare, as is the trend these days, which is more or less the animation studio’s way of telling us to BUY THE DVDs! Though, compared to making an entire series a commercial for your previous hit, that’s pretty tame.
Technicals are standard fare, music sucks and animation is passable. Character designs are ok though.
I might keep watching Kanokon to kill time, in the same vein of reasoning as to why I sat through Nagasarete Airantou, but shitsux. I do find some solace in the fact that it has Mamiko Noto voicing across Kawasumi Ayako, but I’m not big enough on seiyuu to be consoled by that fact alone.
If nothing else, I might be inspired to check out the Kanokon’s source material, as I did with Rosario + Vampire, which led me to a half decent manga, but only furthered my rage at the anime for leaving out badass Ghoul Tsukune.

I wanted to give Kanokon a consolation award of sorts for featuring the best lesbian vocal make out scene involving Mamiko Noto, but strangely enough, it isn’t.
EDIT* After being reminded that Kawasumi Ayako voiced Himemiya Chikane, I’m on the fence about that last point. On one hand, OH GOD SHANA IS HOT, but on the other, it’s Kannazuki no Miko!

Mmmmm, there is a reason, because he smells like the countryside (i.e. trees, animals, nature) since he lived there, they just didn’t spend much time on it in the anime. Not to say that it’s a good reason, but a reason exists =)
And oi, a Lucky Star hater?! Fie upon you sir!
Kawasumi Ayako > Mamiko Noto!
Lucky Star is dumb!
Keep the faith, Shirukii. Keep it strong. I’m with you for the long haul. Down with Lucky Star and Kanokon!!
Also, lol @ Calawain. Why’re you replying to my comment on Shirukii’s blog instead of on mine? Oh and by the way I called you “total shit” on my blog because of your support for this show.
>>I wanted to give Kanokon a consolation award of sorts for featuring the best lesbian vocal make out scene involving Mamiko Noto, but strangely enough, it isn’t.
The one in Mnemosyne has Rie Kugimiya (in other words, Louise of ZnT infamy—clear fail), whereas the one in Kanokon involves Kawasumi Ayako who’s like, HIMEMIYA CHIKANE.
Now I ask of you: which is better?
Damn straight.
EDIT: Totali beat me to it, kind of.
One of my acquaintances says that Kanokon opening makes him shocked!
Meh… IMO, the manga is more engaging. I wonder why the anime didn’t start at chapter 1 like the manga did.
I love the opening theme, though.
Well new season starts with bunch of unknown animes from me again :D.
I guest I will stick to Aria the natural > the origination this season :D
So…what the hell did I just watch? D:
So much boing making me dizzy…
And where is GE for that wind energy? Now that’s what I call green energy…powering up my eyes.
Man, along with Druaga, this show reminds me of a all-girl fighting game coming in on April 08 to the USA called Arcana Heart. Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghQoTVtsVUI
Especially the first screencap since there is someone who somewhat resembles her in the game…along with a loli who has a move that summons a treasure chest with a female zombie doll inside o_O
Off to watch Geass
I’m more concerned that furry is becoming the new moe.
Ya, it kind of sucks but, it feeds my Foxgirl fetish so I’m going to watch it anyways.
>>> I wonder why the anime didn’t start at chapter 1 like the manga did.
Time compression. They want to introduce all the antagonists quickly, so they cram most of the first volume into a flashback. It doesn’t bode well that they chopped-off most of the significant plot points in the process: why Chizuru likes Kouta (way he smells, as mentioned), that Chizuru is 300 years old, and that Kouta isn’t able to control the foxfire.
I wouldn’t say that the manga is “good”, but it’s a lot easier to accept the gratuitous fanservice. For starters, Kouta isn’t such a useless wimp as they show in the anime. But I need to track down the original novel.
>>> Of course it would be censored by convenient lens flare,
I think there was already censorship in this ep. After the OP, there was a 10-second still frame. I’m guessing it was done to make-up the time lost from cutting out explicit porn.
Ah, I watched this episode only cos the pictures are really pretty
@ Calawain: Ah. That makes sense…I suppose. Wish they had hinted at it more though.
As for LS, it’s so easy to hate, I just can’t help it =D
@ Totali: I’d put Mamiko Noto, Kugimiya Rie, and Kawasumi Ayako all on the same plane of awesome.
@ lolikit: ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWA.
Thanks for reminding me about that, though Kugimiya still has my love for Shana.
@ barosl: Because of how bad it was? Or…?
@ W4: Seems like it’s time to check out the manga then.
@ PCGamer: Can’t go wrong with ARIA, enjoy the awesome.
@ Greggo: Foxes, making out and possessing people.
@ Servbot: Interesting trailer, I like the combo system, but fear that the complexity will lead to people eventually finding infinites, and it’s just no fun from there.
@ ItAintEazy: I thought that was already established with Horo last season.
@ Trunkmonkey: Case and point. I never had a 10% fetish before either D=
@ Telliamed: Ugh, they dumbed down Kouta? That sucks, this really is starting to remind me of R+V.
@ blissmo: So…you’re in it for the fanservice then? lol
>>Kugimiya still has my love for Shana. (emphasis mine)
You’re not very bright are you :(
I think I’ll stick with Horo with her being one sexy fox goddess. ;) Not only she looks cute, she is one smart cookie.
@ Dando008
….. uhhhh, Horo is a wolf……
Regardless of everything else that happened in this episode, I loved the kiss scene. That was hot.
Ah..yea…I stand corrected by some random person. My mistake.
Aww c’mon, Shirukii, get ur foxgirl *pon pon* fetishism out for a while… You know, it actually helps me to fill the void left by Spice boy and Wolf girl last season :D
nice,but i’d like a video
YEAH!! Kanakon rlz!! xD
Chizuru is sooo sweet and Kouta should be more openen On love from foxghost ^^
if they bother you to watch them ,then dont watch it anymore……..
& dont say “suck” bec u probably suck at all!!
fucking lame shitt………..
whomever is the author post this kind of shitty explanation abt what his/her felt in the anime story….and gives a thumbdown abt it… well I say Ur a “duMbass” .Even if u can make a piece of a manga and make a story…..then u cant…..
