True Tears 13 [END]

…DAMNIT!

And so True Tears comes to an end, a bit of a weak end at that, but all things considered, not a bad one. Obviously, spoilers after the jump.

Episode Rating: 8/10 || Series Rating: 9.5/10

Noe ends up in the hospital after her leap from the tree at school, but luckily she has only suffered a fractured leg. Shin and Jun talk on the roof of the hospital, Shin apologizing profusely for not being able to stop Noe in time and Jun reflecting on the beauty of snow, both aesthetically and in its ability to break falls from high places. He asks Shin if he knows why Noe can’t cry, Shin guesses self-suggestion, Jun asks him to leave as he can’t forgive him for letting harm come to Noe.

Jun heads back inside to talk to Noe, who apologizes for once again making him worry, it’s just that after she saw Shin dance at the Mugiha festival, her desire and belief in herself to fly overrode common sense. She continues and apologizes for hurting Jun all this time, Jun assures her it’s not her fault, she didn’t know how he felt, but that doesn’t make it any better, ignorance isn’t an excuse, Noe says that she wouldn’t have hurt him if she had known.

The next day, Jun and Hiromi meet in town and have a small talk. Jun’s small talk is deflected quickly by Hiromi and he gets to the point, he confesses that he never loved her, not even the slightest bit.

At school, Shin is the center of attention due to his performance in the Mugiha festival, girls and guys alike complimenting him on how cool he was. Through the crowd, Hiromi pushes through and tells Shin to visit her apartment that afternoon. There, Hiromi serves cake and coffee, after taking a sip Shin notices there’s only one of cup of coffee for the two of them, Hiromi grabs the cup which is still in Shin’s hands and drinks from it. Shin notes that Hiromi is acting a little weird, which snaps her out of it, she apologizes for acting this way and asks Shin to leave for the time being.

At home, Shin gets a call from the publishing company that previously rejected a script of his, asking him to submit it again. Shin asks his father when people cry, to which he responds, when the heart wavers. As he thinks about his response, Hiromi shows up, she apologizes for acting weird earlier, despite Shin saying that’s not the case at all. She goes on to say that she sometimes hates the way she acts, all because she’s always loved Shin and didn’t want to give up but at the same time didn’t want to impose. She tells him to face up to everything and settle things properly, both with her and Noe, after that, no matter what decision he comes to, she’ll accept it.

Shin tells Hiromi that he’ll visit her in the afternoon and heads to the hospital, picture book in hand. But when he gets there he’s faced with a stubbornly acting Noe, who refuses to read the ending to the book, claiming that she had nothing to do with it, that Shin could have written it even without her. He tells her that he wrote it for her and if she doesn’t want to read it, he’ll throw it out, Noe tells him to go ahead. But before he leaves, she asks him where he plans on tossing it, Shin replies that he’ll throw it away where Jibeta decided not to fly, surprising Noe since she didn’t know he was watching at that time.

Shin sits on the bank making paper airplanes out of his picture book and tossing them onto the surrounding beach. Suddenly he sees Noe in the distance, struggling not only to walk, but attempting to pick up the scattered pieces of Shin’s book at the same time. The two gather up the pages and head to a nearby bus stop so Noe can read it all. The last page of the book is missing, but Noe says that it’s fine, she can use her own imagination to figure out what happens after Raigomaru becomes able to fly.

Shin tells Noe clearly, that he’s in love with Hiromi, Noe nods, saying that she knew all along. But it’s not that simple, although he loves Noe, Shin’s heart wavers whenever he looks at Noe, the one who made it possible for him to write, the one who made it possible for him to dance. The two part, Noe asking Shin to believe in her ability to fly, walks back to the hospital alone as the two both sing Noe’s cockroach song, Shin breaking down into tears as Noe walks away.

While all this is happening, Hiromi is waiting at home and is visited by Shin’s mom who brings over some food she made. The two talk, Kanae sympathizing with Hiromi over the pain of waiting…

After Shin finishes things with Noe, he heads to Hiromi’s house only to find her not there. He tracks her down to the bamboo forest, the same one where the two were reunited as kids during the festival. Shin asks Hiromi to go out with him, and despite Hiromi’s half hearted rejections, presses on, telling her that it’s fine for her to be selfish, it’s fine for her to ask him to look only at her, because he’ll be beside her forever. He’s always wanted to be able to wipe away Hiromi’s tears, and now he can, the two hug.

TIME SKIP LOLOL

It’s now spring and the drama of winter has come and gone. Noe has managed to shake off her unapproachable weirdo image and is getting along with everyone rather well. Hiromi continues to kick ass at basketball and Shin continues to doodle in class instead of learning all important precalc. Having come to terms with his feelings, Jun takes up the offer from the printing company that he had previously rejected and is Tokyo bound. Shin’s father, realizing that his son will amount to nothing more than a picture book artist, concentrates his efforts on passing down the sake brewery to that random helper boy we’ve seen all season. And finally, Aiko and Nobuse continue to grow together at their own pace, essentially repeating their entire relationship, this time on their own accord.

Noe heads to the chicken coop after a day of school. Now that the snow has melted, she can see the remnants of the rocks that Shin used to spell out his confession to her. Looking up to the sky, the wind blows by and releases a single glittering tear that sparkles in the sky.

Thoughts and Final Impressions

So, before the Hiromi fans bite my face off, the reason I thought this ending was weak was not because Hiromi won, but rather the construction and pacing of the episode itself.

It was going really well until the bus stop scene where Shin tells Noe that he’s in love with Hiromi. Noe’s reaction and the subsequent events were a far cry from what I expected after all that build up. It was like being hit by a dud bomb, it whizzes towards you and you brace for impact, only for it to crash land by your feet and not explode.

It was at that point that Noe should have cried, not in the dying seconds of the episode, succumbing to nostalgia. Shin’s decision was a painful one for him to make, he had always loved Hiromi, yet Noe barged into his life and he fell for her as well, but he had to let one of them go, it wasn’t an easy decision and his tears and cries of pain when he and Noe parted were indicative of that. Yet Noe did not reach the same emotional catharsis. Why? What was the point of deferring it?

The time skip epilogue was also pretty lame. It served it’s purpose in tying up the loose ends, but detracted from the finale’s overall impact. I’ve never liked series ending like this, Gurren Lagann fell to the same fate, unless the central to theme to the series is a sort of “Life goes on” message, the whole “__ months/years later…” things has never worked well in my opinion. Adding to that, the transition was too calm. Contrast to the insert song exploding onto the musical foreground back in episode 10, Shin’s confession scene was a comparatively silent affair, and with a good five minutes left at that point, it lacked the sense of finality that would have allowed for the fade into spring.

Anyways, on to characters, who have been the highlight of True Tears all along.

Noe remains my favourite and yes, I am very angry that she lost. However, hindsight is 20/20 and it makes a lot of sense that she did. From the beginning, Noe has been very naive and clueless in terms of relationships, whether she was trying to sort out her feelings for Shin, Shin’s feelings for Hiromi, or her relationship with Jun, she was continually met with failure. She said it many times throughout the series, she did not understand them, and towards the end she realized how painful it was not to be able to do so.

The entire ordeal with Shin was a learning experience for Noe. Very few people get love right on their first tries, it takes the experience of heartbreak and coming to understand and trust in the feelings of those you love. This was all cumulated into Noe’s eventual realization and accepting of Hiromi being the one in Shin’s heart. The fact that it wasn’t last episode when she admitted it or when Shin finally came out and said it when she cried, pisses me off even more. Noe finally “understanding” everything was the result of her character growth over the entire series and it was clearly a painful realization. Why it wasn’t until spring when she was looking back at it all until she finally shed a tear is beyond me.

My opinion of Hiromi is still largely two fold. Yes, I still -HATE- her cryptic nature and hypocrisy. Despite ignoring Shin for the better part of the series, pushing him away without explanation and confusing the hell out of him, when the two sorted things out she became ultra possessive of him, telling Noe to back off and such. Furthermore, despite saying otherwise, it’s pretty clear she harbored some animosity for Jun, which is cool and all, he toyed with her mind and pretended to like her…oh wait, that sounds familiar. Kinda like when Hiromi mind fucked Shin by showing interest in him, only to turn around and confess that she liked Jun.

On the other hand, I found it admirable of her to admit her own faults. She told Shin that she was a selfish person and that she hated herself for it. It was at that moment, that conversation in the hallway, that I accepted the Hiromi end. There’s nothing wrong with being selfish when it comes to love, in the end it’s to fulfill your own happiness, so long as you don’t delude yourself in the process. This is why I found the Mao-Kouichi ending to Kimikiss fitting, and the same applies here.

Also, as trivial as it might seem, the random scenes of Hiromi messing around at home went a long way, I found her to be incredibly cute in those instances. Though, doesn’t change the fact her character design is the least inspired of the three female leads.

And finally Aiko. I’m still not impressed with her decision to go back on everything she did to break things off with Nobuse. However, these past few episodes have shown that she isn’t simply settling for second best, the two of them really did start over and take things at their own pace, and if that’s where she finds happiness, then who am I to say it’s wrong of her.

All in all, True Tears was a great ride. Definitely my favourite series of the winter season, no other show had me writhing in anticipation for the next episode to come. It ended with a whimper rather than the anticipated bang, but despite the delivery being weak, it was a fitting conclusion.

I’m saddened that Noe didn’t win out over Hiromi in the end, but such was the “obvious” outcome all along. I repeatedly resigned myself to a Hiromi ending over the course of blogging True Tears over the past 13 weeks, it was only when PAWorks began to dangle the possibility of a Noe End that I began to waver. Only for them to hit us with a “lol, no” at the very end. Bastards.

I make no hesitation in recommending True Tears to anyone, if for some reason they hadn’t been following it all along.

The story is great, simplistic in nature, boiling down to little more than a love triangle at its core, however with several twists and turns and a bunch of chicken related metaphors along the way, it made for an awesome plot.

It goes without saying that characters were awesome in True Tears. Whether it be the cute and energetic Noe, the conflicted fanservice character Hiromi or the longshot Aiko, viewers split off into their respective fanbases backing their preferred heroines while watching them grow along the way.

And finally, animation and music, which didn’t really get much coverage from me seeing as I tend to focus less on the technicalities of a show, rather its content. But that by no means make them an insignificant point, being PAWorks’ first solo project, I’m amazed that they pulled it off so well. The panned out 3D walking scenes were a little off now and then, but generally, animation and character designs maintained a high standard all throughout. Music was also very effectively used, both bgm and OP/ED served their purposes well, my only complaint lies in the finale, where musical support was notably lacking.

It was fun blogging True Tears, thanks to everyone who read and commented, the discussions that arose from some of the twists were…interesting, to say the least, haha. Not since School Days have I has so much fun getting into the resulting discussions of my posts, even if they did sometimes degrade to little more than Noe vs Hiromi fancamp wars.

Hope you all stick around for the Spring season, though I have absolutely no clue what I’ll be covering yet D=

Oh Kanae, your bitchiness shall forever remain a mystery

    Kimikiss and now True Tears….

Childhood friends always win….I would have preferred a Noe ending, even an Aiko ending…but Hiromi?! (Hope Hiromi fans dont bite my face off too)

It would be cool if they release a True Tears game where the player can choose an ending…I must admit True Tears was the only show I watched this season, and well, saw kimikiss thru the blogs. It was a fun ride.

Shirukii, I completely agree with you! I feel bad for Noe and this episode was like an aftermath kinda thing.

According to Dr.Frankenstein the calculations add up to this:

    Shinichirou x Noe > Shinichirou x Hiromi

I guess the animators got the > and the < mixed up

EDIT* Opener angle bracket is recognized as html code and cuts off your comment, fixed it for you, hope you didn’t lose too much, lol

Well I haven’t been really watching up with True Tears (I don’t follow it’s greatness, but I know it’s definitely not a bad series at all).

But I guess I was always rooting for Hiromi to win. But hell I understand why people didn’t want her to win (she wasn’t a responsive character until mid-part).

The only way to see it in a positive light. Is that Hiromi needed to break out of her emotional shell just as much as Noe.

I would like to compliment this series for making it ambiguous until the final 2-3 episodes to who Shinichiro would end with.
I think I would have disliked Shin ending up with Noe. Maybe it’s because I dislike characters like Noe, but I think it would have been too obvious if he ended with her for her “I don’t have tears” drama.

Ok..now how have I written this much on a series I didn’t even watch all the way through?

I guess True Tears wasn’t a series for me…I don’t know why but ef remains to be my favorite drama (wouldn’t that be controversial?).

Shirukii: “I found her to be incredibly cute in those instances. Though, doesn’t change the fact her character design is the least inspired of the three female leads.”

From the screenshots she does look cute. And the latter part. I agree. Though I guess none of the Heroines interested me much at all.

    First off: YAY HIROMI!
The show was fun to watch, despite having a soap opera feel to it. (and how I hate those…) It was interesting with the situation between Ai and Nobuse, I had hoped for the best for them. Still didn’t really care for Noe, but that mya just be my heartlessness.
The only thing I have to complain about: the mystery of the earlier angst. What happened between Hiromi’s mom and Kanae? It had to be enough to be bitchy towards Hiromi, so what the heck happened? Gah, guess it’ll be a mystery forever.

    Hey Shirukii,

Just thought that I’d mention one thing from your posts about Nobuse and Aiko. I also agree that it didn’t feel right for her to just go back to Nobuse, since these kinds of situations always feel a bit contrived, to me. Most of the time, I don’t cheer for secondary characters because I don’t really appreciate their personalities, and in this case, Nobuse was no different. I know that a lot of people will say that he was manly in his approach to Aiko, and yada yada, but I’m personally not of that opinion. The only secondary character I can say that I’ve really seriously cheered for, would be Shuu from Myself; Yourself, because to me (a guy), he really embodies the ideals of what I think it means to be a man, whereas Nobuse doesn’t. He lacks that certain edge, that certain seriousness and confidence, that puts him worlds apart.

As for the ending, I thought it was too mellow. It needed more drama, more sadness, more tears, more romance. I wanted another kiss between the couple (Shin and Hiromi) and more crying. The best way to describe my reaction to the ending was, “Oh… what? It’s over?”

It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right, just beat it, beat it…just beat it…

    Hah.
    Hah.
    Hah.

It’s okay, I’m more merciful in terms of “rubbing the other shipper’s face”.
I’m not even going to bother arguing about anything, because Hiromi won!

I’m glad Noe snapped back into common sense.
I mean WTF, why the hell did she jump a tree?! XD

The series was great in the sense that it kept us on our tiptoes.
It’s been a wild, wild ride ;D I hope for the next harem, that you and I support the same heroine.

It was really like a… “oh” kind of episode.

The cliffhanger at the end of 12, like most of the cliffhangers in this series, turned out to be played off as basically as nothing, which was disappointing.

I really don’t like Hiromi, though I do admit she finally did the right thing when she confronted Shin and asked him to make a choice. But that was she was supposed to do last episode instead of going after Noe.

So in the end, she did all kinds of things to make people dislike her so much so that she did not even like herself, but basically wins Shin by default because, let’s face it, he was always in love with her from the start – for reasons largely still unknown – and this is where I have trouble accepting this end because I am unable to find redeeming qualities in Hiromi, so I am still scratching my head as to why Shin chose her. And based on the scene with Noe where he tells her he’s in love with Hiromi but the only good things he can say are about Noe and his obvious anguish about the situation, I am not sure Shin himself knows why he choose Hiromi.

I disagree with your assessment of the bus-stop scene; I thought it was perfect. Why would Noe cry to learn about Shinichiro’s love for Hiromi? She already knew that Shinichiro loved Hiromi. From the beginning, Noe did not need love. Noe had tons of love. What Noe needed was the strength to face the realities of life and sadness.

When Shinichiro explained to her how she helped him achieve greatness in his drawings and dance, she found the strength to use her own power to raise herself up. After coming back to the confession, I believe Noe was reflecting on how far she had come, and hence she was finally able to shed tears.

Also, I can’t let the criticisms of Hiromi go so easily! Hiromi is not perfect, which is probably her major appeal. Hiromi is able to face her flaws, and I think of her as a major vehicle for the themes of the show. How many of us are so perfect, consistent, and eloquent? Given her extremely awkward situation, I think Hiromi did as well as you could expect anyone to do, and I think you are holding her to unrealistic standards that you do not apply to any of the other characters.

To all the Noe fans, don’t despair. I think both Hiromi and Noe both won. Securing Shinichiro as a boyfriend was important for Hiromi, but not really that important for Noe. Think outside the harem box!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… all you Hiromi supporters , may you find a girl just like her in real life….. You will change your minds quickly to the other side… Biatchy girls like her who rarely give you a straight answer and do whatever it takes to get what they want grow old and tiresome fast…. I girl like Noe is a rare gem indeed, someone who will encourage you and inspire… don’t happen often. Unfortunately there are far more Hiromis out there than Noes.

  11. on 30 Mar 2008 at 1:33 amanne

Good ending to me. It kept me guessing. I think it was fair to Noe. Shin obviously loved her, but just loved Hiromi more. Hiromi was flawed, but that’s what I liked about her. Noe never appealed to me. I couldn’t stand KimiKiss’ childhood friend ending, but wanted this childhood friend ending. I think the differences come down to Hiromi and Mao. One I liked, one I couldn’t stand. Hiromi is not “bitchy” . She’s insecure. She admits her flaws. Noe is fine. I think she’s unrealistic, but also has a big ego.

I also think Hiromi HAD to be forceful to Noe and her relationship with Shinn because Shinn was not doing it himself. She was doing out of desperation. Like she knew Shin had feelings for Noe, and knew he hadn’t told her to get out of his life. Back to the lie everyone loves to talk about, I think Hiromi had a lot of reason to lie to Shin at first. She thought they were related . Then before we have Jun and Shin making back alley deals to keep the whole lie alive.

Noe knew that Shinn did not love her like he loved Hiromi. That’s been a given since the hugging scene. I don’t think she should cry when she finally gets the truth in words. She knew in her heart. But after everything, and without anyone I think she finally cried.

I also think evil mom’s dislike is kind of explained when she goes and keeps Hiromi company while she waits. Maybe something has happened to her in the past? Possible dad was as indecisive as son. ;)

Overall, I enjoyed it. I think it leaves itself open to an OVA to kind of give Noe some happiness. She was truly left with nobody at the end.

  12. on 30 Mar 2008 at 1:49 amCyrilix

    @Derek:

Hiromi doesn’t seem like a loud and boisterous type. Rather, she strikes me as being a very beautiful and exquisite woman with a certain level of reservation. Underneath that image, however, she’s got determination and a clear path of what she’s trying to do, and is willing to push just enough to get the things that she wants, in a composed manner. If True Tears had more episodes detailing Hiromi and Shin together, you’d probably get to even see another side of her, when she’s with Shin, that I would imagine to be even more open and cuter than the expressions we’ve seen from her so far. Now, the last part is purely speculation, but in my mind, that’s how I create her character, one of a woman that initially had hesitation and made some bad mistakes but set her own path straight when she realized it.

Noe, on the other hand, has a bunch of the good saintly qualities everyone has mentioned already, but to me, she is still a child. I think she has considerable honesty, but lacks Hiromi’s elegance.

  13. on 30 Mar 2008 at 2:02 amShirukii

@ Toonleap: Funny about the childhood friend thing, it used to be that childhood friends would always win. There was then a period when being a childhood friend almost guaranteed your loss, and now if Kimikiss and True Tears is any indication, the former may be making a come back.

@ blissmo: Yea, the whole aftermath feeling was weird. I guess Hiromi fans were right, True Tears did end episode 10 =\

@ Avisch: I guess it’s not for everybody, though I’m surprised you loved Ef but couldn’t finish True Tears. Not saying that they’re alike or anything, but I found them to be comparable in quality as far as romance dramas are concerned.

@ Kari: Yep, Kanae’s behaviour will remain locked as one of anime’s greatest mysteries. The dissension between Hiromi and Noe fans is understandable, I don’t blame you for not sympathizing with Noe.

@ Cyrilix: Well, to give Nobuse some credit, he is a pretty cool guy. His determination is admirable, if not a little creepy, and there was that one scene where he stood up for Shin after Hiromi’s accident.

You nailed it about the ending though, way too mellow for so much buildup.

@ Servbot: Why the random MJ insert music? lol

    @ Kaelyn: ;_;

Wonder what that next harem will be, I’m clueless as to what’s coming up Spring 08.

@ Derek: Hiromi was stumbling through all this as well, perhaps not as bad as Noe, but she was pretty stupid in this whole game of love too.

Admirable that she got her act together in the end, but that doesn’t nullify the hell she put Shin through before.

And as you said, would have been nice to get some background on exactly why/how she fell for Shin.

@ Kabitzin: Noe’s self-realization is one thing, but to hear it from Shin’s own mouth is completely different. Same reason you’ll often see the types of scenes where girls are about to be rejected but stop it before the guy says it aloud. I maintain that it was an appropriate time for her to cry.

And hey, I did criticize Hiromi, but I also accepted that her situation sorta justified her actions. True humans aren’t perfect, but this is anime, where girls often possess unworldly personalities, and while flaws give characters extra depth, Hiromi’s case went a little overboard in my opinion.

I have no excuse for my bias though, a point which has come up a few times in the past.

@ voodoomage: I just realized that many of Hiromi’s defining traits are present in one of my ex’s. *shudders* Maybe my Hiromi bashing was a subconscious product thereof.

    I need to find a real life Noe ;_;

@ anne: What was wrong with Mao-neechan D=?

Wait, what? Why would Shin have told Noe to get out of his life? Even in the end when he decided on Hiromi I doubt he’d just cast Noe aside. He grew a lot as a person thanks to Noe, she gave him the determination to follow his passions and not be half hearted about it.

True, Noe had admitted to herself that Shin didn’t love her on the same level as Hiromi. But as I said to Kabitzin, having it laid out to you out loud multiplies the intensity of said realization.

Wish we had heard the explanation behind Kanae though, it’s really bugging me that she just suddenly stopped hating Hiromi like that.

OVA would probably involve chickens, lots of chickens.

  14. on 30 Mar 2008 at 2:12 amKabitzin

Your ex- could do splits, dress herself with her feet, and hit a pull-up jumper in traffic?!

The Kanae thing was weak, but not as weak as Jun siscon.

  15. on 30 Mar 2008 at 2:20 amblissmo

@Kabitzin: I agree … I wanted to see more of Jun x Noe time! XD

Ahh, my comment got cut short … but I don’t remember what was after it. >_>

  16. on 30 Mar 2008 at 2:37 amRJ

    Wow…

My reactions towards the moments of uncertainty during the episode.

    Beginning: Noe end. T_T

    “I’m in love with Hiromi…”: ^_^

    “My heart wavers”: o.o

    Singing = changing mind?: O.O

    “Let’s go out”: o.O

That’s five points that I shouted at either excitement or disappointment.

But anyways, wow. To be honest, when Kanae said waiting is hard or whatever she said to Hiromi at her apartment, I had the theory that maybe the episode might do some last minute flashbacks of Kanae’s past that might have suggested that she had liked Hiromi’s father (whoever the hell he was o.o), had chosen Hiromi’s mother instead, and that maybe it would foreshadow the rest of the episode, because her sudden appearance made me wonder, if the episode became a Noe-end, that she might know Hiromi was being rejected. However, the ending became a Hiromi end, so of course this theory is moot.

And despite wanting Hiromi to win, I have to say, shouldn’t they kiss again or something? I mean, one where Shin didn’t stand like an idiot not knowing what to do? And all things considered, Noe should’ve gotten a kiss too, if they other two were able to get one.

    Funny, your mind fuck comment all of a sudden reminded me of Zeta Gundam. How I went from harem mindset to mecha mindset is beyond me, but I’m pretty sure I can blame it on you. ^^;

Time skips are lame. This one wasn’t Myself; Yourself bad, but still lame.

Well, I guess this means there will be no more painfully slow waits for the weekend for a while, which means no discussions here for a while. I’m not watching Aria, so I won’t comment on those. If you do find something interesting though, I’ll pop on by.

  17. on 30 Mar 2008 at 8:26 amShirukii

@ Kabitzin: I don’t know about the first two, but definitely not that last one. I was talking more about the possessiveness and ability to reduce me to an emotionally confused train wreck far worse than Shin.

As for the siscon, at least it has plausible motives, the two are living together alone after all. In anime, love is almost an inevitable byproduct of that situation.

    @ blissmo: Sucks. Html flt.

@ RJ: Yea…they probably should have kissed again. Also, I was really confused about Hiromi saying “no” to Shin asking her out, yet an episode earlier she proudly told Aiko that she was Shin’s girlfriend.

But…I don’t even talk about mecha D= lol

Wow, I almost forgot about M;Y’s crappy ending time skip. True enough, at least it wasn’t that bad.

    > I’m not watching Aria

    You should probably fix that…

  18. on 30 Mar 2008 at 9:15 amItAintEazy

So the series ends with more heart-shaped tears . . . meh. After the letdowns that was the series finales of Clannad, Shigofumi, Spice and Wolf, I wanted fireworks – but all I got was a dating sim flag.

I didn’t really understand the competing fandom for the girls, Hiromi was unfairly cold and passive-agressive, and Noe was too friggin weird to handle a relationship. If I were to hold my nose and choose one, it’d be Noe, because then we’d get a chance to see possessive Hiromi get stabby.

Oh well, it might not be a total waste, might make a good date series (or something) but after this I think I had my fill of romatic dramas for a while.

Well, we lost. But even while losing PA Works is tormenting us. Even when Shin breaks up with her he tells her he “drew and danced” because of Noe. WTF? Those are one of the two most important parts of the story….He has to scream a song off-key in public to enforce his decision….In other words they can’t just let us Noe fans off, they have to say “Yeah, you guys were right about Noe’s impact on Shin…but we’re still going with Hiromi for some reason”.

Well, anyways, good show. I haven’t been back at this blog since Honey and Clover so I guess I’ll hang around. This one and THAT anime blog are probably the best ones around, having my own blog I realize that making posts like the ones you guys make are not nearly as easy as they seem.

Far as I can tell, when Hiromi asks Shin whether he showed Noe the book, and that she wanted to see it too, is the FIRST and ONLY time in the anime that I recall where Hiromi was interested in something Shin was interested in. Did she ever watch him practice the dance? Did she ever show interest in the book unless it was related to his feelings for Noe? Did she ever even ask him about his dreams or how even how he was doing?

    ~

Contrast this with Clannad. Sure, many people liked Kyou or one of other girls more, but throughout the series we see the development between Nagisa and Tomoya in various scenes – the growth of their respective characters can be directly attributed to each other. Long before they admitted it to themselves, we the audience, already knew.

    ~

Granted, Clannad had more episodes, but if you are going to have Shin end up with Hiromi, some scenes showing how they are good together before the last episode would have been nice – instead, all we ever got when they were in the same room together was angst, awkwardness or anxiety.

Good serie, 4 stars of 5. Some very exiting moments. But the end was a litle, err… kind of bland, I belived that they can give a good greath finale. but maybe is just that I rooted for Noe all the way (a loser horse, but I like to bet for them).

    Anyway, nice blog Shirukii.

    OTZ

So many comments to read through…….

True Tears was my second favourite of the winter season……it had great characters, quality animation and–most importantly in anime–lots of WTF?!? moments

Although I do agree with Shirukii that Noe should have cried at the bus-stop as opposed to the end

    overall: 9/10

Nyuu, I got spoiled when I saw your screenshot xDD

Aa, neither kimikiss or true tears ended the way I wanted it to. The only difference is that Shin actually liked Hiromi at the beginning of the series when Kouichi didn’t for Mao. I gained a lot of respect for Hiromi, though, when she admitted she was being a bitch. And while Shin did choose Hiromi, I’m glad that it wasn’t an easy decision for him. I wonder if the two of them stayed friends, for it seems like they keep their distance after the time skip.

I thought it would have been really lame if Noe didn’t cry at all, for the freaking title, and the whole thing about tears, was Noe being unable to cry. The timing is questionable, but at least she did it. The only explanation I have for her not crying when Shin told her was that she already knew, like Hoshino knew Kouichi loved Mao. The only thing that’s wrong with that is that she should’ve cried when she realized it, but I guess I’ll accept her moping about it, since I guess she was still hopeful. As for why she decided to cry in the spring, my take on it is that she got over it and all, and to see the symbol of Shin’s declaration of his like for her ruined brings back all the memories.

And I’m happy with the Nobuse x Aiko end. It makes some wonder why she bothered to break up with him at all, but Aiko really only started dating him because of Shin. It’s nice to see them going out when she truly feels something for him, when she’s over Shin, instead of pulling the poor guy along.

And just props to Jun, man. PROPS.

As always, great blogging! Can’t wait what you pick for the Sping, Rukii!

I loved this show, all the way down. The writing and art work was excellent. I enjoyed all of the complications and symbolism of this work. I really hope whom ever brings this over to the US will do a good job of dubbing and release it in a HD format.

Aiko remains girl that I like most in this story. I really would had liked to have seen more of her.

Kanae is Hiromi’s mirror (I had to throw that out, I’m not going to explain why I think so because, it would ruin it for others imagination.) Shin chose poorly, Noe is a far better person than Hiromi will ever be.

  26. on 30 Mar 2008 at 4:47 pmnefesco

Phew, i can easily give this episode 10/10… HOWEVER, i think Kimikiss justifies better for the protagonist’s final decision. I still don’t see why Hiromi is picked. Maybe Shin’s convinced she needs him more than the ever independent Noe, or because Noe can handle the breakup better? Either way, it’s over now. Poor Noe, poor us Noe fans, our wish doesn’t come true *sob*

  27. on 30 Mar 2008 at 4:48 pmlolikitsune

    >>It was at that point that Noe should have cried

But it WAS a dud bomb. It didn’t matter at that point because it was already known. Tsk tsk.

I’m Hiromi’s fan but I won’t bite anyone who hate Hiromi. I agree with Shirukii that the ending was kind weak. The pace and music didn’t go that well. But my choice won so I’ll let that slide XD. I tend to guess stuff pretty well when it comes to harem anime. Usually the intro song tell you a lot of things. When I saw the intro for the first time, I can tell that Aiko won’t be part of love triangle so it’s always come down to Hiromi and Noe.

OK, I’m sorry again, Shirukii. I wasn’t plan to write stuff about Kimikiss again but I can’t stop it. I don’t hate Kouichi x Mao thing. Well, maybe I don’t like the idea that they struck at their childhood memories. Therefore, I agree with you that Kouichi made the right choice but the thing I don’t like is his personality.

I don’t like a guy character that doesn’t take responsible. You can say that he already said that he said “sorry” to Yuumi but to me that’s no different from push off your responsibility. Maybe I put this thing too much to real life stuff but if I’m Kouichi I will never go back to Mao regardless how much I love Mao because I think that it’s my responsible to be with Yuumi and I don’t like taking back my word. Second, you can say that Kouich love Mao not Yuumi. Well, what if Yuumi and Mao switch place. In other word, Kouichi met Yuumi during when they were young and Kouichi never met Mao until high school. I think the result will be opposite. Then again, there is right or wrong when it comes to love so I can see your point as well.

I still believe hiromi looks and acts a lot like shins mother.

  30. on 30 Mar 2008 at 6:11 pmSiva

LOL the ending is not the best, But comments on this episode are crazy o.O

    >>”Although I do agree with Shirukii that Noe should have cried at the bus-stop as opposed to the end”

If she was to cried at the bus-stop, would it be waving Shin’s heart more? Would it changed the ending?

    >>”Kanae is Hiromi’s mirror (I had to throw that out, I’m not going to explain why I think so because, it would ruin it for others imagination.)”

Didn’t you just mean Shin’s dad is Shin’s mirror?

    >>”But it WAS a dud bomb. It didn’t matter at that point because it was already known. Tsk tsk.”

    T_T

Anyway I still enjoy the battle between Noe and Hiromi alot.

  31. on 30 Mar 2008 at 8:22 pmMichael

Shin wrote a picture book about Noe’s obsession with cocks.

    WIN!

  32. on 31 Mar 2008 at 10:07 pmlala

    fucking idiot shinichiro
fine go with hiromi, dumb bastard
ill be taking noe for myself . . . idoit

  33. on 31 Mar 2008 at 10:49 pmstevelikesanime

ok I call an alternate ending with Noe being the winner
this is got to be one of the closest between who whould win or not
I thought Shin was gonna pick Now but then he started singing that stupid song that Noe sang
Like i said I call for an alternate ending
this was so close for both girls
I think that Noe is the most saddest
because her brother freakin was incest all over her
and now she lives alone with no one
but I feel that she will find someone special soon
this series was so great that I had to give it a 9/10
although the ending was a bit if a letdown. People will enjoy the drama or this and will be anticipating one episode to another

  34. on 16 Apr 2008 at 1:37 pmCipik

It was a nice anime, although the ending was a bit dissapointing…Hiromi cryed all the time…I was hoping that Shin will choose Noe whoom tears where rare and should apear at the end in a good circumstance.
All in all,the decision was cruel(I guess that what the author wanted),all the time it gived me hopes that Shin will be with Noe.
They should make another ending,in wich Noe “wins”.

    >>>>”Although I do agree with Shirukii that Noe should have cried at the bus-stop as opposed to the end”

    >>If she was to cried at the bus-stop, would it be waving Shin’s heart more? Would it changed the ending?

It would have been a more difficult decision for Shin to chose Hiromi, but then would he chose Noe? perhaps … perhaps not.

Perhaps you know ,,Rumbling Hearts”. There they have made another ending because nobody likes mitzuki xD.
It’s possible that they made another ending for us too.
I would be so lucky ^-^ or they should make an Ova where they make Noe happy, also if she can’t get Shin.
I think the end was not fair to us noe-fans :( Noe is the only one being alone. Nobuse x Aiko , Shin x Hiromi, but Noe has no one.
I can’t imagine that noe has the same relationship with her brother after this incest thing.
And Hiromi was a character which i don’t like much.

After all i hope for a second saison for True tears^^ They should see that the people from europe like this Anime.
True tears was realy fast licensed.
Noe perhaps lost, but there is no thing that can say me that hiromi and shin a lucky being together. Perhaps because Shin doesn’t know exactly why he chose Hiromi. And nobody can say me that Shin hasn’t love or is loving Noe.
You see guys there is a lot of stuff for a new saison^^
I’m hoping for it, so hope with me !! :D

After I finished this anime, I was left feeling so angry. And I think I know why… SHIN’ICHIRO IS AN IDIOT. 1. He should of sealed the deal with Hiromi and took advantage of her while he’s at it. 2. Refer to 1. and 3. Refer to 1 again.
So Many Many Chances to Do it….. Why didn’t he… why is he such an idiot.
O btw. Hiromi is the best. She’s the hottest one of them all. Maybe he can keep Ai-chan on the mistress side but NEVER ever should he even think about that stupid chicken loving girl.

  38. on 25 Apr 2009 at 11:56 amSad Guy

I don’t like the ending at all.. I don’t like Hiromi.
I was wishing Shin can be with Noe as I think Noe is the one who was hurt the most. Was quite surprised that Shin said he love hiromi at the busstop, so angry that almost wanted to stop watching the ending. They should come out an alternate ending with Noe!!!

  39. on 09 Jul 2009 at 6:10 pmR

I disagree that Noe should have cried at the bus stop. It panned out exactly as expected in that scene, to me anyway. Throughout the series, while she was a bit nutty, Noe seemed a little more in control of herself than the rest of the bunch. To me, she had already gotten to the same realization that Hiromi had reached, that Shinichirou would ultimately pick one, and she would have to live with whatever he decided. I just couldn’t imagine her crying there. On the other hand, if the situation were reversed, I could see Hiromi bawling.

Also, I disagree that Hiromi was being hypocritical. I mean, she thought they were siblings in the beginning.
