Actually, that’s an understatement, Kyou transcends hotness

Warning, this is going to be a Kyou image heavy post and probably an equal amount of me going on about how awesome she is. Rival fancamps beware, Fuko lovers especially.

Best. Episode. Ever. Bar none. It rocketed Tomoyo from one of my least liked characters to probably my second favourite and needless to say I was quite happy with the gratituous Kyou screen time as well. But hell will freeze over before they have a hope at winning, watered down versions of their arcs are being carried out in parallel meaning the final arc, and the win, will surely go to Nagisa.

Episode Rating: 10/10

Following their display of perseverance in the basketball match, the music club consents and agrees to share Koumura-sensei as their club adviser. However, the student counsel sets them back yet again, denying their request to share advisers, saying that the teacher must be present at meetings so the best they would get is club activities every other day. Suddenly, everyone is reminded of Nagisa’s weak body condition as she collapses and has to be taken home to rest, meaning she’ll be missing school for a while.

The next morning, Tomoya gets another surprise as Tomoyo hovers above his bed opening his curtains beckoning him to wake up. Surprised, to say the least, Tomoya listens to her explain that as her friend she can’t let him continue to be late everyday and so will be coming to his house to wake him up every day, since it’s on the way anyways. Not wanting to suffer alone, Tomoya brings Tomoyo over to Sunohara’s place to wake him up as well, and together the three of them dash to school to make it to class on time.

Sharp as ever, Kyou notices this new morning routine and “invites” (read: forces) Tomoya to join her and Ryou for lunch again. The three of them enjoy Kyou’s cooking together while Kyou not so subtly acts as a matchmaker between them. Afterwards, Kyou tells Tomoya to look forward to tomorrow, as Ryou will be cooking, she then lectures Ryou, saying that she has to make a move quickly or Tomoyo will steal him away from her.

After school, Tomoyo sneaks up on Tomoya and Sunohara and starts asking him questions about why he doesn’t have a girlfriend. She ends up inviting herself to walk home with them, but Sunohara has another idea. He drags Tomoyo along to a shifty neighborhood where local gangs pick fights with him all the time, kicks back and enjoys watching the scamper away in fear when they see Tomoyo, seems like the rumors of her beating up gangs is true after all. Tomoya notices the situation is rather uncomfortable for her Tomoyo and manages to con Sunohara into treating them to a cafe visit in return. As they split up to head home, Tomoyo thanks Tomoya for helping her get out of there and tells him that it’s fun to spend time with him.

Morning comes once again, and sure enough, Tomoyo shows up to wake Tomoya up, just as promised. Not one to let Sunohara off the hook, Tomoya drags her over to his place to wake him up as well, worse yet, his usual stupidity gets him an early morning Chun-Li-esque kick spam.

Tomoya’s routine continues with lunch with the Fujibayashi sisters, cooking courtesy of Ryou this time, who is unexpectedly much worse than her sister, knocking Botan out with a tamagoyaki. After school, Tomoya kills some time by sitting all alone in the drama club room, angsting away about Nagisa being gone. He then decides to head to the reference library for some Yukine brewed coffee along which often comes along with weird book recommendations, this time it’s a book with various charms. Tomoya ends up trying a charm that involves stacking two 10-yen coins on top of each other, if done properly it will get him trapped in a gym storage room with a girl of his choice, figuring Kyou would be the most level headed in the situation, he goes with her.

And sure enough, soon afterwards, Kyou shows up carrying a handful of volleyballs asking for his help to clean up after a late running gym class. While the two are still inside the storage room, the open door is spotted and closed by Mitsui, locking them in.

When Tomoya realizes what’s happened, he immediately apologizes to Kyou, with the charm in mind. But Kyou misinterprets his apology, thinking he set the situation up, she panics and illusionary thoughts of her betraying Ryou and her “first time” start running wildly through her head. Tomoya tries to explain to her that it’s the charm’s doing, but Kyou wonders if such a pinpointed charm exists, but then realizes a hidden meaning behind it, out of everyone he picked her to get stuck with. Kyou continues to panic as Tomoya starts to take off his clothes, but his actions end up being the reversal charm, requiring him to strip to his waist and declare “Curses are nothing to me” three times. The reversal charm works almost instantaneously and the two are let out of the storage room. Kyou apologizes for acting so weird, the two share an awkward laugh and part ways.

Tomoya’s crazy day isn’t over just yet though, Tomoyo shows up to walk home with him when the two are confronted by the gangs she scared off the day before, looking for a fight. Tomoya tries to stop her since a fight on school grounds would surely wreck her chances of becoming student counsel president, Fuko even crosses dimensions to try and stop the fight from happening, but in the end words don’t suffice and Tomoyo has to lay down some physical punishment. But just as Tomoya feared, the teachers show up to break the fight and demand to know who’s responsible, just as Tomoyo is about to own up, Tomoya cuts in and takes the blame, a dangerous move which given his past record could lead to his suspension.

Thoughts

My paragraph on the Kyou gym storage scene doesn’t come anywhere close to doing it justice, you have to watch it to get the full effect, like I did…about 30 times so far. I really can’t emphasize enough how much Kyou owns every other character in Clannad. I’m slowly making my way through the game and it’s the same story there, though ironically enough, the general consensus is even though she’s awesome in general, her arc is one of the weaker ones. I haven’t gotten to it yet, so I can’t comment on how accurate that statement is.

I might be putting myself at risk of starting a faction war between the various fancamps of Clannad, but out of the entire cast Kyou is the only one who doesn’t fall under Key’s retard moe umbrella and is thus superior. Not that I dislike the other girls, I find Nagisa adorably innocent, Fuko cure in a little sister sort of way and Kotomi because she could probably teach me differential equations and boundary value problems. But Kyou is the only one, in the anime, whose character actually has depth and goes beyond simple classification under a single moe stereotype. No longer are we stuck with nothing but pseudo-lolis with one liner moe catchphrases like “uguu~” and “auu~”, not that anything is wrong with that, it’s just nice to see more mature women take center stage.

I still can’t get over the fact that KyoAni is giving Kyou so much screen time and will cop out at the end with the expected Nagisa end. I guess Kyou’s story is too typical for a KeyAni work, the whole concept of a girl cheering on her friend/sister/cousin/etc only to fall for the guy herself is admittedly overdone, and it wouldn’t be KeyAni if they didn’t work in miracles or supernatural forces into their final arc.

Sucks for Tomoyo too, who will no doubt end up on the losing side of the race for Tomoya’s heart. Though, there’s already enough of a fanbase for Tomoyo, she had her own spinoff game following her after story and I believe she has an upcoming manga devoted to her as well. Thanks largely to this episode, I can see why she’s so popular, she’s excellent waifu material. Her blunt way of dealing with various situations is nothing short of hilarious as well, she is outside the bounds of embarrassment and naivety, nonchalantly speaking her mind at all times.

Fuko rant commence! Once again, whyyyyyy? What was the point, she didn’t do anything! This is beyond my personal bias, having Fuko show up at random times just serves no purpose. Just how I got tired of Tomoyo’s combo counter earlier in the series, I’m quickly tiring of seeing Fuko show up at key conflict moments only to do absolutely nothing and run off with the characters staring blankly saying “Wow, she sure looks familiar”. I like Fuko but, for the third time, she needs to stay in her coma to the end. NOT because I don’t want to see her again, but because her waking up at the end will be cheapened by her continuing cameos throughout the series. Instead of a nostalgic reminiscence to Fuko’s arc and how great it is to see her again, I foresee myself thinking “So…is it the real one this time around?” I don’t want to see that happen, Fuko deserves better than to have her touching reunion ruined for such unnecessary cameo appearances.

One thing I found particular interesting to see in this episode is how they benched Nagisa for a while to free up time for Kyou and Tomoyo’s story lines to play out. Truly, it would be awkward to have Nagisa around while all this is happening, actually, in the game Show ▼

But given that she’s the main heroine of the anime plot line, meaning she must have the backing of quite a few fanboys out there, I would have thought KyoAni would try their wide appeal approach and cram Nagisa screen time in anyways.

Next episode looks like it’ll continue along the same lines, Tomoya taking the blame for Tomoyo’s fight will get him suspended and prompt house visits from every girl on the planet, showering him with food and their latent sex appeal. Damn Tomoya, what a lucky bastard, I wish I had one tenth of the fun in high school.

A Ryou is fine too, but have a Kyou stitch instead :3

First, two things needs to be said: Hawt Kyou’s Hawwt and Gar Tomoya’s GAR. Seriously, where does he get his free time keeping himself cut like that?

In any case, I would like to see his thought process when he thought being stuck in a gym storage room with Kyou would be “all right.” I thought all those dictionaries and scooters thrown at his head would make him think otherwise.

I got converted to the deliciousness that is Kyou a long time ago, but this episode solidified it. I know I’m going to be disappointed by the Nagisa BAWWWW ending we are headed for, but in the meantime hooray for the pandering to us Kyouists.

Really the best episode except for Fuko. when I saw star (I mean starfish) I get like “not again” but it she was there again :D. nvm I then watch the Kyou and Tomoya in the storadge room :D I almost die laughing (I know that almost isn’t good enough). hm I am going to watch that part again :D and again :D. wonder what it will be next week :D.

Not going to lie…..I am a Nagisa shipper, but I had the hots for Kyou this episode.

Am I falling to the dark-side, Shirukii?

Doesn’t seem so dark. You guys have cookies here.

    >>But hell will freeze over before they have a hope at winning

I’m getting sick of this “girl winning guy” mentality. They’re seriously not competing for anything so great; he can be nice sometimes but Tomoya’s really not that hot. You know, the whole self-hate thing, the whole lack of future thing, etc…

Rather than a question of “which girl will win the guy” we should be asking “which group of fans will win the producers”—because really, all we care about is how hot Kyou is.

20+ kyou screenshots just as planned…*snicker*

Also, Fuuko’s appearance was actually super awesome etc etc

Yea this was the best Clannad episode so far; I need to get this

game so I can play Tomoyo’s and Kyou’s arc.

  8. on 08 Feb 2008 at 7:30 pmkenshin514

This episode is too awesome. Kyou is #1 and Tomoyo is my #2 of my favorite characters in Clannad. So when these two greatest characters in Kyoani join force together, it’s like a gift from heaven XD

With Tomoyo’s enegetic personality and Kyou’s hot poses, scoring 10 out of 10 isn’t enough for this episode, Shirukii. You lucky bastard, Tomoya. You got two hot girls that all over you in this episode and yet your mind is only thinking about Nagisa?? Sorry, no offense, Nagisa-chan. Oh well, I hope they will continue the Kyou’s awesomeness as much as they can for the remaining episode.

Bawww, why does is have to be Nagisa D:

  10. on 08 Feb 2008 at 8:20 pmMichael

    Ahh I don’t want a Nagisa end >:O

  11. on 08 Feb 2008 at 9:16 pmNightingale

Well, I don’t really mind a Nagisa end,
Actually, I wouldn’t mind a Kyou end either,
In fact, I won’t really complain about a Tomoyo end either.

Sooo… who’s camp does that make me??? OH SHI- *flees from flying tomatoes and rocks from fancamps*

Everything works nicely for me except…
This is my first time complaining about it:
Fuuko… just stop randomly popping up and not helping already… ORZ

  12. on 08 Feb 2008 at 9:17 pmKanon_fan82

    WOW @_@…….Kyou+closet+thigh-highs=LOVE :D

    OTZ

Tomoyo is pretty awesome too……I love when she spotted Sunohara’s porn that was classic :)…..She can seriously kick some ass! Very loveable character

@ EE: The twin route is posted on Youtube (in English text) if u can deal with the small screen:

@ ItAintEazy: Forgot about his Harvest Moon project a couple episodes back already? That probably helped.

And I don’t know about Tomoya, but I’d probably think something along the lines of “Kyou’s hot, wouldn’t it be awesome to get stuck in a gym storage room with her” but that might just be me, lol.

@ Greggo: Indeed, I can’t really complain, even when the Nagisa end does come. For me, Clannad will always be memorable for the delicious Kyou moments.

@ PCgame: I have watched that scene no less than 50 times already. Beat me if you can!

@ Pyrrhusonline: Continue your descent into the dark side! We’ve got cake too.

@ lolikit: Huh, never thought of that. I just took the term “winning” for granted. It’s synonymous with the one who gets the guy in the end, whether or not their future looks bright.

@ Totali: I’m continually amazed by your loyalty to Fuko in the face of many superior female specimens =P

@ EE: Go for it, it’s not at all hard to find and apply the patch.

@ kenshin514: They better keep the Kyou service going for as long as possible, she’s just too awesome to relegate to the sidelines. And hey, how higher can I rate than 10/10? I don’t want to break my rating system lol

    @ Kaelyn: Because the world is a cruel and unfair place ;_;

@ Michael: To be fair, it is arguably the best route of them all. The story is very well done and her after story is made of BAAAAW

@ Nightingale: Seems like everyone’s patience for Fuko is wearing thin. And you don’t have to submit to a fanbase, you’re free to float around in the middle and share the love.

@ Kanon_fan82: Tomoyo surprised me this episode, she’s a great character when given screen time to do more than beat Sunohara up. I love how nothing seems to faze her.

First of all, this is the best episode so far..
And I want more episodes like this..

    A Nagisa end is..ok..
Because I can’t imagine other girls ending with Tomoya..
    Kyou is preferred though…

I love the gym room scene..(lucky lucky Tomoya..)
It made me love Kyou even more..
    And Tomoyo is fine too…
Usually I don’t pay attention to Tomoyo much..
But, this episode changed my view…

The Fuuko randomly showing up thing is getting old..
    It totally destroyed the mood…

  16. on 08 Feb 2008 at 11:24 pmsolgae

This episode was just pure comedic gold. Seriously. Kyoani managed to put in the storage room scenario extremely well. On a side note, there were 5 possible ways on whom you will end up inside with in the game – Nagisa, Kyou, Tomoyo, Akio(!), and finally, Sunohara(!!!). Kyou has actually 2 variations, and while Fuuko is selectable, Tomoya will turn down the idea by himself and end up being with Sunohara.

I agree with you on Fuuko. They need to stop doing this totally unnecessary stuff. Just because it was part of the game, doesn’t mean they have to include it in parts that wasn’t even on the game.

It was great to see the Fujibayashi sisters and Tomoyo getting a lot more development, with especially the latter one since she wasn’t getting much screen time until now. But given how Tomoya was acting during the whole episode…….

And just notice how Tomoya NEVER blushed even once, not even when he was stuck inside with Kyou and with the camera showing off Kyou’s various parts. Try switching Tomoya with, say, Makoto(!!!!!) and imagine what might have happened.

Well said…Kyou (and to a lesser extent Tomoyo) are the main reasons I’m still watching Clannad. I don’t get why Key thinks broken/borderline retarded is so moe, but for me Kyou out-moes the rest of the cast easily.

“… Try switching Tomoya with, say, Makoto(!!!!!) and imagine what might have… ”

SSSS- TOPPU STOPPU!!!!! STOP!!! Don’t Even Think about it…… unless anyone is willing to risk his very existence being demolished by mobs and mobs of angry fanboy militia…

  19. on 09 Feb 2008 at 12:39 amXelloss

Fuko is like a summon. She randomly appears to save the day, kinda like Odin in FF8.

But ya the new episode is great, and really easy to see what might happen.

  20. on 09 Feb 2008 at 1:40 amOwen S

Oh yes, I have to agree. This was a great Kyou episode. I think you summed it up pretty well when you said that she’s a cut above the rest — I’ve always thought that the others pale in comparison to her. Too bad we’re not going to see a Kyou end. :(

I’ve gotta say that my soft spot for her doesn’t come without a price, though. I always end up feeling so dirty for falling for what’s just another bit of Key’s moe equation perfected, although I’m consoling myself with the fact that since I don’t know what’s going to happen, she might just have the depth required to fanboy about in a guilt-free manner later on. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

    @Shirukii
No problems with that :D but wonder will be able to beat my about 30 times watching the second part of 7th episode of ef a tale of memories (the one with Miyako spamming Hiro phone :D )

@Owen S: Yes, Kyou is ahead of the other heroines since she has a well-rounded character. And a lot of character depth, unlike some other heroines. And we all know that character depth is never a bad thing.

    2 things i like about this episode….

    1.No Nagisa HAHAHAHA

    2. tomoyoxtomoya FTW!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA

yesh im on the tomoyo band wagging, i hope kyou picks a fight with tomoyo so she can kick her arse. HAHAHAHA

    >>I just took the term “winning” for granted. It’s synonymous with the one who gets the guy in the end, whether or not their future looks bright.

Think about it. Getting is clearly losing, in this case: you acquire for yourself an emo, unmotivated, unskilled, disinterested, unintelligent nice-guy. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT? Throw that shit out, girls.

Not posting enough on CLANNAD has left me in despair!

I hear the gym storage room scene was originally in the Yukine side route. Thus proving that Kyoto Animation knows how to take the best of all the routes and mesh them into a linear anime…

Tomoyo is my favorite. So I really liked this episode, along with all the awesomeness of Kyou.

“under Key’s retard moe umbrella and is thus superior.”
I agree with all this. and I made a post on how the “main-heroines” of most KEY games I never love.
the only KEY default-main-heroine that I will ever love is Rin from Little Busters!. In fact every heroine in Little Busters! is great (to an extent their more happy than the girls in CLANNAD)

proxyman: Tomoyo vs. Kyou ROUND TWO!…..that’d be awesome.

and on the Fuko scene. I actually could sympathize with that bully “how long do you intend to keep this comedy show around!”………and yeah..Hito Heat?….WTF.

And it’s hilarious how most of the side characters look so ugly.

  28. on 10 Feb 2008 at 5:30 pmKari

*obligatory YAY FUKO! cheer* Her bizzare entrance-exit made me laugh before commencing the battle scene.
Not that the gym storage room scene wasn’t hilarious, it really was.
I torn about which girl I’m beginning to like more. I like both Kyou and Tomoyo so thumbs up on all the screen time for them. They’d both make a cute match for Tomoya and yet it’s obvious that he can’t get Nagisa out of his mind.

Gyah! Why do they do this to me?!

  29. on 11 Feb 2008 at 11:37 amW4

This talk about girl-other-than-Nagisa endings gives me a fanfic idea which is up for grabs.

It starts with the girl and her robot doll in the vacant world. The doll walks toward her.

    *BAMF*

The girl’s hair turns purple and becomes waist-length, and she starts yelling at at the doll to speed go faster. The doll is confused.

    *BAMF*

The girl’s hair turns silver. A tree branch falls toward the doll, but the girl 271-hit-combos it away. If the doll could gulp nervoulsy, it would.

    *BAMF*

The girl’s hair is now strawberry-blonde-green and shoulder-length. She talks in great detail about starfish. The doll tries to rub its eyes with its appendages.

    *BAMF*

The girl’s hair is purple and neck-length now. She apologizes profusely to the doll.

    *BAMF*

The girl is now a blond boy who chastizes the doll for not being cute. “How are we gonna get the chicks with you looking like a Frankenstein?!?!?” he yells.

    *BAMF*

The boy reverts to a girl, albiet one with dark purple hair. She sits down, pulls a book out of nowhere and reads it.

    *BAMF*

The girl is now a boy again, furiously typing on a laptop computer about how awesome Kyou is.

    *BAMF*

The girl now has a second small doll which she can control telepathically.

    *BAMF*

The girl is now *really* good at kung-fu.

    *BAMF*

The girl now has an unusual fascination with chickens.

    *BAMF*

The girl now has cat ears.

    *BAMF*

The girl fires a beam which destroys the moon.

    *BAMF*

    etc.

Yes, fighting fate is all well and good, but it can have some pretty screwy consequences. The premise for this would-be tale is that alternate paths in the past have immediate and dramatic consequences in the future. Played for lots of laughs, especially when 17 versions of Tomoya’s daughter crash-land into the present. Many, many beatings ensue after the likes of Kyou, Tomoyo and Sunohara are repeatedly called “Mommy.”

What do you think, sirs and ma’ams?

  30. on 14 Feb 2008 at 5:12 pmPyrrhusonline

I just took another look at the situation between Kyou, Ryou and Tomoya…..

    …..

Say Tomoya does get with Ryou. As her sister, does Kyou gets seconds or does she join in?

    Just a thought =x
