Wow this episode made up for last week’s and then some, a return to the great balancing of comedy and plot development. And of course there was Kyou, oh God was she ever awesome in this episode, but she seems doomed to lose the race for Tomoya’s heart, a sad reality which I’ll get to later.

Episode Rating: 9.5/10

Nagisa and Tomoya bring Sunohara’s sister, Mei, to his dorm, where she’s appalled by its messy state and makes short work of cleaning things up. She leaves the room for a second to toss in a load of laundry when Nagisa suggests to Tomoya that they should keep the whole thing about Sunohara being in love with him a secret from Mei, but Nagisa sucks at keeping secrets and she ends up blurting the whole story out in front of Mei. Fortunately, Sunohara returns soon after and everything as far back as Tomoya pretending to be Sunohara over the phone, is sorted out.

Since Mei can’t stay in the boys dorm, Nagisa invites her to stay at her house where she is happily greeted with the Furukawa familiy’s usual idiotic conversations. Amidst the fun and games, Nagisa tells Mei about the basketball game that Sunohara set up for the drama club, Mei’s school is on break anyways so she promises to stick around and watch.

The following day Tomoya runs into Tomoyo on his way to school, running uncharacteristically late, they dash to school to beat the bell together while Kyou looks on from a distance, annoyed that yet another girl has appeared around Tomoya. Later, Sunohara and Tomoya ask Kyou to be the third member for the 3on3 with the basketball club, which she agrees to with surprising speed, but sets a condition that Tomoya has to eat lunch with her later.

Lunch time rolls around and Tomoya waits in the class for Kyou when Tomoyo shows up instead, on the pretense of wanting to talk to him about his delinquency. But when Kyou shows up she takes it the wrong way, Tomoyo, unphased, suggests that perhaps she likes Tomoya, Kyou denies it rather unconvincingly. Tomoyo turns to Tomoya for confirmation that he doesn’t have a girlfriend and thus her talking to him shouldn’t inconvenience anyone, but she’s clearly lost in the pace of the conversation, in the end Kyou grabs Tomoya and drags him off to the cafeteria to have lunch with her and Ryou, which seems to have been Kyou’s ultimate goal in the first place.

After school the next day is the big event, the 3on3 game with the basketball club with the music club watching on. Kyou is fired up after having a squabble with the basketball club about the match and it being a waste of time for them. But the three of them quickly show the basketball club that they’re not to be taken lightly, quickly pulling ahead when the game starts off against the freshman members. Tomoya expected this and the plan all along was to build as big a lead until the regulars came on, which happens with five minutes left and an 11 point difference. The regular members are on a completely different level and their 11 point lead quickly reverses into a one point deficit, but they manage to pull it off in the end with a blind shot from Tomoya, giving them the win by one point.

After the game, Nagisa and Tomoya go with Sunohara to see Mei off, who has to return home. Afterwards they head to a victory party set up by Kyou and wonder whether their efforts in the basketball game will be enough to sway the music club to give up Koumura-sensei as their advisor.

Thoughts

Tsundere Kyou is win, nutbladder = broken beyond repair

Yep, Kyou’s tsundere scene was so awesome that it merited an entire block of screencaps, a service Shana has also been treated to in the past. Also, thumbs up to KyoAni for keeping Kyou in her thigh highs even while playing basketball.

I’m still wondering whether the Fujibayashi arc will be worked into Clannad, with eight episodes left and Tomoyo + Nagisa to attend to, one of the arcs is going to get dropped off. Given how much Kyou has permeated the other arcs, I’m betting that they’ll hold off on going through her dedicated route, especially given that Tomoyo is pretty popular (she got her own spin off game!). And it’s not like Kyou was going to win anyways…

…because of this scene, which in my opinion seals the Nagisa end. As the final seconds of the basketball ticked away and victory looked like an impossibility, Tomoya’s pessimism takes over and he begins to recall the futility of all his actions in the past, wondering what he was doing playing a 3on3 anyways. And then, Nagisa, out of all the girls, calls out to him, he snaps out of it without a second thought and his body moves instinctively to shoot the game winning buzzer beater. This scene reminded me of a point that I often forget while watching Clannad, before meeting Nagisa, Tomoya’s life was pretty crappy, meeting her was the catalyst that allowed him to make friends with so many people and focus his attention on helping people.

Oh well, not like I wasn’t expecting it from day one anyways.

Comedic balance was spot on again this episode, I lol’d so hard when Tomoyo instinctively shoved her lunch up Sunohara’s nose and thought nothing of it. Add to that pretty much every scene with Sunohara in it, because he’s a walking punchline. There wasn’t that misplaced forced drama that was present last episode either, so the comedy was allowed to take its full effect this time around.

If I had one complaint, it would be that Mei came and went so fast, it’ll be the epilogue until we see her again, if even that. It’s too bad, it was great hearing Tamura Yukari’s voice again, forever ingrained in my head as the voice Nanoha, a voice which is much more suited to loli roles. They should have kept her around, Clannad could use a token loli/imouto character.

Oh, actually, one more minor complaint, what was with the speedlines in the basketball game? Come on KyoAni, I know you guys didn’t have to resort to that.

Anyways, the preview for next week doesn’t really hint at where we’re going next, but it did certainly do a good job in isolating Tomoya. So ronery ;_;

Ryou, fine too, etc etc.

Wait, Sunohara had nose sex with a hot dog ><

One word: Epic. Now if only Kyou kept the tail from Kotomi’s arc…

Granted I’m a huge Nagisa fan for Romantic purposes, but Kyou definitely has a charm about her. I’d her tail.

Many Kyou fans will be pleased with the different face expressions of pure tsundere.

Also, I want KyoAni to make a spinoff of Clannad, Magical Kitsune Princess Kyou.

  4. on 01 Feb 2008 at 7:17 pmServbot

Oooh KyouAni! They shouldve done that! Mmm… basketball bouncey.

Btw, that’s a great “stages of tsundere” chart you made and then Ryou is fine too.

Can a hot dog fit into a human nose? Ballpark?

NEEDS MORE EPS. Just to cover all paths… >.

Yes!! my tomoyo least got SOME screen time. This episode was surprisingly very good all the other non arc episodes were not as good as this one.

ps. What the hell, kyou is not even on a team and she made Hiromi looked like crap. yea i know two different shows xD

  7. on 01 Feb 2008 at 7:45 pmkenshin514

Haha, I thought it was really funny when Mei brought out Dougu and ask if Sonohara wants it. Mei’s appearance is really light-up in the beginning of this episode. To bad that she has to leave already. When she said “I’m shock,” it reminded me of Ayu (Kanon). Tomoyo’s love is in the air really make the story even more interesting. I wish she could have more screentime though. But the best of all was Kyou’s blushing. That was so damn cute !!! Kyou FTW all the way.

I didn’t expect much out of the basketball match. I thought it would be better if Tomoya actually made the basket without the shout from Nagisa. I thought that was too cliche. Oh well, any good episode from Kyoani. Some people said that Nagisa’s arc is coming to end within 3-4 episodes and the rest series will be the after story stuff. What do you think, Shirukii??

BTW, from the last time, I liked the heroines in this order: Kyou >>> Tomoyo >> Kotomi > Nagisa = Fuko. I didn’t choose Ryou because I didn’t think she is part of the whole heroines thing. I mean, look at the intro song. There isn’t any of screen shot with her name on it like other heroines. But still I like Ryou a lot probably even more than Nagisa. Sorry Nagisa-chan =(

Best scene of this whole ep:

Tomoya [to Sunohara]: There’s a cute girl here to see you????

Sunohara: Really??? [leaps into the air]

[Mei gives a formal greeting, Sunohara promptly crashes on table]

I watched that scene about 4 times :D

Those were some mad techno beats for the basketball game LOL..so cheesy…..it felt like I was watching Run Lola Run

As much as I enjoyed this ep. (and I did immensely) I don’t know that it moved forward much in terms of storyline……I’m kind of worried with only 8 eps. to go, the twins will probably get the short end of the stick :(

Btw, what the hell was that statue thing that Mei was trying to give her brother??????

  9. on 01 Feb 2008 at 8:28 pmPyrrhusonline

@ Kanon_fan82: “Dogu”, or a clay doll of sorts. Tomoya was pretending to be Sunohara to his little sister, Mei, and when she asked what she should bring him as a present, he responded with Dogu (I think, sp?). Ep.15 for reference

Thanks……I totally forgot about that :)

    @everyone:

Totally off topic but just finished watching ep. 04 of Shigofumi…..It’s pretty awesome :)

I highly suggest watching this series :)

Leaving aside the fact that challenging the school basketball team in order to see whether one particular teacher will be an advisor to either the choir club or the drama club makes just about as much sense as finding an amnesiac girl collapsed on the street and not immediately taking her to the hospital or calling the police (then giving that same girl a cat even though another occupant of the house is allegic), it was still a riot. Especially when both Kyou and Tomoya starts treating Sunohara as an errand boy. It’s too bad though, I will miss Rika-chama – I mean Mei. Her stay was too short.

@Shirukii: Where is my “Nagisa is fine too”?

@Kanon_fan82: LOL, that is the reason why Bandai licensed it.

I’m also disappointed on how little screen time Mei has gotten on the anime. She played a pretty significant role whether she appeared in Sunohara siblings or Nagisa storyline.

Still, I liked how they focused on Tomoya’s inner struggles in this episode, and most likely on the next episode as well, since that is one of the most important parts on this series.

And lastly, Kyou was excellent in this episode. Blushing face FTW. She’s excellent as she has always been…..but only as a supporting character unfortunately.

  17. on 02 Feb 2008 at 1:15 amRoy Mustang

BTW, KyouAni…. A basketball episode without Dribble..Shoot-o?! I want my random Fuko!

  18. on 02 Feb 2008 at 7:55 amW4

I’m going to take what will probably be an unpopular stance here.

KyoAni needs to stop picking on Sunohara.

Yes, I know that he’s loud, goofy and arrogant. And I will concede that whatever Tomoyo does to him, he had it coming. However, Sunohara, in his own way, tries to do the right thing. He struggled to remember Fuko, and he’s fighting tenaciously to keep the Drama Club alive. And for his efforts, he’s the official Buttmonkey of the series.

Someone needs to throw the poor guy a bone. I’m thinking Sunohara x Ryou.

  19. on 02 Feb 2008 at 9:55 amTotali

    FUUKO-SAM- wait….you’re not Fuuko, you’re Nanoha! Wait….wait again….

Man, how long did it take you to get that Suneohara weiner cap? That one is genius.

  20. on 02 Feb 2008 at 10:00 amSetsukyie

@W4: KyoAni needs to stop picking on Sunohara.

I agree that they are picking on Sunohara too much..
But it’s hard for me to imagine Sunohara being a ’serious’ character..
    It doesn’t suit him..much…

    Anyways, this episode is awesome..
The tsundere Kyou made my day.. ^_^

Shirukii, shit. 19 comments in and you have yet to reply to any of them. This means that your blog has become insanely popular and that you’re being forcibly removed from the community by your popularity. In other words, you are becoming Jason Miao MkII.

I feel sorry for you, man. I really do. The moment you make a post with the acronym YTAMR in it, I will do you a favor and hunt you down and kill you.

Everything will be better for it.

@ Michael: And enjoyed every second of it.

@ Pyrrhusonline: I’m already having trouble dealing with 10% Horo, god help me if they give Kyou a perma-tail. The reason I love Kyou so much is because she’s the most sane out of the group and is the only one aside from Tomoyo that doesn’t fall under the “retard moe” category.

@ rozen12321: I’d watch it, as long as they keep Kyou in thigh highs :3

@ Servbot: Given that Tomoyo suspended Sunohara midair for a good while, I’d think fitting a hot dog in his nose would be cake for her.

@ Kari: A sad truth. But really, to cover everything and their after stories would take like…2 years. Which is why I’m reading the VN instead.

@ proxyman: Haha, finally a Tomoyo fan comments, I figured there would be more of you guys since she’s running second in the poll.

All Kyou seems to be able to do is shoot though, dunno how well she’d stand up against Hiromi in a full court game.

    @ kenshin514: Uguu~ shocku.

I think the game would have been better without the whole Tomoya angst scene altogether, but it is the turning point in the show, and even the VN.

    Show ▼

As for Nagisa’s arc, if you look at in on a grand scale, it hasn’t even began yet. They don’t have enough time to fully cover it anymore, so I think we’ll get a watered down version. It’ll probably still cause girly tears all around.

As for Ryou, I want to like her more, but she just doesn’t do anything!

@ Kanon_fan82: Sunohara, greatest gag character ever.

And don’t worry, the movement was subtle, but things are progressing. If you read my spoiler above, you’ll understand why, and why I said that we’re heading towards Nagisa end.

I haven’t watched Shigofumi 4 yet, I did watch 3, which wasn’t as awesome as 1 & 2, but not bad by any stretch.

@ albemuth: That thing looks kinda creepy.

@ ItAintEazy: Gotta love Key’s flawless logic huh? And I forgot that Yukari also voiced Rika, interesting. Nipah~

@ Siva: I usually reserve that statement for side characters who don’t get much time. Nagisa gets plenty of love in Clannad, so it’s implied that she is “fine too” =P

@ albert_2mb: One and the same? Perhaps?

@ Roy Mustang: Oh no you le didn’t. Kyou is all woman!

Hey you’re right…that actually would have been a sensible time to bring Fuko in for a cameo. Doriboru, shooto!

@ solgae: I guess it’s because they don’t have time to cover all the minor characters with as much depth as they would like.

I find it hilarious how calmly and rationally Tomoyo deals with her inner conflicts.

@ W4: I think it’s implied how good of a guy he is. If you notice in this episode, Tomoya was impressed with how formal and mature Sunohara was when he thanked Nagisa for giving Mei a place to say. He’s largely a gag character used for slapstick humor, but anyone who looks past that can see that he is a sincere guy.

@ Totali: Still quite the Fuko fanboy I see =P Amazing loyalty.

The weiner cap was actually a pain to get, I had to scroll through frame by frame, worth it though!

@ Setsukyie: Pretty much, yea. Almost all of Key’s supporting make characters are goofoffs anyways, so it was to be expected.

@ lolikit: You’re telling me ;_; it’s taken 15 minutes so far to reply to all these comments.

You dont have to hide it from us anymore Shirukii, we know whats going on behind the scenes. Ive always wondered why links had a barely audible money chime and then I found this anonymous testimonial:

“every morning I click on all the links within Anime Blog ga Arimasu which secretly gives Shirukii $1 per click”

I also found this on wikipedia:

“Shirukii now resides in Dubai sharing oil, land and small talk with sheikhs. In his spare time he can be found signing autographs and pointing and laughing at lolikit’s latest response for 15minutes before replying to comments.”

Cant make this stuff up, it would be a waste of everyone’s time if it was.

Shit, they’re on to me, time to relocate.

That reminds me, I never did explain the reason behind the ads did I, huh.

I’m not sure how many people noticed, but about a month ago the blog was loading really slowly, or sometimes not at all. The ab.net server I was on was buckling under the traffic. So Maestro e-mailed me and offered to switch me to a dedicated server, the only catch is that he would put ads in, all the revenue generated from them goes to hosting costs for ab.net.

So thanks for the sentiments W4 =P but, I’m not personally profiting from them. Though, feel free to continue, the money is going to a good cause.

@ lolikit: Does that mean he engineers his posts to cater to a certain demographic of readers? That’s kinda lame.

Please don’t wiki me ;_; Oh wait, scratch that, I’ve already been referenced before in wikipedia. If you were to find out which article it was in, you’d probably explode in rage, track me down and beat me to death with my keyboard.

“In an overall positive review on the anime by “Shirukii”, the review said, “All in all, an excellent anime, a definite recommendation to ANYONE, yuri fans or otherwise. However, if you are a yuri or shoujo ai fan, you may find the lack of actual yuri scenes disappointing. There’s some groping, kissing and occasional nude embrace, but (with a few exceptions) these scenes are mostly static and probably not what you have in mind”

Good stuff :)……I just haven’t had the patience to sit through enough eps. of Strawberry Panic to really get into it…..a definite watcher over the summer though when I have nothing else better to do :P

@ Kanon_fan82: Actually, I no longer agree with my review of Strawberry Panic. It was one of my first yuri anime so I was all “HOLY CRAP LESBIANS, THIS IS AWESOME” but after a while I realized it was rather mediocre, not worthy of the glowing recommendation I gave it at the time.

@ Siva: This is the internets, ya learn something new everyday.

@ lolikit: Nah, Strawberry Panic, and I praised it far beyond its worth.

Also, Shirukii, I thought I knew you.

Ehhhh? You don’t love Yuri Panic anymore??? Now I don’t know who or what to believe!

I’ll admit that the series was mostly a slow slog through a collection of sychopanthic airheads, but when it gets good, it REALLy gets good. Almost makes up for the filler-like episodes beforehand. Almost.

But betrayal is still betrayal, and with it comes another thorazine drip, or at the very least an application to law school.

It might not seem like it makes much sense, but they weren’t really challenging the Choir club directly. It was more like Sunohara thinking “Lol if we can beat the basketball club with a handicap like ours the Choir club will see that you can do things even with an injury or handicap, and they will be so moved as to give up on making the Choir Club!”

Tomoya thought at first it was kind of stupid to try it since even if they won there was no reason for the Choir club to give up on anything. Heh he gave in and played anyway though.
