Rosario + Vampire, at a glance
January 7th, 2008 by Shirukii

Rosario + Vampire, unlike a certain chemically named show, did in fact rock my soul. It’s only been one episode and I can already sense the awesomeness that this series will emanate for the remainder of its duration. The plot is lighthearted and fun while showing the promise of serious drama as Moka struggles with befriending a human, beings which she had taught herself to hate, while Tsukune struggles with coming to terms with the monster world and his first love being a death dealing vampire. It also helps that the show looks to be taking itself seriously, so there’s absolutely no “fanservice for the sake of fanservice”, nope, absolutely none.

Riiiiiight…
16 pantsu shots, six-fucking-teen, and that’s me being conservative and NOT counting the ones that doubled up in the same camera cut, if you take those into consideration the total shoots up to something like 20. All I can say is, WTF GONZO?!
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with pantsu shots or fanservice in general WHEN USED IN MODERATION. With a pantsu shot count of 20 and an episode that lasts just about that many minutes, we’re getting an average of a pantsu shot every minute, the whole damn episode was essentially one huge pantsu shot. Adding in some blatant scenes like Moka’s “look at my boobs rosario” and the oddly placed tentacle rape bukkake scene there was little if any real substance.
I didn’t completely bs my opening paragraph though, I do see the potential for a great story concerning the things I mentioned, namely, Moka and Tsukune’s struggles to accept their identities and still get along. Also, taking into account that it was explicitly stated that humans who entered the barrier would die and Tsukune clearly didn’t, perhaps he’s not a normal human after all, not to mention that I know very few high school kids who could get thrown into a pop machine that hard and get up seconds later. So there is the chance that Rosario + Vampire may become a good series, plot wise, after all.
However, that being said, Gonzo is royally screwing themselves over right now. They need to pick one of two routes, either they say to hell with the plot and focus solely on making this one huge fanservice anime, at which point it will become my guilty pleasure, replacing Goshuusou-sama Ninomiya-kun -OR- they moderate the fanservice and start on building a sensible plot, faithful to the supposedly far superior manga. Trying to do both will ruin the show.
Technicals were meh, which is to be expected of this type of show. I like the character designs, especially Moka’s vampire form, which for some reason reminds me of Natsume Maya from Tenjho Tenge. The animation was pretty lame though, the “fight scenes” being choppy and lacking in intermediate frames, especially Moka’s kick, which was so point blank I couldn’t tell what happened until they zoomed away from her panties.
Music was a non-factor, as is the norm with me. I didn’t make it past 10 seconds of the ED before I lost interest and there wasn’t an OP this time around. Background music was also pretty generic and uninspiring.
All in all, I won’t say it was an absolute failure of a start for Rosario + Vampire, but it certainly did leave much to be desired, as could be said for the winter season in general thus far. God I can’t wait for Minami-ke, ARIA and Gunslinger Girl to be subbed.

shirukii, i used to respect you. then i read your opening paragraph, and all that respect vanished.
and then i got past your screenshots, and i fell in love in all over again.
please forgive me for taking you seriously…
it was a massive failure on my part,
and i apologize.
that aside you’re completely fucking wrong, this show has NO REDEEMING value. and pantsu shots are NEVER OKAY. they’re excessive and pointless and NEVER HELP ANYTHING unless it’s a hentai and they’re trying to show that OMG HER PANTIES ARE WET??!?!?!?!?!!!? (or, the less used and just as shocking, OMG SHE’S ACTUALLY WEARING PANTIES WHY DOES SHE BOTHER?!!??!?!!).
ok i’m done, and hopefully you’re done with this show. remember, the theater and the origination. they are the only two shows worth squat this season (though it should be mention that they’re probably good enough to make up for all the crap).
shit, my english failed hard.
*they are the only two shows worth squat this season (though it should be mentioned that they’re probably good enough to make up for all the crap).
I believe Gonzo portrayed the scenes accurately. *cough*
What else would you get if you were filming a girl wearing a very short skirt running around?
When wind blows, skirts fly up… simple physics. O_O
Welp, it helps that you spoiled the rest of the season for us (Tsukune realizes he is actually a monster: the end.) which takes away at least one reason to watch this Gonzo-riffic show. And we all know when your name becomes either an adjective or a verb, it’s never a good thing.
So H2O’s opening was less than stellar, and R+V’s opening was less than stellar.
Say… here’s a crazy thought. Let’s splice the two shows together.
Our protagonist is Takuma, a blind boy with a warm and gentle demeanor, heads to his new school. This school claims to cater to “special students.” The bad news: it’s a school for monsters. The good news: he meets some friendly monsters immediately. These include:
* Moka, our current favorite dual-personality vampire (after all, Morrigan is so 16-bit).
* An honor-clad werewolf who volunteers his services as a seeing eye dog.
* A mysterious upperclassman who hears voices. For the meta tweak, she keeps hearing voices from characters in other anime.
Most of the monsters view Takuma with a predatory eye; human or no, he’s labeled as easy pickings due to his sightlessness. But those who feel otherwise are soon impressed and touched by his loyalty and bravery in the most trying of situations.
Played mostly for laughs with liberal doses of WAFF. And, no, Takuma doesn’t magically get to see, nor are his eyes a host for some ancient, unspeakable evil.
What do you think, sirs and ma’ams?

I read the manga, too many panty shots in the anime, but it looks good, BLOG IT PL0X >:O
“nor are his eyes a host for some ancient, unspeakable evil.”
Aaaw….
Time for a Cthulhu reference in anime? I think so!
But ick, pantsu shots -_- Everytime I see one of those, I’m reminded of my parents being confident that it’s all hentai… ;_;
i’m giving this until ep3, if its still crap i’ll stick to the manga. So disappointed…
(least) Favorite scene from this show.
Character says: “She has a huge demonic aura.”
Camera shows: Tight close-up of Moka’s hips.
Also, lulz on furry-sensei being named “Nekomimi” (well, almost)
@ lolikit: I’m just glad you decided to keep reading past the screenshots. And meh, I can find potential in almost anything. I like to keep a faint glimmer of hope, just in case a series doesn’t completely fail. Though it likely will in this case…
@ Servbot: They could have made her skirt a little longer? Iono. I don’t think the fanservice was this explicit in the manga.
@ ItAintEazy: Well…that’s lame, I didn’t think the conclusion would be that predictable. I doubt I’ll keep watching now =\
@ W4: Go pitch this to Gonzo, nao. It’s infinitely better than what I see this becoming.
@ Michael: Nevar! My writing skills shall be used for superior shows like ARIA, where I will be putting myself to the test by blogging about a show where essentially nothing happens!
@ Vadigor: Your parents and the vast majority of the general populous, yea. But we know better, and that’s all that matters.
@ PassinGass: If you’re reading the manga I don’t see any reason why you would put yourself through the conparatively crappier anime. I would read it, but I’m too lazy and already have too much of a manga backlog =(
@ Telliamed: Has neko in her name, same deal. She’s also pretty ditzy, I don’t like her.
>>where I will be putting myself to the test
Only one word ever needs to be mentioned in a post about Aria: suteki.
You guys are taking it was too seriously when it is not suposed to be..it’s fun and I like it :-)
My, my…
You guys are soo superficial…
All you see is panties, what does that say about you? :P
You should look beyond the panties and find the hidden meaning!
I love this show ^_^
Yes there IS lots of fan-service but I like fan-service! sometimes too much ecchi content can detract from a good story but in this case I think it’s quite stylishly done. It’s romantic and funny and I’m looking forward to the second season (now confirmed – or at least semi-confirmed).
I watch the show on Veoh but if I could afford it I would buy it on DVD; unfortunately that’s a very expensive option in the UK and I wish there was some other way to contribute money to the producers of the show to support it.
hi..!! add me in msn.. chanchangtung@hotmail.com
acctualy.. i wana watch r+v.. soo.. do they hv season 2?? pls reply me in msn..
I love this show, its has good animation and story.
wow!!!
this cartoon is very great and exciting i dont know how to express me about it
but the only thing taht i know is that it is very very exciting
for the record on the topic of Rosario+Vampire….the manga was just as bad..no wait, it actually got a little worse..
And as for the plot, its actually really good, you just have to..bear with it a little but…though the plot seems to be different to an extent, its there and slowly deepens with a lot of serious tones, like the idea of humanity in general
Fanservice is out there, but if you bear with it, theres a good plot, good characters and good development
thats all i gotta say

I read the manga then watched the anime. I loved both. I noticed that some things were different in the anime as is the case with all manga to anime conversions. But the thing is, its an anime with a deep underlying tone about things, that can be strangely philosophically viewed. If you can get past panty shots. The Anime is amazing. I happen to think though the panty shots are tastefully done. And the fights get hella good later through the series as well as the manga. The story line gets very complex as well. This is definantly a series to watch. I’ve read every chapter of the second season manga coming out thus far as soon as it comes out. I’m sorry Shirukii but in this anime. Your dead wrong in my opinion. This is an excellent story well portrayed and well thought out.
Niggaz i be lovein this show so don’t be dissin or i;ll but a cap in your ass with my gat like ratta tat tat! Moka is Hot
hablen en español piches gringos puñeteros
esta my pavito
Yeah…imo the manga was so much better. It may be pretty heavy on pantyshot too, but at least the plot felt somewhat interesting. It’s much darker than the anime and the characters and the whole conspiracy within the school is looked at more in-depth. Overall, i think watching the anime would ruin the standard that the manga set for me (which was, surprising to some of you no doubt, extremely good).
Alright, first of all yes you bring up a good point. But then again, you miss understood the entire intention of the anime in the first place.
1) Only someone with extremely anal views of the world would even bother writing something about cartoon girls and their underwear. Thats like complaining that Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t wear pants. Seriously.
2) It’s all in good fun, and besides the fan service it’s just supposed to be a reoccurring thing with in the show that is supposed to represent how childish even adults and teenagers can be.
3) You can take into careful consideration that this is in fact a little closer to reality then most other anime. Think about it, if girls were actually dressing up and jumping about like this, we’d see their panties a lot too. The way I see it, the creator was simply being accurate unlike some of those guys/girls who in their anime and manga have a girl hanging off a cliff with wind blowing, yet their skirt never leaves their asses.
I for one am all for anime that gets rid of some of those stupid “OMG! If I keep it at this angle, I need to use some weird physics plan to hide thier underwear!” rules. Doing that is simply someones way of censoring something that really doesn’t need to be censored. As long as the proper warnings are given before the show starts, just sit back and enjoy the anime.
People with problems like this are the reason that by the time anime gets to America and Canada; and I’m going o use Dragonball Z as an example, the plot and storyline is twisted around so much that you can hardly call it a work from the creator. In Dragonball Z, the american version, a guy can have a hole blasted in his chest and he’ll never cough up blood or bleed well he’s on the ground. This coming from a nation that gives everyone the right to carry a gun… ironic.
The japnese version, you might as well just make the Saw movies into a fucking cartoon.
Catch my drift? Seriously guys, underwear never hurt anyone, especially cartoon underwear.
