Candy Boy OVA

Twincest ftw

This little OVA went largely unnoticed after its release, I blame its stupid title, as that was the reason I skipped over it. But luckily my good friends at SHiN-gx fansubs were not put off by the naming and decided to sub it. I never widely announced it before, but I’ve been helping the SHiN-gx team as a freelance TL/QCer, and while I was initially unenthusiastic about working on Candy Boy, the delicious yuri reward was well worth the effort.

The OVA revolves around Yukino and Kanade Sakurai, sisters with perhaps something more than a normal sibling relationship. However, it seems that their feelings for each other were never made explicit and so trouble arises when a freshman, Sakuya Kamiyama enters their dorm and seems to have a thing for Yuki. As a result, Kana backs off from her sister when Sakuya is around. The two drift further and further apart, even starting to sleep in separate beds, despite having not done so since they were kids.

The two bottle up their feelings for each other until one day Yuki can’t take it anymore and confesses her love to Kana, who tells Yuki she feels the same, but asks about Sakuya. It turns out that Sakuya and Yuki weren’t dating at all, in fact, Sakuya is in love with Kana, not Yuki, the reason she approached Yuki was to help her get close to Kana. They both breathe a sigh of relief when they realize that everything was a big misunderstanding, but Kana wonders why Yuki agreed to help Sakuya…

Yuki never thought that Kana would leave her for someone else, so she agreed to help Sakuya, but more importantly, she was offered snacks as a bribe. Lamenting the fact that she now has Sakuya stalking her every move, Kana grips the hand of her sister turned lover and swears she’ll never let go.

Thoughts

Short, sweet and to the point, just like any OVA should be. While I enjoyed this OVA a lot, it definitely should have been a little longer. The audience isn’t really given any hint that Sakuya may have had the hots for Kana instead of Yuki, and that’s a fatal flaw in the story. The short clip they showed of the two sisters drifting apart would have had a much better impact had the audience known beforehand that it was all the result of a misunderstanding. If my faint memories of high school literature serve me correct, it’s a literary technique called dramatic irony where the audience knows a crucial piece of information that the characters don’t, building suspense and tension as we watch them struggle against circumstance.

However, as much as I would like to see more of this series, I don’t know if it would be such a good idea. The foundations of the story are pretty shallow and if it were to extend past OVA status, say, into a 12 episode series, it would probably feel really drawn out. There’s only so much time you could spend watching Yuki and Kana angsting before getting fed up. Combined with the fact that the animation quality would have gone to hell if it were turned full length, not so appealing. So I’ll remain content with what we got, a lighthearted yuri romance with a bit of dramatic conflict, albeit a little shortcut.

Also, sorry if there are errors in the script, my Japanese is getting better, but is still weak. Hopefully the other TL caught anything I screwed up.

I wish I had a loli stalker

I’ve been dying for a publisher to throw money at these people since I saw the earlier FB release. They were able to put 10x as much plot into 6 minutes than some producers do with 300. I’ve always felt that the sloppiness and filler of most anime is a result of poor planning and bad writing. Giving them a budget and time to work out a complete story would take away the concerns you mentioned.

Well if they’re your friends, Silky, I’ll download the file.

A great little show. As Telliamed said: “…They were able to put 10x as much plot into 6 minutes than some producers do with 300….” I can’t see expanding this. It is what it is, and what it is for me is one of the ten best shows of the year.

And Nabatame Hitomi and Yuzuki Ryoka deserve mention for their great seiyuu work. One more note: the “stalker” was voiced by Katou Emiri, who was Kagami in Lucky Star.

@ Telliamed: Yea, I love the no frills concept of OVAs, it’s a shame though, they tend to be so good that you want to see more.

@ lolikit: Your ability to come up with new nicknames for me is astonishing.

And yes, yes they are sisters.

@ hashihime: Too bad we didn’t get to hear more of the little stalker then, Kagami and Miaso’s voices in LS were one of its saving graces.

@ Xacur: I’ve been aware of that problem and still haven’t been able to fix it, it’s really frustrating. It may have something to do with the way rss readers fetch images.

Candy Boy was an excellent quick-watch, Yukino and Kanade were quite likable characters right from the beginning of the OVA with their “I want your Breast/Tits for my Christmas Present” dialouge. The drama wasn’t intense but it was still good, my only complaint would be the lack of a “kiss” scene.

What, no rating? Oh well, it’s probably a 10/10 since you took whatever is left of your precious time in translating it, definitely a watch.

Ummm…actually wasn’t the point of this scene to mislead the viewers? It’s pretty common and it’s used for the “element of surprise.”

I thought that part was well executed as a red herring.
