Myself; Yourself 12

Nanaka sees you fapping
Considering the numerous plotlines that Myself; Yourself opened through the course of the season, I’d say they’ve done a pretty good job so far, making sure they address them all. Sure the Kaji scenario didn’t play out nearly as dramatically as it could have, but it was still a satisfactory ending, and it served as a nice buffer for Hoshino’s borderline psychotic lesbianism. With one episode left and only Nanaka’s story to patch up, finally explaining what happened with Sana and the deal with his watch, and perhaps a little aside on the twins, looks like all the loose ends will be tied off quite neatly. Good stuff.
Episode Rating: 7.5/10

With the sudden disappearance of two of their best friends, Sana, Nanaka and Aoi are understandably saddened, even more so since it hasn’t been that long since Sana came back and the group really reunited. To make things worse, rumors of the twins’ disappearance continue to spread, most of the students buying into Hoshino’s fake story about them going to a love hotel together and eventually eloping to escape their parents.

That afternoon, on the way to the convenience store, Sana gets a package from Shuu, unfortunately with no return address nor a phone number. At the convenience store he buys a bento and ends up winning a free drink from their promotional raffle. On his way home he sees Yuzuki sensei sitting alone at the park near his apartment, noticing she looks a bit down Sana goes to see what’s up. Seems like they’re not the only ones worrying about Shuu and Shuri, Yuzuki-sensei saying that she tries her best to get to know her students and support them, but in the end they didn’t come seeking help from her. But she doesn’t blame them, they probably knew that she couldn’t have done much to help in their situation anyways, but she at least wanted to offer them some encouragement. Having been cheered up numerous times in the past by Yuzuki-sensei, Sana repays the favor, offering her the drink he won earlier as a reward for having such good intentions.

The package from Shuu ends up being a fishing rod, one that Shuu worked to save up to buy. Wanting to put it to good use, Sana invites Nanaka and Aoi to Kotsuchi river over the weekend. But when Sunday comes around, he gets a phone call from Aoi saying that she caught a bit of a cold and won’t be able to make it. But really Aoi is just faking it, having noticed that Shuu and Shuri’s disappearance has really taken a toll on Nanaka, and knowing that it’s Sana who can cheer her up the best, she stands down and let the two have some alone time together.

Taking a while to set up the lure, Sana eventually manages to hack the thing together and put Shuu’s fishing rod to use, but despite it being a great rod, Sana’s fishing skills are as terrible as ever and ultimately he comes up blank. Luckily, Aoi called Nanaka the night before and let her know she might not be able to make it, suggesting that she cook for two in case Sana isn’t able to catch anything. Annoyed with their lack of trust, but happy to have a backup, Sana, slightly hesitantly, eats Nanaka’s odd bento combination of slightly burnt eggs and cookies, apparently the only two things she can make.

After spending some time after lunch lounging around the river, Sana tells Nanaka he has something to show her in the mountains (RAEP!). After a lengthy hike through the forest the two reach their destination, narrowly avoiding getting drenched in a sudden rainstorm. At the end of the dark cave lies the thing that Sana wanted to show Nanaka, a large cavern whose roof has essentially become a huge geode resembling a starry sky.
The effect doesn’t last very long though, as Sana’s flashlight battery runs out and the two are forced to sit tight until the rain stops and the sun comes up so they can make their way back down the mountain. Taking advantage of their time alone, Nanaka asks Sana the story behind his wristwatch and if it really was a gift from his girlfriend or something. Sana assures her it’s nothing like that, but doesn’t actually tell her anything more about it. He changes topics by asking her why she put the letters she wrote to him in the mailbox instead of sending them directly to him, as she should have done if she was really in that much pain. Nanaka tells him that she was surprised how much she changed after the fire and was scared that Sana might have changed too, and she thought that by putting the letters in that mailbox she’d be able to reach the Sana she knew as a child. But in the end she’s happy that Sana hasn’t changed much at all, that he’s still the Sana she’s always known, the Sana that she loves.

The two doze off in the cave, Sana waking up before Nanaka and heading outside. When Nanaka wakes up and makes her way to the entrance of the cave, the orange/reddish glow from the sunset pours into the cave, resembling the color of fire, Nanaka has another one of her panic attacks and blindly walks outside, falling down the slight incline of the cave, luckily into Sana’s arms, who is there to catch her. But it’s apparent that something is wrong, Sana notices Nanaka is shaking, and when he asks her what happened, she tells him that she remembers everything, everything from the night of the fire. Seems like the memories aren’t very pleasant, as she lets out a scream, Sana trying desperately to calm her down.
Thoughts
Sooo…am I the only one who thinks Sana’s an idiot? Despite having said something as embarrassing as “I’ll stay with you forever from now on” on the ferris wheel, when Nanaka pretty much confesses to him, he does nothing? The hell? I thought for sure that they would kiss or at least hug, probably followed by copious amounts of blushing, but something! Nope, instead he just sits there in silence.
And that was some pretty cowardly dodging of Nanaka’s question. She’s feeling uneasy about the story behind his wristwatch and Shuu’s suggestion that it may be from a previous girlfriend yet instead of fully explaining things to her he continues to weakly deny it, leaving it open for question. And what’s more, not only does he completely deflect her question, he comes back and asks her a personal question of his own. A pretty one sided relationship they’ve got going on if you ask me.
And another thing that really surprised me this episode was how Sana just ignored the girls talking crap about Shuu and Shuri. He knows the rumors of them going to a love hotel and engaging in sweet twincest loving are completely unbased, yet he ignores it and walks by silently. What happened to his bold declaration that no matter where they are they’ll always be friends, last time I checked, friends stick up for each other when people talk behind their backs.

Anyways, enough Sana ranting, this episode was still awesome due to the concentrated Nanaka screentime. Dere dere Nanaka is love, she deserves better than Sana D= Next episode will probably be a combo flashback/revelation as to what really happened the night of the fire, which means, equally, or perhaps more importantly than the actual plot development, we get to see loli Nanaka again next episode! Judging from her reaction to her returned memories things couldn’t have gone very well that night, and seeing as anything else would take too long to explain, I’m betting that it was her uncle who torched the house.

Aaaand I just went back to check out the preview. Yep, definitely the uncle. This week’s preview gave away a little more than it should have, it showed present day Nanaka escaping from her burning house, clutching her violin. Which probably means that her uncle found out Nanaka’s memories came back and had the brilliant idea to try and burn her…because, you know, that isn’t obvious at all…damn pyromaniac.
EDIT My mistake! That was the flashback scene in the preview, as you can see, Nanaka’s room is upstairs in the scene, whereas if you go back a couple episodes you’ll notice her current room is on a ground floor. But hey, it would be funny to see her uncle try it again anyways XD
So it looks like things will come full circle, Nanaka’s uncle won’t be able to deny arson again, so he’ll probably get locked up. Nanaka will go all panicky and this time Sana will be there for her to comfort her, etc etc. Happy ending. But again, Myself; Yourself has thrown some really WTF curveballs in the past, so you never know, they might just go with something completely unexpected instead. Guess we’ll find out next week.
Aside: Has anyone noticed the blog has been running a little slow at times lately? Sometimes taking up to a couple minutes to load. It only happens every so often, but it’s really annoying when it does, I can’t even get to the admin dashboard or connect to the ftp to see what’s going on. I sent an e-mail to Maestro asking to see if there’s anything wrong on his end, hopefully it goes away on its own.

Was it present-day Nanaka in the preview? I’m not seeing the resemblance yet, although the theory you mentioned does sound like it could be plausible.
As always, it IS Myself;Yourself so I’m calling all bets off in the final episode; this one felt rather predictable, but I’m flagging it as a ‘calm before the storm’. And with them wrapping up Sana and Nanaka’s predictable-looking (you can guess the emphasis there) backstory in 25 minutes, it’s either going to be a category 5 or it’s going to nose dive hard.
I’m worried, personally. I’m not seeing how they can extract enough time from it, but I’ll hope they can…
(Also, three cheers for Aoi doing something vaguely important to the story without getting a ridiculous plotline!)
I agree that Sana is a bit of a dim bulb, but he’s leaps and bounds better than Makoto Itou and does not deserve the BAD END he’ll probably get next week. I say that for no other reason than this: his aversion to blood is a metaphorical “dueling pistols on the mantlepiece.” It’d be silly to introduce such a phobia and then do nothing with it. Episode 13 will have blood; I guarantee it.
Well, Personally, I think the one in the preview was the younger Nanaka, not the present day one.especially since directly after that scene there’s a shot of the present day Nanaka and there’s definetely a difference in heights. In anycase, looks like things are about to get a whole lot more interesting from now on.
On a side note, will the twins ever show up again?
Nanaka is love.
What? That’s it? This doesn’t even qualify as filler. Whatever development happened between Sana and Nanaka was seems already to be covered three episodes ago. Aoi’s character development was pretty much nonexistant, aaaaand. . . that’s pretty much it for the episode. That’s 22 minutes I’ll never get back.

I love this show, but I couldn’t have said it better myself lol…Although I’m not anti-Nanaka in any way, this episode did NOTHING……..oh well…….bring on the blood! :D
It’s finally time to know the Sana secret, maybe a bit too late with the last episode dedicated to Nanaka again.
Shirukii: WTH, how are they suppose to wrap everything up in the next episode? I expected the last two episodes would be very dramatic, but it didn’t turn out to be that way at all. Don’t you think it would be better if they didn’t do any of Hinako’s episodes in the beginning, so they could have more time and not have rushing ending. I agree with you. Sana, in this episodes, is a little punk.
I don’t know about you, Shirukii. From the preview, I felt like we’re gonna have a satisfied ending. I hope I’m wrong.
Oh well, another series one final episode ends everything. I thought it should be better than that but it was still good anyway.
@ItAintEazy: It was 25:29 minutes of my precious time.
Aside: Yes it does run slow.
@ CCY: Oshi- you’re right, I think that was flashback Nanaka. Not so much from the height or anything, but Nanaka lives in the temple thing now, it’s a one story house, whereas in the preview we see her room is clearly on the second floor. My mistake!
@ W4: lol, you think so? Who do you have in mind for perpetrator and victim. I’ll admit that there are some pretty rough emotions floating around, but I don’t quite see anyone brandishing pointy objects.
@ Alias: Yea, sorry about that, it is flashback Nanaka. And I’m guessing we’ll see some sort of mini-epilogue for Shuu and Shuri, just to tie things up.
@ SHiN_aKuMa: Yea, the blog has a few issues here and there, I don’t know what’s causing them yet though. I fixed your comments.
Oh, and REALLY sorry about not getting you the script yesterday, this final exam is proving to be a little more time consuming than I thought. If I don’t pass out from exhaustion tomorrow, you’ll get it by then.
@ ItAintEazy: Haha, come on, it wasn’t that bad =P
It’s not the most thrilling development, but it wasn’t all that bad, we finally get to see their relationship somewhat solidifying, even if Sana is being a moron about it.
@ Kanon_fan82: I’m really not seeing how this will have a bloody ending lol, am I missing something?
@ Shipon: They’ll work it in somehow, it’ll probably be really rushed and convoluted, but it’ll fit.
@ kenshin514: I feel that they’ll be able to wrap it up fairly well. Of course it’s going to be a little rushed, but given M;Y’s track record of pulling some really crazy shit in the past, I think they’ll pull it off.
@Shirukii: I begrudgingly admit that the odds are against many forms of bad ending. And the more I think about it, the more likely it may be that they just ignore Sana’s hemophobia and wristwatch in the finale.
The only reason I have to think that there’s going to be some form of bad ending is “The Dueling Pistols on The Mantlepiece.” It’s an old literaly rule that states: “If the author introduces a pair of dueling pistols over a mantlepiece in act 1 of a play, there will be a duel with said pistols in act 3.” Simply put, good storytellers don’t just throw in quirks/oddities/etc. without doing something with them.
But then I remember that that’s *exactly* what the writers of “Spiral” did with the Blade Children. With what they did with *that* series, they could have called them “Barney Foo-Foos” without affecting the plot since they never explained *what Blade Children were*.
…but back to “Myself ; Yourself.”
Not doing anything with Sana’s hemophobia and wristwatch would be like doing nothing with Kaji after episode 5 or saying after episode 1, “Nanaka’s a ***ch now. So enough about her. Let’s focus on Shuuri and Hinako. Wheeeeee!” And considering that this series has made attempts to finish what it has started, I’ve the feeling that they’re going to do *something* with both Nanaka’s and Sana’s unresolved mysteries.
I doubt it. I mean, the guy who wrote this also wrote ever17, which, by my point of view, has one of the most cocked up, complicated and filled with WTF and plothole and STILL making sense. I seriously doubt someone who wrote such a complicated plotline would introduce such an element just for kicks, especially after he freaked out in episode 10 for everyone to see. Still, I can’t belive that I missed out on that until the fishing episode…Must be getting old.
Speaking of which, Myself yourself 11 was pretty much the “BEST EPISODE EVAR!!!!” in this series. If only there was a chance to dicuss it…..
@ Shirukii:
I don’t think it will be a bloody ending…..I just wanna know what the deal with Sana is lol :P….and possibly see him go a little crazy :)…just for a total WTF kind of moment :)
AHH I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO SANA, WTFZ0RS
@kanon_fan: You’re right, what made it worse is that I LOOOVE Nanaka, and I think she’s been shafted in terms of screentime. Whoever made her go through that episode should get the twin hills treatment
@Siva: Well, I dunno about you, but I skipped through the intro, the outro, the preview, and the fishing trip retread, but it was still precious time wasted.
@Shirukii: Shit, the next episode better be Nice Boat X 3 or else I cause another Nice Boat myself.
Okay I won’t go that far, but as far as I can tell, I see an ending similar to a Dragnet episode where each character forward profile being shown with a monotone voice telling us what happened to them. That’s the only way I can think it could wrap up all the loose ends.
A little hard on Sana this week, aren’t we? xD I was a little surprise by the lack of response to Nanaka’s declaration of love, but the only way I see it is that Sana thinks she said she loves him as a friend, not something more… And his silence was saying he felt the same =/ Weak, but that’s all I got xDD
And I wasn’t surprised Sana didn’t approach those girls who were talking about Shuu and Shuri. I was under the impression that he was doing it for what’s-her-face. The lesbian xD God, forgot her name as soon as she outs herself as a lesbo. In any case, if he went and told them the truth, she would be in trouble, and it’d only stir more talk about Shuri.
I can’t see this series ending with all loose ends tied up properly. Rushed, maybe, but not properly. Nanaka looks like she’s at center stage next episode, and where that would leave Sana’s story is beyond me. To leave the main character’s story until the last five minutes is utterly stupid.
damnit sana you blockhead!
Next episode has alot of explaining to do, but with this anime’s track record i have a feeling ill only learn half of wat i want to kno. The story behind sana’s wrist watch better be good, or im going to eat my monitor!!!
