Clannad 05
November 2nd, 2007 by Shirukii

Fight-O!
Haha, oh wow. With each passing week I’m becoming more and more convinced that Clannad would do much better to stay as a comedy show. The jokes are well timed and Tomoya adds a perverted flare to them that makes them even more hilarious.
But that having been said, it looks like we’re finally heading into the first serious business arc, Fuko’s. It’s coming off a little too Kanon-ish to me, but that’s not entirely a bad thing, Fuko also has the whole over the top moe bordering on retardation thing going for her. *thumbs up*
Episode Rating: 9/10

With the suspicion that Fuko might be the rumored ghost of the girl who got into a car accident a few years ago, Tomoya and Nagisa try to straighten things out. The most obvious thing to do first is to bring Fuko to her sister to see if she really is who she claims to be. However, Fuko declines, saying she’d prefer to stay at school.
Tomoya and Nagisa head to Ibuki-sensei’s house where Tomoya recognizes her as the one who came to Nagisa’s bread shop a while back. Ibuki-sensei remembers him as well and wonders if he’s Nagisa’s boyfriend, a claim which is quickly denied by Nagisa, a striking blow to Tomoya’s pride. But when Ibuki-sensei’s questioning confirms that Tomoya doesn’t have any one else he likes, saying that Nagisa has a chance, she turns into a blushing mess.
Quickly changing topics, Nagisa congratulates Ibuki-sensei on her recent engagement, much to her surprise since the only person she’s told so far is her little sister, who is in a coma from the car accident years ago. Rather than confront Ibuki-sensei with the news of Fuko, they dodge the topic and cover it up by saying it was a rumor at school that just happened to be right. Ibuki-sensei then goes on to talk about how she’s not sure whether she wants to go through with the wedding, because she’s unsure whether it’s fair for her to live in happiness while her little sister is suffering.
Afterwards, Tomoya and Nagisa talk alone at a park by themselves, no more sure about who or what Fuko is than when they first set out. But Nagisa thinks that Fuko isn’t lying and decides that she wants to help her. With nothing else to do, the two of them decide to put the drama club issue on hold for a while and concentrate on helping Fuko.

First thing’s first, they need to get Fuko a place to stay other than the school. And given how lenient Nagisa’s parents are, they decide to give there a shot first. But since they know Ibuki-sensei, the plan is to have Fuko use a different last name to avoid the possibility of having Fuko’s identity exposed. The story they go with is that Fuko’s parents went on a vacation alone and she doesn’t have a place to stay. In all her genious, Fuko uses Nagisa’s neighbor’s last name as her cover, introducing herself as Isogai Fuko, but luckily Akio and Sanae accept it as coincidence.

That night, Tomoya heads over the Sunohara’s dorm only to see the rugby team being chased out by the landlord, Misae, for peeping on the girls. Tomoya says that they’re doing it just to get her attention, and if she roughs them up a bit, they’ll probably stop, he suggests an arm-lock. Sunohara shows up to greet Tomoya, who calls him a peeping tom, Misae puts Tomoya’s advice to immediate use, and puts Sunohara in a painful looking arm lock. Tomoya then tells Sunohara that the drama club deal is off for a while, as they have something else to take care of first.

The next morning, Tomoya heads to Nagisa’s house to pick up Fuko and Nagisa, only to find them with Akio and Sanae, carving out wooden stars. And when Tomoya comments on how nice they look, scattered out across the floor, almost like a starry sky, Fuko reveals the shocking truth, they’re not stars, they’re actually starfish, which is actually what Nagisa thought they were when she first saw them too.

That day at school is mostly devoted to handing out the star…fish. As the three of them walk around, Fuko starts to become attached to Nagisa, while proclaiming Tomoya as her arch nemesis. When Nagisa hugs Fuko, telling Tomoya not to pick on her, she goes into one of her trademark space outs, so Tomoya decides to play a trick on her. He spots Ryou and calls her over, he asks her to pretend to be him when Fuko snaps out of it, saying that once in a while ‘it’ falls off and he turns into a girl. Hilarity ensues.

When Tomoya walks up to them, Fuko is a little slow and thinks that there are now two Tomoyas. When Kyou suddenly enters the scene and starts scolding Tomoya for using her sis to play another practical joke, Fuko still hasn’t gotten it, and seeing Kyou makes her think that there are now three Tomoyas.
After all that is sorted out, Fuko takes the opportunity to give the Fujibayashis a starfish each, Ryou sees the carvings as a star, but Kyou jokingly suggests it could also be a starfish, Fuko is happy she noticed and inducts her into her Starfish Alliance.

The rest of the day is much of the same, the three of them handing out Fuko’s carving to students, asking them to celebrate Ibuki-sensei’s upcoming wedding. The secondary library’s keeper Yukine gladly accepts one, but when Fuko offers one to a girl she talked to briefly during the opening ceremony, Mitsui, she rejects it, saying that Fuko should consider how busy seniors are with exams.
That night, Tomoya and Nagisa try and cheer Fuko up, seeing her a little down after Mitsui’s rejection. Fuko tells them that she’s not sad that Mitsui declined, just that she’s a little disappointed that she never got to attend classes with everyone else in her grade.

So out of sheer boredom the goodness of their hearts, Tomoya, Kyou, Ryou, Nagisa, Sunohara, and Sanae as the teacher, create a makeshift classroom for Fuko at school, even electing her as class rep. Not the ideal way to spend his time off, but Tomoya is glad to see Fuko having fun, noting that she may be a little strange, but she seems like a perfectly normal human being…
Thoughts
I think KyoAni channeled all the funny that was supposed to have gone to LS into Clannad instead, it’s freaking hilarious. A lot of it has to do with how blunt most of the characters are, besides the obvious Tomoya and Sunohara, even random characters like Misae don’t hesitate for a second to toss a cat aside and execute a crucifix armlock.
And then there’s Ryou and Kyou. Ryou is a great character for comedic relief because she pretty much does exactly as she’s told without questioning, not protesting much even when told to pretend that she’s a guy who just turned into a girl and saying things like “It falls off every now and then”. Whether it be that she’s too naive to understand what she’s saying, or she knows but does it anyways, the end result is comedic gold. As for Kyou, I never get tired of her dynamic dictionary throwing entry and usually violent follow up, her overprotective nature when it comes to her sister and her natural propensity to resort to violence when dealing with Tomoya and Sunohara, combined with her awesome kick, still makes her my fav character by far.
But I must admit, Fuko is pretty win as well. She’s got a couple screws loose in her head, but she’s funny and cute nonetheless. I can’t wait to see Tomoya pull off squirting milk up her nose when she spaces out. And I loved how she made Ryou and Kyou pose with the starfish, just for the lulz. d(^.^)b
Plot wise, it’s nice to see that we’re finally getting some focus with Fuko’s arc, even though this pretty much means KyoAni will stick to their method of going through each girl one by one and ending with the OTP. But I guess it’s not a bad thing, it worked fairly well with Kanon.
I don’t have a prediction as to what will happen in Fuko’s arc, as these ghost/spirit deals always seem to have weird developments. The preview for next episode has Nagisa trying to get Fuko and Ibuki-sensei to meet up at a festival, which should be interesting. Though, it seems rather fast, Fuko’s arc seems like it just started, personally I take the second half of episode 3 as it’s starting point. Having the sisters meet will quickly rush things to a conclusion, so my guess is things will wrap up in about 1.5-2 episodes. But then again, you never know what’ll happen with these types of stories, remember how long Kanon spent on Makoto? (Auu~)

San-nen B-gumi? KUROI SENSEI!
Speaking of school, midterms are over! Sweet relief ;_;

Tomoya’s a tranny :D
Tomoya is Kyon funny. I loved the jokes in the episode. I also loved the whole ‘Mastered Switching’ thing. Tomoyo’s Hit Counter was getting old for me.
I don’t know where this arc is going, either, but I can’t wait ^^ Looks interesting.
Fuko is freaking CUTE >.
Uguuu!!!!!!!! i love Fuko..thought her story does seem very Ayu-ish nay?
Man, they really do like to circle around the Ryou is bi concept d(>___
Sweet zombie Jesus, moetards everywhere! Yeah, maybe Fu-chan (don’t call me that!) has an excuse since the coma probably killed off a few brain cells, but the rest of them. . .? I can honestly say the part of the episode I most enjoyed was when Tomoya slapped Fuko around for that “Isogai” business. I’m normally a peaceful guy, but there is only so much stupidity I can stand.
ugh……. i guess i cant type that arrow here……

I loved how they put on those tiny details like Nagisa’s embarassed reaction and especially Tomoya’s arsholic snickering (XD) face when he swapped back with Ryou and says nothing happened to Fuuko.
KA i say to thee, GJ d(+_+)b

Haha by far the funniest series so far.
It fell off.. It happens sometimes.
Does it come back. Sometimes!
lol to much win for me to handle.
Also fuu is cool in that uber spacey im not really in a comma across town kind of way that makes you want her to have a happy ending
I really think that this is going to end well .. Not sure how but i am looking forward to it
I thought when the series get into the each of heroine’s arc, the story will be less funny. I glad that I was wrong. Thanks to Fuuko. She’s pretty damn funny. She definitely gets a lot of brownie points from me in this episode. However, Kyou is still my favorite heroine in clannad.
Many people say that Fuuko is similar to Ayu. Well, I have to agree only in certain area like how they are pretty dense when it comes to common sense and they are ghost/spirit/soul or whatever due to their accident. However, Ayu always says “Ugruu” like every second while Fuuko doesn’t have her own phase. Ayu never say that she doesn’t like Yuichi, but in this episode Fuuko says that Tomoya is her enemy just like what Makoto did with Yuichi. They are totally different and they are unique in their own way.
Oh well, I don’t want to give too much of my opinion. Otherwise, it will turn into 6 long days debate like in animesuki.com about whether Kyou is tsundere or not. lol
Well, apart from the obvious similarities (The distinct lack of common sense, short and astral projection), Fuko’s story plays out extremely differently from Ayu’s, which actually focuses more on the relationship between her, her sister, and her fiance, rather than any romantic relationship between her and Tomoya, as Ayu’s arc did, and the major plot point comes from a future event, as opposed to the discovery that she’s a ghost in Ayu’s arc. Without giving away much, lets just say it is fairly similar to what happens to torches when they dissapear.
On another note, don’t you think they are referencing alot of gaming features in Clannad?
Uguuuu!!! thats why i said she was only a little ayu-ish!!! >..
Nagisa hugging Fuuko was the best scene in the world.
lol Midterms….I had those awhile ago. They were a joke. Now, I’m looking forward to the end of the semester xD. Not that school life isn’t fun…Massugu GO!!
Oh god! If they keep doing something like every week my life wont be last longer because of loling so hard too much. XD
Oh goddess! everything about Fuko if i say she is #2 then there is no #1. Man i almost forgot that I was watching Clannad, LOL.
What do you guys think about that wood-thing, is it a star or starfish? Let see how many people here are Starfish alliance or Star alliance.
About Nagisa in this episode, if you notice a little bit you will see that Nagisa does something noticeable like she is really too good to Fuko, it is not like i said her character doesn’t fit with it I just think she had other reason. First, she hugs Fuko when Tomoya hits Fuko’s head. Second, she is really like to be Fuko’s sister. Third, she hugs and protects Fuko again when Tomoya picks a fight with Fuko. Fourth, overall she cares about Fuko a lot.
Question: Does Nagisa ever want to have a younger sister or DID she already had one before?
@ Michael: Would you hit it ;)?
@ Hopey: Nakamura Yuuichi’s voice isn’t as awesome as Tomokazu Sugita, but Tomoya is still an awesome character. The whole switching thing was awesome.
And now that you mention it, this is the first episode without a Tomoyo combo!
@ Kari: I like her facial expressions, they’re ridiculously cute, especially when she’ all serious.
@ Nightingale: Yea, gotta hate those angle brackets. Nagisa squirming in embarrassment was so awesome, seeing her eyes dart back and forth like that.
It’s a star ;_;
*walks around spoiler*
@ ItAintEazy: Haha, welcome to the world of KeyAni moeblobs. You have to dumb your expectations down just a tad to make it enjoyable, lol.
@ Fuzzims: I lol’d when Fuko asked if that means she could attack one too.
@ kenshin514: I avoid asuki like the plague, some of the debates they have there are just…x_x
As for Ayu vs Fuko, they certainly have differences in their idiosyncrasies, but all in all they’re quite similar. But I just hope that Fuko’s arc isn’t Ayu’s copypasta’d.
@ Alias: Yea, there was that whole RPG thing with Sunohara a while back, what’s up with that.
And thanks for clearing up that Fuko’s arc will take a different approach than Ayu’s…even if it was a bit spoilerish =P
@ Kay_Kay: Uguuuuu~ I miss Ayu ;_; Third Kanon remake, do want! lol
@ Totali: Your midterms were a joke? Lucky. Mine were insanely hard, what’s your program/major?
@ Siva; Star Alliance here, there’s no way those things are starfish.
Nagisa doesn’t have a little sis, or not one that we know of yet. But I’d say it’s reasonable of her character to be all protecting of Fuko, Nagisa seems like she’d make a great mother/older sister.
Fuko = Pure win XDDD ….Did’nt notice the Kuroi Sensei part until u pointed out…haha…
Dango dango dango dango………
So we have an interesting plot going here……….
Fuko is definitely very similar to Ayu and Mitsui also gave off a very Amano-ish feel………a combining of the Makoto and Ayu plots perhaps????????
*prays to the anime gods that the arc won’t be boring/predictable*
but hey I was surprised by the Shiori arc in the last round of Key-Ani drama so all is not yet lost :)
Humour was great in this episode :)…….I’m loving all the game puns in this series……..Mastered: Switching the Person You’re talking To”…..LOL classic…..
Also……Ryou+Kyou definitely remind me of an older version of Kagami and her sis from LS. :)….to quote the idiom of Shirukii: do want!
@ Siva:
Starfish alliance ftw! :)
AT Shirukii: Digital Media for web/interaction lol…..everything is project based. I had english and stuff too but whatev….
I’d join the Starfish alliance in a second!!! :3
@Kanon_fan82: “*prays to the anime gods that the arc won’t be boring/predictable*” I dont think you to worry about that. I can say this is just a small the starting point and this arc wont be have anything connect to the rest of the story but it is a lead that tells us there will be supernatural in this series.
To me i think Fuko has almost nothing to do with Ayu and Makoto beside she is similar to Ayu because they both are spirit form and similar to Makoto because they both hate him. But Ayu and Makoto both of them like Yuichi and want to stay close him but it is completely in a difference story for Fuko and Tomoya.
If you ask me why i picked Star Alliance then just image the reaction of Tomoya and Kyou when they first learn about it was a starfish.
Star Alliance VS Starfish Alliance
Star Alliance = 2 (Shirukii, Siva)
Starfish Alliance = 2 (Kanon_fan82, Totali)
Star Alliance +1,
I know its a starfish but I just can’t seem to connect that wood carving to a starfish no matter how hard i try… OTZ
Gomen ne…. hitode-san……. = =;
“San-nen B-gumi? KUROI SENSEI!”
Haha, Kuroneko Takyubin is the name of the biggest parcel delivery company in Japan (I think they’re the biggest, anyway), so the name is a joke on that.
You know KyoAni was thinking it, though. They just can’t resisting a little product placement for their own shows. :)
Dammit im part of teh star alliance to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Star Alliance +1, because having the case of the stupids is not cute.
Star Alliance VS Starfish Alliance
Star Alliance = 5 (Shirukii, Siva,Nightingale, Fuzzims, ItAintEazy)
Starfish Alliance = 2 (Kanon_fan82, Totali)
@ Agis: Interesting to note that Tomoya actually is in Class 3-B, lol.
@ Kanon_fan82: Nightingale has ensured us that the Fuko arc is quite different from Ayu’s, so no worries there.
As for the game parodies, someone at KyoAni must be playing lots of RPGs while animating.
@ Totali: Ah, that doesn’t sound too bad, well, good luck nonetheless! Don’t slack like I am ;_;
@ Siva: I agree, while there are similarities between Fuko and Ayu looking at character alone, their circumstances are quite different, so we should get a unique plot.
@ Nightingale: Yea, same here. Though if you think about it, a star isn’t much more likely lol.
@ 0rion: Haha, thanks for the random trivia, learn something new everyday.
@ Fuzzims: Excellent.
@ ItAintEazy: It’s not Fuko’s fault she got hit by a car and suffered irreparable brain damage ;_; lol
Yessss, gogo Star Alliance!
I have never in my life seen a star shaped like that… pix plz!
Starfishes ftw!!
@We be anon: LOL, it seems like you can understand what Nagisa said back then “No, that’s what i thought they were from the beginning.”
LOL, But i still have no idea how do you thought they were Starfish.
@Shirukii: I was always forgot to ask you about Claymore manga, how was it so far? Have you read chapter 74 yet?
Star Alliance VS Starfish Alliance
Star Alliance = 5 (Shirukii, Siva,Nightingale, Fuzzims, ItAintEazy)
Starfish Alliance = 3 (Kanon_fan82, Totali, We be anon)
oh ya, cool…
to balance it, Starfish Alliance +1 XD….use yr imagination and it’ll look like a fishy…haha
Still, at this rate, Star Alliance will be the winner :D
Star Alliance VS Starfish Alliance
Star Alliance = 5 (Shirukii, Siva, Nightingale, Fuzzims, ItAintEazy)
Starfish Alliance = 4 (Kanon_fan82, Totali, We be anon, Agis)
!!! Please don’t cheats the System XD !!!
!!!!!!!! Tomoya + Tomoyo !!!!!!!!
Nagisa does not deserve Tomoya>
!!!!!!!! Tomoya + Tomoyo !!!!!!!!
