Dango dango dango dan…hey is that a guitar?
October 16th, 2007 by Shirukii
I knew I had heard the dango song before!
A really long time ago (about a year now) when I was new to blogging, I was heavily into playing guitar and often scoured youtube for guitar related videos. When I started blogging, I took it a step further by looking for anime related ones, among the ones I really liked, I posted a pure guitar version of Lost My Music and God Knows from SHnY and Cruel Angel’s Thesis from NGE.
The guitarist from the video above, Karimono, was another one I found during that phase, but never posted any of his stuff because it was mostly themes from Key works, which I wasn’t really into back then. But then I remembered this video, Nagisa’s theme from Clannad, which was adapted into the Clannad anime’s ED, Dango Daikazoku.
His guitar arrangement for the song is awesome, it sounds like he’s using a synthesizer for the guitar in the beginning, giving it a very midi-ish gamelike feel. He also does his own bass track, which is impressive, as opposed to being lazy and ripping the original backing, he even adds a melodic keyboard part. But by far the best part is the last minute or so when he does away with all the fancy equipment and goes with the pure sound of his electric, it’s not exactly a technical death metal shred, but it sounded awesome.
Damn, as if this song wasn’t engraved into my head badly enough.
Unlike Kurikinton Fox, I don’t know much about this guitarist, but I’m pretty sure some quick youtube browsing will find you most of his other songs. Another one that I feel he did particularly well was Aozora from AIR.
Makes me wish I had more time to sharpen my own guitar skills…Oh well.

I like the faster pacing while keeping the laid-back feel, and the effort that went into structuring and layering is bonus. Great find!
thx shirukii, not for this but for the aozora link :)
I thought Dango Daikazoku was Nagisa’s theme
Dango Daikazoku DID take it’s tune from NAGISA’s theme
Probably Nagisa than Dango. But hey, same rythm. Gotta praise it for giving multiple themes with/without different lyrics or mix. 5 stars. Love it.
awesome referral. I checked out this guy’s other Key Sounds Label arrangements, and I really liked his work on Natsukage from Air, particularly after 5:30 where epicness ensues.
almost forgot the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDhoa3aJCi0
kickarse! sounds more like feel good music than an anime theme
good job
@ Intro: Yea, i love how he didn’t just outright play the backing and adapt a guitar part, he recomposed quite a bit of the song.
@ lolikit: Ah AIR, the superior KeyAni work. I”ll have to give that a rewatch (my fifth) when I have some time.
@ Endz/CherylHew/Nightingale: Is it Nagisa’s theme? I swear I saw Tomoyo. I’m at uni right now, I’ll check when I get home.
@ kei-clone: Ah, the one where he air guitars for a good minute, that was awesome, so much passion.
@ plxy: Anime music is feel good music! XD
Woah… thanks alot for both of the links, really love instrumental versions of anime songs, especially guitar 1s since I play guit – although my standard is definitely not comparable :P
I kinda want an mp3 version now.
I laughed at the title. :3
Pretty cool remix of the song; interesting that he went so heavy on the harmonics for the chorus.
Yea, you guys were right, it’s Nagisa’s theme, my mistake!
And I just noticed how much he used harmonics in the chorus, nice catch. Personally I think it’s a little overdone, but I don’t really appreciate harmonics anyways, I usually ignore them whenever I play a song that has them haha XD
Aside: I have a midterm tomorrow, so my Myself; Yourself post won’t be out until after then, it’s a late midterm too (7-8 pm GMT -5) + 1.5 hour commute home + watching episode + writing post…;_;
>Shirukii: Rewatching AIR for the fifth time? While the quality of the series is undeniable, I was barely able to watch it once, and it wasn’t an experience I would ever want to repeat. It left me depressed for an entire week. You must be made of stone. Either that, or you are some sort of masochist.
Oy! when it comes to guitar story, I lose my way!!! (Daisukete Mina!)
@Shirukii: take ur time.
@Erilex: For an entire week? wow, it must really deep for u. For me i was depressed for about 3 days after i finished 5 Centimeters Per Second but i have to rewatch it many times to get myself feel better. Lets see how many days i will after i finished AIR.
@ Erilex: It’s not that I’m heartless or particularly masochistic, I just love the occasional heavy drama. I’ve watched AIR 4x and Saikano 3x.
The first time I watched AIR I wasn’t all that depressed at it’s ending. But the second time I BAAAAAAW’d like a little girl. I absolutely love it. Sure it leaves me feeling a little melancholic for a few days after watching, but it’s an accomplishment for an anime to invoke that much emotion, I love it.
@ Siva: I managed to squeeze the entry in! =D
Wow, that’s a really gorgeous tune – I really need to watch some more Clannad, although I share your ‘meh’ attitue to the Key stuff. It’s great to see a fellow guitar geek who shares the Gibson SG lurve too…they’re really great guitars (especially when, like me, the Les Paul model is too expensive!).
He makes great use of the fingerpicking which I’m guessing he loops when he plays the ‘rockier’ lead line over the top. The bass and synth bits add some nice variety but that fuzz-laden part towards the end is really sweet…it keeps the laid-back feel but still makes it sound really impressive.
Great find, that’s made my day! :)
Dango Dango Dango big dango family….muahaha my bf hates this song..i showed this to him and he ran screaming from the room YAY..anime manages to torture him again!!!!!
Just so it’s clear, the start didn’t include Karimono’s synthesizer.
