School Days 11

I have a bad feeling about this

When I first began blogging School Days I did a lot of theorizing on how it would end and the various conditions that would need to be met in order for each ending to come to be. Out of the three possible bad endings portrayed in the game, the one which I hoped for the most was simultaneously the one most prone to being screwed up, the ending in which Makoto dies. The danger in that ending is that it had the most potential to end up with Makoto basically apologizing for his wrongdoings and keeping his harem, happily ever after.

And now, with Sekai knocked up and Katsura no longer an inch away from becoming a serial killer or diving off a rooftop, care to wager which path we’re on?

Episode Rating: 9.5/10

In the aftermath of the school festival, things are getting a little crazy. The airing of the sex lounge tape has changed the way a lot of people think of certain others, in particular Nanami is being looked at in a different light. We’re also shown a shot of Sekai who is absent from school with what looks like a bad stomach ache, scrolling through her text message history with Makoto. As for Makoto, apparently he’s gotten bored of Otome already because he’s got himself a new casual sex partner, Hikari. And to add to the suspense, a quick cut away to Katsura shows her stroking a clothed item that bears a striking similarity to a hacksaw…

As Sekai lies in bed, home alone, she remembers her earlier confrontation with Makoto where she demanded an explanation for the video of him and Otome. While she does her best to keep a lecturing tone and stay mad, she ends up breaking down, crying into Makoto’s arms begging him not to leave her, especially now that Setsuna is gone, he’s all she has left.

Meanwhile, Otome, who was previously okay with just the occasional fling with Makoto, is showing some signs of possessiveness, frustrated when she can’t reach him. She enlists the help of her trio to help her, but they are uninterested and Otome ends up storming off alone. The three note how much Otome has changed after her encounter with Makoto, which leads them to wonder what everyone sees in Makoto anyways. Natsumi finally steps up and says that they shouldn’t be left out of all the fun, which eventually leads to the three of them having a foursome with Makoto at his place.

Meanwhile, Sekai is still at home, half-heartedly scanning through her e-mail history when she suddenly feels really sick and starts to throw up. It doesn’t take her long to put two and two together and realize that she’s having morning sickness. Sekai is pregnant.

The next day, Sekai shows up at school with a serious look on her face, telling Makoto that there’s something important they have to talk about. At first Makoto thinks that he’s going to get another lecture about how he cheated on her, but gets an even worse surprise when Sekai tells him she’s pregnant with his child. Makoto goes into denial mode, telling her she shouldn’t joke about such things, which causes Sekai to get angry and yell that she wouldn’t joke about such a thing. She continues to yell at him, not letting him dodge the fact that she’s carrying his child and that he should be a man and take responsibility. And all this in front of a packed classroom.

Afterwards, Sekai goes to lie down in the nurse’s office where she gets over the anxiety of her pregnancy and smiles at the thought that she’s carrying Makoto’s child.

The gossip about Makoto spreads through the school like wildfire and soon everyone and their grandmother has heard about it. And so begins Makoto’s fall from grace as his harem begins to distance themselves from him. First up is Hikari, who tells Makoto to take responsibility for his actions with Sekai and refuses to sleep with him anymore. Next is Otome, after confirming the news she leaves him, disappointed at what the once kind guy she once knew in junior high school has become.

As Makoto stands in the middle of a street crowded with people and Christmas decorations, he becomes more and more frustrated as he can’t get a hold of anyone on his cell phone. Hikari, Otome, Minami, Kumi, Natsumi, everyone has blocked his calls.

And what of Katsura? After Makoto officially dumped her at the garbage disposal behind school, her mental stability has been on the decline. She spends the better part of the episode wandering around having ‘conversations’ with Makoto on her cell phone while in reality all she’s talking to is a dead line. In her ramblings, she fabricates a date between herself and Makoto for Christmas, arranging to meet with him in the shopping center.

And by a ironic twist of fate, her promise is fulfilled, as Makoto desperately keeps trying to reach someone on his phone and reminisces about Katsura and how screwed up things have gotten meeting Katsura, he ends up meeting Katsura, just as she planned. Makoto wonders what she’s doing out all by herself, covered in snow, and is surprised when she replies she’s been waiting for him. When Katsura starts spewing nonsense about their relationship, how Sekai is cheering them on, how they’re still dating and how she loves him very much, Makoto FINALLY realizes how badly his actions have screwed her up. He breaks down in tears and and apologizes and tells Katsura he loves her, returning the light to her eyes.

All the while Sekai is at home preparing a Christmas dinner for Makoto, happily talking to Hikari about how great things are between them and thinking about the great life that awaits her with Makoto and the child she’s carrying that bonds them together.

Thoughts

The ending of School Days is either going to be the most legendary of wins or the most epic fail in the history of romance anime.

There are only two ways we can go from here:

1. Having made up with Katsura, the two of them go back to Makoto’s place and celebrate their renewed relationship the only way Makoto knows how. As the time passes by Sekai worries about Makoto not coming back and goes to his apartment to find him, where she discovers him with Katsura. This sets off the chain of events that eventually leads to Sekai stabbing Makoto and leaving him for dead. BAD END! DO WANT!

2. Harem ending. Makoto apologizes to the girls and by some incredible breakdown in logic, everything is resolved and Makoto ends up with his harem intact, a master pimp. DO NOT WANT!

I don’t see how else the anime can end and not end up seeming like the whole series was in vain. But hey, I’ve seen a lot WTF endings in my time (CONGRATULATIONS Shinji!) so who knows.

As for Makoto…as much as I hate the guy, I have to admit, he’s the ultimate harem master. He manages, for a time, to juggle Sekai, Setsuna, Otome, Hikari, Natsumi, Kumi and Minami, that’s 7 girls, while making many of them believe that his feelings were earnest. I have to hand it to him, that takes both skill and a lot of luck. In fact, the only girls that have appeared in School Days which Makoto has not done the horizontal tango with are Kokoro, Nanami and Katsura (probably not for long).

But with that being said, I loved karma coming back and slapping him in the face. In the span of one night he lost his entire harem because of Sekai’s announcement. Watching him struggle in frustration as he tried to reach the girls was extremely gratifying, a sort of “Now you know how it feels” sense of revenge. And him falling in that puddle was great, I lol’d hard.

I also take back all the negative things I said about Otome, she was awesome in this episode. Even though she was hypocritical in her behavior towards Makoto, changing from being okay with casual sex with no attachment to acting needy. She redeemed herself when she broke it off with Makoto. She didn’t whine about him seeing other girls but then fall to his charm, no. She confronted him, broke it off, expressed her disappointment with him and then moved on completely, even throwing out the picture of the two of them together. Good show Otome.

But wtf was up with Hikari, I did not see that coming. I can’t see any reason why she suddenly threw herself at Makoto. It didn’t seem like she loved him, as most of the time she ended up lecturing him about his unfaithfulness after they were together. But she was quick to end things with Makoto once she found out that Sekai was pregnant, so I don’t have any particular hate for her, nor Otome’s trio, who also distanced themselves from Makoto after hearing the news about Sekai.

As for the last scene with Katsura…I can’t tell if Makoto is being genuine here. At first I thought it was just him being his usual self and going after the closest willing and able female, with Hikari and Otome and her gang out of reach and him not wanting to take responsibility with Sekai, Katsura was his last resort. But when he broke down and apologized to her, it felt like he really meant it, I almost felt sorry for the two of them.

Thinking back, things between Katsura and Makoto probably would have went reasonably well had Sekai not confused him by kissing him on the train platform just after he confessed. And seeing him reminisce about Katsura and the two of them back together brought up feelings of sympathy for the couple that was cursed by circumstance.

I’m probably giving Makoto way too much credit here, as he has proven time and time again that he is incapable of expressing genuine love and caring, and I still want him to die a horrible death by fire. But as in real life, I can’t help but hang on to that small thread of hope that humanity hasn’t gone completely to hell.

But regardless, it all ends next week. Finale title: School Days, which gives us absolutely no hints about how this will end up.

Will Sekai kill Makoto or will hordes of viewers kill the anime production team?

Your post actually made me realize 1 small little detail - the scene of Kotonoha with a saw wrapped up on her lap. I am hoping to god that despite her “waking up” she will stab him anyway.

Wow this was an excellent blog. Don’t you love when Katsura have those gundam seed eyes.lol. Those eyes are so scary, lifeless, cold and i love it.

  3. on 11 Sep 2007 at 9:26 pmDS

I think that after sleeping with Katsura, Makoto will somehow end up back with Sekai, and that will push Katsura over the edge. Then we may see her knife or saw action.

  4. on 11 Sep 2007 at 9:33 pmAS

To tell you the truth, I dropped School Days…I think I just got tired of Makoto’s BS or I just got bored of watching it, might be both. But I will continue to read your reviews to see whats going on…the whole pregnancy caught me by surprise. I too am hoping for the bad ending, might be the last School Days episode I look forward to getting and watching myself if it happens.

I see the possibility of a modified (or completely original) ending.

Consider this: what if Sekai isn’t the only pregnant woman as of the end of episode 11?

    > Next is Otome, after confirming the news she leaves him, disappointed at what the once kind guy she once knew in junior high school has become.

While it was nice to see Otome break off with Makoto, isn’t it very hypocritical of her to say this about him since she’s treated Katsura rather cruelly and slept with him behind Sekai’s back?

Also, I really wanted to see everyone else finding about his flings with Hikari and all 3 of Otome’s friends. And how will the bullies treat Katsura now that they slept with Makoto.

As for Makoto’s apology to Katsura… I have mixed feelings on this since while he did apologize and it looks like he felt horrible about what happened to her (does he or anyone else know about what happened with Taisuke?), he also then said that he loved Katsura… that just seemed rather quick and made me think he only wanted to have someone to sleep with other than Sekai.

I do think there’s still a chance at a Katsura going insane ending… if Makoto suddenly decides that he shouldn’t cheat on Sekai and leaves Katsura without warning, and then she gets bullied even worse by the girls…

And I’m a bit disappointed that Sekai didn’t seem to realize that Makoto also slept with Setsuna.

NOOO! Don’t do it Katsura-chan!!! Don’t fall for it!!! My heart dropped when seeing this, except for one detail…she had the wonderful-wonderful saw. ^-^

I’m going (hoping) for what Hinano said; Lively eyes and then STILL STABBY! And then she kills everyone else (cept for Otome, she redeemed herself) and then herself. Making for the most epic original ending ever!

Now if it goes the way of the harem ending, I’m demanding those 6 hours of my life back. >.

    Mai Hime ending, anyone?

Looking at the bad end description in the wiki I have high hopes for sekai stabbing him.

    Show ▼

I’ve got really high hopes now.

@ Hinano: As doubtful as I am that that would happen, I’d gladly welcome it over a harem ending.

@ Sniper: lol, thanks. Those eyes = awesome. Whenever you see them you know something bad is going to happen. Too bad Makoto cured her D=

@ DS: If Makoto sleeps with Katsura only to discard her in favor of Sekai again AND doesn’t get killed by doing so, I will forever condemn this series.

@ AS: If I weren’t looking forward to a BAD END so much, I would have probably dropped it by now as well, a lot of people are probably watching under this premise as well. Let’s hope we’re not disappointed.

@ W4: I’d welcome an original anime ending as long as Makoto gets the short end of things.

@ Wii: It hasn’t been subbed yet, you can find a raw torrent on TT, but that’s all for now. Subs should appear in a day or two.

@ Gin: Yes Otome is hypocritical in her disgust with Makoto and her own actions, but then again, everyone in this series is a hypocrite lol. So I can’t really fault her on that more than anyone else in School Days.

As for Taisuke, he’s probably at home, fapping to the memories of Katsura while they’re still fresh in his head.

    @ Kari: Oh she’ll fall for it, because she’s still hopelessly in love with Makoto and probably can’t even begin to come to terms with the idea that he is at fault in all this. But as naive as she is, I still sympathize with her ;_;

@ bakaneko: Oh God no, anything but a reset.

@ Kosume: That’s the ending I was referring to, it would be awesome to see it happen.

Makoto sashimi anyone? I heard that Sekai is a good cook.

  13. on 12 Sep 2007 at 12:08 amServbot

I was hoping that all the girls would come to realize that they have been had and then they would join forces and ready the knives.

Taisuke would be accused of the murder and the next scene would be of him dropping soap while showering in prison.

A year later the girls have formed a secret sisterhood that pledges to never tell anyone about the reality of Makoto’s death.

“The ending of School Days is either going to be the most legendary of wins or the most epic fail in the history of romance anime.”

You just summed up my opinion on this entire series in one sentence.

    Excellent post.

    excellent post…
i believe everyone following school days via subs/raw/summaries probably can’t wait `til next week… that includes me…
i don’t think makoto was really sorry when he apologized to katsura…
he was just probably really desperate at that point he probably can’t sleep at night anymore without a partner and since he realized that katsura was still in love with him he probably thought “why not?”
there’s a still a chance that both sekai and katsura can both still go stabby…
maybe this will happen… sekai stabs makoto, katsura hacksaw’s sekai, katsura jumps off a building…
there’s also another possibility that they will make the ending a dvd only release, and that the next episode is not really the ending…
well it probably won’t be needed aside from boosting sales since have a rating of R they could probably show all the gore they want already…
if the animators don’t give us a bad end i don’t know if their studio can last one day after airing the final episode…

  16. on 12 Sep 2007 at 2:45 amAlias

Actually, I’m more inclinded to think that the ending might very well end up with the Katsura ending. You have to remember, most animes of this genre generally avoid showing blood beyond a casual cut, and the only animes which shows half as much blood as the knife on the bridge bad end are Higurashi and Claymore. You also have to take into account that most animators generally dislike having their charaters comming to a bloody end….except maybe claymore. So I’m betting on a single end.

But seriously, though, if they pull of a harem ending, I’m going go barf. School days has built up far too much momentum for it to end that happily.

  17. on 12 Sep 2007 at 2:51 amkody-san

ok as for the apology i think makoto was acually sorry and does infact care about katsura judging by the tears and the flashbacks, with sekia there is a good chance that she will kill someone or that someone will de for the following reasons:
    1.sekai is pregnant.
2.makoto and katsura are back together.
3.makoto has just pretty much ignored sekai since her big anouncement.
and lastly 4. i dont they are going to waste all those knife and saw shots, and that includes the one sekai had at the end of the ep.
5.ok one more now its sekai who is dilutional and thinks makoto still wants her.

i think that sums things up.

  18. on 12 Sep 2007 at 3:51 amwxndy

i quite my friend said “makoto is a realistic portrayal of the male personality”

this is going to be the bomb >D

  19. on 12 Sep 2007 at 5:28 amW4

@ Shirukii: I’m all for a “Makoto gets ventilated” ending. The question I keep asking myself is, “Are Katsura and Sekai the only two girls in the School Days-iverse that know how a knife works?”

Yappa, I too am inclined to try out Makoto myself just to see what the goddamn hype is all about. His lay had better be greater than a heroin binge, I tell ya what.

But still, I’ll bet the bank that the producers kill off that bastard (that is if they want to make their bread and butter in the DVD market) but hopefully they won’t go for the ending where Makoto takes too fuggin long to die and we the captive audience had to be there to watch every useless second of it.

  21. on 12 Sep 2007 at 8:05 amSHiN_aKuMa

No matter what Makoto doing something positive or whatever, I still HATE the bastard.

As for Otome, yeah, she’s cool in this episode, she gave me the sympathy of not wanting her dead also. The rest of the girl will die for all I care. They’re stupid for falling in love with Ma… uhh… It pisses me off if I say that thing’s name twice.

  22. on 12 Sep 2007 at 9:43 amNightingale

    @ Shirukii
    Talk about critically hypocritical,
I think Otome cant beat Sekai in that >_>
Yea i really do hate the fact that Sekai is the ONE,
who started the whole mess to begin with.
But i give her credit for killing Itou’s reputation in school.
    -
Katsura… should i say noblely faithful or hopelessly stubborn -.-
As for Hikari… congratulations ur the 4th to be driven over! PLZ wtf… >_>
    -
BAD END!!! go go go go go go……. *endless loop*
    -
    Finally,
Thumbs up for Otome for the first time, spledid job for ditching that worthless piece of sh- inside and out.

Is it just me or did anyone else hear the ambulance noise in the next ep preview? o o

Wow…after i read your post i rewatched the preview tuning the volume really high and yes….you can hear an ambulance!
Now if that sound means what i OBVIOUSLY think it means,…

    Anyways,you never know…..

  27. on 12 Sep 2007 at 7:36 pmTotali

Considering that the creators have been appealing to fans by giving us WTF episodes (like this one), I’m pretty sure the BAD GOOD end is more than possible….even guaranteed. Otherwise, like you said, the production team will be suffering some damages.

I hardly noticed the saw (too busy lol’ing) and the ambulance sound raises an eyebrow.

  28. on 12 Sep 2007 at 8:07 pmkody-san

ya good pointing that out i just noticed that its the only ep to feature ambulance sounds in the preview this might be the only clue they gave us besides the multiple saw and knife shots lol

    lol

  30. on 12 Sep 2007 at 10:25 pmShirukii

@ maglor: But you don’t cook sashimi o.o

@ Servbot: That would be a very believable ending actually, seeing as the girls united and unanimously ignore Makoto this episode.

    @ 0rion: Hivemind. Thanks!

@ kaz3phyrous: I also thought that Makoto was just clinging on to any girl he could find when he saw Katsura. But then he started to cry, I don’t think Makoto is a good enough actor to fake tears, so I still think he was at least slightly sincere when he said all that to Katsura.

But nothing can redeem him now, he deserves death for his actions thus far.

@ Alias: Which Katsura ending? Rooftop suicide or teethed cleaver? Both are pretty bloody =\

@ kody-san: If they don’t end this badly after all the teases with the knives, the anime producers will go down in history as the greatest trolls ever.

@ wxndy: I believe that discussion erupted here in a previous post, concerning whether Makoto was an accurate portrayal of the typical adolescent male or not. I’d like to believe otherwise, but I’ve seen a lot of guys just like him in real life.

@ W4: Oh God, the last thing the world needs is more Makotos running around. Mission Abort! Abort!

@ ItAintEazy: I’m perfectly fine with the prospect of watching Makoto squirm around for 7 minutes as he bleeds to death =)

@ SHiN_aKuMa: Yea there’s pretty much no hope for Makoto redeeming his honor at this point. Otome, on the other hand, did quite well doing that.

@ Nightingale: The vast majority of this series’ cast is hypocritical. I, too, think Sekai is the worst of them all though. BAD END = GOOD END!

@ setesh: They better be. If not, the outcry will be violent and merciless.

@ kay kay: Katsura? I think Sekai is more likely to do the stabbing at this point, seeing as Katsura is no longer in psychotic mode.

@ EE: Whoa, you’re right. Nice catch.

@ Totali: I think the production team is doing this just to confuse us all and make it so the ending is harder to predict. They sure did a great job in raising the suspense.

  31. on 13 Sep 2007 at 10:09 pmYaoi-kun

Well, I have to say that even though she is a hopeless fool, I still love Katsura-san. She is the only character I actually like in the series, and the only reason I am still watching. Let’s see if we are lucky then the anime can make up its own ending. For example:

(I was bored @.@ –Made up ending #30,389)

    Episode 12

After that confession of love, Katsura and Ito-san go to the hotel for a night of -bonk- Ito FINALY chooses Katsura over Sekai.

The next day at school Sekai takes Kotonoh aside tells her that she is carrying his child and she has no one else to turn to for help. Amused, and now fully broken, Kotonoha invites Sekai for tea at her home but tells her it’s empty because her family is away for the weekend.

Relieved, Sekai goes to ease her worries. But once Kotonoha closes the door to her house she says:

“I am sorry but we are out of tea.” And stabs Sekai repeatedly with a knife
-Chainsaw- and buries her in the backyard. (kukkukuku!) Thus the bloodshed begins!

Back at Ito’s apartment after another round of smex ( bonk boink? Because to a man smex = love)) Ito tells Kotonoha that he loves her and leans in for a kiss, thus bringing back a flashback of him and sekai kissing.

    Kotonoha’s eyes go blank.

She reaches for a knife in her skirt, (apparently she carries it with her everywhere, hey, I can dream cant I?) And stabs his body until it is unrecognizable, laughing like a loon. Ohh yeah then lights his body on fire.

And one by one Kotonoha takes every one out. (The bullies, Taisuke.)

Now fully insane, days later, Katsura boards a train with luggage. On the opposite side of the train a boy gives her a glance (love?) She looks at him but he turns away, embarrassed.

She smiles, her eyes are still blank, she clutches the airplane ticket that reads ‘France’ and the scene ends.

“All aboard, next stop the air port, last call.”

    end
    =============================================

    Cliché?

Well that’s how I picture it anyways. That way Katsura-san wins! -Hugs Murderous Katsura pushy- And that way she sleeps with Ita (man hore? Slut?) :D that was fun.

  32. on 14 Sep 2007 at 6:47 amkody-san

thats awsome and the thirst part s acually very likeley on how it will start lol but yes u can dream but i think katsura X makoto is pretty much garenteed and thre is still the small chanc she will snap again once she finds out about the baby

  33. on 16 Sep 2007 at 2:56 pmKaelyn

Haha, oh god. This anime is a joke!

I just hope that Katsura gets what she wants.
Which hopefully results to a bad ending where Sekai stabs Makato.

Gods, I hate Sekai with all my heart. How old is she? Sixteen?
And she’s HAPPY to be carrying a burden that might as well screw her life completely? What a whore!
Oh wells, as long as Katsura is happy, then I am happy for this anime =)

Two more days till the finale! Can’t wait to see how they top off this episode.

Humanity HAS gone to hell. This was normal in my high school. Cheating and sleeping around are becoming more and more common. If a guy does it irl, it’s seen as “cool” to sleep around…if a girl does it they’re seen as a whore. Funny how society is so quick to spread hatred against gay couples while ignoring the straight populations growing tendency for deviance. I think Evangelion stated it best “humanity has reached the end of its evolution”

  37. on 21 Sep 2007 at 4:44 amMark Time

It is not fair for Sakai to be left alone with the baby.
It is not fair for Katasura to be left half (3/4?) insane.
There is no way Makoto will stay faithful, or even with, either.
The other girls are sluts, totally dumped Makoto, or in America.

Makoto rapes Katasura, who she hates him, goes futher around the bend and thinks she is having a baby. Sakai hates Makoto when she finds out about the rape. They kill Makoto. Sakai and Katasura, more sane after he is dead, raise the baby (they name Mokoto) together.

    Or maybe there’s just a nice boat. . . .

for so many anime i’ve watched this is my first time i’ve reacted through…. as in, shocked….

from fantasy to friendship to love to betray to (sex maniac) to psychotic case… wah…

what the hell was the creator thinking at first..

either way, thanks for a wonderful piece of anime.

ps. pls check if your lover like sekai or kotonoha.. hehehe, may we fuck up….

Yep sekai stabs matoko to death then kotonoha takes his head and then kills sekai(twas hilarous)
the hole cut her stomach open and laughing(not as cool as higurashi) but yes then she goes on a yacht with matokos’ head saying they can finally be together and it was presumed that katsura also dies on the yacht……END , but the whole “nice boat” makes me laugh a bit though I don’t really understand it …at all.

    PS, geeze I write “………” a whole lot…….yeah.
