Let the bloodshed begin!
Yet another anger inducing episode of School Days, but I’m consoled by the fact that a BAD END is pretty much guaranteed now. If the lifelessness in Katsura’s eyes, the closeup of the kitchen knives and the subtle rattling of said knives in her bag don’t paint an obvious enough picture, consider the fact that from episode 9 onwards, School Days is rated R. With TV gore censorship out of the way, let the blood flow!
Episode Rating: 9/10
Picking up where we left off last episode, Taisuke whispers sweet words of love as he has his way with Katsura who is still trying to recover from the news that Makoto abandoned her for Sekai. Afterwards she stumbles outside, half-clothed, only to see Makoto and Sekai dancing happily around the bonfire, and can’t help but cry.
The next day, Katsura sees Makoto on the train ride to school and surprisingly, he apologizes to her for not being able to come see her during the festival and tells her that he heard about the sex lounge from Otome. But Katsura doesn’t care about that, she’s happy just knowing that Makoto still thinks about her and bothered to apologize at all.
At school, Taisuke is acting cheerful and energetic, but no one has any idea why, they all look to Hikari for an explanation, Taisuke being the object of her affection, but she swears she has nothing to do with it. Taisuke ends up running off to Katsura’s class and taking the previous night as the start of something between them, asks her out to a Christmas party. However, Katsura rejects him, tells him that she and Makoto are still dating and that he should forget all about last night. Taisuke goes crying the Makoto, whining about how he should break it off, but that only adds to his confusion when Makoto swears that there’s nothing going on between him and Katsura anymore.
Left to do all the work again, Katsura is on her way to take the trash from the school festival out when she runs into Otome’s gang who bullies her about Makoto not showing up to see her at the school festival. Katsura defiantly shrugs them off and once again tells them that she and Makoto are still dating. So the girls switch to physical bullying, pulling the whole “LOL. I tripped you, you should be more careful. roflmao, aren’t we so cool, picking on her 4v1.”
At the school’s trash pile, Setsuna and Makoto are taking care of the clean up for their class, Makoto goofing off as usual and Setsuna giving him yet another lecture about how he should be faithful to Sekai and that it’s up to him to care for her once she’s gone.
As if on cue, Katsura shows up carrying her class’ garbage, Makoto gives her a hand because she looks like she’s about to fall over. Setsuna takes his actions as flirting and once again steps in between them. Another heated debate about the Makoto, Sekai, Katsura triangle erupts between the two girls when Katsura brings Setsuna’s little secret to light, threatening to reveal what happened between her and Makoto on the last night of the school festival. As Katsura keeps drilling Setsuna with threats to tell Sekai, Setsuna suddenly grabs Makoto and kisses him, stopping Katsura dead in her tracks.
This pretty much forces Makoto’s hand and he finally sets things straight by telling Katsura that he has no feelings for her, in essence dumping her. He then angrily shakes Setsuna off his arm and walks away, leaving Katsura in a state of mixed shock and despair.
That afternoon, Makoto ends up having some fun with Otome in the gym storage room, afterwards complaining about how all the girls around him are putting him through a lot of trouble, but not Otome who he says is different and exciting. As for Otome, she’s just happy that Makoto is finally seeing her as a woman after all these years. But of course, their play time comes at a price, as Setsuna stands outside the storage room listening in…
Setsuna calls Makoto and asks to talk to him, as anyone can guess at this point it ends up being another lecture about how he should only look at Sekai. But Makoto turns things around and asks Setsuna why she cares so much about what he does, she says it’s for Sekai’s sake but Makoto suggests that maybe she likes him too, she denies it but Makoto pushes the subject, saying that her kiss earlier carried her true feelings. He pushes her down onto his bed and despite resisting at first says that he can do whatever he wants with her as long as he promises to end things with Otome.
Meanwhile, Makoto finally breaking up with her seems to have shattered the last shred of sanity that Katsura was holding onto. Kokoro finds her in the kitchen late at night holding an empty glass as the tap water runs while she stares at a set of kitchen knives.
The next day, Sekai joins Nanami to attend a gathering between a bunch of senior girls. The meeting ends up being a showing of the videos they recorded during their school festival sex lounge. The first video up is Nanami and some random guy, which brings Nanami crashing to the floor in a fit of tears. But that’s nothing compared to the next video, showing Otome fooling around with Makoto, much to the surprise of Sekai.
While rushing to Makoto’s place, Sekai desperately tryies to reach him on his cell phone for an explanation, unknowingly passing Setsuna on the return train from his house. As she reaches an overpass she runs into Katsura who doesn’t even bother to greet her, instead asking Sekai is she knows where Setsuna is, not waiting for an answer she tells her that she’s been with Makoto. While Sekai tries to piece together what she’s just been told, she catches a glimpse of Katsura eyes which hold a cold and lifeless stare…
Thoughts
I don’t know what else I can say about Makoto (die, fire, etc). I don’t know what any of these girls could possibly see in him, he clearly doesn’t care about any of them. After going behind Katsura’s back and starting to ‘date’ Sekai, he seems like he’s bored with her already and turns to Otome for something “different” and “exciting”, and then he says something as cocky as “are you sure you don’t like me too?” to Setsuna and ends up bedding her as well. The only positive thing that Makoto has done this whole series is finally cutting things off with Katsura, no longer stringing her along. But even that indirectly hurt her more than he could ever imagine.
On that note, Katsura looks like she’s finally snapped. Her actions of late are reminding me a lot of how Kaede started to behave when Rin abandoned her for Asa. I can’t completely sympathize with her because, as I’ve said in the past, it’s partially her fault for putting herself through all this. I understand that it was hard for her to let go and move on, but continuing to delude herself into thinking that she’s still Makoto’s girlfriend was an inevitable dead end, she would have arrived at this point sooner or later, but sooner would have seen her sanity intact and not have her wander around with kitchen knives in her purse.
But above all, I’m more annoyed by the involvement of Otome and Setsuna. I thought these two wouldn’t play much of a part in all this drama, but they’ve thrown themselves in willingly. Otome acts all high and mighty by saying that she doesn’t care what Makoto does as long as he’s finally recognizing her as a woman instead of just a childhood friend, and while that’s better than most childhood friends can ever hope for, it doesn’t make her any less of a loose woman. As for Setsuna, she acts as if she’s doting over Makoto for Sekai’s sake, but her actions lately are really suggesting that she’s just as much in love with Makoto as Sekai is. That itself wouldn’t be too bad, but she’s acting on that love under the pretense of protecting Sekai, all the while she must know in the back of her mind that she’s doing it for herself as a last fling with her unrequited love before she disappears to France. She’s just as selfish as any of the other characters.
However, all this is some much needed karma for Sekai. I wonder what she’ll say to Makoto when she sees him, knowing that he’s cheated on her with Otome and now Katsura saying that he’s chosen Setsuna over her as well.
And of course there’s Taisuke…While I admit that Katsura didn’t really resist, it was only because she was in a state of lifeless shock after hearing that Makoto had broken their promise and gone off with Sekai instead. So my point stands, Taisuke deserves to burn.
With the conclusion of School Days only two episodes away, I can say with full confidence that we’re heading towards a BAD END. The recent events and Makoto juggling the girls CAN’T end happily, or even neutrally, it’s impossible. It would be an injustice to let School Days end without killing off a cast member or two and, more importantly, traumatizing Makoto for life.
Although I’m not completely sure about Katsura’s current state of mind, whether she’s more depressed or violently resentful, but the close up to the kitchen knives and the ominous clanging of kitchenware in her purse suggest that we’re heading towards Katsura going on a berserker killing spree. In the game ending she only takes out Sekai, but I for one would like to see her take down Otome and Setsuna as well. It’s been suggested that she might go after Makoto, but I doubt it. She has never once acknowledged that this is all Makoto’s fault. She’s offset the blame onto Sekai and Setsuna, but has never shown anything but love towards Makoto. I’m just curious whether she’ll kill herself after all is said and done.

I still mostly sympathized with Katsura-chan. Especially since now she’s most likely armed :3
Everyone is pretty much selfish in this show, but it defintely makes everything interesting. The next two episodes will be intense I hope. :D I’m looking forward to this madness ending with so much giddyness! mwahahah!

Okay, the Sonozaki torture chamber or Murder-kun isn’t even enough anymore. The only way I’ll die as a happy man is if Makoto suffers a slow anonymous, ignomimous death both emotionally and physically painful a la “Grave of the Fireflies”.
The only upshot of this episode is the uppances that has cometh for those anti-feminist wonders. Otherwise this episode just angries up my blood. I don’t really look forward to watching the subbed version where I can understand the other eight-tenths of what they are saying. I too might end up wandering onto a bridge with dilated pupils.

At least Sekai has the guts to confront Makoto about his stupidity, unlike Kotonoha who was too timid to do that and just stuck to denial. Gooo, Sekai!
Ooo, bloody endings.
Gee, I gotta know what Makoto has been eating, cuz his body must be oozing sex pheromone. With next week’s episode’s title “Everyone’s Makoto” he must be scoring with Kuroda, Nanami, and maybe even those three bullies as well.
Is Setsuna definitely going to France? If there’s a chance she decides to stay (for *cough*Sekai’s sake*cough*) then things can get really interesting…
While I’m expecting there to be a blood bath ending, I have heard rumors that the director said that there wouldn’t be a bad ending (of course he could’ve meant that there wouldn’t be a bad ending similar to the bad endings in the game). That and the title of the next ep is Everybody’s Makoto.
So, worst case scenerio: Makoto finds out what happened between Katsura and Taisuke and tries to make it up to her the only way he knows… And the last ep shows that all the girls are pregnant (or even better, Katsura realizes that she does have feelings for Taisuke). Everyone has a good laugh and the director is immediately gets fired for being shittier than shit.
If there won’t be any deaths, there’s still a possibility that Katsura and Sekai could work together to get some form of revenge of Makoto. Maybe trick him into thinking that they’ll have a threesome with him and then find a way to scare him or more.
And then there’s the killing spree ending… At this point I think that both Katsura and Sekai will be taking out people left and right (though I doubt they’ll be working together). For Katsura I think she’ll definitely go after the bullies and Taisuke (he better have something bad happen to him unlike in the games). And for Sekai, I’m sure that Makoto’s will be taken down by her. That leaves Setsuna and Otome.
One possibility is that the bullies show Katsura the video and she completely snaps and while she’s taking care of them Otome shows up and Katsura stabs her before she could call for help. Meanwhile, Sekai finds out what happened between Makoto and Setuna and while Setsuna’s trying to contend that she only did it for her friend’s sake Sekai winds up killing her. When she finally realizes what she has done she immediately goes after Makoto.
The other is that Katsura confronts Setsuna (probably after getting revenge on her bullies). Sekai goes to see Makoto and overhears him making out with Otome (maybe in the same manner as with her overhearing Katsura and Makoto in the game) and in a fit of rage she barges in and takes out the both of them.
Now hopefully the directors won’t blow this…
My favorite quote from JP when we were watching this was…
“I hope that she goes on a rage and kills everyone, including herself…then Setsuna shows up and goes - I’m the wife.” XD

I think we are just getting bad-ending tease, and we will eventually get good ending fluff.
BTW, I once ate at the same restaurant as Makoto and recently he’s been looking real good to me. What should I do?! It’s like I can’t control my longing for him!
@ Kari: While my sympathy for Katsura has waned over the course of the series, she’s still the only one who deserves any at all. I hope next episode is the killing spree and the last an aftermath, I’ve seen the gore that the endings have to offer, but never an epilogue and some explanation as to what happens afterwards.

@ Nightingale: There’s absolutely nothing ‘great’ about him. Most harem leads are like that, usually to give the viewer the impression that something similar may happen to them in their lifetime. But in this case I think it’s just to create a unified hate for Makoto.

@ Gin: The way they’ve set this up, it’ll be a disaster if they don’t go with a bad end. From the viewers perspective, there has been so much animosity built towards Makoto and much of the female cast that catharsis can only be reached through tragedy, which would imply deaths.
I stand by my conviction that if there’s anything resembling a happy or open-ended ending, I’m going to go back and rate all ep 0/10.

The more you blog this, the more I want to watch it. I saw the bad endings on youtube, and I think that there should definitely be something similar to the end of this anime.
The only problem with me wanting to watch this is that I’d never be able to see the final two episodes — I’m moving to a place where I can’t use BitTorrent or anything…=(

Thanks for summary. Makoto and Otome deserve each other. Makoto just seems to want a fuck companion, then him and otome are ok. Sekai, Katsura want mutual respecting stable relationships which Makoto obviously doesn’t want. I bet everyone is appalled at how Makoto’s blatant disrespect for women and people in general.
If any of the people who he cheated on had brothers and they got wind of what he was doing, he would have very least got his ass beaten and his “tools” broken.

But with all that said and done, I think Taisuke’s one of the few decent people in this drama. Though he may be completely ignorant of what the people around him are doing, it’s not his fault that they’re in denial, insane or trying to have sex with everyone around them.

Did anyone here bother to watch the 2 minutes after the closing credits? Setsuna at the airport with Makoto looking for him? Flashback with Sekai asking Setsuna to pass a note to Makoto?

ah… so the flashback is sekai asking setsuna to switch seat assignments… so setsuna gave up on him way back at the beginning of the term.

I’m not even refering the everyday harem male lead’s general “nothing great”, and even those male leads are lovable at least in the “nice guy” way, but Itou is a pure idiot who has no idea what’s the definition of “feelings” and only thinks with his *d*. HE does not deserve the title of harem lead.

I think the blood bath ending will be quite different from the game and everyone’s expectations. I can see Makoto being provoked by learning what happened with Katsura and Taisuke - and end up killing Taisuke in rage.
@Kingsol- They are keeping it real. It is utterly unfantomable why makoto is a player. Players are smooth and have skill and game or intangibles that attracts women. Makoto has nothing.

A girl has sex and she is damaged goods, a guy whores himself out he he is patted on the back. If some dog would screwed your mother or sister you wouldn’t be saying that would you? God you touched a nerve. I thank all other posters for not having this juvenile attitude, I reaffirms my faith in the opposite sex.
@Crystals - while I understand your frustration - don’t you think you’re taking this a bit too far? This is an anime - if you haven’t forgotten. Although my previous post may be “juvenile” - it was also a wise crack at the male posters.
Although, I don’t condone the behavior of any male to that of Makoto - I can definitely draw the line between reality and fiction.
Also, just because this fictional character is a bit crude in his behavior towards women - no one should feel that they have to hide their emotions or true intent in order not to offend anyone (that goes for gender and sexual preference).
In reality would this ever happen? Probably not… Are there men and/or women that inhibit these traits in the real world? OF COURSE! Some of these people you may even be a fan of… So, don’t be so naive.
The question you should have raised - is if this Japanese portrayal of young high school relationships a ‘art reflecting life’, video game gone crazy, or possibly a sociably accepted trait in the Japanese culture.
Why not raise the ethical issues that these relationships cause and discuss this in a more adult non-juvenile way? I’m game for a discussion if you want to take this to a serious level.
BTW - when you look at real life so-called ‘Players’ - there is nothing special or smooth about them either. It’s a manipulation game - and most people with a strong ethical moral background would resist these type of situations (in general that it is, however, there is a percentage of stupidity there too).
In history and religion itself - women have always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to promiscuity. This is an age old debate that will not be resolved in an anime blog. Women have always been viewed in this regard as taboo or precious. Well women are indeed precious - and yes - I would be angry if my mother or sister behaved in this way. However, you didn’t need to go there in your comment - that is only common sense.
You don’t have to be a feminist or pro-women and anti-men to understand this problem either. Sexual behavior between men and women will always be viewed differently. It’s how each of us individually deal with it ethically and morally.
^^^ What Crystals said. Yet I’ll confess that the series at times had me struggling to maintain my respect for females. It’s just so insidious how their feelings and characterizations are so realized and organic, yet the girls of School Days willingly conform to the worst stereotype of living sex dolls. The worst part of the series isn’t anything that Makoto or Sekai or Setsuna did, but the last episode where Otome advised Taisuke to be more aggressive with Katsura. It’s not enough that she felt the need to couple with Makoto in order to secure her confidence as a woman, but she out telling guys to rape girls? I know the producers should be ashamed, but dammit I can’t stop watching this show :^D

Loving this show. Soon as those gals qued up the video I felt that sense of dread. Not sure why, but I have a soft spot for sekei. Haven’t had a show make me feel like this since waaaay back in the day (kimi ga). Bring on 11!
It really is sad to see Katsura take so much after liking Makoto having affairs with others. It seems that Katsura had loved him alot and would do almost anything to keep him. The most desperate quote from Katsura meaning that she’ll do anything to make him stay with her was on the train at episode 8 ( part 2/3 if your watching youtube), when Makoto was sitting next to her starring at her breast, then Katsura said,” Do you want to touch them? Also, you can touch down there too… And when my sister isn’t home I’ll invite you over and during that time…”. Really… you see Makoto hella blushing and thats when i thought he liked her again but no i was wrong he ended up having sex with That small tited france girl. I believe that the ending should have ended with Katsura having sex with Makoto and that Otome, Sekai, and the small tited france girl come in together and get pissed and all they can do was watch. But then again it can’t end like that after what happend to Katsura losing her emotions and was starring at the kitchen knife… So i guess BLOOD SHED ENDING BABY!!!

The bastard had slept, with Otome (twice) and he’s laying his filthy hands on Setsuna without even a second thought that he already have Sekai.
The author of the anime must’ve chosen the Harem route (is there one?) and decided this will be the course of the anime version.
What really pisses me off is Kotonoha gave her womanhood to a complete nobody. Don’t tell me his name. I don’t even care.
Makoto is a mindless sex drone and nothing more. The final episode must have a VERY BAD (not sad), BAD ENDING! Makoto’s head on a pole will satisfy me.

This is the first anime in recent memory I’ve encountered that really makes my blood boil. It might be a good thing. School Days is good at provoking emotions.

Anyway, I REALLY hope that something good happens to Kotonoha in the end. She is meh favorite character and she deserves something good. I really hated when that bastard raped her. >
