Fall ‘07 Preview
August 31st, 2007 by Shirukii

Another anime season is showing signs of coming to an end, which means it’s time to throw out another preview post, and for once, I’m early to the party.
Many will argue that the Fall and Winter seasons lose out in overall quality to their Spring and Summer variants, but judging from the upcoming lineup that theory is looking more and more like baseless conjecture.
|
Da Capo II (Oct 17, 07) Let’s get this one out of the way first because I’m sure it’s the series that will have the most diverging views. Yes. I like Da Capo, A LOT. No, it’s nothing revolutionary, but I don’t care. The original Da Capo was, in my opinion, harem done very right. Admittedly, it was generic harem, with only a slight touch of fantasy via the sakura tree, but the dynamics between the characters were excellent and I loved every minute of it. The sequel will be focusing on the lives of the descendants of the characters of the original Da Capo, I can only hope it will be reminiscent of the original and not the fail of DC:SS. |

CLANNAD (Oct 4, 07) Tomoya is a third year student leading a boring delinquent school life until he meets Nagisa. Suddenly he’s having dreams of a desolate world and meets a girl with strange powers, she makes Tomoya a makeshift body from junk parts. Together, they wander this bleak alternate reality, the only beings that could be considered ‘living’. It’s KeyAni, what else can I say. I loved AIR and Kanon, I’m probably going to like this. Expect high quality animation with a metric ton of moe and the recurring theme of miracles. I just hope KyoAni hasn’t gotten rusty from doing Lucky Star, and God help them if I spot a blatant Haruhi reference. |
|
|
Ef- A Tale of Memories (Oct 6, 07) I wasn’t very interested in this series until I saw the prologue for it, but ever since, I’ve been very intrigued. The story focuses on Hirono Hiro, a high school boy who has a job drawing shoujo manga. One night he meets a strange girl in a church who tells him he will have a fateful encounter. Soon after he meets Miyamura Miyako and the two of them become friends, Miyako taking it a step further by falling in love with Hiro… I wouldn’t have guessed with the quality trailer, but the animation is by SHAFT. But more importantly, music by Tenmon, who does the music for a lot of Makoto Shinkai’s works. DO WANT! The only thing that scares me about this series is its low episode count (12). |
|
|
Shakugan no Shana II (Oct 4, 07) I’m a rampant Shana fan, not so much of the series, but of Shana herself. I’ll be the first to admit that the actual anime was only moderately entertaining shounen, but I can deal with another season of that as long as I get more Shana. With the popularity Shakugan no Shana managed to gain, I’d hope that the animation budget for the second season procures some amazing quality. As for the story…I don’t see how they’ll be expanding on the first season, as it had a pretty conclusive ending and I can’t say that the scriptwriting was amazing in the first season, but hopefully they’ll put something half-decent together. |
|
|
Kodomo no Jikan (Oct ?, 07) I’m really sick of people dismissing Kodomo no Jikan as a manga whose sole purpose is to cater to pedos and lolicons. Is there A LOT of loli fanservice? Yes. But Ichigo Mashimaro has a lot of that too, albeit less explicit. The point is that there’s a lot more depth to Kojika than people give it credit for. From Rin and her complex and traumatic early childhood (paper crane scene anyone?) to Usa’s struggles with a blooming inferiority complex and starvation for attention to Kuro’s struggle with her societally forbidden love for Rin, there’s more than just loli! And I hope to God the anime does the manga justice. |
|
|
Ghost Hound (Oct 18, 07) This series looks like it has a lot of potential, but aside from that, I know little about its concept, plot and characters. What I do know is that it has the same director (Masamune Shirow) and animation production company (Production I.G) as Ghost in the Shell. What I’m hoping for with Ghost Hound is a really good mindfuck series. I don’t think anything can match the political, philosophical and ethical themes that Ghost in the Shell brought up (in the realm of anime anyways), but if Ghost Hound turns out to be half as good, it’ll still turn out to be a decent watch. |
|
|
Blue Drop (Oct ?, 07) Wakatake Mari is the sole survivor of a tragedy in which all the inhabitants of Kamikakushi Island suddenly disappeared one night. Four years later she transfers to Kaihou Gakuen and meets Senkoji Hagino, the beautiful school council president school idol. It turns out that Hagino is an alien sent to Earth for reconnaissance prior to an invasion and was the one responsible for the incident at Kamikakushi Island. As Hagino interacts more with Mari, she begins to uncover more about human nature and begins to question the mission to invade Earth. I really like the premise behind this one, let’s hope they don’t screw it up. |
|
|
Bamboo Blade (Oct 1, 07) A completely broke high school teacher takes a bet from a colleague that he can assemble a kendo team consisting of five females that can beat his own team. The story follows this teacher who struggles to assemble and train capable of victory, for the sake of his wallet. Sports anime usually isn’t my thing (I had enough of it going through all 170something episodes of Prince of Tennis), but I used to practice kendo when I was younger and I still have the love for the sport. Plus bishoujos with swords = instant win. Okay, the real reason? Hinagiku <3 |

In addition to the series mentioned above, there are three OVAs which I’ll be sure to catch as well: ARIA The OVA ~ARIETTA~, Hidamari Sketch Special and the three hour Death Note special told from Ryuk’s point of view.
And that does it for the series that I’m sure I’ll be watching. Additionally I may watch the following series if time permits or if the reviews for them are exceptional:
- Dragonaut the Resonance, the trailer looks decent, but it doesn’t seem like the type of anime I’d enjoy.
- Minami-ke, I’ll probably give this one a look, it looks really slice of life, a genre which I happen to like a lot.
- Sketchbook ~full color’s~, Hidamari Sketch redux? I can only hope.
- Maple Story, LOL. Are they serious? What is this going to be about? Grinding? I’ll watch a couple episode FOR THE LULZ.
- Myself; Yourself, looks like more generic harem, might give it a shot if I’m REALLY bored.
As far as blogging schedule is concerned, I have no clue what I’ll be doing yet. There’s a strong possibility that I’ll stop blogging Sky Girls soon, not much discussion seems to come from the posts and the subs are too inconsistent to work into a schedule. The same can be said about Doujin Work, but there’s significantly less effort that goes into making a Doujin Work post.
With Claymore and School Days finishing, that means I’ll have an entire new blogging lineup. I’ll stick with my usual routine and blog three series ongoing. I’ll wait until the first episodes are out until I decide which ones I’ll pick, but if I had to make a tentative list, this looks about right:
1. Da Capo II
2. CLANNAD
3. Kodomo no Jikan/Blue Drop
But we all know how terrible I am at predicting the quality of series that have yet to air, I’ll be using first impressions posts as a more concrete judge of what shows to blog.

Once again I’m dumbfounded by your shitty taste in anime.
Da Capo? Shakugan no Shana?
Man, and I thought Kyousora was the dregs.
>> Many will argue that the Fall and Winter seasons lose out in overall quality to their Spring and Summer variants
Are you sure about that? I like to think that Spring and FALL are of much better quality and have around twice as many anime premieres as Winter and Summer.
“Maple Story, LOL. Are they serious? What is this going to be about? Grinding? I’ll watch a couple episode FOR THE LULZ.”
AWESOME. I highly approve. Do it for the lulz.
The show itself might not be that interesting, but reading people’s reactions to it could be hilarious.
Maple Story lololol
I have to see that.
Was a bit surprised by that last one, I’ve read the first Bamboo Blade manga, but I can’t say if I like it yet.
CLANNAD and Blue Drop seem interesting, I’ll probably watch Shakugan No Shana as well. (for pretty much the same reasons ^^)
And am I the only one seeing the Serial Experiments Lain reference in Ghost Hound? But if it’s mindfuck, I’ll probably try it out.
Wow, lots of sequels.
Also look forward to:
- “Ikki Tousen III: Oppai Sengoku”
- “Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai Huh?”
- “Kanon 2008″
- “Gurren Lagann High School”
- “Mahou Shoujo Otaku Kona-chan”
Gurren Lagann….High School?
Gonzo’s Dragonaut looks pretty interesting, it’s got a pretty dark atmosphere and dragon-mecha are always a plus. ^^
@lolikit: Elitism stinks.
Shakugan no Shana II – i havent finish the first one yet 13eps so far. It took me long enough for 7 eps just to get me into Shana-fan but im not a big fan of her yet need to finish the rest of the ep first.
Da Capo II – no idea because i have never seen the first and second season yet. But XD both season has 52eps? -_-
Ef- A Tale of Memories & Blue Drop – I am kind of like these 2 ^_^.
@Silvering: “Ikki Tousen III: Oppai Sengoku” r u serious? Do u actually like the anime or u just like the quality of the anime? i guess u know what i mean lol
Hmm… I’m mainly into eroge-turned-anime and mech shows so I’ll check out Clanned, Da Capo II, Prism Ark, and Gundam 00. Shakugan no Shana II is definitely a series worth checking (can’t get enough of the tsundere flame haze). Kodomo no Jikan looks interesting, loli-wise. XD
Gotta admit, I’m a sucker for attractive character designs so I’ll be checking all of the anime in Japan’s Fall Line-up with eye-catching designs.
Oh, and SHiN-gx will do its first time full series fansub. We’re not sure on what to sub but Da Capo II is a good candidate since our translator, gx9901 has experience from its game version.
@ lolikit: You already knew of my inexplicable love for Da Capo ;_; As for Shana, as I said, I’m in it more for Shana herself as opposed to the actual anime.
@ Danny: I never understood it myself, but I remember there being a debate about it back in ab.net’s irc channel last year.
@ 0rion: I seriously have no idea what it’s going to be about though. Did anyone watch the Ragnarok anime? What did they do for that one?
@ Zeroblade: Don’t get your hopes up too high, lol.
@ Vadigor: I don’t want another Lain D= that was TOO mindfuck. Dragonaut looks okay, but I’m not really into the whole mecha thing, I’ll need to see an episode or two to decide.
@ Silvering: I’m totally up for a Kanon 2008 XD
@ Siva: Don’t watch the second season of Da Capo, it fails, just watch the original.
@ SHiN_aKuMa: I’m going to warn you beforehand, stay away from Gundam 00. Apparently it’s being likened to GSD, not a good sign.
Good luck with the subbing! I second the Da Capo II nomination. I’ll be a little busy when uni starts, but if you ever need a QC, I’ll try my best to help out.
I can’t wait to watch Clannad and Code Geass season 2 :)
I’m really looking forward to the second season of Shana and it’s the same reason as you, all for Shana ^^. Kodomo and bamboo sounds interesting and something I might watch when it comes out. But what I really want to watch is the Death Note ova, will be interesting to see through Ryuk’s eyes, especially if they show where he goes when we didn’t see him in the original anime.
Code Geass I’ll probably watch that as well, Show ▼
Anyone know when Code Geass and the Death Note OVA are airing? Last I heard about it CG was scheduled for early October.
@Shirukii: I’m not really into mecha myself, unless it’s done right and at least has some sort of storyline.
And you can never have enough mindfuck ^^
@Shirukii: thank “Don’t watch the second season of Da Capo, it fails, just watch the original.” if i add this 26 eps to my list then i will have over 200eps of anime to watch -_- …… But i guess i have no choice ^_^
>>I’m really sick of people dismissing Kodomo no Jikan as a manga whose sole purpose is to cater to pedos and lolicons. Is there A LOT of loli fanservice? Yes. But Ichigo Mashimaro has a lot of that too, albeit less explicit.
Watch out, you’re going to have people get on your ass for comparing the two, nevermind how those who watch either are into the same thing anyway.
I predict KnJ won’t be as hardcore as the manga. For obvious reasons. That removal of Moetan ep 6 was a harsh reminder that Japan still has censorship, after all.
I also would recommend holding out on Sky Girls for a bit.
@ Sniper: Does Code Geass 2 even have an air date o.o?
@ AS: Apparently there wasn’t that much in terms of new footage, so don’t get your hopes up.
@ Vadigor: The Death Note OVA already aired I think, I saw a 4chan thread with screens of it the other day.
@ Siva: Feel the pain of backlog. XD
@ Owen S: They’re really not that different, Kojika is just more upfront with the fanservice, and makes no mistake in identifying the lolicons.
And yea, the content of the manga is a little too hardcore to adapt verbatim, but hey, I can always hope.
@ Shiruki the only thing that has been confirm is Code Geass 2 will be shown in early in October. That shit is the bomb :)
Code Geass 2, already? i havent watch the first one yet -_-! and Why no Air Gear 2?
@ Sniper: It was pretty good all around, but I think it fell apart at the end when Lulu’s conviction to finish the war was swayed by Nunally’s disappearance. I know the whole reason behind the war again Britannia was to give Nunally a good world to live in, but by that time he had compromised his morals so many times it was a shocker to see him abandon his troops for the sake of one person.
@ Siva: Because Air Gear sucked? Or so I’ve heard from almost everyone who watched it, I haven’t checked it out myself.
@ Shiruki: i guess maybe some ppl just couldnt accept it, Air Gear was an interesting show and it was funny as hell.
@ Shirukii i know what you mean. i can’t believe he did that. He could have finish the war first. I’m really looking forward to Code Geass2 because of lulu’s identity was revealed to Kallen, orange-kun is back, villeta remembers everything, Shirely find the note about zero, who shoot who in the end( my guess its Kallen who fired the gun) C.C sinking at the bottom of the ocean (I think she a better pilot than lulu) and more importantly and everything about V.V and geass.
Is that Code Geass really that good? i heard it was a good one but by the time i want to dl it, it was already Licensed and thats the reason y i skipped it because it hard to find it.
@Siva: If you’re looking for DDL, anime-eden still has it.
@Code Geass: CG2 is rumored to air in october, but nothing’s been confirmed so far. I’ve been looking forward to how the situation between Lulu and Kallen works out ever since the shower scene ^^
CG+DN Show ▼
–> You should use these things more often Shirukii :D
@Sliva: If you didn’t get to see Code Geass, then i feel sorry for you because you miss out on alot. That anime was good that i download all of it before it got licensed (gotta think ahead) veoh you may fine a few episodes in series or channel section.
@Vadigor: I know what you mean. I too want to see how this will affect their relationship and how this will affect her combat abilities. The remaining questions are also interesting: Like whats C.C real name, who is V.V, what kinda race is V.V & C.C from, Is lulu mother really dead, there are still much more important questions left.
Code Geass is one of the best anime ever existed. I think everyone knows that if you don’t thats because you didn’t see it or your just speech less.lol. The moment you watch this anime it will turn you into a fan. Code geass is famous for its plots, twist, interesting questions and cliff hanger.lol
@Sniper: slow down, you’re thoughts are getting ahead of your sentence construction :D
I think we can all agree that the Japanese are experts at creating cliffhangers (how they manage to end every single 20 minute episode of any give series with one is beyond me).
But I wouldn’t exactly proclaim Code Geass as one of the best ever, it’s good, and it combines several elements that suit me (war, rebellion, psychology to a certain degree, Macchiavellian actions by both parties,…) but it’s still too shonen for my tastes. ^^
@Vadior: Yeah i should slow down there.lol. I agree with the elements you see in code geass. By the way i know its “one” of the best anime. I know there are others like Death Note and so on but what do you think is the best anime? I think its code geass in my opinion, second would be death note.
Code Geass and Death Note are all very fine, but I’ll let Shirukii do the explanation, he’s got a touch for this sort of thing. :D
As for my favourites? Planetes, Welcome to the NHK, Serial Experiments Lain and recently NGE as far as series are concerned. GITS and Paprika as far as movies go :D
Goshusho-sama Ninomiya-kun all the way baby!!!
@Vadigor: thx for the link but i already know that because we r a big fan of anime, right? ^_^
@Sniper: i know what u mean “Veoh”, it is one of my best direct download.
OMG everyone here are all positive with Code Geass then how can i skip it this time? ^_^
And the other reason y i skip Code Geass because after i saw a music video where they show a scene where Lulu killed the pink hair. After i read the background of Euphie i was like wtf, y did they have to create this plot up to make a good person die?
I’m going to watch….
CLANNAD
Shana Second
Ef tale of memories
maybe one or two episodes of Kodomo no Jikan (I’ve read the manga)
and now a question. Do I desprately need to watch the first 2 Da Capo series to understand Da Capo II? Because I’m interested In the series in general.
@ Avisch: No you don’t have to watch the previous Da Capo series, Da Capo II will be an entirely new storyline, though will probably parallel the original in more ways than one. I would recommend doing the first season of Da Capo though, it was really good for a harem, stay away from the second season though, it was terrible.
Yay!! Waiting for…
-Ef- a tale of memories~ Music is great
-Shakugan no Shana II
-Kodomo no Jikan
-Ghost Hound
I guess this will be a great season
thanks Shirukii. I try to watch the first season sometime then.
Also I’m eager to see how you’ll blog all these.
@Siva: Not really following you on that one :D
Show ▼
@Vadigor: Aerith? I am not really a big fan of ff7 but i am going to be a big fan of Aerith soon because im waiting for ff7 Crisis Core to come out Sep 13 ^_^
About Aerith’s death, i heard and i know that her death wasn’t a futile one but it was a worth one. But if i have to chose Final Fantasy: The Animation/Movie i will have to chose FFX before anything.
Anyway, i just finished Shakugan No Shana, so i guess Code Geass is next.
Hmm Crisis Core, another reason to buy PSP?
I think not.
I’ll start working on getting FF 3, 4, 5 and 9 first :D
And I still have to finish 2, 6, 8, 10-2 and 12 >
OOOO!! Can’t wait for shakugan no shana season 2! Clannad sounds like an interesting anime. As i promised I will soon write a review bout an anime soon. Got test tmrw! Wish me luck guys!!! (^__^)
@ Shiruki: The second season of Da Capo wasn’t horrible, it just pales in comparison with the original series. Though I must admit, it focuses more on the sub-theme of magic than the actual interaction bewteen the charaters.
As for me, I’m looking forward the Shakugan no shana season 2, Clannad (MUST WATCH EVEN IF IT KILLS ME!!!!), Blue drop, Ghost hound and maybe Blue drop, though if I know myself, there will definetely be alot of reshuffling when the anime starts airing.
@Alias: then i will kill u first before u can watch it *evil lol*
