Make that first AND last impressions, because despite having no expectations going into the first episode and being completely prepared for the completely random “humor” that I knew lay in wait, I still think it sucked pretty badly. And so Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan 2 becomes the first and only anime of the summer season to get dropped, isn’t it sad Sabato-chan ;_;.

There were two major problems with Dokuro chan that led me to dropping it. The first is that the jokes were extremely lame and predictable. Take for example the scene pictured above where Sakura thinks he’s asking Shizuki on a date, but it ends up being Minami. Almost any seasoned anime fan scratch that, ANYONE should have realized after the first couple seconds of Minami not turning around and the camera’s focus shifting onto Sakura instead of a panned out shot suggested that he was confessing to the wrong girl, and sure enough.

Now this could have worked as a nice buffer into Shizuki showing up behind Sakura instead, wishing them good luck and Sakura being dragged off in tears by a lovestruck Minami, a situation which has been done many times before, but is still hilarious in its own right. Instead Minami randomly makes up some story about Sakura saying lewd things causing Dokuro to go berserk and impale him with excalibog (though I will admit that I chuckled at the doraemon face).

Which brings me to the next major flaw, the censorship. Half the fun in Dokuro-chan is watching Dokuro come up with new and creative ways to kill Sakura, but said fun was completely ruined by the monkey censorship screen.

I know that the censorship is because of TV broadcast and they’ll remove it for the DVDs, but it still hurt my first impression when some of the potentially funniest scenes of the show were cut out.

And the final nail in the coffin? Healthy Dokuro. I mean…come on, you can’t seriously expect me to believe that Dokuro, who appears to be pseudo-DFC when wearing her seifuku, is hiding THOSE underneath. No way, I don’t believe it. It was a pointless fanservice hook, and as you may know from my rantings in School Days posts, I’m not exactly fond of pointless fanservice.

Although…albeit a little hypocritical, Zakuro-chan is quite win

I may give Dokuro-chan another episode just to make sure that the first episode wasn’t a one time fail, but with the series looking to copy the disjoint nature of the first season and play off a lot of the same jokes, I doubt any redemption will come of it. Even Kugimiya Rie voicing Sabato-chan can’t save this now.

    Pipiru Piru Piru Pipiru Pi!

Hmm, Censorship bad, Zakuro-chan’s leg stretch good.

Whatever happened to Zakuro-chan’s attitude towards the entire situation from the first season anyways?

    Censorship huh…too bad…so sad…

haha, that first season was great. lolwut? George Bush has a blackboard eraser in his suit? eh? Kim Jong Il has fake glasses? Japan is launching an evil moe moe operation?

I’ll still probably watch the second season for the lulz. and for the theme song. and for Zakuro-chan.

Wow… I wasn’t even aware that there was a second season in the works and having seen this, I can’t say I’m impressed. Why ruin a good thing? Ah well, such is life I guess… I’ll probably wind up watching this one just for the sake of completion. I mean, there have to be some good laughs in there right?

Didn’t know it was out yet, I enjoyed the first series, but if there’s going to be censorship in this well, that takes out a lot of what made it unique. I’ll see if I can find this somewhere ^^

@ Servbot: Yeah…Weren’t all the angels besides Dokuro trying to kill him in the first season, what ever happened to that.

@ AS: Very =( Those death scenes were what kept Dokuro-chan interesting.

@ clazy: I’ll admit, the theme song is really catchy, I’ll probably keep an episode just to watch the op, or maybe dl the song.

@ SamuraiJ: The first one wasn’t even that great, but it was unexpected and really funny at times, which made it a tolerable watch. The second hasn’t brought anything new to the table and is censoring everything, so I can’t say it’s worth it to continue.

@ Vadigor: TT has it, the raws have been out for a while, subs came out recently. As for the censorship…at least it’ll be taken out for the DVD releases =\

@Shirukii: Thanks, I’ve already found a DL location for it though. Just waiting for my download limit to run out completely (26 megs remaining, huzzah, I blame NGE >

    …. it got me again….. sigh, I’ll just append the last bit then ;_;

*note to self: remove , button*

@Shirukii: Thanks, I’ve already found a DL location for it though. Just waiting for my download limit to run out completely (26 megs remaining, huzzah, I blame NGE) so I can still do some decent webbrowsing in the meantime. ^^

I watched the first season to see what this was all about. That was some wierd stuff.

This second season is going to a boring direction compared to the first….for all reason Shiruki has stated.

And yes Zakuro is win as always.

  10. on 26 Aug 2007 at 1:59 amShirukii

@ Vadigor: You and your 10GB dl limit have my sympathies.

@ Avisch: The first season caught me off guard with weird humor (even by anime standards) and turned out to be pretty funny/enjoyable. Seems like the gimmick has worn off D=

The subs I watched, from philanthropy, said they would release the dvd version later so I shall wait so I can enjoy the show to its fullest. ^^

Got the episode, but still haven’t found time to watch it. I’m also a bit reluctant to watch Dokuro with censorship.

Looks like the DVD Box set was released the 24th, here’s hoping the new subs are up soon…

Dokuro-chan mutilating the poor sap, a.k.a. Sakura scenes were censored, huh? Though I haven’t watched the season 2, hearing that it’s censored really makes me weep.

Now that I thought about it, it was the brain spattering action and Dokuro-chan’s skull panties that got me into watching Dokuro-chan season 1 and didn’t care about the plot, if there was a plot.

Final verdict: Wait for the DVDs.

  14. on 28 Aug 2007 at 6:02 pmVadigor

Just watched it, and while I agree that the first episode didn’t stand up to the original, it was still funny in it’s own right.

I’m quite pissed off because of the censorship, violence is one of the core ‘values’ in this series I’d say. And I wonder just what that bathing scene was all about if It diserved to be censored as well, unless those noises were Dokuro-chan sucking Sakura’s blood out…

  15. on 29 Aug 2007 at 10:31 amVadigor

For those who still read this, Philanthropy has released the DVD version, which ironically has about 10 times more downloads…

  16. on 29 Aug 2007 at 10:57 pmlolikit

Watching Dokuro without censorship is like reading Shirukii’s blog with lolikit, it’s just too —-

I can’t bring myself to complete that analogy T_T

  17. on 30 Aug 2007 at 12:52 amShirukii

Anyone watch the DVD version? How much better is it?

@ lolikit: Too much win to put into words huh? Just don’t scare away too many readers with your trolling.

  18. on 30 Aug 2007 at 1:09 amVadigor

Still downloading (curse you Belgacom), but I don’t know if it will live up to the sounds I heard.

*is especially interested in the bathing scene* ^^

Well, at least it can’t be worse than a monkey…

    can it?

  19. on 30 Aug 2007 at 3:06 amSHiN_aKuMa

    @Shirukii - I can’t compare the two since I didn’t get the TV version.
The gore fest seems milder than the first in my first observation. But if you like Sakura going through Hell and back, then the DVD is BETTER. XD

  20. on 30 Aug 2007 at 2:36 pmVadigor

Just seen it again, skipped most of the non-violence though.

There seems to be less gore than the first as you say, but they really cranked up the fanservice on this one…

Fanservice lovers and haters alike go watch the bathing scene now! :D

@SHiN_aKuMa: censorship doesn’t generally make much of an improvement over the original, so of course the DVD version is better… ^^

  21. on 30 Aug 2007 at 3:25 pmNicol Armarfi

I’d have to agree with you completely… It was far less gorey, and only a few of the jokes made me laugh as much as I did in the first season - they were also extremely predictable. Though… The first season didn’t start off as funny as the later episodes either, so I’m hoping this will get funnier too (and perhaps lead up to something as funny as the “hard gay” moment.)
