Claymore 21 >:3

JESUS CHRIST IT’S A LION! GET IN THE CAR!

Wow…just, wow. Any sentiments that there was a lack of death in the War In the North arc have been shattered, this episode was a slaughterhouse with a total of nine claymore deaths and three awakened being deaths. I can’t believe they killed off the captains just like that, that was brutal and totally unexpected on my part, especially Undine, who was developing rather nicely as a character, split in half like she was made of paper mache. Also, Flora, noooooooooo ;_;

Episode Rating: 9.5/10

The stage is set for the invasion of Pieta. In a flashback to Isley’s talk with Ligardes (Ricardo? Ligardes?) it’s revealed that Isley has sent the cavalry, a huge team of awakened ones, to wipe out every shred of life from Pieta, under the direct command of Ligardes, the infamous Silver Eyed Lion King.

When the fight begins, it’s little more than a massacre on the claymore side of things. The initial surprise attack kills off a few of the weaker ones without so much as a fight. As the battle goes on, things begin to even up a bit, Undine’s brute strength, Jean’s GIGA DRILL BREAKER and a tag team of Flora’s Windcutter and Clare’s Flash Sword manage to take out one AO each. As the fight progresses with Ligardes looking on, he tallies up the death count so far as 5 claymore and 3 awakened ones. What should have been a quick annihilation is taking far too long and Isley’s army is taking far too many casualties, so Ligardes decides to step in.

As the fight rages on, even Miria knows that if things continue the way they are, they have little chance of survival. However, even that small chance is obliterated when the army of AOs suddenly retreats, giving way to Ligardes who congratulates them on their efforts so far, but can’t afford any more casualties on his side. The massive flow of yoki he releases when awakening strikes fear into the remaining claymore, and even Miria knows who they’re up against and is trembling.

Ligardes gets straight to work, targeting the strongest of the present claymore, the five team leaders. He tears through Veronica and Undine with very little resistance and despite putting up a bit of a fight, Jean goes down after failing to land her GIGA DRILL BREAKER. Finally, Flora is split from head to toe with a single nail before she even knows what’s happening.

Even a berserk half-awakened Clare is batted aside with a single hand, which is what gave Ligardes the opening to close in on Flora in the first place.

Elsewhere, Isley, Raki and Priscilla are slowly making their way to Pieta, with Isley saying ominous things hinting at the bloodbath that’s underway there. As they continue along, Raki turns around to find Priscilla missing, and when he hears a woman scream, he rushes to find her. But instead of Priscilla, he finds a random local woman who is scared out of her wits and runs away crying monster. Raki eventually finds Priscilla in a cave, but is shocked to see her hovering over a dead man’s body, eating his guts. It doesn’t take him long to draw the conclusion that she’s a yoma and go for his sword, but when she starts crying and calling for her family, Raki can’t bring himself to kill her (not that he could anyway, lol)

Isley shows up soon after and explains to Raki that she’s not a yoma, but an awakened being, something that a human turns into. As Priscilla continues to sob while eating the dead man’s guts, Raki hugs her and begs her to stop, not unlike when he managed to stop Clare from awakening back at the beginning of Claymore, but this time it’s a futile exercise, one which Isley looks on to with a devious smile.

Thoughts

So…if Ligardes is -THAT- strong, able to plow through several single digit or low double digit ranking claymore without breaking a sweat, and Isley is even stronger than that, and Priscilla may be EVEN STRONGER than that…Clare has quite a bit of powering up to do…

I still can’t get over how many claymore went down this week. Forget the insignificant five that were killed by random awakened ones, but Undine, Jean and Flora all biting it in a single episode was unreal. Undine was getting some great character development and I was beginning to get drawn in to her personality. In the end Jean ended up dying without returning a favor to Clare which she thought was of equal magnitude to bringing her back from awakening. And Flora ;_; I just liked Flora, her mannerisms and her voice were subtly attractive and I wanted to know more about her Windcutter. EVERYBODY DIES IN CLAYMORE T_T (but nobody dies in Bleach, except that one guy…)

Another thing that was really interesting to see this episode was the dynamic between Priscilla and Raki. Despite finding out that she’s a yoma, or something close enough to one, he still goes to hug and comfort her. Whether it’s love, or the belief that he can return her to normal, it’s clear that Raki has some rally strong feelings towards Priscilla, which will be an interesting factor when Priscilla, Raki and Clare reunite. And what about Isley, what is he hoping to accomplish by keeping Raki around. Is he just planning on using him to control Priscilla? The further along we go, the more I think that Raki’s potential as a fighter and therefore as a claymore/awakened one isn’t that strong, but perhaps Isley sees something I don’t and wants to add him to his army.

I’m anxious to see how the remaining claymore will conquer the odds in front of them. Their tired, beaten up and have only one of their commanding officers left, and although Miria is the strongest of them all and has the best team management skills, how much will that really help when faced with such a massive powerhouse like Ligardes. Rather than a question of who will win the fight, I can only think that it’s a matter of who out of Miria, Deneve, Helen and Clare will survive this assault.

The only way I see a significant number of claymore getting out of this alive is if Clare suddenly develops some serious h4x. Other than that…maybe if the organization sent some heavy backup, like Galatea and Rafaela, or any of the other top five. But the “Lights fade. Lights disappear” of next episode’s preview makes it sound like we’re in for another killing spree next week

Again, I’m calling on the manga readers out there to give some manga vs anime comparisons for this week, are we really deviating far off the manga story line? But do remember, spoiler tags are our friends =)

Manga Countdown: 5 weeks.

Told you THE LION was hardcore.

The better half of the fight is coming soon, seeing how they broke it into two parts. Clare vs. Ligardes, if they don’t botch anything up, will be as epic as the fight between Teresa and the four Claymores. There are some battles that just don’t look as great on the manga due to a lack of drawing prowess (mainly the lack of speed lines).

As for the manga deviation, aside from how they’re in the wilderness instead of in some kind of mansion, only Priscilla’s AO status knowledge by Raki and his discovery of her nude have deviated so far. Nothing particularly major there, but I sense bigger changes later on if the story’s going to end at 26.

There are not much deviations in this episode except for the part that Owen mention. The battle was pretty much the same in the manga, but the graphic in the anime makes it seems a lot more tragic than in the manga. I can’t wait until the next episode, if everything working out well, it will be an intense one.

  4. on 22 Aug 2007 at 4:17 pmTrellisaze

The Raki scene wasn’t in the manga. He did find her naked in the manga but doesn’t know she is an awakened being. The fight is true to the manga so far. They could end with a nice cliffhanger if they follow the Clare vs. Ligardes fight from the manga, seeing as the fight takes five chapters to complete. Unless they go totally off the plot, I don’t see them cramming a decent resolution into only five episodes.

Ah, i’m really sorry but i didn’t like this episode an awful lot….I mean i should be jumping up and down like a twisted baboon trying to contain my excitement over the action, blood and gore in this particular episode! However i find myself in a state of mourning, CHRIST ALMIGHTY did they really have to die like that???
I’m so shocked…i knew Jeane was gonna die in some way or another so i was mentally prepared for that, but Flora? And the manner of her death, she didn’t even put up a fight…no way, she was a single digit with a promising special move……it can’t be. Undine was starting to grow on me since developing from the last episode (also, she kinda reminds me of Vegeta), i was feeling she might have more of a role in the following episodes BUT NO, she was mowed down aswell. The writers really know how to build your hopes up then rip it away from you. I just don’t feel right, that so many of the main claymores perished in this episode…man, this is what happens when i get emotionally attached to anime characters, i’m holding back the tears damn it!

feels like the writers are streamlining the numbers down for the finale. The power level/rankings are a mockery…it doesn’t seem plausible anymore.

  8. on 22 Aug 2007 at 6:59 pmZa_Paper

The Battle in Pieta follows the manga pretty faithfully, they just expanded the battle and showed the lower ranked Claymores being killed.

The scene between Raki and Priscilla doesn’t happen at all in the manga and up to the end of “Part 1″ of the manga Raki remains clueless about Priscilla and Isley being AOs. There is a later scene where Raki (and soon after, Isley) find a naked Priscilla at the edge of a cliff, crying and talking about “disappearing lights”.

  9. on 22 Aug 2007 at 8:12 pmShirukii

@ Owen S: Oh he is. Not that there’s many to choose from, but he’s my favourite of the male awakened beings thus far, I don’t really like Isley. Priscilla and Riful still stand above thin though, because they’re lolis, and by default that means they win.

Thanks for the manga comparisons, and the spoiler D= which I clicked for some reason.

@ shinichi1us: Whoo, more hype for the next episode, can’t wait.

@ Trellisaze: Hmm…Raki not knowing about Priscilla being an AO in the manga yet knowing about her in the anime is quite a big change. We’ll see how that works out.

@ Cliff: Spoilers go -inside- the spoiler tags =D But luckily for you someone else mentioned it already haha.

@ Jobrill: Ah, yea, exactly what I said before. The difference that knowledge makes can be plot breaking, but we did know that the anime was going to deviate. There must be some reason they decided to play it out the way they did.

@ Sim: In my opinion, rankings ceased to mean much a while back. But I do agree that the killing off of so many ‘main’ characters was shocking. But I love it when writers have the guts to kill characters off, especially when they are likable, key characters. The loss you feel when they’re gone is proof that you cared about them and that the writers did a great job building them. It’s what made Kamina’s death in GL so epic.

@ Za_Paper: Priscilla really changed from her old vengeful and bloodthirsty self, what’s up with that >_> Hopefully they set some time aside to explain it, or at least I hope it’s covered in the manga, another thing to look forward to.

So it looks like the anime and manga aren’t deviating a whole lot, or at least not enough to make it a completely different story. On the contrary I think the subtle changes will make the manga even more worth the read, so I’ll hold out until the end of the anime. Thanks all!

  10. on 22 Aug 2007 at 8:22 pmSHiN_aKuMa

I don’t get it why Raki hugged Priscilla. She’s eating human guts for crying out loud. Doesn’t he feels any danger? I’m positive that attitude will get ‘im someday. XD

Oh, I literally screamed the moment I saw Ligardes transformed:

“To Hell with the Circle of Life! I am Simba, the Lion King!!!”

    *rawr*

  11. on 22 Aug 2007 at 9:35 pmItAintEazy

Welp, at this point, unless the rest of the claymores retreat, any victory that happens will be implausible by definition. But looking at all the manga spoilers, once again Clare looks like she is going to rise above the occasion - again.

  12. on 22 Aug 2007 at 10:18 pmKanon_fan82

Man Ligardes is sooooooo badass!!!!!!!! :)…….By far my favourite villan in the series so far :)………

I mean yes, Ophelia was a tad mental and very entertaining, but this guy is just cool! :)…..took care of the high-ranking claymores like nobody’s business!!!.

If he’s Easley’s underling, it makes you wonder how strong the King of the North really is……and if Priscilla is stronger than that…..how the hell can she be beaten????

Looking forward to next week :)…thanx for using the spoiler tags guys ;)…..much appreciated!

    @ Shirukii:

a loli eating guts didn’t give the extra .5 to make this a 10/10 episode lol??? That surprises me :O

P.S. I finished the hardware installation of my computer today :)….have to wait for a buddy of mine to bring over a Vista OS CD tomorrow…….and while it won’t be unveiled until I move, my new blog is on the way….so keep your eyes peeled :)

@Trellisaze: “He did find her naked in the manga but doesn’t know she is an awakened being.” Did the manga ever mention that Raki doesn’t know she is an awakened being?

@Cliff: “Raki isn’t supposed to know of priscilla.” What make u think this way? Do u see the point of that scene in this episode?
“thats gonna result in some really weird deviating later >:O” for me, i dont think so.

@Jobrill: “I wouldn’t exactly called Raki knowing about Priscilla “minor,” Since this now makes the whole thing where he travels with Priscilla and Isley for……….. pretty much impossible to pull off unless somehow Isley hides his identity and convinces him he’s trying to control or redeem priscilla or SOMETHING.” as u can see in this episode, it seem like that Raki doesnt seem to be afraid of Priscilla or try to run away from her but instead he want to help her somehow and Isley seem like he want to keep Raki with him. So for the 3 of them to live together for………, it doesnt seem to be impossible for me.

@Shirukii: “We’ll see how that works out.” At this point i still can see it will works out.
Oh yea, i will point u out what u r missing in this ep, Did u notice that only Jean that were kill in a different way from the other 3? Do u wonder y Jean didn’t got cut in half just like the other 3 instead of hit go through her body?

  14. on 23 Aug 2007 at 1:16 amShirukii

@ SHiN_aKuMa: Raki, like me, is powerless against Priscilla’s loli charm.

I literally screamed “JESUS CHRIST IT’S A LION” when Ligardes transformed. orz, I need to lurk less.

@ ItAintEazy: It’s definitely time for Clare to h4x herself some more power, maybe a Flash Sword upgrade.

    @ Kanon_fan82: Flora dying made me dock it a 0.5 =P

Congrats on finishing your comp, how similar is it to the one I specced out for you? And let me know when your blog is up, I’ll be sure to blogroll you.

@ Siva: Funny you mentioned that, I was talking to Soda about that very topic. I notice now that Jean’s probably still alive, as the other 3 were literally torn in half, whereas Jean was merely impaled.

  15. on 23 Aug 2007 at 2:07 amSilvering

The folks at MadHouse did a good job upgrading the Awakened One character designs for Priscilla and especially Ligardes. Ligardes wasn’t nearly so impressive in the manga. Poor Ligardes looked like he should have been fighting Kamina rather than Claire. Priscilla kept calling him a ‘furry’ behind his back when she wasn’t making Wizard of Oz jokes. (Isley and Luciela’s awe-inspiring designs are another matter entirely.)

Berserk Claire? No, we haven’t seen berserk Claire, yet. The forthcoming FASTER! FASTER! sequence is one the highlights of the whole manga. I’m really looking forward to how MadHouse executes it.

Hopefully it will be, as Ligardes judged, “Superb.”

  16. on 23 Aug 2007 at 2:42 amSiva

@Shirukii: “It’s definitely time for Clare to h4x herself some more power, maybe a Flash Sword upgrade.” lol, it is way too early for Clare to has Flash Sword v3.0, but u should know there is only one way left for her to defeat that Lion, maybe make herself become THAT. (Aw, my demo leaked)

@Silvering: “Berserk Claire? No, we haven’t seen berserk Claire, yet. The forthcoming FASTER! FASTER! sequence is one the highlights of the whole manga. I’m really looking forward to how MadHouse executes it.” im looking forward to it too, and this the only reason y i gave up and ended up reading the manga after i saw Clare in that PICTURE, the first time i saw it i was like “Wow, No way!!!”
    And who is Kamina? thx

  17. on 23 Aug 2007 at 9:42 amHenry

The scene of Raki and Priscilla seems a bit off but there was probably a good reason for it and I doubt the anime people wouldn’t have done something so serious without the consent of the manga artist (dont know his name). I think that this scene will happen more or less the same in the manga later on during flash backs when Raki is releaved after the time skip. I also conclude that Raki will gain yoma powers after the time skip probably through infusion with blood and flesh of an awakened being offered to him from Isley after he makes a speech about what awaken being are etc, This would then make him a powerful hybrid so that he can “strengthen” his bond with Priscilla and to be strong enough to “protect” Clare later on, but however he no doubt crosses swords with Clare later on because he or she or even both will no longer recognise each other in a frenzy to protect their companions.

Great episode btw, though the death of Flora was quite funny, finger flick to the head… boom headshot.

  18. on 23 Aug 2007 at 10:08 amfuzzy

God this makes it way to hard to wait for next week. With the ease ligardo walked through the main characters in claymore brought a touch of sadness for me. Especially since it seems that AO like to rip of limbs mainly their hands to defeat claymores? And the “Silver Eyed Lion King” if he is that powerful how powerful are the other Creatures of the Abyss and furthermore will we ever see Riful and the other unmentioned creature of the abyss come forth to battle. This is to much I need a time machine so I can travel to next week for the neext epsiode.

Can someone please tell me if we see Riful battle with Isley?

  19. on 23 Aug 2007 at 11:21 amShirukii

@ Silvering: Is the fight really going to be THAT good? I want next Wednesday to come soon D=

@ Siva: Fair enough, do you think we’ll see a Flash Sword 3.0 during the anime? There’s not much time left, I doubt they’re going to do the timeskip.

And Kamina is a character from Gurren Lagann, currently my favourite running anime, it’s awesome in a whole different way from Claymore.

@ Henry: Again, since the anime is confirmed to be deviating from the manga, and we only have 5 episodes left, there’s very little chance of us seeing the timeskip, unless it’s a short epilogue or something.

    Flora ;_;

@ fuzzy: Judging from the dialogue Riful had with Clare, Jean and Galatea, and her general animosity towards Isley, I wouldn’t put a fight between the two out of question. But during the anime, doubtful. Start reading the manga? lol

  20. on 23 Aug 2007 at 11:26 amTrellisaze

@Siva: Did the manga ever mention that Raki doesn’t know she is an awakened being?

Raki still thinks that his companions are both human in the manga. He finds Priscilla crying at the edge of a cliff as the battle in Pieta is concluding. Isley and Priscilla are mentioning that tiny lights are going out in a place far away vol.11 page 122. Raki doesn’t know what they are talking about. That’s the last scene with those three shown together in the manga to date. Raki is still living with Priscilla in Isley’s masion in vol.11 page 159 of the manga well after the battle in Pieta.

  21. on 23 Aug 2007 at 11:28 ammosmos

Thank you Shirukii. I love your blogs.

I hope Miria gets killed too. Then Clare will really become berserk and finally awaken!

  22. on 23 Aug 2007 at 6:05 pmHenry

@Shirukii: If we have 5 episodes left I think that we should see the end of the battle of Pieta after 2 episodes. This should give time for stuff to happen from Isleys invasion which should take no longer than 2 episodes leaving 1 episode for the timeskip where we should see the apperance of Clare again at the end of the episode leaving a nice cliff hanger. This should then give time for the manga to continue and we should have new Claymore season in around 2 years =) Or the other possibility will be that the final episode will not finish after the timeskip leaving a large amount of time for the anime people to play around, there by leaving an openning for the possibility of filler showing Clare training away.

  23. on 23 Aug 2007 at 7:15 pmHangmen

Ligardes’ power is maximum. But seriously, I expect Flora to at least put up a fight. It’s like as if Ligardes is on ‘iddqd’ (yeah, you can Wiki that).

Oh, and I was gulping down on some delicious fish fillet sandwich while watching Priscilla having snack. Mmm, mutilated guts.

  24. on 23 Aug 2007 at 7:57 pmSiva

@ “Is the fight really going to be THAT good? I want next Wednesday to come soon D=” lol, THAT GOOD? i will tell this is the only one reason y i ending reading manga after i knew what happened in the next ep.

“And Kamina is a character from Gurren Lagann, currently my favourite running anime, it’s awesome in a whole different way from Claymore.” thx for this, but i guess i have to finish Shakugan No Shana first so i can caught up with the second season.

I guess we wont be able to see the FS 3.0 in this season because Clare acquired it after the training so many years in time skip. And the rest of episodes we r going to see Isley fights against the other Abyss, some background of Rafaela #5, and the other.

OH, did u know about Miria’s side stroy?

@mosmos : lol, sry to disappoint u, but my Miria wont be able to get kill so easily. And Clare become berserk or not u have to wait n see the next ep by urself.

@Trellisaze: in the manga they NEVER mention that Raki knows she is an awakened being but they also never reveal that Raki doesn’t knows she is an awakened being after time skip either. So the chance that Raki able to know she is an awakened being after the time skip in manga is still possible. Am i right?

@Henry: Im going to kill some1 if they release the second in 2 years.

  26. on 24 Aug 2007 at 3:50 amSilvering

    @Shirukii–

The fight really is that good.

Given how well MadHouse has done with Pieta so far, and with Ligardes especially, I’m looking forward to how they will handle some of the optical effects for the climactic confrontation.

For after FASTER! FASTER! comes the mighty Swiss Army Knife Attack. The “Superb” screencap should quickly become a 4chan visual meme, for better or worse. Yes, make sure to wait for “Superb.” Its the PICTURE that Siva mentioned as dragging him into the manga, so we’ll expect to see the anime equivalent at the top of your blog post. ^.^

And there’s an excellent surprise and another tremendously GAR moment even after all that!

The next episode will be the best of the entire Claymore season, unless MadHouse’s custom ending exceeds all expectations.

Holy. I can’t really say anything about this at the moment, mainly due to the fact that I’m still in shock after the supposed death of Four of the five captains, but it seems to me that Deneve might very well be the next user of the dual wielding style. Speaking of which, does anyone know how many Claymores survive the attack, if any?

  28. on 24 Aug 2007 at 8:30 amSiva

@Alias: I can say it is less than ten Claymores survive.

@Silvering: lol, we will have to wait and see how is MadHouse going to make this one for us and how impress they can do it.

Jeane’s dead? Nooo ={ all the anime bloggers are saying she is… I thought she got impaled only hmm…

Anyway, i was wondering why Ligardes didn’t come out and fought everyone if he didn’t want casualties to Isley’s army :S i mean he could have just killed everyone lol, i mean, that’s what I would have done, if I were him. I guess then there would be no story though lol…

And flora died too easily >

  31. on 26 Aug 2007 at 10:34 pmSiva

@mi: If u read all the posts here u will figure out about Jeane’s death, and no body here stated that Jeane is already dead.

Flora died so easily because she was space out or let her guard down when she saw Clare getting slap away. There is a reason for those Captains to die.

    Omg IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOMOEROTIC

  33. on 27 Aug 2007 at 2:03 pmandrea

another consideration….clare-jaine and the awaken beings like Isley-priscilla they are extremely similar, all of them are awaken beigs (clare not completely yet’ but jaine hey was pretty much awaken to me when she looked like a warhammer 40000 butterlfly)..All of them seem to be able to go from one state to the other )clare is still learning’,Jaine seems too late to learn is 1 episode from being DEAD)…in the end the plot of the anime\manga seem to go in the direction where “being” awaken “beings” is not that bad (is pretty much like being a transformer, if someone piss you off u can just mutate and kick their butt), and it is all about controlling it….i hope all the claymore will get the ability to control their powers…. And Clare has the same will of getting stronger that allowed Priscilla to kick Teresa butt big time….Go Cut Creator Go!! (ll.cool.j)

  34. on 28 Aug 2007 at 7:02 pmSilvering

    Oh nooooooooooooooooooo!

It looks like next episode will be leaving Claire’s uber-GAR moment for after a cliffhanger.

And it looks like everything is soon going to be thrown off the rails, for good or ill, by Raki. Thrown off the rails relative to the manga sequence of events, anyway.

I’ll keep an open mind regarding a MadHouse anime ending. Anime is all about alternative timelines, after all. Folks can just pick up the manga to follow the other story branch, and meet Aubrey, Rae, Miata, Clarice and the rest. It looks like we might night even see Alicia or Luciela in the anime, the way things are going.

  35. on 28 Aug 2007 at 7:58 pmSiva

@Silvering: but i cant wait to see Galatea after the time skip, i can feel that she is going to be something interesting but i dont know strong she is after that time.

  36. on 28 Aug 2007 at 9:05 pmCliff

    just wondering about something…
don’t worry its not a spoiler

in the manga after some time they start calling themselves claymores which if yall remember they don’t call themselves that. only humans call them that.
is this to signify the fact ther no longer part of the organization or is it just simply a slip with the writer or translator

  37. on 29 Aug 2007 at 2:23 pmShirukii

It seems like the claymore starting to refer to themselves as such is just a dialog slip up by the writer =\ Though I haven’t read the manga yet, so I can’t say for sure.
