School Days 06

Protip: Kill thyself.

First of all, sorry for the lack of posts these last couple days. Life has been kicking my ass and various things have been keeping me from maintaining anything close to my normal schedule.

This episode went more or less exactly as I thought it would in the scenario that Makoto decides not to tell Katsura about Sekai and cheat behind her back instead. As is to be expected, their secret doesn’t remain intact for very long (more or less due to the fact that Makoto can’t keep it in his pants).

Episode Rating: 10/10

Makoto is no longer holding back with Sekai, they are routinely making out at every opportunity they get. In this case, during Sekai’s break at the cafe with the sluttiest uniform I’ve ever seen in an anime. To make things worse, Makoto is completely ignoring Katsura’s cell phone calls at this point.

Makoto spends yet another night at Sekai’s house for obvious reasons. When the two leave her house Makoto starts to kiss her in public, Sekai pushes him away and warns him that others can see them. On the train ride to school Makoto meets up with Katsura as usual, who tries to talk happily with Makoto, only to be ignored.

When Makoto gets to school he is greeted by Sekai, who tries to act normal, especially because Setsuna is with her. But some easily misunderstood statements and embarrassed reactions later completely give it away. Setsuna correctly guesses that the two of them have moved well past friendship, and says she’s happy for Sekai as long as things between Makoto and Katsura are over, which Sekai lies about and says is the case.

In class, Sekai passes Makoto a note saying that she thinks they should tell Katsura about them. Makoto disagrees, saying that at this point it’ll be too much for Katsura to handle and she’ll probably get mad. The three have a VERY awkward rooftop lunch together as they each are undoubtedly trying to piece together the situation.

Katsura e-mails Makoto asking him if he wants to go shopping with her after school, but he makes up an excuse and runs off to Sekai’s house instead. On the way back from the shopping district, Katsura looks out the window to see what looks to her like Sekai and Makoto making out, her eyes do not deceive her, but she shrugs it off.

After Makoto and Sekai go through their morning adultery routine, Katsura is eagerly waiting for Makoto at the gate. But she’s interrupted by Otome, who calls out to him. Makoto tells Katsura to hurry pu or they’ll be late, and runs off without her.

That evening, Sekai says that he should go home with Katsura once in a while. On the walk to the station, Katsura is given a flier for a cell phone store advertising pair cell phones. Katsura suggests that they should buy them, even offering to pay for them when Makoto seems kind of reluctant. But in the end he deems it unnecessary and starts walking off. When Katsura goes to follow him she ends up tripping and falling. With a sigh, Makoto goes to check if she’s ok and notices she has knitting tools with her. Katsura confesses that she’s planning on knitting him a scarf (muffler?) for Christmas.

That night, Setsuna checks in on Sekai only to find her under the covers, pretending to not feel well. Setsuna takes her leave and tells Sekai to take care of herself. When she’s gone, Sekai peeks out of the covers revealing an e-mail from Makoto saying that he chooses her over Katsura.

The next morning, ideas for the cultural festival are being thrown around in Makoto’s class. But in Katsura’s class they nonchalantly decided on a cliche haunted house and got over with it, instead choosing to gossip about who Otome likes. When she gives a clue that the guy went to her middle high school, Otome notices Katsura staring at them. Suddenly one of Otome’s friends remembers that Makoto went to her middle school, causing Otome to blush and the rest of them take that as confirmation. When Katsura asks if that’s true, if Otome likes Makoto, she tells her it’s none of her business. But Katsura firmly replies that it is her business, because she’s Makoto’s girlfriend. Otome is shocked and a flurry of text messages go around to confirm the fact.

After the truth is revealed, Otome and her friends become even more scornful towards Katsura. But she pays them no attention. Katsura e-mails Makoto telling him she won’t be able to make it to lunch on the roof because of festival duties, Makoto forwards the news to Sekai and puts his hand up her skirt (lol, subtle). But Katsura ends up blazing through her work and getting to the rooftop on time, just in time to hear Sekai confess her love to Makoto, Makoto responding in kind, and the two of them in only partially clothed embrace. Katsura can’t believe what she’s seeing, and the dramatic tension is heightened by the slow motion fall of a ball of yarn that was to be Makoto’s Christmas present.

Thoughts

I don’t know how many times I’m going to have to say this, probably more than I’ll be able to count, but it’s the truth and must be continually stated: MAKOTO NEEDS TO FUCKING DIE!

I can understand him falling for Sekai, I really can. I can put my anger aside and see that, beyond the sex, Sekai has a generally more receptive and fun nature as compared to the shy Katsura, despite her efforts of late. Which is why I thought that maybe, just maybe Makoto wouldn’t be a complete ass and would come clean to Katsura instead of cheating behind her back. With that not having been the case, I’m finding no redeeming qualities in this guy.

And Sekai isn’t without fault either. Aside from the fact that she’s not resisting Makoto’s advances, because it’s obvious her love for him is making her powerless in this regard. She has the brains to know that she should tell Katsura about the two of them, even Setsuna knows this. She knows that they’re just delaying the inevitable and she knows it’ll be worse if Katsura catches them instead of them telling her, but no, she can’t bring herself to tell her.

I really feel for Katsura, at this point she is the closest to being what I would call a victim. Sure her shy nature was the reason that Makoto lost interest in her, but that’s not her fault. One cannot simply change their entire personality to fit the needs of someone else in such a short time, even if that person does seemingly “love” them. She’s trying her best only to be ignored and now (thanks to Otome) made the subject of hate and envy, ironically an envy for something that’s no longer true.

As for Otome, I wonder what part she’ll play in all of this. I don’t see her becoming a contender for Makoto’s heart, so I can only see her as another nail in Katsura’s coffin. In addition to just having lose her boyfriend to one of her best friends, Katsura will have to deal with the angry stares of her classmates with Otome on the front lines.

In other words, Katsura, as much as I’m rooting for you…you’re pretty screwed. Aside from literally throwing her naked, well endowed body at Makoto, I see no way that Katsura can compete against Sekai.

Whether we get a slightly melancholic and depressing, “life moves on”, or BAD END now seems to hinge on Katsura’s reactions to what she’s just seen. Remember, the things we’re looking for here are either the building of insanely violent jealousy or suicidal depression.

Another thing I’ve been hearing a lot lately is that the hate for Makoto is unjustified as he represents the common adolescent male. Well, yes and no. Considering his hormone driven desire for sex and the copious amounts of sex he does have, I’d say that Makoto is a fair representation of a portion of what would be considered the typical high school male. But remember that this show is being targeted at anime otaku who have probably played the ero game and many ero games like it, so considering the key demographic. No. Makoto is not an representation of his age/gender group, at least not in the average viewer’s eyes.

I can’t wait to see where we go from here. Things are moving more and more towards the BAD END that everyone is praying for, and I couldn’t be happier.

Note* Again, sorry for the late blogging of this episode and the lack of posts in general. The INSANE amounts of kanji and kata in the episode didn’t help either -_-.

Don’t you think you might be too harsh on general high school male?

Wow…….what a crazy episode! :)…..didn’t expect Katsura to find out so quickly…..but then again, we are only dealing with a 12 ep. series

And I completely agree…….Makoto needs to die! My hate for him has even surpassed Aono from Sola :P

Right now it looks like Otome is a prime candidate to do most of the killing, her victim of choice being Katsura :P….

I haven’t played the game, but if they are indeed aiming for a BAD ending, we might see Otome play a bigger role in this anime

I have to admit that even though I’m routing for Sekai, you can’t help but feel for Katsura :(……She finally screws up the courage to stand up for her and Makoto, only to realize the relationship is quickly dissolving into nothing :(

    @ Shirukii:

“Remember, the things we’re looking for here are either the building of insanely violent jealousy or suicidal depression.”

—–> Umm, did you not notice the Psycho-esque music playing in the background when Katsura goes to open the door???? ;)….Potential signs are already there :)

    @ maglor:

I knew quite a few man whores when I was in high-school, and at this point, Makoto is just in it for the sex….’cause he knows he can get it easily…..He is playing both girls….hence why he must die in a fire :)…..

  3. on 08 Aug 2007 at 9:48 ammi

    @maglor

Yeah I suppose. I mean he needs to get a serious slapping but I don’t think he deserves to die. But whatever, I totally oppose to what he is doing. What a jerk.

I mean kotonoha is shy… that’s her personality. She improved a lot since last episode but makoto is too dense to even notice.

Anyway… I kind of wish for the bad endings. It’s more interesting than the good ones, lol.

  4. on 08 Aug 2007 at 11:56 amShirukii

@ maglor: Really? I knew a lot of guys like that when I was in high school lol

@ Kanon_fan82: Otome has this weird, holier than thou attitude going on, and I hate it. Personally I hope she doesn’t play much of a role, School Days is doing just fine focusing on the three primary characters.

I watched the episode quite late and people were sleeping, had to keep the volume low XD Upon re-watching, yes, that is some really ominous music haha

@ mi: One of things that irritates me the most about Makoto is that he completely shrugs off Katsura. His main gripe was that it was a pain to be with her because she was so shy, but even as she’s working to improve that aspect of her personality he shows no appreciation. Forget being a good boyfriend, Makoto isn’t even being a good friend to Katsura.

You know, I sorta defended him in my prior articles on School Days as being–yeah, just an exaggeration of a clueless adolescent male. The mistakes he makes were, at first, understandable.

But not feeling ONE ounce of guilt for cheating so blatantly on Kotonoha? Not one misgiving? That eliminates whatever sympathy I had for him before. Sekai definitely bears some blame, but her problem at least is her weak will; her conscience is still active (if fading, it seems). But Makoto’s conscience has been seared. And we’ve seen earlier he’s the kind who may be prone to violence before.

This can’t possibly end happily. I await the lurid results!

After seeing this episode, I am going neutral on the Sekai/Katsura thing.
But I’m still rooting for Katsura D:

I am starting to get really annoyed at Otome and her gang.
Okay, so to start things off, she’s the one complaining about how Katsura always runs off to her boyfriend, when she is shyly flaunting her one-sided crush.
It’s pathetic how she gets angry at Katsura. It’s even more pathetic how her gang hates her even more for it. Is it Katsura’s fault that she has the charm to get a boyfriend unlike Otome?

I doubt Makato will turn back to Katsura (not to just get into her skirt). He seems to be head over heels for Sekai, sexually anyways.
I think Katsura will try to make him jealous, which, according to the game, she will probably go to Taisuke.
Then, cue the rape and bonfire scene.
    Oh gawd D:

  8. on 08 Aug 2007 at 8:12 pmAS

BAKA MAKOTO. I seriously want to beat his ass up…the way he acts is one of the worst I’ve seen, in real life and anime. I personally never played the game so I don’t know if what I just saw actually happened. I feel sorry for Katsura and was really hoping Makoto would stay with her as he seemed to be the only thing in life she looks forward to. Sekai is ummm…ok due to her feelings for Makoto overpowering her common sense but she needs to give Makoto a good slap like Katsura did to wake him up and confront Katsura about the two of them…it’s too late now though. I agree that Makoto is a growing hormone riled up boy, I went through that so I understand, but I never went the way Makoto did…his actions rank high up in the jerk zone and ass. I hope he learns to be more “gentle” and not so rough with everything.

“MAKOTO NEEDS TO FUCKING DIE!” i will granted u this wish for this episode.

@Kanon_fan82: “My hate for him has even surpassed Aono from Sola :P” LOL , oh really?

@Kaelyn : lol, even after this ep, I’m still rooting for Katsura, so u r not alone here, ^_^
“Is it Katsura’s fault that she has the charm to get a boyfriend unlike Otome?” lol it is not Katsura’s fault but the plot of the story.
“I doubt Makato will turn back to Katsura (not to just get into her skirt). He seems to be head over heels for Sekai, sexually anyways.” don’t worry, our Katsura still has 6 more episodes to go :)
“I think Katsura will try to make him jealous, which, according to the game, she will probably go to Taisuke.” dont worry, this kind of thing didnt had in my prediction. i will tell u what u and i want to see the most is not in the next ep or 8, 9 but mostly would be in ep 11, that is what i have predicted.

    Back to the topic:
I can see that Otome will has at least 2 of her episodes to show off.
for School days to end up at this point only in the half way, i can see what the author want us to guess the ending will end up a bad ending but what kind of a bad ending it will be for this anime at this point? i guess it must be a exclusive one.

  10. on 09 Aug 2007 at 12:05 amKaelyn

    @Siva
““Is it Katsura’s fault that she has the charm to get a boyfriend unlike Otome?””

I meant that Otome is idiotic to be mad/jealous at Katsura just because Katsura managed to get Makato unlike Otome.

  11. on 09 Aug 2007 at 12:21 amSiva

@Kaelyn : sry to make u confused, what i mean it is just like what u think that Otome is a kind of loser character in anime, almost every animes always have those kind of character in it and like i said it is NOT Katsura’s fault, lol and we both go for Katsura, right? :)

  12. on 09 Aug 2007 at 10:54 amShirukii

@ ItAintEazy: A true idiot indeed.

@ Mike: >> I await the lurid results!

If by that you mean death by raging inferno, ditto.

@ Kaelyn: I don’t want to see poor Katsura getting raped ;_; she has it hard enough already.

@ AS: I think Makoto is operating with the intention of getting as much sex as possible. Confronting Katsura may have resulted in a shitstorm that could have screwed over both relationships, not like it’s not about to happen anyways though.

@ Siva: Yea, I don’t remember Otome being a big player in any of the BAD END scenarios of the game. An anime exclusive ending may be in the works.

Katsura FTW! She needs a hug (one where the guy doesn’t try to fondle her oppai)

  13. on 09 Aug 2007 at 11:57 pmSiva

@Shirukii : there is nothing i can say or tell u about at this point and everything i said above is just my prediction of the next 6 eps but if Otome being a big player in the next ep then i will have more things to say.

  14. on 10 Aug 2007 at 12:05 amNightingale

whoever thinks ito makoto (lets not mix up with others) deserves to be castrated please raise ur hand(s)……

  15. on 10 Aug 2007 at 8:27 amSiva

For this ep, i am second u Nightingale.

  16. on 10 Aug 2007 at 12:54 pmKaelyn

    @Siva

I doubt Otome would be a big part, romantically for Makato.
She would probably be as Shirukii said before ” Another nail in Katsua’s coffin”.
Her character is made so Katsura has it twice as hard. The cheating sex addict boyfriend, the betraying slut friend, and her own push-over attitude.

  17. on 10 Aug 2007 at 5:22 pmSiva

@Kaelyn : “The cheating sex addict boyfriend, the betraying slut friend, and her own push-over attitude.” this sentence u can make me cry for Katsura, so plz dont mention it again, LOL

  18. on 11 Aug 2007 at 11:25 amxXMikotoNakadaiXx

The sad part is… Katsura was beginning to open up as Makoto had the relationship with her. The ass…

    Err, I hope she DOESN’T try to make Makoto jealous by going to Taisuke. Saw the scene unintentionally. 8,( Wasn’t pretty. Hasn’t Katsura recieved ENOUGH pain already? –;;

  19. on 11 Aug 2007 at 12:31 pmShirukii

@ Siva: I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens then =P

    @ Nightingale: *raises hand*

    @ Kaelyn: Poor Katsura ;_;

@ xXMikotoNakadaiXx: Exactly what I keep saying. Katsura is making a noticeable effort to rise to Makoto’s level, even though she’s not at fault here. Yet he still chooses to basically ignore her D=

  20. on 12 Aug 2007 at 4:07 amzenical

poor kotonoha.. evil makoto.. Makoto.. go to hell..i think Sekai is just as confused too..

  21. on 13 Aug 2007 at 6:10 amSHiN_aKuMa

I voted for a BAD END and a knife in between Makoto’s eyes.

Makoto: has a personality of a dead fish.

    Sekai: the hopeless matchmaker.

    Katsura: the gentle soul.

Seriously, I dunno why I watched School Days. It must be the female characters, the romance… or… I can’t seem to figure it out. >.<

  22. on 13 Aug 2007 at 10:26 amKaelyn

I bet I am the only girl who watches School Days! xD

    I watch it because it’s over-exaggerated drama…
Something I cant resist (k-drama is too slow sometimes).
But it just gets annoying with all the fanservice.

  23. on 13 Aug 2007 at 4:03 pmSiva

    What!!! Kaelyn , u r a girl? XD

  24. on 13 Aug 2007 at 4:50 pmKaelyn

    Haha, yes .___.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t watch anime for the fanservice, I watch it for the drama. It’s so suspenseful!

    Is it that surprising?

  25. on 13 Aug 2007 at 7:21 pmAdamk24

I think it would be really cool if they did 2 different endings with the 12 episodes. Like 1-7 is the first loop, then they do 5 more with picking up where episode 2 left off (intro stuff) and do a different story line.

I know this will never happen, but I can dream right? :(

  26. on 21 Aug 2007 at 1:41 pmandynai

Ah… this is such a dramatic series and if all goes according to the game, it wouldn’t be so surprising if the story gets darker from here on out.

IIRC, there is a scene wherein Show ▼

And if this scene was to take place, I, too, would be blowing steam out of my ears.

  27. on 06 Aug 2008 at 6:02 pmSaikukai

Such a sad ending…. well, it could have been better if he would just tell Kotonoha, but noooo, he just had to be an ass.

Well, in the anime, the most I could relate to is Kotonoha, because of her shyness, and I really felt for her when she saw them kissing. But, what I don’t understand is that she should of broke up with him right away instead of waiting for him to confess.

Sekai, the idiot matchmaker who stabs people backs. Well, all in all I can’t help but say that Im quite happy with her ending. I’ve never in my life hated someone that much before. She SHOULD of told her… looks like Sekai and Makoto are made for each other after all… there both RETARDS. >:C
