My certainty that School Days will have a BAD END is growing as each week passes, and I’m going to enjoy every second of Makoto’s downfall. If by some apocalyptic disaster it ends any other way, then it will go down in my mind as one of the worst dramas ever. Makoto needs to die, or at least suffer a fate comparable to death, this is fact.
Episode Rating: 9.5/10
This week, it’s the obligatory swimsuit episode that almost every harem has, whether through a trip to the ocean or an amusement park, the latter in this case. About half of the episode is typical amusement park filler. Makoto teaches Katsura to swim, the group eats lunch together watching Katsura’s lovey dovey antics, and the side characters accompanied by the token loli go off and have some fun.
The visit to the amusement park was originally planned as a one on one date for Katsura and Makoto, but when Sekai’s friend happens to approach Makoto begging him to ask Taisuke out to the same park for her, the outing became a group event. Rather than anger Makoto, it actually relieves him a bit, as he’s beginning to get fed up with Katsura and the awkwardness between them when they’re alone.
It’s painfully evident that Makoto can’t get Sekai off his mind. Even with Katsura pretty much throwing herself at Makoto, he can’t help but let his mind wander to the times he’s spent with Sekai. But the feeling appears mutual, despite Sekai trying to hide it, it’s clear that she shares the same feelings and only holds back because of Katsura. Even Taisuke couldn’t believe it when he heard Makoto and Katsura were dating, because he was positive that he was going out with Sekai.
The day winds down and everyone gets ready to go home. Katsura makes it out of the changing room first and talks with Makoto, inviting him over to her house because her sister wants to see him again. Makoto’s response isn’t very enthusiastic, and when Katsura sees him liven up once Sekai shows up, she can’t help but sulk a little. Seeing this, Sekai drags him aside and scolds him, dodging Makoto’s attempts to explain his feelings for Katsura and Sekai. She reminds him, with a painfully fake smile, that he’s going out with Katsura, not her.
After saying goodbye to Katsura on the train platform, Makoto finally loses it and gives in to his feelings for Sekai. Rushing back to her station, e-mailing her the whole way, he calls Sekai out to meet him. He confesses to her and tosses his relationship with Katsura aside (lol, “Katsura’ll be fine” my ass). Sekai knows it’s wrong, but with the guy she loves standing in front of her confessing his love, she can’t resist anymore, and gives in. The two go back to her house and sex the night away.
Thoughts
Aside from the fact that this episode made my hate for Makoto grow a hundred fold, I have to admit it was beautifully structured. The first half of the episode was an excellent break in drama, serving as comic relief, or “the calm before the storm”. Previous episodes left us with the impression that something big was about to happen, that shit was about to hit the fan.
The filler-esque amusement park portion of this episode brought the guard down, I sat through expecting a brainless fanservice episode, not exactly happy that I’d have to wait another week for further development, but enjoying the display of animated cleavage and such. But then the latter half of the episode rapidly shifts gears with a major turning point in the story, it caught me off guard and the whole scene came off ten times better than had it been at the beginning of the episode.
…but Makoto still needs to die.
I’m praying for the ending where he gets Sekai pregnant and cheats on her with Katsura, only to have Sekai come back and stab him to death.
But from the looks of it, my best guess would probably be one of the other two. Katsura slitting Sekai’s throat with a machete, or Katsura suiciding off the school roof.
I wonder where we go from here. Makoto seems to have completely fallen for Sekai, so will they tell Katsura, or see each other behind her back. Personally, I think Makoto is too stupid and easy to read for the latter, so my bet is that they tell her. If they did try to hide it, there’d just be too many ways Katsura would eventually find out. Makoto isn’t the most subtle of beings, so I’m sure his behaviour would be a dead giveaway.
But more than that, I wonder how long Makoto’s interest in Sekai will last. From the looks of it (him constantly trying to grab her ass, etc) that the only reason he prefers her over Katsura is because she’s willing to put out. Once he’s had his way with Sekai and Katsura becomes equally willing in the sex department, will he run back to her leaving Sekai worse off than before? Highly likely in my opinion, and knowing Katsura, she’ll probably welcome him back with open arms. *facepalm.jpg*
Unfortunately for my pick, Katsura is the loser of this round =( How she takes the news will be a good indication of where things go from now. If she just implodes into a fit of depression with the accompanying emo tendencies (CRAWLING IN MY SKIN, boxcutters, etc.) then the rooftop ending is most likely. If she starts off depressed but then goes into a fit of rage, machete to Sekai’s jugular is probably imminent. Most dangerously, if she takes it well, and does one of those “I still love him and I’m going to try my best from now on too” speeches, then the possibilities are left really open. On one hand it could lead us to the Makoto Dies ending, but it may also lead to one of the many *cringe* happy endings, which would fail on so many levels.
But hey, we’re not even at the halfway point yet, things need to go a little further until I can say with absolute certainty that we’re getting a BAD END, and trying to pick out which one it’ll be. The possibilities are vast and the drama is high, School Days is turning out to be a great watch. Enjoy your fun now Makoto! You’ll get yours eventually! (…hopefully? ;_;)

lol, so the one that make a move first is Makoto instead of Sekai? If Makoto is the one who make this move, then will he able to fall for the rest of the other girls?(it doesnt seem to be happened but there are 7 eps more to go)

it is just like what u have mentioned, it is too vast for us to guess it is going to be a bad or good ending. But u know what, every single ending from each episode of School Days only reflect to bad ending, dont u think it is a little too strange? if the author want a bad ending that much, do they have to reveal us that much details?
I dont want to say anything about Sekai’ character yet because i need some more eps first before i say it. But from what i judge about her character so far, she is a main character that make to be sacrifice for the other.

Makoto needs to be thrown to a shark pool. I’d always felt that sekai stabbing him is being way too generous….. he deserves a painful death….
Just a thought, but perhaps the anime won’t be merely content to recycle one of the game’s pre-established ‘bad endings’ and will instead devise its own multiple homicide orgy of self-destruction on the same level of Elfen Lied / Higurashi, etc?
Why settle for a mere single character ending it all after 7 episodes of angst when you can build to a riveting tragic climax that incorporates ALL THREE endings in one momentous bloodbath.
Let’s say Katsura goes nuts, plans to ambush Sekai and Makoto and accidentally machetes Kokoro to death as she’s trying to reconcile Makoto to give her big sis another chance.
Sekai confronts Makoto in his cheating ways, stabs him, leaving him to die in a pool of his own blood, Katsura freaks out, major catfight that Sekai comes out on the losing end of, Katsura suicides off the top of the building in front of Setsuna and company who are planning a rescue and Makoto utters his last gasp of breath musing over what life would have been like had he been gay.
@ animexploit: Not having played the game, I’m not sure how fast the pacing is going. But meh, if they get ahead of themselves, they’ll probably just throw a filler ep in, no big deal.
@ Servbot: Quite a fitting song. But despite Sekai’s usually energetic personality, she seems to be a little shy in bed lol.
@ Siva: The rest of the girls are unimportant, only Sekai and Katsura are romantic interests for Makoto.
The happy beginning was misleading D= I wasn’t expecting an angstfest this episode.
As for the ending, I really do believe they have a bad end in mind, things have gone way past the point where everyone can come out of it happy.
@ Nightingale: Well, it was a slow death. It didn’t look that painful, but I’ve never been stabbed in the abdomen, so don’t take my word on that.
@ wicks: Such an ending would be too much concentrated awesomeness for a mere human to cope with. If such an ending were to take place, I would have to stop watching anime, because the likelihood of anything ever being better would be slim to none.
For sake of all the characters in School Days, Makoto must stop breathing as soon as possible. Despite all the things people might dislike about this series, I find it surprising that they have incorporated many good songs as insert song and ending songs. Music alone can’t carry the series, but if this keeps up, we might be mentioning this series in the future purely for the sake of the all the good songs in it.
congrats shiruki on summerizing everyone and explaining the absurbities of our comments ya everyone has put some pretty dam good comments* looks at wicks* but really now that they have gone and done this id say even for filler ep’s they will still have some relavence to some part of the story just look at this ep it kinda starts like a filler then bam they drop the biggest bombshell in anime on ur ass honely if they dont deliver a bad ending they will have wasted everyones time here

had to watch this episode raw :(…..my experience in the past few weeks has taught me that it is futile to wait for subs and still be part of the active blog discussions……..

And despite being a complete bastard, Makoto still gets 10 points of awesomeness for bedding a harem-ette before the halfway point of the series ;)…..I agree that the best ending for this show will somehow involve his death and/or demise

Granted we are not yet at the halfway point, but I don’t think a rape by Taisuke is in the works….he provides comic relief to compensate for the more intense portions of the show…It’s still early though so you never know!!!
@ maglor: That would be a shame, especially since music is the most overlooked point in anime when I evaluate them. No soundtrack has ever carried a series for me, cept maybe the title song of Sousei no Aquarion, that was win.

Not that I have anything against Sekai, but for some reason my fandom went to Katsura. Maybe it’s because of how hypocritical Sekai is, her mind says one thing, but her actions say another. (p.s. it’s “banzai” =P)
As much as I could see the rape scene with Taisuke happening, I think the script writers don’t have the guts to put it in. Unless this series is airing at like…3 a.m. in Japan, lol.
Btw, did you manage to understand everything in the raw? Or did you use my summary to fill in what you didn’t understand? I’m just curious as I’m always trying to tweak the length of my summaries and what to put in/leave out.

I was actually surprised at how much I understood just by context…
Granted there was a lot of dialouge I didn’t catch/a few things I misunderstood….especially the more light-hearted (and undoubtedly sexual) comments………
For example, I thought Katsura was afraid to go in the deep end, not that she didn’t know how to swim….and I didn’t know that Sekai’s friend was asking to be set up with Taisuke…I thought she just said “I’d like to take someone I like/love”
The only part where I was COMPLETELY lost is the conversation between Sekai and Makoto when Katsura goes for a snack (from approx. 9:33-11:50), but thats where subs can help me out when they finally arrive ;)
I’m also looking forward to knowing what Makoto’s confession says lol…..I did catch “Katsura will be fine/doesn’t have to know” and also Sekai saying “My mom will hear us downstairs”– or something to that effect– before getting it on with Makoto :)
And to answer your question, no I didn’t necessarily visit this blog to clear up the parts I didn’t get, although it helped somewhat :)…..
Personally, I don’t think thats the blogger’s job…….it’s more to stir up shit, stimulate conversation, and postulate crackpot theories :)

Ok, I just have to type a long lecture here.
“MAKOTO NEEDS TO DIE” Well… I think that’s a bit exagurated. I mean is cheating enough to kill someone, I don’t think so. Death shouldn’t be used as a punishment for anything. (Except for maybe some serial killers etc.) I know you people will understand this if someone you know dies an non-natural death. Makoto is just a stupid and horny teenager, weren’t we all once? I understand if you dislike him though.
Personally I like Sekai the most, for some reason I can totally understand her. Think if this situation comes on you:
You have a huge crush on a guy/girl. The target of your crush instead likes another girl and you decide to hook em up becouse you want to get closer to the guy / you have a gentle helping nature. Then you happen to become good friends with the partner of your crush. Sometime later the crush tells you that he/she likes you. You try so hard not to have sexual contact with the crush becouse you don’t want to end up hurting your friend. But I bet for most people (If you really love the person) you end up with the crush. (Human instincts)
So try to be understanding agains the characters, just think if the same situation happens to you.
The result of the conflict: Atleast one of the characters gets an broken heart. (Although I hope for and ending that is happy to everyone but after thinking it out I find that impossible :D)
ive been thinking and i think there is still a way for it to end happy but at the same time still be a good show but that would mean makoto would ahve to own up to what hes done and make things right at the risk of losing everything lol that in itself is happy lol
Makoto should indeed get the most painfull death of them all… he’s an asshole who’s only interested in body contact. His “love” for Sekai is only because his dick is thinking and not his heart…. That is all :)
