Poll Results: Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei vs Doujin Work

The most recent poll to decide what series would round out my Summer 07 schedule ended up being a one on one between Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei and Doujin Work. Well, Zetsubo Sensei won, but I have decided to exercise my right of tyranny and pick Doujin Work instead.
The reason is simple, I couldn’t manage to bring together a coherent post about Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei together, and believe me, I tried.
With SHAFT at the helm of Zetsubo Sensei, I can’t say that I didn’t expect it to be another mash up of vague anime/manga/culture references like the subtle Hidamari Sketch one pictured above. Seems like any anime situated in a school setting is doomed to this fate (ie. Negima!?, Pani Poni Dash, Hidamari Sketch), and while it’s not at all a bad thing, it’s near impossible to blog.
What I ended up with when I tried was something like this:
Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei 03
As if the Pink Supervisor’s class wasn’t strange enough, a blond haired transfer student who happens to suffer from multiple personality disorder is added to the mix. Meanwhile stalker-tan continues to stalk, Fuura continues to be overly optimistic, there’s a new girl who only communicates via text messages, and an illegal immigrant sneaks into the class roster.
But such things are trivial, instead, I concentrated on trying to identify the multitude of references used throughout the episode. Only to fail, recognizing a mere 5 out of the seemingly infinite amount.

I think this one’s pretty obvious.

Gurren Lagann quote, also the bracketed (moe) is most likely a reference to the Lucky Star: Moe Drill game for the Nintendo DS.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

FUSION HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Another Gurren Lagann quote and one from Full Metal Alchemist. I also like to think that they’re making fun of L*S with “Food Luck”, but that’s a stretch.
* * *
So there you have it, barring picking out references for another 10 episodes, I think the potential for Zetsubo Sensei’s entries are kinda limited. So unless the masses say otherwise, victory to Doujin Work!

Haha, ah, I thought they drew Light pretty well, ne? xD
Well, you shouldn’t break your head to make an entry for SZS xD It is quite hard to say a lot about it I don’t watch Doujin Work, but if it works much better for you I say go for it ^^
Hooray for dancin bloomers! (^_______^ )
Although I still watch both so hooray both?
Familiar faces…
Familiar places…
But…
…why?

Quote from PS2 game R-Type Final Stage F-B
Thought it would fit my current impression of the series well XD
*dies* Dragonball Z reference |D
That looks like a good series to watch…though I’d miss about 99.99% of the references…
Whoo for Doujin Work! ^_^
zentsubou is similar to lucky star and pani poni dash –> use of anime reference (in a way very similar to pani poni)
where doujin its all imagination…
zentsubou will run out sooner or later like pani poni dash whereas dougin works will not( the live of otaku~)
hahaha i lol’ed at the fusion dance ^____^;;; were those characters really trying to do the fusiondance or were they just doing something that looks like the fusiondance? :O:O
@ Hopey: Minus the facial features, they captured his essence quite well.
And =O you should watch Doujin Work, it’s funny. Plus the episodes are only 15 minutes each, so it’s not that much of a time sink.
@ Servbot: Dancing bloomers? You mean that thing that follows Tsuyuri around and appears at the beginning of the ED?
@ Nightingale: Haha, a very fitting quote. Although I have to admit it’s not all too familiar for me.
@ TheChichiSlaughterHouse: It’s a great series, even if you don’t catch the references, it’s brilliant. Moe hikikokmori is moeeeeeeeee.
@ MushroomMan: Very similar to PPD, especially having been done by the same production company. Lucky Star’s references are actually a lot easier to catch. Uh, mainly because 70% of them are Haruhi throwbacks…but, yea.
@ twsl: They were actually doing the fusion dance, I lol’d hard.
@Mushroom Man
Really now? Is there any other joke in DW than, “ZOMG! I’m drawing pr0n! This is so embarassing!!! But I’m a lazy, no-talent whore so I’ll do it anyway.”
What I’m loving in Zetsubou Sensei is the sardonic social commentary. Illegal aliens, culture shock, pedophilia… The absurdity of the material really suits Shinbo, unlike PPD, Negima!, et.al. (which were supposed to be slice-of-life or straight comedies)
Better fanservice, too. (Funny that a show about H doujin is pretty much pantsu-less.)
(BTW, Meru-chan has been in class since episode 1)
And yeah, I know it’s a sadistic bitch to blog. That’s why I voted for it. So is anyone else writing about it?
I think Totali of Subculture and Leon from Kita ze Inbou are the only ones attempting it on an episodic basis.
Zetsubo Sensei isn’t really a show meant for discussion, you just have to watch it and take in the sheer awesomeness, and then maybe post the references you found on /a/. I realized how futile it was trying to summarize it once I gave it a shot.
Episode 04 has 100% more karaoke!
