Death Note 37 [END]

Manly tears or MANLIEST tears?

NOT AS PLANNED!

Why must you toy with us Madhouse? On one hand I’m really disappointed that they didn’t animate swimming lessons and opted to give Light a rather pitiable death. But I have to admit, it worked. I lost the impression that Light was a figure of justice a long time ago, but even so, this episode made me feel sorry for him…

Episode Rating: 9/10

Mikami’s watch marks 40 seconds since he wrote the first name, yet everyone around them stands alive and well. Mikami and Light, who just announced his victory to Near, are left speechless as Giovanni and Lester handcuff Mikami and hand the ‘death note’ over to Near.

Near seems to be the only one who is not surprised that they’re still alive, but calmly reminds everyone that they were never in danger of dying. Just as he explained, Near examines the death note to find the names of the four members of the SPK and the names of L’s investigation team, minus Yagami Light, kira.

Light tries to talk his way out of the situation, saying that it’s odd that everyone is still alive after having their names written down in the death note and that it’s all a set up by Near to frame him.

But it’s on use, Near has him trapped, and reveals the truth behind the unfolding of events. The ‘death note’ that Mikami was using moments ago was a fake, planted by Near himself. To prove it, Near pulls out the real death note, unmistakably the real one as he greets Ryuk, it’s original shinigami owner.

But Light is still confused, after having gone to great lengths to assure that Mikami only used the real one for this day. However, that wasn’t the case, as Near shows Light the cause of his undoing, a single line in the real death note: Takada’s suicide. The day that Takada was kidnapped, Mikami went against his instructions and used the real death note. Having been told that Light would be in a position where he wouldn’t be able to judge anyone, Mikami took it upon himself to kill Takada before Mello could use her.

But Mikami’s good intentions backfired, he broke his regular routine and went to the bank where the death note was being held in a safety deposit box. With Giovanni on his tail and Mikami’s immediate change in behavior after Takada’s kidnapping led Near to the conclusion that Mikami’s note might be a fake, even more so since his use of it was so blatant in public.

Of course, such a conclusion would have been impossible without Mello’s intervention. Had things gone on without Mello’s interference, Near wouldn’t have seen through Light’s fake and would have surely lost. Near admits that individually, neither Mello nor himself are a match for L, but their combined actions managed to build a concrete case against kira, the kira that L couldn’t beat.

At this point, Light is trapped, with nothing left to do, he confesses. He admits he’s Kira, but asks them what they will do next. The world has come to see Kira as justice, for them to arrest Kira would throw the world he’s built into anarchy. Before him, the world was a breeding ground for crime and war, in the years of Kira’s rise, all that has disappeared. Light asks Near if returning the world to the way it was before is justice or whether Near is only doing this to avenge L, to prove his superiority in this little game of theirs.

Near can say nothing against Light’s argument, justice is an objective concept, what might appear just to some may not to others. But he is certain of one thing, that Light, Kira, is nothing more than a murderer, no different than any serial killer in the past, and the death note is no tool of justice, it is nothing but a weapon, the worst that mankind has ever seen.

In a last ditch effort, Light plans to use the piece of the death note in his watch to kill Near, then somehow convince everybody else that it was a set up. How he managed to get his pen out so fast, I have no idea. But Matsuda is faster, he draws his gun and shoots Light’s hand. Light pleads with Matsuda to kill Near in the name of justice, but Light has gone beyond the bounds of evil, even Matsuda knows this. He shoots Light a couple more times and moves in for the headshot, but is stopped by Aizawa and the rest of them before he makes that mistake.

All this time, Mikami has been under Near’s influence, but to be able to control someone using the death note means that their death is inevitable. So Mikami somehow explodes into a mess of blood, I really have no clue what the hell he did, but whatever it was, it was pretty gory.

With everyone distracted by Mikami exploding into a fury of blood and guts, Light escapes from the warehouse and makes a run for it. With no pieces of the death note left, Near assures everyone that he’s harmless at this point and there’s no need to be hasty in apprehending him.

Light’s life flashes before his eyes along the sunlit path, the bleak days of his high school life before he was cursed with the death note seem like a far off time compared to what he’s become. To further illustrate that point, an afterimage of his young and naively aspirational self passes by him.

And so the series comes full circle, what began with Ryuk giving Light the death note and the power to create a new world, ends with Ryuk taking away that very power along with his life. This should come as no surprise though, Ryuk warned Light sometime in the first few episodes that Light’s name would find itself into his death note.

Light collapses in a nearby warehouse, feeling the surge of pain in his chest that signals the inevitable fate that he passed down onto so many others before. And so, bathed in the sunset’s crimson glow, Light’s life comes to an end.

Thoughts

After typing out that summary, I’m feeling more content with the ending. Sure it was different from the manga’s ending, but the only reason I was anticipating that so much was because of a 4chan meme, and to label a series a failure just because it didn’t deliver on that doesn’t seem fair. Sure it would have been nice to see Light struggle like a pathetic worm as karma comes back to slap him in the face, but this episode made me feel sorry for him and I was glad to see him die such a peacefully serene death.

I’m also pleased with the way they explained Near’s victory. It was a little shallow compared to the complex build ups of the past, the crux of the plan revolving around Mikami’s fatal mistake, but Near admitted himself that it was his loss up to that point. Contrast to the WTF H4X Near that magically picked out Mikami, this time he was humble in his acceptance that he was indeed inferior to Light and L, but through circumstance was able to surpass them both. Plus, he’s only a kid, by the time he reaches Light’s age, he’ll probably be more powerful than L and Light were.

The character that surprised me the most in all of this was Matsuda, he was the one who had the most faith in Light. Aizawa and his buddy, L, Near, the SPK, they all believed with certainty that Light was Kira, but Matsuda chose to put his faith in the idealistic boy that Light once was. So it was shocking to see that he was the one to pull a gun and stop Light’s last ditch attempt. While the others were in a complete state of shock, Matsuda didn’t hesitate for a second, even though it was obvious how painful it was for him to do so.

As for Light…oh how the mighty have fallen. Even prior to being exposed, his actions were far too cocky. Not being able to hold in his laughter as he stood before Near? Wth. This from the Light that meticulously planned out every single move when he battled L to make sure no gaps were left?

His breakdown after Matsuda shot him up and he was left powerless was pitiful. To see the self proclaimed god of the new world squirm around begging for help was pathetic. As a comparison, in the manga he was much more defiant, he fought down to his last breath.

Seeing Light so uncharacteristically weak was awkward after being exposed to nothing but a murderous beast throughout the rest of the anime. But both the anime and manga ending were good in their own respects. The manga ending made no mistake in identifying Light as the bad guy and his death was seen as his the prevailing of justice. While that sense was still apparent in the anime, Light wasn’t made out to be such a monster in the end, and while we know he’s evil, it was still sort of painful to see him crash and burn.

This screencap caused a bit of an uproar on 4chan, as many anons started hailing L’s return from the dead. I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s just his spirit or ghost that symbolizes his eventual triumph over Light through his successors. Either that or Light really is gay and the last thing he could think of before his death was his one true love XD

Speaking of one true loves, DO IT MISA. JUMP!

Death Note has been quite a ride, it’s come a long way from its humble beginnings. What started with the plight of a impressionable young teen who finds a way to deliver what he believed was true justice ended up telling the story of the rise and fall of an entire new world and its god.

As for deep analysis into religious and philosophical references, I’ll leave that to someone else. They’re surely there and have a multitude of points and counterpoints to debate over, but I’m neither bored enough nor religious enough to delve any deeper. Death Note wasn’t as blatant with references as, say, Evangelion, but it would still be fun to see the amount of flaming that would come from statements like: “Light is the metaphorical incarnation of Jesus”. I have faith that arguments like these will pop up, and I will stand from the sidelines and laugh as religious and philosophical sects tear each other apart.

The consistency of Death Note wasn’t perfect by any means, the quality drastically fell after the end of the first arc and L’s death, but I’m definitely not regretting sticking with it until the end. What initially drew me in was the great logic displayed by both Light and L, and the mental fencing match they went through. My attention was sort of lost through the Yotsuba arc when non-kira Light was introduced, but then sprang back with JUST AS PLANNED. Finally, the Near and Mello arc, which had its ups and downs but in the end proved to be a decent way to conclude the series.

There’s still an empty feeling that comes from having animated swimming lessons snatched away, but the ending wasn’t so horrible an adaptation that it ruined the entire series. (Plus, there’s probably enough parts to make a swimming lessons .gif anyways)

It’s been fun blogging Death Note and I’ll surely miss it in my weekly line up. Coming up with crackpot theories for the coming episodes and dodging spoilers the whole way through was fun times, and even though I had almost everything spoiled for me by the end, it still managed to be an interesting series nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who has been reading up until now, hopefully you’ll stick around even with the lack of Death Note posts.

As for everyone who posted spoilers without warnings on blogs, forums, 4chan, etc. Go die in a fire. To those who have been naive enough to read up to this point and haven’t watched the series, please read the following lines and share in my pain:

PENBAR DIES
MISORA DIES
L DIES
WATARI DIES
DAD DIES
REM DIES
MELLO DIES
TAKADA DIES
MIKAMI DIES
KIRA DIES
THE END IS NEAR!

The only real problem I had with the end was the lack of the epilogue with Near as L and Roger as Watari, Near chomping down on a chocolate bar as he played with his toys. The candlelight vigil would have made a great ending for the anime. But I guess now all the incarnations of Death Note are different: manga, live-action movies, and now the anime series.

Besides the swimming lessons, they took out Light’s dying words that made the manga’s ending so powerful. Maybe it was too controversial for a tv broadcast? Oh well, I’m still satisfied with the ending. The animation was pretty epic, at least ^.

  3. on 26 Jun 2007 at 8:23 pmNightingale

    Aww… i miss the swim.

    @ Penguin
It was announced that they are going to making a special episode for that…

Wow, I think the anime made Light death a more memorable one that the manga. In the manga version, Light’s death was rather pathetic. In the anime, he got a fitting death….

  5. on 27 Jun 2007 at 4:57 amPopo

Mikami exploding with blood was because he stabbed himself with a pencil, yep, it seems pencils are deadlier than knives, pens and any other sharp object which can be used for stabbing.

(I can’t believe Madhouse actually created that scene, Mikami’s face freaked me out. WTF was wrong with it?)

I was really dissapointed that we didn’t get any swimming lessons, oh well, pool’s closed.

  6. on 27 Jun 2007 at 12:06 pmShirukii

@ Penguin Truth: Is the manga different enough that you would recommend reading it? Or should I just read the last chapter to see the epilogue and maybe the extra vol 13?

@ Totali: What were Light’s last words o.O Weren’t they just “I don’t want to die”?

    @ Nightingale: Pool’s closed =(

@ Brian Woon: The anime ending made Light look like a hero, while I’m not sure that’s exactly fitting, but it was still pretty awesome.

@ Popo: Wow, where the hell did he stab himself? His aorta? That was a lot of blood.

Pool is indeed closed, but if anyone’s interested, some kind anon managed to piece enough footage together to make a pretty epic swimming lessons gif. If anyone wants it I’ll be glad to upload it.

  7. on 27 Jun 2007 at 2:09 pmPopo

@ Shirukii: I have no idea, it was probably that, or his abdomen.

    FACT:
If you’re emo and feeling really depresses, even stabbing yourself with a pencil will cause your blood to explode out of you.

Hehe, I saw that swimming lesson gif, I laughed until I choked.

  8. on 27 Jun 2007 at 2:20 pmPopo

Oh, and here is an animated gif of Mikami stabbing himself, you can’t see the pencil, but you can sort of tell that it is a pencil by the way he’s holding it (if it was a knife we would’ve seen a bit of it):

    AHHHHHHH! -screams her head off-
God, can I write down all of my thoughts and feelings about this episode in an entry? I don’t think I’ll be able to.

But, wow, so, like, Mikami was under Near’s control? O_O
And I swear I fell in love with that whole symbolic past Light walking past present Light scene.
And OMG, yes, the yaoiness of seeing L before he dies xDD

At least you were able to spoil everyone who hadn’t watched it yet xD How does revenge feel? Empty as the goody-goody stories say?

  10. on 27 Jun 2007 at 11:10 pmShirukii

@ Popo: Thanks for the gif, the first time I watched the episode I had to back up and watch what Mikami did a couple times, because from a passing glance it looked like he just ripped off his thumb or something.

@ Hopey: Stay calm =P You’ll manage to get it all out somehow.

It’s not explicitly stated whether Mikami was under Near’s control or not, but after seeing watching the ending, it seems like the only logical conclusion. For Giovanni to be able to PERFECTLY replicate the death note, let alone in one night, seems unrealistic. After watching the finale, I also read the epilogue chapter of the manga, which also hints that Near was in fact controlling Mikami.

Revenge is…not that great, mostly because there are VERY few people who managed to make it through the anime without reading the manga, so there weren’t many people to spoil =(

    Hmmmmm…… I’m so torn…….

The amount of good DN episodes far outweigh the bad ones, and yet I can’t say I’m happy with it as a whole :P

One thing that was lacking the most (in my humble opinion) was the reaction of the world after Light/Kira’s death……

I mean think about it….a large number of people have embraced Kira’s reign in the six years that Light had the Death Note…….I don’t think their reaction would be “Yay Near, you won! Good for you!” :P

And let’s face it, I didn’t want Near to win lol :P…mostly because of the Mikami hax….that really put a damper on the show for me :(…..If only because the logic and intellectual battles had been so intense up to that point…..even in the Yotsuba arc……

But all in all, great series……I give it an 8/10 overall……great original concept……. I loved Light’s voice acting….. especially in this episode

  12. on 27 Jun 2007 at 11:18 pmWhispered.Hope

    Haha, I’m just so frustrated.

How did DN end in the manga? I really need to get my hands on it xD You and a lot of other people said it happened differently and I’m wondering what exactly was different. I can’t be spoiled anymore xD

Ah, so the goody-goody stories and endings like DN are true and happen xD I can pretend to forget all of DN that I’ve watched, be oblivious to the manga as always and pretend to be spoiled if that’ll help xDD

  13. on 27 Jun 2007 at 11:32 pmSpade

bahh.. i hate to see an anime end =( anyway like ryuk said in the end , (we both killed some boredom).. i guess i also did that
i rate this anime 10/10, i will never forget this anime for the rest of my life xD.. oh well i wonder what’s next to watch ^^ ??

or maybe start to watch death note ep 1 again ? ROFL…

  14. on 28 Jun 2007 at 12:02 amceejay

actually it was sad for me that it ended that way…because i wanted to see if..just what if…light had won…and its sad that it was near that got him and matsuda shot him…i really liked the twisted mind of light…
but if you think about it…HE is playing GOD…people are always and always will be wanting power…and people who believed they are right are in this society just following the norm that they were taught…its like saying…when is it good to kill….where everyone is bound to be siding which he is comfortable with…with all the knowledge and (WISDOM) put into him…

    arigato gozaimasta…DEATHNOTE

  15. on 28 Jun 2007 at 1:15 amShirukii

@ Kanon_fan82: Yea, Near sucks. As for the world after Kira’s death, it reverts back to the way things were before. The history of mankind is filled with fighting, war and crime. Sure Light may have managed to put a stop to it briefly, but the nature of humans isn’t changed so easily, as soon as any disincentive is removed, they’ll just go back to the way they were. Light’s footprint on the world is minuscule compared to the centuries of violent history.

@ Hopey: In the manga Light died a rather pathetic death. He was unwilling to accept his defeat and in his last moments he asked Ryuk to kill everyone, instead Ryuk writes Light’s name and he flails around screaming “I DON’T WANT TO DIE” in the last forty seconds of his life.

@ Spade: But the whole fun in Death Note is not knowing what’s going to happen next. Now that you know the story, it probably won’t be nearly as good =(

@ ceejay: While I don’t necessarily agree with Light’s actions, I completely agree with his statement that the world is filled with scum and the current justice system doesn’t do enough to fight crime. It was sad to see Light die, I was rooting for him the whole way, many people like Light so much and believe so strongly that he should have won, that they stopped watching the anime/reading the manga after L’s death.

    It’s understandable too, Near sucks.

  16. on 28 Jun 2007 at 2:04 amjames

Atleast Light did not die of poison but in the hands of a shinigami. what more can you ask for

  17. on 28 Jun 2007 at 3:51 amSpade

@shirukii , then ill ask ryuk to erase my memory of death note xD
Then watch is again … Hehe

  18. on 28 Jun 2007 at 3:58 amAllisa

Actually, in the manga, I believe his last words were ’shit’, for those of you who didn’t bother reading it but wanted to know.
Maybe it’s just me, but I was appaled with how Light went out at the end of the manga. His intentions were good, but his actions were warped. L, as we learned, had the exact same sense of justice, but he went about it the right way. With the power of concrete evidence. As did Near. Kudos to them. But that isn’t excuse enough for Light to go out that way. It almost seemed as though the author reconsidered those actions and allowed it to go a different way for the anime. Either that or those who produced the anime didn’t have the heart to kill Light off that way. Now that I think about it, actually, it’s a tactical move. More people will be willing to buy an anime with a slightly more fuzzy-happy ending than the manga.

Oh, and Light is not gay. I seriously hope all of you are joking when you say Light had a vision of his ‘lost love,’ L, before he died. L had said it would be regretable if Light were Kira because Light was his first friend. Somewhere deep inside where the true Light dwelt inside the monster that is now Kira, Light knew that L was his first true friend as well. L did not appear as a ghost to be all like ‘Haha, bitch! In your FACE!’ either. Nor did he come back from the dead (regretably). Considering the actual morals behind this story, I’m sure it’s much deeper than that.

I did kinda missed the very end of the manga being cut out of the anime. Especially the Kira worshipers led by, who else, Misa. It was a smart bit of irony there. Even I chuckled at that one. Perhaps (crosses fingers) there will be an anime short featuring the left out scenes. I highly doubt it, considering the last episode did everything but write out “THE END” in big letters after the credits, but here’s to hoping, right?

All in all, I severely enjoyed this anime. I’d probably watch it a hundred more times and still not be sick of it. Oh yeah. And I cried when L died too. See, I can be human.

  19. on 28 Jun 2007 at 1:24 pmAlias

Omg, this episode really is pretty impressive. Frankly, I haven’t seen an anime which had an ending that actually wrapped it up pretty sastifactorily since like….Nanoha? If there’s one thing I learned from japanese stories, or for that matter, any story, actually, is that they are extremely good at starting a story but really bad at wrapping it up. Considering Harry potter is going to end pretty soon, this doesn’t seem very good. Back to the topic at hand, this episode really impressed me. There are only two things which was dissapointing, one being the almost total lack of foresight provided in the last few episodes, and the second being that they didn’t anime the epilogue at the end of the manga.

@W.Hope: The main difference bewteen the endings in the manga and the anime is that Light’s death was alot more pathetic and left out the reminicence scene present in the anime. That and he spent the last fourty seconds of his life begging for it and screaming “I don’t want to die.”

@Shiruki: You mind uploading the gif or at least putting a link to it because I can’t seem to find it.

@Allisa:.Yeah, and then there’s me here HOPING that Kyo will pull of a sequel to Kanon ,which has a one in million chance of happening, mind.

  20. on 28 Jun 2007 at 1:30 pmHKP

Another boring anime/story/whatever ending where the good guys win and order is restored. It would be a change of pace if the bad guys came out on top for once. I was really pulling for light in this one. But if i read the manga or watched the movie i guess it wouldnt have been such a let down. Maybe there will be a season 2 where near becomes the new kira. The kid looks like a wack job to me O_o.

  21. on 28 Jun 2007 at 1:45 pmEuphy

okay.. saw this right when it came out and I am pretty impressed; yet at the same time freaked out by mikami and light’s expressions.. (scary laughter, etc)

I, myself, really rooted for Light .. it would certainly be interesting for him to survive through that all and maybe excape somewhere? XD

As for the ending, i think they shouldve added a twist.. like.. someone else finds a death note or something like that.. poor light went crazy in the membrane

  22. on 28 Jun 2007 at 1:48 pmShirukii

    @ james: Would have been nice if he hadn’t died at all ;_;

@ Spade: Haha, I don’t think the death note has that power =P But by all means, if you think it’d be just as interesting rewatching Death Note, go for it.

@ Allisa: Yea I was kidding about Light being gay, all the jokes about him being gay are propagated by LightXL yaoi fangirls. As for the epilogue, someone mentioned that there’d be an OVA to cover that.

As for the candlelight vigil by the kira worshipers, it wasn’t Misa that was leading them. *SPOILER* Misa kills herself one year after Light’s death, the investigation team told her he died while capturing Kira, so she committed suicide on the anniversary of his death.

@ Alias: Sure, no problem. Learn how to swim.

And yes, anime studios are great at starting a series off, it’s the endings that usually suck.

@ HKP: A sequel is impossible, unfortunately. Read the epilogue to understand why. Near IS a whack job, little kid has h4x written all over him. But I completely agree that we need more anime with the bad guys coming out on top.

@ Euphy: Light lost his sanity a loooooooong time ago, crazy bastard, I still liked him though. Mikami is just…weird. His “SAKUJO SAKUJO SAKUJO SAKUJO SAKUJO…” in episode 36 made me laugh so hard. But I like how they used his over zealous faith in Kira as the source of his downfall, that was a nice touch.

  23. on 28 Jun 2007 at 2:03 pmMax

you i am a little pissed because i was actually a light fan but then they go and kill him off i hope that another death book appears and this time misa would be the one to kill everyone involved in lights death.

  24. on 28 Jun 2007 at 2:14 pmnah

Nooo puede ser el dios ligth muerto noo puedes seer cierto os matare a todos weones maldito near pendejo se mierda ligth i deaht nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  25. on 28 Jun 2007 at 2:22 pmEuphy

@ Max: i dont think misa is smart enough to work her way around the system lol ..

but i really wished there was some sort of twist, knowing that the entire series had corks, turns, betrayals, and twists in it; it makes sense to prevent it from having such a screeching halt

  26. on 28 Jun 2007 at 3:46 pmYuppi

I liked the ending of the anime more than the manga. I only read the ending of the manga since in reading it before i noticed the anime pretty much followed the manga directly, and i’d rather see the scenes with moving, coloured characters. ( I like pretty colours! XD) Though the candlelight vigil was a great way to end the manga, I HATED the swimming lessons. It seemed like such an irrelevant joke as you watched the downfall of “God” to see him shouting “UN,DEUX,TROIS!” and the comments between Roger and Near at the end pretty much put the nail in the coffin for me. But all gripes aside, it was a good ending to one of the best animes I’ve ever seen.

  27. on 28 Jun 2007 at 3:49 pmYuppi

Oh yeah, and WHY ISN’T MISA DEAD YET!? She got the shinigami eyes TWICE which meant she would have to have lived to be over 100 years old to still be alive at the time she is….

  28. on 28 Jun 2007 at 4:12 pmShirukii

@ Max: Wishful thinking =P But kudos for being a Light fan!

@ nah: Babelfish, it does nothinggggg! Translation please?

@ Yuppi: Whaaaa? Swimming lessons is hilarious XD Well, to most people. As for Misa still being alive despite making the shinigami deal twice, it’s because she has Jealous’ and Rem’s life spans. Remember when a shinigami saves a human life, they die and their remaining life span goes to that human. But she became an hero anyways, so I guess it was all for nothing.

Darn it – why does Matsuda have a gun in the first place? I wish Raito could have at least killed Matsuda and Nate…

  33. on 29 Jun 2007 at 5:53 amAlias

@jo:…You do realise that that’s is, if I’m not wrong, the second scene where he was in the spotlight and influenced the plot significantly? I mean, he’s the comic relief sterotype. He’s the person least probable to pull out a gun and start shooting up stuff, but then there he is, taking out a gun at the critical moment and saved the skins of just about everyone present. Twice. Admittedly, they probaly just wanted to give Matsuda a scene where he isn’t a provable goof bag, but heck, it’s good, isn’t it?

  34. on 29 Jun 2007 at 9:42 amsephyr

its such a bad end ligth should at least escape or die as a god, thats the authors mistake, he made a good anime but forgeting some special details and tried to create a whole world only in 37 chapters, thats not enough jaja

okay .. question.. does anyone know the name of that classical music played in episode 32 when light is chatting with takada? its been bothering me (the classical song.. cello or something)

@ Jo & Alias: I agree about Near needing to die, but as Alias said, Matsuda was a hidden plot element. He was often the cause of finding a lead that was needed to push ahead, and in the end was the least likely to stop Light, but the only one not to hesitate to do it.

@ sephyr: Lots of series create worlds in much less than 37 episodes. Admittedly, it may not be enough to create an entirely believable world, I think they did a pretty good job =D

@ Euphy: Yay, a chance to show off my knowledge of classical music. The song playing during the call was the prelude to Bach’s Cello Suite #1 (BWV 1007)

Okay, I just went to the offical Death Note site and it says in the guide for this episode that the thing Mikami stabbed himself was not a pencil, but the pen he used to write the names down, this confuses me on why alot of people said it was a pencil, so, I just went with it, but some said it was a pen, so I went with that too, the reason why I chose to say pencil was because it was more surprising, but, it seems pen is the right name for the object Mikami stabbed himself with.

Of course, where would Mikami get a pencil? He was already holding a pen in his hand, plus, I don’t think he would go searching in his pockets for a pencil, so yeah, the pen makes more sense.

  40. on 01 Jul 2007 at 10:15 amAlias

Yeah, well, the pencil was only visible for a few frams, and it wasn’t very clear either. Besides, pencils and pens basically look the same if you cover up the bottom, and considering the amount of time it was visible, it’s not surprising. Mind you, when I first saw it, I thought he exploded somehow.

Quite frankly, it would be alot better if they added a few episodes to cover in the thoughts of Light, Mello and Near, as well as how Near and Mello worked together behind the scenes. The anime editted alot of the backstage interaction, so when N gave his explanation of how Mello and near working together could surpass L, I was like “Huh?” before I remembered what mello did with the infomation a few episodes ago, though the anime ending was alot better than the one in the manga.

Any chance anyone can identify the song that played during the phone call in episode 32 between Light and Mikami? I’m pretty sure it’s Bach D:

  42. on 02 Jul 2007 at 7:50 pmAS

I finally got a chance to watch the last episode, the last three including episode 37 were pretty intense. It was pretty intense with Mikami dieing in a blood bath. Mikami face was freaky to me in episode 37 when his world collapsed, compared to the past episodes where hes calm and collected. The ending with Light being shot by Matsuda was pretty close to the last name ending, I will have to look up how it ended in the manga. It was funny seeing Ryuk again after so long, but the question on my mind is did Misa jump?

  43. on 03 Jul 2007 at 8:39 pmdragonmunky

If anyone cares to read past 42 entries

    W T F!!!!

    Those F’en retards!!!

If thay are were going to kill Light they just have to kill that bitch (near) and the dutch bages. The ending was good but whould have bin beter if the airplain in the background crashed into the building. I can just imagine it. When the Light exits the building and the others are abaut to fallow but stoped by near for just enugh time for Light to clear a safe distance from the blase rang. Right when the gang of dutch bages are about to live they find themselfes in facing an incoming plain. the plain crashes and to add drama near survives just to have rubel fall and kill her. This would fit rigt in because Light checks the time as if to say he is one (but in this case two) tricks up his sleeve, then it ends like it did.

Maybe have Light wake up in the death god realm and have him lagh as the sckrin gose dark.
    OR
The death note falling with a dark almost black background. when it hits the floor the seting is as normal as a park and a shadow falls over it.

hey Shirukii, i was just browsing the torrents and i found something that says: “[Kuro-Hana - NEET] Death Note – 38″…

do u happen to know anything about that? coz i just wanna make sure its not a joke or a virus or sumthin before i go start downloading it. thanks! :3

  47. on 06 Jul 2007 at 11:13 pmShirukii

There certainly isn’t a 38th episode of Death Note, and Kuro Hana was sent a Cease and Desist by Viz after which they decided to stop subbing it. So a torrent by them, for a non existent episode sounds bogus to me, it’s probably a duckroll.

  48. on 07 Jul 2007 at 3:44 amasuka-chan

oh okay. :D i just thought that it was already the special episode (as mentioned by Nightingale)… anyway, did they already give an exact date for the release of the special episode?

  49. on 07 Jul 2007 at 5:46 pmShirukii

Not that I know of =(

  50. on 08 Jul 2007 at 3:10 pmVadigor

God, I enjoyed this series, I rooted for Light all the way, it’s a pity to see him go like that. (although swimming lessons is even more pitiful) Somehow, Mikami screaming 40 and everyone in the room dieing would have been a classic scene, I can just imagine the look on Near’s face…

Oh dragonmunky, now in English? But a planecrash would definately be a hilarious ending, and I must say that Light ending up in the Shinigami world with a desperate scream fading into nothingness would be a very powerfull ending. Both of your alternative endings would make very ‘epic’ scenes. ^^

On a side-note, someone should make a gif of all the epic-ness we have seen so far: writing, chip-eating, door opening, swimming, … :D

  51. on 08 Jul 2007 at 3:27 pmShirukii

From what I know, there are gifs for:

    - Chip eating
    - PARTY @ MY HOUSE
    - Swimming Lessons
    - Mikami’s extreme writing
    - The warehouse SAKUJOSAKUJOSAKUJOSAKUJO

And possibly a few others I can’t remember at the moment.

i feel really sorry for Light. So sad to see how good intentions in the long run turn into bad intentions. Such a shame that boy died like that. The punishment of vile wicked people was a good thing; problem is he started abusing the power…

  57. on 04 Aug 2007 at 7:39 pmlocki

i just watched death note ep 34-37 today, i kinda lost track when kuro-hana stopped dubbing them…

well, same as the others, i really feel sorry for light, i almost cried on that part when he was screaming for help from anybody…he was looking for takada, misa, and mikami, its just kinda odd that he never thought of his family during those times…i mean, if i remember it right, his mother and sister is still alive right? hehe, anyway…

that’s something i never ever wanna happen to me, i mean, all of your plans have failed, even worse, everyone has turned against you, and you dont have anybody willing to help you up.

anyway, i knew light was going to die in this series, but i kinda hoped, near would suffer the same fate ryuzaki faced.

i wish they ended it in such a way that neither both of them could prove w/o a shadow of a doubt their arguments when they faced each other, and that the only way they could have settled it, i dunno how the author could have done, but anyway, was if near could have found out a secret death note page from light’s watch, and the only way he could have proved that it was indeed a death note page was if he wrote his own name on that note, and the deal could have been, if Near dies, light is Kira, if not, Near and the SPK must stop investigating bec light could probably say he’s so annoyed by Near already that he now has the right to say, you couldnt prove anything, u just wanna make stories to avenge L’s death, go back to ur momma’s womb and cry like a boy you are…hahaha

anyway, im just so pissed that near must die as well…XD i mean, L died, melo died, mikami died, takada died, light died, he should have died as well…kill him!!! hahaha! i wish this series ended that all of them died w/o anyone knowing who the real Kira was…except of course those who knew already, but they already died anyway…>D

anyway, enough of my whining, i must say, im still impressed as to how the series ended. seeing as to how people who followed the anime were severely affected by the way light died, it just shows how good the ending for this series is…but its still lacking something though…hope the director’s cut episode fills up the emptiness in us…^^

  58. on 07 Aug 2007 at 7:28 pmViccaman

Yuppi: Light didn’t actually say that stuff in the story. The “Swimming Lessons” deal is an internet joke.

  59. on 02 Sep 2007 at 5:44 amneogenesis

I’ve searched a song for 3 days and I didn’t find it. That’s why I ask you for help.

In the chapter “Election” (No 32), while Takada and Yagami are in a hotel room talking about Kira and he suddenly phone to Takada. Then, a organ song from bach sounds.

I can’t remember the name of that song but I’m sure I listened it before.

Someone could tell me which is the name of that song?

  60. on 04 Sep 2007 at 3:44 pmneogenesis

    I’ve just found it ^^

    J.S. Bach – Concerto in D minor, BWV596 (after Vivaldi’s Concerto Op. 3/11) – Fuga

    Thanks.

  61. on 04 Sep 2007 at 4:00 pmShirukii

Cool, thanks, I was actually wondering about that song as well, and a few other people asked for it too.

  62. on 01 Oct 2007 at 11:54 amLight

    HAHAHA I’m back I didn’t die ……….j/k

well the ending was a desepointement , me who was a kira supporter , I really didn’t expect such a thing to happen to him
and in the end he was pathetic with his acts
even tho I kinda felt sorry when L died but it was a necessary sacrifice , I was hoping the Kira’d win but he didn’t

well it was a real Great anime that I loved , something different from katana-klashy-swords animes which made it very interesting

  63. on 16 Oct 2007 at 2:12 amNeverwinter

    It sucks!!
I alway expect that Kira could win. He could beat the real L, and, he also is smarter that Near and Mello together… I wanted to see how Light Yagami would do after he beat all his enemies, how could the Kira´s world be? Better than before??
And I got to say that it´s very interesting how Kira and L fought each other, all the strategies, plans and ways to think. Though I didnt like Kira´s plan(to kill L.), I really enjoy in the moment L died, and the demonic smile of Kira…
But in the end, Kira died because of its ambition… it´s kind of sad… doesn´t it???

  64. on 30 Oct 2007 at 4:50 amSharn

    NEAR IS THE WIN.
    so there.
But (call me sick), I laughed when mikami died.
    Ray? Sad
    Naomi? Sad
    Watari? Sad
L? UBER SAD (Arguably the most saddening)
    Rem? Sad
Souchiro? uber sad (but not as sad as L)
Matt? UBER SAD (As sad as mello)
Mello? UBER SAD (As sad as Matt)
    Takada? pfft. Who cares.
Light? even though he was evil, still sad.
    Mikami???
“Oh dear, let us commit suicide. hmm……*PEN STABBY*”
    o.O
I couldn’t help it, so many ways to kill yourself, you stabbed yourself with a pen? Just goes to show, the pen really is mightier than the sword. good one mikami.

  65. on 05 Nov 2007 at 1:19 amshaider

I think Misa committed suicide at the end… i think everyone who used the death note died… Light did that I guess… am i correct?

  66. on 12 Nov 2007 at 2:38 pmgwern

Neverwinter: Kira had to lose in the end. He had just too much arrogance. Think of it as a Greek tragedy – Light’s the protagonist whose fatal flaw of hubris brings him down in the end.

He just made too many mistakes. He responded to L’s challenge; he taunted L by demonstrating he could break into the police’s computers; he refrained from killing his sister; he refused to kill Near in any way as primitive as controlling someone to bomb his building (or have an airplane crash into the appointed meeting spot as someone else has suggested), etc. etc. all to demonstrate his superiority and power.

  67. on 14 Nov 2007 at 4:45 pmdarkness

to clear up a few things…yes, Misa does jump for all those asking, when light dies shes oerwhelmd w/ sorrow and commites on the aniversary of his death

and, incase ur wondering about those 3 seconds you see his sis in a wheel chair, she gets traumatized for life and goes into a state of shock were she no longer responds to anything…

  68. on 21 Nov 2007 at 1:01 pmbjornebarn

Does anyone know what the classical piece of music is called that is played in episode 32, from 4:17 to 5:14?

Here is a recording of it: http://www.speedyshare.com/276362115.html

    thank you!

Thanks for blogging DN all this time! Although I was mostly interested in the screenshots (so I can draw), I had fun reading some of your comments too. They were very analytical but I guess that’s a good thing. You become tired of people who have no other comment about an anime except for ‘that was the best anime I’ve ever seen!’ Good work!

Im saaaaaaaaaad light [ aka kira] died I knew he would get caught but I thouth he would get to go to jail but I NEVER WHANTED TO SEE HIM DIE . but I atlst whanted light [aka kira ] to kill Near I HATE NEAR!!!!!!!!!!

  71. on 04 May 2008 at 7:56 pmRedsand52

Damn… It was a great series.. I love death note… I love it so much… But why did Light have to die? I mean, It kinda made me a little pissy… I just wish that someone (Matsuda? xD) would pick up the death note and carry out Kira’s dream!

  72. on 14 May 2008 at 7:09 amSharn

Ah man. These commentaries were awesome. But I have to say, this episode kinda let me down (I hate abrupt endings. HATE THEM.)
I’m happy Near won though. It couldn’t be any other way.
    But…
    L’s Death? *sob*
    Mello’s Death? *sob*
    EVEN Matt’s Death? *sob*

    HOWEVER:

    Mikami’s Death? I LAUGHED. HARD.
I dunno, MAYBE that’s saying something about me, but I don’t think so, I think it’s just hilarious!
And it brings back a motivational poster I saw once:
Blood: The average Anime characters body contains 46 gallons of it.

WAY TO BLEED YOURSELF TO DEATH MIKAMI :woot:

And hooray for Near! NEAR FTW (and whomever says otherwise, I fart in your general direction!!!)

  73. on 09 Jun 2008 at 10:57 pmqmarx

Light might have been able to dig himself out. Assuming he believes a world where he still lives, and has the potential to again become Kira, is better than one where he is dead…

“Yes! I am Kira… or rather, Kira inhabits this body. I am no human, confined to a single body, nor am I one of those self-styled “gods of death” who are disembodied souls. I am a half-soul, a parasite of the mind.

Do you think it was a coincidence that Light found the Death Note? Of all the people in the world, it was one with both intelligence and useful connections? Of course not! I was very careful when I arranged it for Light to be my new host. Alone, I am stupid. But when I possess a human, I can combine my knowledge with their brain, and create a gestalt greater than the components! Light’s brain gave me the tools I needed to consume the lives of humans without interruption. But the only thing that matched the capacity of his mind was the stubbornness of his subconscious. Did you really think Light was so stupid as to intentionally leave clues for his opponent? To taunt L with his actions? Of course not! He was fighting my influence from the start, influencing my reactions even as I controlled his. When I found it impossible for him to kill L, I was forced to take action myself and control the Shinigami, destroying it in the process. Light’s struggle, though admirable, was ultimately futile.

There was, I admit, a period when I was forced to abandon my host, but that was soon resolved. Touching a note when my temporary host dies is one way I can be transferred. Near, I can see what you have done. Although you are not yet suitable, I can see your promise as a host. At such a young age, your intelligence is already obvious. After a few more years of experience and training you will exceed even Light. And you’ve already taken the first step. Did you honestly think that I hadn’t expected for you to write down Mikami’s name? Did you really think using the note was an action you could take without repercussions?

Just as before, I will be force to abandon this vessel. With the assistance of this wonderful brain I have made contingencies. And now, I leave you with a sadistic choice! Killing Light would eliminate one host, but would also leave you without the mind that created these plans.

Why am I telling you this? Because now that you have this knowledge, I win either way. Either you knowingly kill an innocent man, giving me an opening into your soul, or you leave a potential host for me.

It is irritating to leave after having fed so long… As for this body, and the note, I discard them both!”

There. Light is now Good!Light, with potential to become Kira!Light, Near is suitably freaked out, the legend of Kira will continue even if Light is killed, since they can’t be certain this is all a tissue of lies, and there’s quite a bit of truth in the long monologue, which Near will discover when he tries to verify any of it. If nothing else, it’s a mean-spirited way to screw with Near’s mind even after death, and I doubt Light would give up the chance.

  74. on 09 Jun 2008 at 10:58 pmqmarx

Oh, and Ryuk is free from Light, which means he won’t get bored and kill Light in prison. Always a good angle to cover.

  75. on 10 Jun 2008 at 12:04 pmfullmetal

well i didnt read all 74 posts u people made… but isnt the world gona be kinda fucked now?

  76. on 06 Jul 2008 at 6:04 amNear

Light, in a way, wasn’t a bad character. He was a rival whose good intentions turned to bad when he himself fought for power. He thought he was a god but in the end, all he really was was one of us. A greedy, selfish, egotistical human being who only thirsts for power every moment they walk the earth.

I’m not saying stuff like, “Oh! Mellow sucks!! He didn’t do anything!” or “Screw LIGHT he was just the crazy main character!” or anything like that. I only think that through both endings, the manga & the anime, we can see the different points of how the world was affected by Light/Kira’s death.

    also,
    I PWN ALL OF YOU
    except Mikami
    he is pwned by pens.

  77. on 06 Jul 2008 at 6:19 pmWhyDeathnote

I might be the only one but i kind of wish Light was the True victor but something happened to him and he was jsut like well i got bored so i let you win and made some crazy explanation as to how he knew all this would of happened as he was dieing. Just to show he was more ownage than anyone in that room

  78. on 01 Oct 2008 at 5:49 pmPM

I think the world will still be significantly changed after Kira’s “death”.
I mean, how big was the movement supporting Kira?
How many will treat him as a martyr?
After a thousand years, will he still be revered as a Jesus type figure? Even if Light dies and the last notebook and it’s scraps are destroyed, the legacy will live on… People might even try to be good just in case another Kira appears in the future…. Kira/Light won. The new world was created…

  79. on 18 Oct 2008 at 9:34 pmqmarx

According to the manga, Crime surged to above-kira levels after Light’s death, but eventually stabilized at the normal rate.

    So, basically, Kira lost

  80. on 12 May 2009 at 10:18 pmKira

light is the true victor of the world and btw light won after is death and there are or more kira’s

ryuk got high by apples thats why he killed light
