Death Note 25
April 4th, 2007 by Shirukii

Wow, this episode was of incomprehensible amounts of win. The surprisingly artistic approach, the mindgames, the WHOAMG plot twist, everything was amazingly done. Although, I have my doubts as to the reality of the situation, something tells me that there’s much more going on in this episode than meets the eye.
Episode Rating 10/10

The beginning of the episode left me really confused, for a minute I thought I was watching Monster all over again. In terms of content, it seems to be a flashback of sorts to L’s past, from the looks of it, Watari has been with him ever since he was a child.
Back in the present there’s a brief scene between L and Watari in which he asks his young master what he plans on doing now. This is the basis for much of my suspicion, more on this later in the Thoughts section.
In the common area of investigation headquarters, L bombards Rem with questions pertaining to the nature and use of the death notes, all of which he responds to with feigned ignorance.

In the outside world, Light has charged the duty of judging criminals to Misa, being unable to himself in his current situation. In an uncharacteristically artistic scene, we see Misa prancing around town clad in full gothic lolita style, putting those shinigami eyes to great use. A fitting insert song as well.
Back with the investigation team, they are in chaos as the killings have started again, despite Higuchi’s death. L starts up his reasoning process and notes that the killings coincide with Misa’s release, despite them having been proven seemingly innocent. However, he is suspicious of the all too convenient 13 day rule, if not for which, Misa would be the prime suspect as kira.

And all of a sudden Rem has an epiphany, it’s all according to Light’s plan. With L coming dangerously close to convicting Misa, Light is confident that Rem will intervene and kill L before the conclusion can be made. This will get rid of L and Rem while simultaneously increasing Misa’s life span, all to the benefit of Light.

The next scenes were really perplexing and can be interpreted in several ways. L stands on the rooftop amidst the rain and laments on the sound of church bells and the sad fate thrust upon Light and himself, destined for lives of deceit and the suffering of the resulting loneliness. The two come in from the rain and proceed to dry each other off. Suddenly L gets a call with some seemingly groundbreaking news, the two return to the common room.
Apparently L’s been working on a plan that would solve the case in one fell swoop, he plans on testing the condition that holds him back from convicting Misa and Light as the real kiras, the 13 day rule. He’s seeking international approval to make a death row prisoner write the name of another prisoner in the death note and see if he is alive after 13 days.

Being the final piece of the puzzle against Misa, Rem goes berserk, he runs off and kills Watari and shortly after, L himself. As L breathes his final breaths of life, Light stands over him with a devious smile on his face. Light turns on the acting and cries out to Rem for an explanation, he runs off to find her remains and pockets the death note she left behind. Light vows revenge and walks away, only to bask in the glory of having cleared all his obstacles in one swift move, he is now the god of this new world.
Thoughts
Wow, what an insanely good episode, the return of kira Light sure stirred things up quite a bit (R.I.P. non-kira-Light, much to the dismay of Hopey T_T). They sure packed a lot of plot into this short 22 minute span, the most notable development being the death of L. However! I will now explain why I think this is simply a feint tactic, hiding a much deeper truth in its shadow.
WARNING! THE FOLLOWING IS A THEORY THAT MAY BE A SPOILER IF PROVEN CORRECT!
Ok, so here’s why I don’t think L is actually dead…first of all, there are still ten episodes remaining, the height of the action in Death Note is the constant intellectual battle that rages on between Light and L, to think they could produce any sort of decent ending after resolving it so early is unfathomable.

What’s with the scene that seemed like it was out of a Light X L yaoi fanfic >_>
The rest of my argument lies in L’s demeanor during this specific episode, and the short scene with Watari at the beginning of the episode. Although short, this scene tells us quite a bit, if you think in the proper context. Watari asked L what he plans on doing now, in a rather solemn tone. To me, this suggests that L has hooked onto a clue that could solve the case, or that he has developed one of his theories to a point where he could prove it. I’m betting on the latter, I think that L has come to within an inch of certainty that Light is kira and Misa is the second kira, but needs to clear the 13 day condition, or catch them in the act. However, there’s a catch, the solemn, almost depressing, tone in Watari’s voice suggests that certain sacrifices must be made in order to reach the outcome.
As for L’s behaviour throughout the episode, it was as if he was knowingly living the last days of his life. He goes full on emo, standing outside in the rain and claiming to hear church bells (funeral bells?). The other scene that convinces me that he’s up to something is the rain scene with Light. In it, L profiles Light almost perfectly and asks him a direct question: “Since you were born, have you ever told the truth, even once?”. Almost as if L were giving Light one more chance to turn himself in. Afterwards, during the incredibly yaoi drying scene, L reiterates how sad he is, though he may see things turning out for the best.
This all points to one conclusion in my mind, that all of this is a huge set up to give Light a false sense of victory and security. And if I’m right, Light is screwed, as his final gesture to L was a definite sign of his role.

However, this is where my theory begins to fall apart. L was killed by Rem, by a genuine death note, there’s no escaping this truth. That means that either L has found a loophole in the death note (unlikely) OR has entrusted someone else to defeating Light after his passing. In either case, it’ll be a hard path to follow, if L somehow defeated the death note (ie. death itself) I can think of very few things that would rationalize it without opening up potential plot holes. On the other hand, if L has a successor charged with convicting Light, the writers will have to develop an entirely new character that can stand up to Light, who has achieved god status, not an easy task.
But no matter, I have faith in the script writers, as long as they keep following the apparent awesomeness that is the source manga, it will probably turn out for the best. Can’t wait until next week when I see if this crackpot theory still holds up, or an equally interesting scenario.

Despite how awesome it would be if the above theory was correct, I still have to hand it to Light, to plan things this far in advance, freaking brilliant. I often liken these types of shows to games of chess, where it’s a question of who thinks of the most coherent moves in advance to back his opponent into the metaphorical checkmate. And Light did just that, using every single resource at his disposal he thoroughly profiled the players and manipulated their actions with pinpoint precision. However, if L pulls an easter weekend Reincarnation (LOL, c wut I did thar) and catches Light red handed, I will have to proclaim Light completely and utterly owned. Then again, Light’s not one to begin slipping up in the absence of a threatening force. X_X So many possibilities as to how this will all unfold, blasted one week intervals between episodes…
EDIT* A regular commenter (Kanon_fan82) made an excellent point that I think is worth mentioning. The yaoi-esque scene where L washes Light’s feet parallels the washing of the feet in the bible. It’s been a loooong time since I’ve read any of it, but to my understanding the washing of the feet occurred during the Last Supper. Jesus washed the feet of each of his disciples if I’m not mistaken, would this imply that L is the holy figure of justice in this case? It’s also no coincidence that this scene as well as the “death” of L occur this week, just before the Easter weekend, the next episode is even named “Reincarnation”, further evidence of biblical allusion. If all this is true, I applaud the animators for working it in, AND it further reinforces my theory that L is in fact not dead ^^
On an unrelated note, were they saving up animation budget for this episode? The quality shot up quite a bit. Sure there were still some scenes that were massively over saturated with colors or light, but the quality in general definitely felt like a step up from what we’ve been seeing of late.
Aside: Where are all the subs for the new spring series T_T I’ve only seen StrikerS so far, I want moarrrr.

“were they saving up animation budget for this episode? The quality shot up quite a bit”
I believe they were, or rather, they’d better have, because this is (IMO, but most people agree) the best point of Death Note. I also won’t say whether you’re right or wrong, but you’re pretty good at putting the things together and coming up with prediction that makes sense.
That Yaoi scene was odd.
Goodbye, L. It was fun having you around. Or, maybe we can still have some intellectual fun in the coming episodes. Your theories are well thought out. I think you will like how things turn out in the end.
For a little spoiler watch the opening credits for a “few” hints at whats coming up.
It may be the Religious Studies major coming out in me but…….
the footwashing scene seems (at least IMO) to be an allusion to either Luke 7:36-50 OR John 13:6-11….although I would assume it’s the former because of the water dripping from L’s hair…….
Traditionally, the Biblical passage from Luke…which is one of the points of contact between the three Synoptic Gospels….. has been interpreted two ways:
the literal: The woman is preparing Jesus’ body for burial and mourning his imminent death
the symbolic: Asking for forgivness of her sins…showing her repentance by doing a menial/servant-like task….Also, it symbolizes her recognition that Jesus is invested with the authority to forvgive sins/wrong-doing……..
I think L is either asking forgiveness for falsely accusing Light, or washing his feet in recognition of Light’s death-god status……
But ya……that’s my take on it……..Awesome episode on SOOOOOO many levels :)
P.S. If indeed the footwashing scene is meant to be a biblical allusion….it’s somewhat ironic that it aired this week lol :)….right now, Holy Week is being celebrated by many Christian communities in the build up towards Easter this Sunday lol ;)………
P.P.S.the footwashing scene is different in John’s gospel and carries a different message…..but it’s still interesting to look at if you’re interested…….
I
@ L Lawliet: Thanks XD I can see why people think this is the best part of Death Note, it’s awesome @_@
@ Danny Choo: Very. Very weird.
@ Foshi: If only I could reason like Light, that would be awesome. As for more spoilers, I’ll try to avoid them, since I know a few crucial ones already =(
@ Kanon_fan82: Whoa, that’s an excellent point. The foot washing scene that mirrors that of the Bible and the allusion to Easter, which is this weekend. This is all too much to simply be coincidence, the next episode is even named reincarnation.
I don’t have time to actually verify and compare the episode to the biblical passages, but I thought your point was worth a mention in the post, I added an edit mentioning it =D
Mou, thanks for the R.I.P. for non-Kira Light, Ruki -sniffles-
First I have to completely laugh at loud about your first take on the whole L drying Light’s feet scene. I laughed so hard, for I thought the same exact thing. For your second take on the scene, I gotta hand it to you and Kanon for pointing out that bible thing. I’m not big on religion despite ‘being’ Catholic/Christian, so that’s a really nice point. They really timed things perfectly with the whole ‘Reincarnation’ thing, too and next week and whoo.
And, OMFG, L can’t die!! Seriously, there’s like 12 episodes left! We can’t be L-less! Who will defy the evil Kira-Light?! I like your theory, though you did point out its flaws. Murr, I guess we’ll have to see next episode, ne?
Aside: Which subs for series are you waiting for? xD
@ Shirukii:
Thanks! :)….I just finished the last essay of my undergraduate career…..yay :)…..Figured I’d comment on here one last time before I go to sleep :)
To save you the trouble of comparing the passages–
in Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3-10
the woman washes Jesus’ feet right before the Passion narrative starts……..that’s the literal interpretation I mentioned in my other post…….
Luke’s gospel is the only one that calls particular attention to the fact that the woman is sinful, and is seeking forgiveness…..hence, the symbolic interpretation
In John’s version of the footwashing (13:1-21) it does take place at the Last Supper & between the disciples (as you mentioned)….
Peter does not want his feet to be washed, and Jesus insists that he is setting an example for them all….
Plus, check out this line that I just noticed now:
“You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand” (v. 8)
Your crack-pot theory doesn’t seem so far fetched ;)…..It’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds……
P.S. Happy Easter everyone & good luck with any exams! :)
@ Hopey: I’m still baffled at how Light’s two personalities can be sooooo different, non-kira Light was a good balance, but his evil side won out in the end.
I’m also Catholic/Christian, though I’m by no means what you would call devout, Kanon_fan deserves most of the credit here XD
I’m waiting for the subs to all the series listed in my spring preview, so far Hitohira and StrikerS are the only ones with English subs on TT.
L X Light yaoi ftl T_T
@ Kanon_fan82: Congrats on finishing your last undergraduate essay! I’m a university freshman myself so I have a ways to go. Thanks for the references XD I don’t even know if I own a bible.
I doubt my theory will end up coming true to the letter, though some of it seems plausible.
Finals are coming up in a week for me, thanks for the well wishes, same to you if you have any! ^^
I thought non-Kira Light was making an appearance when L died, because Light was so surprised, but I think it was shock that Rem actually killed L than regret or anything xDD A girl can dream, though, and dream I shall! Kira-Light is SO evil, there’s no balance!
Seriously, Kanon should come to my religion class and do my exam or something xDD
Ah, well, Touka Gettan and Claymore are out. I’m waiting for quite a few still myself.
Haha, I swear I’m gonna start liking L x Light now xDD
Well, I already know whats going to happen (having read the manga) but I really like the Biblical take you guys put on this. I never thought of that! Anyway - this was a very sad episode to me, I’m such a sissy I actually cried. ^^;
One of the best anime episodes ever and by far one of the best anime series I have ever seen, if not THE BEST. Well, that’s just an opinion, but I haven’t been noticing any really good anime as of late.
@ Hopey: Feel free to dream on ^^ I’d like to see a second coming of non-kira Light as well, but I don’t see how they’d work it in =(
I just watched Touka Gettan…that was…weird, but from the producers of yamibou, I expect nothing less.
Nuuuu, not another Light X L fangirl T_T run away from the light!
@ Nexcion: It took Kanon_fan’s comment and a rewatching of the scene for me to pick up on the direct correlation.
It really is a great anime, I wouldn’t say the best, but that’s a matter of opinion for each person to develop for themselves.
As for good anime of late, there have been quite a few, depending on your preferred genres.
In the winter season there was Manabi Straight, Nodame Cantabile, Code Geass, Kanon, and of course Death Note.
So far in the spring season, Nanoha StrikerS and Hayate no Gotoku have had promising beginnings, and there’s always KyoAni’s offering, Lucky Star. Check out the numerous spring preview posts in the anime blogging community, mine’s a couple posts back.
@Shirukii - Thank you I’ll keep that in mind. Anyway, part of the reason I haven’t been seeing any “good” anime so far is the fact that I am hundreds of miles away from civilization, being stuck in a really small college in a rural part of the country. And also having to continuosly dedicate my time to countless hours of schoolwork - it gets absolutely tiresome. I don’t go on the internet to often except to watch DN every Wednesday or check my email. I haven’t had so many real-life people recommend any good anime to me as of late. Once I go back home in May, everything should get better though, as I am from a fairly large city where many people love anime. I happened to just stumble upon DN by chance last year! XD
I’ll try some of those series that you’ve mentioned - Kanon seems to have gotten my attention as it seems to be the most blogged and watched of all the anime here. I’ll give that one a shot next.
BTW the town I live in - there are NO places where anime or manga is available. Damn this place!
Thanks for all your help!
@ Nexcion:
That sucks that you don’t have any anime/manga outlets near your college…..You definitely have my sympathies :)
But ya the anime that Shirukii has recommended from the winter season are all solid! :)……..
One thing I should mention about Kanon (2006) though…..Make sure you watch at least two full episodes before deciding whether to continue watching it or not….
There are many people I talked to who dropped the series because they found the beginning either boring, too uneventful, or too confusing……….Trust me, it’s worth it! :)
I don’t wanna say much more than that for fear of hyping up Kanon too much and ruining it for you….
@ Shirukii:
I agree that Death Note is not necessarily THE best anime I have seen….BUT….
It is the first one to concentrate so heavily on the internal dialouge and mental battles between characters….
it’s a very creative concept and it’s what keeps the show interesting…..
It’s also the one factor (I think) that seperates Death Note from the other anime out there this season :)
Please take note that at the end of the Yaoi scene, L actually says something to Light that proves that he knows he doesn’t have a long time ahead. Light seems quite shocked….as if it wasn’t in his plan that L would know he would die really soon.
Jesus said something similar after he washed the feets of his disciples..
The foot cleaning scene doesn’t exist in the manga. It’s just a fanservice for digusting fangirls in the anime… (they still can said thats symbolic thing thats an excuse for me).
@ Nexcion: Ouch, that sounds rough, hopefully you can catch up during your summer break ^^
@ Kanon_fan82: Definitely true, although Death Note isn’t my favourite anime of all time, it does separate itself from the rest by putting so much emphasis into plot elements and character dynamics.
@ Puppy: Yep, that’s what the general consensus seems to be. I’m itching to find out what happens next.
@ Ezdz: lol, well I suppose it’s only fair that fangirls get some service now and then. Compared to the amount of fanservice directed at guys, female oriented fanservice is few and far between.
I suppose they decided to throw it in as a direct reference to Easter then, if it wasn’t in the manga.
..Holy crap.. not taken literally.. lol. But INDEED, using circumstances layed out for both L & Raito, they really played their cards right.
I’m really impressed with the story writers with Easter n all that. [Something that was told over and over in this blog]
“Justice will prevail.” - L
Okay, maybe this is just…wishful thinking, but as someone who’s seen all the eps and hasn’t read ANY of the manga…would it be possible that Rem could only have killed ONE of the two of them before she evaporated? Perhaps Watari being targeted and erasing everything triggered a plan that he and L had developed?
I mean, think about it. L fakes his death and leaves Light in charge. What better way to see what Light’s true intentions are? Besides, the “background” scenes showed more of how Watari was important to L, not so much what happened to L when he was younger. Perhaps that’s the point, that the reason they didn’t go so indepth is because they’re planning on returning L at some point and develop that a little more later.
Again, wishful thinking.
well i love ur theory because i had a similar one. Also i think there may be a chance ur right because i think in the movie there is a scene where L fakes his death and if its the same thing in the aniem then that would mean that he’s not really dead yet……..it showed Rem kill Watari but it didnt show Rem actually killing L.
(lets hope he’s not dead yet)
Ah! Someone finally brought up the point I was considering: that Rem may have only killed Watari and that deleting all the info may have put into affect some sort of plan they had made ahead of time. But who knows? I haven’t read the manga, but I’m sure the writer wouldn’t flinch from killing off a major character.
This much I’m sure of though- we haven’t seen the final results of L’s plans. Even if he is in fact dead, I’m sure there’s something still in the works.
Oh, and as *both* a fangirl and a religious studies major, I loved the ‘foot-washing’ scene! After I wiped up the drool, I immediately thought it might to be a biblical reference. Definitely interesting considering the timing and a brilliant move (in my opinion) on the anime writer’s part if it wasn’t originally in the manga.
@ Rin:
BOO YA Religious Studies!!! :) What year are you in?
Oh, should’ve said ‘former’ Religious Studies major! I graduated last March. I may go for my masters once I return to the States (teaching in Japan right now).
What’s your area of concentration? (Mine was Asian religion, surprise!)
Just a thought I had. Anyone thought about the possibility that Rem made a deal with L and his death was staged possibly Rem’s death as well?
@ Rin:
That’s so awesome! :) Pending exams I should be graduating in June of this year :)
My area of concentration is 2nd Temple Judaism/Early Christianity… though I have taken a number of courses on the Indian sub-continent as well :) (i.e. with a focus on Hinduism & Buddhism)
Wow! You people are all so awesome and have such great theories!
Having read the manga (Don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything) I know what’s going to happen.
But mellovsnear has a good point, in the movie, he did fake his death and that’s how he was able to catch Kira.
However, a lot of the movie was changed and hardly anything was really changed in the anime from the manga.
Hey there…
I was just too lazy to read all comments, so I’m very sorry if this has been said before… !!!
But I have to add to your theory ( THIS COULD BE A SPOILER IF IT TURNS OUT CORRECT but it probably wont)
What if L wrote his own name into the other death note (not in Rem’s) because he knew he would die soon to save him at least some time (if he said he would die in two weeks or something) and faked his death…
He might have done that before Rem wrote down his name and only the first entry of a name takes place. And Rem would have died only after writing Wataris name, because killing him would already be an act of saving Misa, wouldn’t it??
What do you think about it ^^?
(sorry for my bad english ~.~ I’m german)
There was a lot packed into this episode!
I do find it a bit fishy that Rem was able to kill both Watari
and L (it shows Rem writing in her Death Note *after*
Watari keels over) before turning to dust.
But on the subject of Misa and her lifespan, there’s this to consider:
- Jealous kills for her and in turn she inherits both his lifespan
and his Deathnote (M + J)
- She does the eye deal with Rem and has her lifespan cut in 1/2 (M + J/2)
- After regaining her memories of the Deathnote she does the eye deal again with Ryuk ((M + J/2)/2)
- Rem kills for her (whether it was Watari or L, she wrote a name and turned to dust)
So this means that she should inherit Rem’s lifespan *and* Rem’s personal deathnote (the one she used to kill, not the one already in evidence) which Light pocketed at the end of the episode.
Could there be any repercusions from Light taking the third deathnote (that now belongs to Misa)?
Is she in any danger of a shortened lifespan having inherited Rem’s? ((M + J/2)/2)+R

@ Kanon_fan82:
A lot of the other Rel St majors at my school had your concentration. I was actually the only one in my graduating class with an Asian concentration!
Btw, if nothing else happens with L, I am *really* going to miss him!
Sometimes I question the story creators for moves like this, because often times it seems as if the creator has gotten to the point where they had planned to finish the story, but since the story is popular, they get pushed into keeping the story alive, and the overall plot loses something because of it.
Anyone else notice that sometimes?
I think that happens alot, look at Evangelion… 3 endings and a movie and it still doesn’t make sense.
Gainax’s excuse is they always run out of money half way through.
-L
Didn’t Jesus wash Judas’s feet (specifically Judas’s) right before Judas betrayed him?
That’s what I got out of the yaoi scene: It was a religious reference to Jesus (L) washing the feet of Judas (Light) right before he would be betrayed and killed.
… oh well, I’m just hoping there will be a ‘resurrection’ of ‘Jesus’.
This was an AMAZING episode, btw. Artistically brilliant.
how do you think Raito actually felt during the rain/drying off scene?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
The scene with L and Light washing the feet was a bit yaoi-esuqe, but it was definitely seeded from the Bible.
L was like Jesus in this episode in the fact that he probably knew his time was coming. His genius mind probably figured out that in some way he was going to die soon. That’s why he was on the roof, and that’s why he washed Light’s feet, as Jesus broke bread with Judas. Maybe he felt bad that he couldn’t stop Light’s further descent into madness and self-destruction by staving off his attempts to murder him.
In any case, the saddest part for me was seeing L’s rare smile when he was on the roof. Poor L. You’ll be missed!
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Near is like L brother…(if you dunno who Near is then dont read this) well….Near besides his hair he looks like a mini Lawliet with the eyes…and he acts just like him…but the real deal about who Near is is that hes Lawliet’s successor…BUT IF U DIDNT KNOW THIS I HOPE YOU DIDNT READ THIS CUZ IT IS A SPOILER THEN…and i dun want people to read spoilers it ruins there despratley “what happens in the next episode thing”…..and it makes them even more desperate cuz they wanna see how it happens and stuff…..but other than that….MELLO IS SCARY FOR A HUMAN I MEAN FOR PEOPLE WHO WATCHED EPISODE,32 or 31 (i forget) on part 2 Near throws and gives back Mello’s pictures from wammy’s house and Mello caught it fast as possible and also….HE SOMETIMES DRESSES AS IF HE WAS WILLY WONKA AND YOU KNOW WHAT WILLY WONKA =? HE = CHOCOLATE!!!! AND MELLO ACTUALLY EATS WONKA BARS!!!!! IF YOU NOTICED!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH ITS CRAZY!!!!!!!! o_o put that aside…WHO IS MATT????? I THINK ITS SOMEONE MELLO KNOWS REALLY WELL LIKE ITS HIS BEST FRIEND OR SUMTHING….O_O woah i typed alot………………………
OMG FALLACY I WANT TO ADDTO YOUR THEORY AND YEAH IF THAT WER TRUE WOULDNT IT BE MOST LIKELY SINCE HE WOULD FAKE HIS DEATH HED BE IN AT THE VERY END OF DEATH NOTE WHEN LIGHT DIES? (ooops i think thats a spoiler if you havent watched the last part of death note on youtube) o_o anyway i wish he did fake his death….WAIT maybe he did maybe he didnt i dunno but im very close to the end of death note so im guessing ryuzaki is up in the big andy store aka candy shop in the high sky….. ._. errr….that was odd to say…..anyway i wish at the end ryuzaki came back and so did the other common characters from death note…..that would be nice for them to pitch in like that…. o_o .-.
ooooooooops i said andy store O_O i ment candy store…..
When I saw this episode I took L’s action and attitude through the whole episode and thought “Hm…it seems like he knows hes gonna die.” So ive interperted it as L was admitting defeat, though it may just be my opinon.
