Kanon 22

Rejoice Akiko fans, your goddess is not yet dead. Can’t say the same for Nayuki fans though, whose subject of affection is so far into depression that it’d be hard to tell it apart from death. As for Ayu…spoilers in the Thoughts section, should you dare.

Episode Rating: 10/10

The episode starts off with Kyon’ichi and Nayuki being driven to the hospital after being told about Akiko’s accident. Rather inconveniently, they happen to pass by the scene of the accident, leaving them shocked speechless in its aftermath.

At the hospital the doctors tell the two that while they will do their best to save her, in her current condition, Akiko’s life is in danger. Kyon’ichi and Nayuki sit around for a while, waiting for any news and receiving the condolences of the hospital staff and their principal. Eventually the two are told that Akiko’s condition is likely not to change for a while so they should go home for now and stay somewhere where they can be immediately contacted.

At home, Kyon’ichi tries to lighten up the mood, reassuring Nayuki and himself that everything will be fine. However, Nayuki begins to blame herself for her mother’s accident, reasoning that if she hadn’t asked Akiko to buy cake, she never would have gotten hurt. Nayuki passes on dinner and locks herself in her room.

The next few days Kyon’ichi tries his best to keep things going. He goes to school to explain the situation to their teacher and pick up their bags and goes to the hospital to check for any changes in Akiko’s condition. All the while Nayuki stays shut inside her room, refusing to eat or to talk to Kyon’ichi.

A few days later Kyon’ichi comes home to see that Nayuki has eaten a bit and her door is now unlocked. He heads inside to check on Nayuki, whom he finds curled up in a corner in the dark. Having barely said her name, Nayuki coldly tells Kyon’ichi to get out.

With Kyon’ichi refusing to leave her alone, Nayuki begins to explain how Akiko is her only means of avoiding loneliness in life, having never known her father’s face. Kyon’ichi tells her that she’s wrong, that she has her friends at school, she has him. Nayuki dismisses his comfort, Kyon’ichi being the one who has forgotten her for the past seven years, unable to remember the memories they shared, and never returning her letters.

Kyon’ichi apologizes for having lost touch and for the snow bunny, telling her that he remembered what happened seven years ago on his last day of winter break. But it’s too late now, Nayuki starts to cry and screams at Kyon’ichi to get out.

In his room, Kyon’ichi begins to think about all the memories he’s recalled in his short time back in this town. However, as he falls into a deep sleep he’s unable to shake the feeling that there’s still something important that he’s yet to remember.

The following dream sequence is Kyon’ichi’s second last day of winter break, he spends it with Ayu at their newly founded “school” eating taiyaki and talking about the future. As the evening draws to a close Ayu assumes her position atop the first tree branch as Kyon’ichi pesters her to come down and open his gift. Suddenly a gust of wind picks up and causes Ayu to fall off the tree. As she fades from consciousness, lying amidst the crimson stained snow with Kyon’ichi’s voice in the background, the two make one last yubikiri (pinky promise) to one day meet again and play together.

Kyon’ichi wakes up in a panic, grabs Ayu’s stuff and runs out of the house. He bumps into Kitagawa on the way out, Kyon’ichi tells him to take care of Nayuki while he’s out. He spends the rest of the night running around in the mountains in a desperate attempt to find Ayu while a blizzard rages. Reaching the limit of his stamina, Kyon’ichi collapses. Thinking that he might be able to reunite with Ayu like this, he stays down as the snow piles up. Suddenly Makoto appears and huddles up with Kyon’ichi as a bright light wakes him and encompasses the two, leading to a scene where Kyon’ichi gives Ayu his present: the red hair band her spirit had been wearing all along.

Thoughts

Wow, what an amazing episode, truly deserving of the rare 10/10. The dramatic feel of the episode was perfectly conveyed. There were literally no comedic elements in this installment of Kanon, absolutely none. There were a few times where Kyon’ichi tried to use his normal sarcastic demeanor to lighten up the mood, but the way Nayuki coldly rejected him served as a reminder that this is no joking matter. The contrast of the relatively happy episode that preceded it and the lack of comedic relief combined to make this episode a heavy hitter in terms of angst.

While this scene didn’t pack the amount of punch that Akemi’s confession did, it was certainly one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. I got a little misty eyed as Ayu tried to keep her normal cheerful attitude while fighting for consciousness and her final promise with Kyon’ichi T_T

As for the fall itself, this time KyoAni went full out with the dramatic slow motion sequence and black out screen, which suited the scene much better than any “in your face” reality portrayal could. In particular I really liked the change of lighting from the lively orange/yellow sunset glow to the ominous crimson red glare. KyoAni must have been cleverly hoarding animation budget with the odd still shot here and there, and episodes like this are the fruits of their labor.

There was also a lot of development in this episode, character wise. First off we have Kitagawa, who has traditionally been passed off as a typical side character. In this episode and the last it’s been shown how close and reliable a friend to Kyon’ichi he really is. Exemplified by his voluntary participation in the search for Ayu’s missing item and his concern for the Minase family, Kitagawa is as dependable as they come.

On the opposite side of the friendly spectrum lies Nayuki, who was incredibly harsh this episode, but with good reason. Her normally friendly “fight-o!” attitude was completely crushed by Akiko’s accident and we’re shown that beneath her cheery exterior lies a girl who depends on her mom for so much. Having never known her father, Nayuki must have certainly felt abandonment issues, but was always able to survive as long as she had Akiko to support her. To make things worse, Nayuki was coldly rejected by her first love, and then all but forgotten for the following seven years. It’s no surprise that her world comes crashing down around her when the all important pillar of support, Akiko, is lost. Poor girl =(

I feel equal sympathy for Kyon’ichi, who is certainly on stranger to loss. Even if you disregard all the friendships he had to break off in his childhood, the amount of important friends he’s had to watch drift away from him in such a short time would be enough to crush anyone’s spirit. Makoto, Mai, Shiori, and now Akiko and Nayuki, I’m amazed this guy hasn’t made a move for the boxcutters. I find his will to live on admirable and couldn’t help but feel bad for him when he was bluntly reminded that his uplifting sarcastic tone isn’t the magical cure for depression.

Spoiler paragraphs, highlight to read: And so now everything is set up for the grand finale. Kyon’ichi has been isolated from every single person that he has cared for, on the brink of fatal depression. The next episode will mark the beginning of the much alluded to miracle, Akiko will pull through and Kyon’ichi will be reunited with Ayu. From here on there will most likely be a couple OVA type episodes where the rest of the arcs are tied up. Shiori will live, Mai and Sayuri will graduate and Kyon’ichi’s true life with Ayu will begin.

A cheerful and lengthy build up followed by a sudden turn for the worse is the general template for the Kanon arcs. And although I’m not a big fan of “reset” endings (a la Mai HiME), there’s really no other way to conclude Kanon. The theme of this series is not one which deals with loss acceptance and the will to move on, instead the main theme and recurring motif is that of the miracle.

Oh, and sorry Nayu-chan fanboys, however distant the hope of a Nayuki ending was in the past. Her fate is completely sealed with Kyon’ichi abandoning her for Ayu and her passing up the one last shot she had at Kyon’ichi’s heart.

Despite the 26 episode count, by the looks of it next week is the finale to the main story events. Though I would have preferred if KyoAni had cut into the remaining episodes to further flush out the main plot line, any more pure drama episodes would potentially ruin the effect and kill the ending.

*waits anxiously for next Friday*

Gotta love KyoAni’s attention to detail, frostbite ftl D=

Auuuuu~

O_____O (*dropped glasses, then picks up and readjust for clearer view*)

Is… is… is this ur first Kanon 10/10 ever!??? USODA!!!

  2. on 02 Mar 2007 at 11:15 pmAvisch

I agree this episode desrves a 10/10. It had a nice mix of things to it. You cna really tell that Yuuichi feels guilty in this episode.
Makoto’s appearance was a good touch. Also It appears that there is one more episode after the next entitled “end of dreams”.
I feel that episode 21 also deserved a 10/10 because of it’s great revelation moments. But I’m definitely not criticising your review system.

Ah crap, it looks like I might have to hold up an anti-nuke shield for this post lol :P…..

*Warning* Extremely long post ahead lol :)…Probably going to break it in two to avoid a spamming deletion lol :P Sorry for the ranting :P……

    I’m so conflicted :(….

    This episode was really good…..but I don’t know….something about it bugs me………

How do I put this???……..I loved the revelations, the dialouge, the animation……..

but the way the episode was shot (storyboard/camera-wise)….I don’t know…there was a lot of “dead space” (ie. the shots of Yuiichi standing in the hallway of the hospital…

the close-up shot of him running in the blizzard (saying “Ayu” like four times) was about 5 seconds too long, too much of the same angle…..I don’t know it’s hard to explain

it took away from/lacked some of the intensity that was present in other episodes IMO

  4. on 03 Mar 2007 at 1:00 amKanon_fan82

    On the good side though:

Anxsting Nayuki is GREAT :) esp. since you’re half expecting her to forgive Yuiichi after the apology and be all happy again…..

Ayu’s accident is truly heart-breaking…..I love how KyoAni made her eyes look all glazed…along with the light tricks that Shirukii mentioned…..it’s subtle yet effective animation :)

And c’mon……I gotta mention it lol :)…….Makoto appearing briefly just before Yuiichi blacks out=awesomeness! :)

Can’t wait for next week :)

i didnt read this post for fear of spoilers sorry xD

  6. on 03 Mar 2007 at 1:31 amKanon_fan82

@ Danny: No worries buddy, I never saw the original or played the game…..no spoilers involved :)

  7. on 03 Mar 2007 at 2:04 amNightingale

Imo, that dead space in the hospital, is suppose to express: dead space literally.
think about it, dont u feel uneasy watching the scene at that angle? i think its exactly wat KA is trying to point out.

As for U1 screaming for Ayu in blizzard scene, tho i agree its a lil too long, i think it was justified by the fact that, its gives a strong sense of U1 struggling in the middle nowhere, cold-ice cutting his face, total darkness, life-grazing wind, with no one to be seen, and looking for a person that he knows he mite nvr meet again…. etc.

Still rewatching the episode for better grip of thoughts, my page long thoughts and comment will arrive soon =P

  8. on 03 Mar 2007 at 2:14 amShirukii

@ Nightingale: The first 10/10 I gave to an episode I blogged in depth, yes =P You’re not seeing things XD Although I do log all my rankings regardless of whether I blog them or not, episode 9 also got a 10.

@ Avisch: Hmm…only 2 more eps? I could have sworn the original plan was for 26 episodes. Oh well, I’ll take what I can get.

As for my rating system, it’s rare that a series has such consistent quality that I want to give all episodes a 10/10. When something like Kanon comes along I have to lower the technical 10/10 to 9.5/10 just so I have some room to make the episodes that were above and beyond stand out above the rest.

@ Kanon_fan82: I actually thought the same thing about the dead space, usually KyoAni puts plenty of background characters in all their scenes in order to accurately emulate real life.

I also agree that the scene with Kyon’ichi just running was a little dragged out. But overall the scenes worked well together to show how truly desperate he is.

I never thought that Nayuki could be that cold hearted =( Not that she doesn’t have a reason to, but it was still really cruel to Kyon’ichi. Although she may not realize it, life’s not all fun and games for him either.

One thing about Ayu’s accident that I forgot to mention was the moment her eyes glazed over and she said she stopped feeling pain. That was gut wrenchingly sad T_T

    And Makoto ftw!

@ Danny: Haha XD I try my best to mark my spoilers, in the case of Kanon posts I cram all the spoilers into one section and make the font white so you have to highlight it to read. Everything else is safe ^^

  9. on 03 Mar 2007 at 5:22 amNightingale

Hmm…. can someone tell me im not going crazy? I keep rewatching Nayuki’s angst (9 times), chibi-Ayu’s death (17 times), blizzard scene (13 times) over again and again and again….. i… simply cant help it *dies of depression*
    -
I hav to say im usually proud of my stoic emotions and had nvr shed a single tear in anime (AIR could be an exception) but this episode is crammed with absolute heart-tearing despair and i cant stop the sourly pain in my nose…….
    -
    -
    -
    Anyway back on my thoughts,
    1) Super Akiko-san O__O No blood stain at accident scene, and she got away of that mess with ONLY a bandage on her head!!? Comic relief ends here…
    -
    2) It’s nice to see small details that U1 tries his best to take care of Nayuki (blanket, cooking and stuff…. wait a sec U1 can cook!? USODA!!!)
    -
    3) As i hav mentioned above, i think i actually like how that dead space in the hospital worked out. Dead silence hallway with no living ppl walking… kinda reminds me of my past unpleasant visits to the hospital…
    -
    4) Nayuki’s angst. Very painful when Nayuki said “usotsuki.” I think Nayuki in KA is suffering from a depression even worse than she did in the original game script.
    >>> SPOILERS
In the original game script, the depression comes in just as she reaches the peak of her relationship with U1, pretty much like falling down from a cliff. Despair yes, but theres U1.
    >>> /SPOILERS
But in KA’s sequence, not even U1 she consider reliable now. She even fears that U1 will nvr understand her feelings, both her love and her current angst. All she can do is shut herself off from everyone and putting all the blame on herself. The U1 she has now, is no longer the one she can dive into and cry out her feelings, but rather a person who already has someone rooted in his emotions and probably doesn’t even remember what he had done to her 7 years ago. She is suffering way worse than she could have from the original story. Even so, she still hopes U1 to reach her, by the fact that she finally ate some of the food and unlocks the door. One can even consider her bashing of U1 being the opposite meaning that she wants him to stay by her. With all these added up, it makes her one and only true line more heart aching: Usotsuki. T__T
    -
    5) I like how they handled the moonlight. First they have Nayuki speaking out her feelings and fears to U1 in an unclear and uneasy darkness, then when they have the moonlight on her, she finally cracks down and reveals her inner, fragile self under the light, doubling the effect of highlights in her personality.
    -
    6) I simply cant say how much i LOVE and HATE Ayu’s death scene.
    -
    7) As oppose to Akiko’s accident, this is actually where i think the blackout cliche to be appropiate. Note that this is a key moment of U1’s memory, the final piece of the puzzle, the very moment that led to U1’s selective amnesia. By using the blackout, we share a dramatic impression of frozen time frame with U1. Rather than happening so fast u dont have time to react, this is a dead stop moment that keeps on echoeing in U1’s mind over and over again until his mind completely shatters.
    -
    8) As life is leaking away along with her blood, Ayu’s eye loses their lively glaze. Yet she still struggles for the last bit of conscious to keep up with her smile and makes her final promise with U1. Recalling the flashback from Ep1 and Ep19, helpless, for both Ayu and U1 wanting to do something for the other but nothing they can do, all they can do is watch the other suffer right in front of them. Suffer, angst, pain.
Ep1 Ayu: “Dont cry, it’s okay now… because, we’ve promised.”
    No…… T__T
    -
    9) I cant say im exactly pleased with U1 dumping Nayuki like that, but i guess the intense shock from such bloody reality justifies it. And besides, there isn’t really anything he can do for Nayuki at that point, its only gonna make things worse.
    -
    10) For the first time in Kanon, the ever beautifal, peaceful snowfall becomes an enemy. Wiping out all lights of hope, leaving nothing but pain, dread and despair. I loved the coloring of the landscapes when U1 was walking thru the blizzard. Evereything is covered in grey-dark snow. Dead silence, no life, no color, no light, no hope, just the cold-heart sound of the snowstorm. Adding to the remix BGM of Toudokougen, which literally means Plain of the Cold Earth. Electronic remix enhancing the effect of ur own echoe through the silent cold hill - ur all alone.
    -
    11) When Sayuri explained the meaning of Kanon back in ep14, we get the idea of: by repeating a same rythm again and again to form a beautiful, complete theme. Now Kanon works the opposite way on U1. He continuously suffer from loss. First he lost Makoto, he realizes the meaning of losing someone important. Then he almost lost Mai, upon that point he was helpless. Then he lost Shiori, uncertained that if he will ever meet her again. Then he lost Ayu, just as they reach the peak of the climax. Now, he even lost Akiko, whom he respects and cares for, and Nayuki, who is suffering not only from her mother’s incident but also from what U1 had commited 7 years ago. And finally he breaks the seal of his memory and re-learned his first deep lost of Ayu. Series of depressing experience, as if it was a punishment for U1’s choosing to seal away everything, a betrayal of his first promise to Ayu as well as Nayuki’s 7 years ago.
    -
    12) As said above, upon the series of losses, his guilt for what he had commited, and his realization that the very one he loved in fact no longer exist in this world, he reaches his limit and gives up all hope. At that point he believes the only way to redempt his sin and meet Ayu again is his own death. As much as I want to beat him up for being a moron, I couldn’t. All this depression and loss, I wouldn’t even last a second if i were in his shoes.
    -
    13) It kinda touches me that he loves Ayu enough to want to die with her, but still, KONO BAKA!!!! T__T
    -
    14) Makoto, not only serves as a new, single miracle, but also relights U1’s hope, and thus continue forth. Her appearance achieved an excellent turning point of this episode, from losing all hope, to a relightened, strong hope for yet another new miracle. Another notable part, it traces all the way back to the end of ep10, where U1 and Amano (anyone remember her?) talking about a wish for miracle, that this miracle, in a sense has come true. My impression of Makoto is that, she uses her power to save and help U1 as much as she can, a last bit of miracle she can do for U1, for he had cared for Makoto and stayed by her until the very end. Splendid job here KA, splendid indeed.
    -
    15) The preview, reflecting upon all the landmarks of Kanon, covered in dark snow. Along with Ayu’s monologue, wait, and wait, and wait, for someone who she knew isn’t gonna come back again. Yet she still waits. Combining these elements, we are progressing to the final climax of Kanon. I think, this is why the title of the episode is called, the Crimson Finale, the end of the current Kanon, and after that, when Spring arrives, it marks the end of all dreams in Kanon, and thus forth a new beginning, a repetition of life, as well as Kanon itself.
    -
    -
    -
Thus marks the end of my thoughts of this episode.

    @ Shirukii
    1) Interesting that I rate anime almost exactly the same way as u do XD I’ve been refraining myself from giving Kanon 10 10 10 10 no matter how good the episode is in hope of yet another even more sparking brilliant episode. But of course i try to be as objective as i can upon rating + critisizing it =P
    2) hmm… i shall refrain from speaking for Nayuki this time…. not that i dont want to but simply too exhausted from depression….. it aint even matter of who being cold hearted any more…. T__T
    3) i actually missed the glaze the first time (*slaps self*), even though ive been always thinking her eyes look lifeless.

ZOMG i forgot to comment the last scene!!!! OTZ…..
    -
    16) Just to clear up confusion for other readers, the last scene of U1 presenting the gift to Ayu is a reality-denial, self protection memory that U1 made up. It nvr took place in reality. If anyone gonna ask why does present Ayu has it then, well…

    SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER
    =====================
My interpretation is, spirit Ayu is a projection not only from Ayu’s strong yearn for U1, but also from U1’s unconscious yearn for Ayu as well, even though he had sealed everything away in his mind. The present Ayu shares the memory of the time when Ayu and U1 were togather. So in a sense, I believe this is a miracle not from a single person, but belongs only to Ayu and U1. That explains why Ayu has the hairband.
    =====================
    END - OF - SPOILER

    -
P.S. Why didn’t my SPOILER warning show up when i put it around Nayuki’s original game script part in my last post???

    @ Nightingale:

Holy crap dude lol :)…got it all out of your system??? :) j/k….very astute comments…..

  12. on 03 Mar 2007 at 12:55 pmShirukii

@ Nightingale: Only two anime scenes have moved me to tears, Akemi’s confession and Misuzu’s last scene in AIR. T_T

    1) Seems like the blood quota was filled with Sayuri back in episode 14.

    2) H4X *nods*

    3) I can’t really comment much on the ambiance in hospitals, the only times I went I was far too young to remember anything.

    4) I was also confused at Nayuki’s action in the particular scene. She unlocks her door knowing that Kyon’ichi is going to come in, then proceeds to lash out at him? I guess she really did want his comfort, but lost it when he started his speech on how she was not alone.

    5) Hmm…good point, never thought of that one. I’ll have to rewatch this ep after this.

    6) Nothing but love from me for Ayu’s “death” scene. Though it did leave me feeling a little depressed for a while after.

    7) The portrayal Akiko accident was probably used because car accidents are a common occurrence in everyday life, so KyoAni decided to take an in your face approach to its animation. Conversely, it’s not everyday that someone falls out of a tree and ends up so seriously injured. In addition to this, it was done in the context of a dream sequence, so the slow motion and blackout add to the surreal feeling of the accident.

    8) If I get really bored one day, I’m going to backtrack all the way through all of Ayu’s monologues and analyze them in the context of the ending. This will take a massive amount of boredom to actually happen though.

    9) It’s Ayu who he truly loves, I don’t fault him for leaving Nayuki who just brushed him off.

    10) That scene had a tenfold effect for me because the GTA just got hit by a blizzard the day before.

    11) Insightful view, I never considered the possibility that all his pain could be a karma backlash from breaking his promises.

    12) If I were in Kyon’ichi’s place, I would have huddled up in solitude much like Nayuki did. T_T

    13) It seems Tomokazu Sugita’s characters always have near death experiences. (Rin from SHUFFLE and Kyon from SHnY)

    14) I think this part was a bit of artistic license though, I don’t remember Makoto coming back in the game.

    15) My thoughts exactly. Though I still have this weird feeling that the series was supposed to be 26 episodes =\

    16) Ayu’s current projection is definitely a combination of both Ayu and Kyon’ichi’s will to keep their promise, consciously or not.

It’s a painful rating system, when you want to give out perfects but can’t, but it’s the only way to work it (unless you give 11/10s XD)

Ah the time draws near for the Kanon Girls Rankings, I have a feeling people aren’t going to be agreeing with my order XD

I added a spoiler warning for your Nayuki section ^^

    I wish i can… @.@
yet i dont have enough to write for a blog, for 1) i hardly watch more than 1 anime at a time, if i do i wont be able to concentrate my thoughts… that means i will almost have nothing to write about…. 2) me too lazy to do screencaps…. OTZ

    Interesting……

Youtube has started to take down/filter out Kanon episodes …

since when has KyoAni enforced their copyright claim lol????….Anime has got to be one of the most popular genres on Youtube….It seems rather odd…….

I feel sad for those who don’t know how to work bit-torrents:(…..

That being said, it’s really a pain in the but when there’s tracker-problems…..I still haven’t been able to d/l a subbed version of Death Note this week :P

There are only 2 more episodes left. A magazine had stated that the 2006-07 anime would be twice as a long as the 2002 anime. There are only 12 episodes in the 2002 anime plus an OVA. People factored in the OVA and 13×2=26. There are only 2 more episodes titles that can be found.

  16. on 04 Mar 2007 at 8:01 pmShirukii

    @ Nightingale: Unfortunately, I can’t enter S ranks into excel =( I need a numerical value.

And O_O at only watching one series at a time, how do you ever catch up? Spring 2007 is supposed to have like…70 new series, you must have massive backlog.

But yeah, blogging does take quite a bit of concentration and effort. Screencaps being one of the more annoying things that have to be done.

@ Kanon_fan82: Ever since Google’s acquisition of YouTube, copyright infringements have been dealt more harshly with (case and point: Hinano’s rant)

Bittorrent is the life force of any anime fan ^^

Heheh im not too worried about catching up. In fact I dont watch a new anime unless it gives me enough 1) interest + motivation 2) in depth plots that will give me enough thoughts 3) an impression that will make me be certain that i will give an average of 9.3/10 for the entire show, and of course 4) consistency of satisfying all the above, else i drop it or simply pay less thoughts/attention to it. So yea, i have such extremely strict taste in anime that i nvr go after many new anime +__+

    @ Kanon_fan82
Baahh youtube blows, the only reason i go there is for AMV MAD or simply game videos, and even those are being kicked. Soon i will have no reason to visit that hell hole XD

    @ Avich, Shirukii
I guess i was lucky that i got wind of KA’s official info since the beginning, and able to keep track of future episodes title from NewType Megazine that are being discussed back on the chinese forums =P

Ya…. you can’t really blame the Youtube founders though….and anyone who does is just silly lol…… I have six simple words for those that complain:

One point six five BILLION dollars! :)

i nvr really mind them deleting fansubs and stuff, im fully aware about the copyright violation issue. but what im really against is that they even go after fan art. i SERIOUSLY dont see in what way does AMV or MAD violates copyright. by all means, blow that.

    @ Nightingale:

Well said :)….I agree with you……

The reasoning behind Youtube’s new policy though goes (basically) like this:

From a legal stand-point, if you don’t own a legit copy (via purchased DVD) you don’t have the right to copy said material for an AMV….that’s why they are taking them down……

As most ppl use images from fan-subs, they are trying to discourage piracy

After all, fan-subs are technically illegal after licensing (and some would say before-hand, depending on how they understand the creator’s right to distribute the product)……Luckily, I don’t fall into the latter group and therefore have no ethical qualms on this issue :)

Like I was saying before……..I initially got hooked on anime (AIR, Kanon 2006, Melancholy of H.S. etc.) as a result of Youtube…..

and I feel bad for ppl that are just starting to get into it now, only to have Youtube taking it down…..It has to be very discouraging!…..

Hell, I only discovered Bit-torrents like two months ago……it’s the only thing that saved me from getting totally screwed and not being able to watch the end of my favourite shows :)

@Nightingale: It got marked for moderation, I approved =P All is well. On topic, those snow bunnies are awesome! The second one even has the mismatched eyeballs XD Kudos to whoever made those.

=O At having such a selective nature when it comes to anime, there’s a lot out there that initially seems mediocre, but really shine in its better moments. If you want some recommendations, check out my anime database for anything over 9.5/10.

@ Kanon_fan82: It’s actually not the animation companies that are going after them though, it’s TV Tokyo who has for some odd reason begun to attack all things related to their media copyrights.

And what I wouldn’t do for 1.65 bil T_T No matter how many people may sneer at them, anyone would sell out for that amount of money.

It be perfect if the bigger eye is a glass bead~ XD

    >>there’s a lot out there that initially seems mediocre, but really shine in its better moments
well… i simply cant pick up the motivation… even if an anime has certain great highlights in few episodes. I tend to watch the anime as a whole instead of ep by ep, considering that i think a lot about and try to relate some plot or progress from the earlier episodes. So it really kinda ruins the whole feeling for me if some earlier episodes are bad…
And aside from that, for instance, filler type turns me off 1 billion %, Sunrise’s typical handling of plot/relationship/character highlights etc ticks me off 1 billion %. Too much insignificant/unneccessary fanservice, too, turns me off 1 trillion %, a very reason i took off dozens of points upon rating Shakugan no Shana, a supposely good anime which storyline ultimately led me to collect the novel. Highly crazy creative, great art performance yet lack of storyline progress also, turns me off 1 million %, the best example is Negima!? where i gave up ever since ep 11… OTZ
So yea i guess im the type of ppl who looks out for serious entertainment like Asatte no Houkou, Bartender, Death Note and the all time winner animes from KA (the only exception i had was Nanoha, where i really got caught by the fresh magic design and storyline, and just like u, i usually dont bother with “magical girl” genre). I guess its really due to my press for time in the day, since my course work isn’t really allowing me much time to think/write in detail on different anime. So i think enjoying just 1 or 2 at a time was good enough for me.

    @Shirukii

I doubt the main story’s going to end the next episode; there are at least two key scenes that haven’t been animated, and I have too much respect for KyoAni’s story crafting to believe that they are going to be crammed into the same episode as the conclusion.

    SPOILERS

Most significantly, Ayu’s reappearance and disappearance, and her final wish for Yuuichi to forget her is probably the most emotional and dramatic moments in her story - both in the game and in Toei’s Kanon. KyoAni would be mad to cut it, and if they don’t cut it, the intensity of the moment basically demands that the episode end with it. Certainly, it’d be absurd to group it in the same episode as Ayu’s subsequent reappearance and happy resolution.

    END SPOILERS

Just as pertinently, it’d be too much of an 180 degree turnaround from the tone of the previous few episodes for KyoAni to allow all the stories to achieve happy resolutions within the same episode; it’d give the ending a slightly manic touch that’d most likely have audiences rejecting it for the incongruity of its optimistic sappiness.

On a related note, I can’t believe Nayuki’s story is really finished. At this point, I don’t believe Akiko’s recovery could really provide an adequate conclusion to the story - Nayuki’s anger at Yuuichi, and the fundamental shift in their relationship dynamic, essentially demand that Yuuichi and Nayuki come to _some_ sort of understanding regarding where they stand in relation to one another, and Akiko’s recovery in and by itself couldn’t provide that.
