Kanon 21

I hereby revoke all previously made Nayuki complaints @_@

No more complaining here, my inner Nayuki fanboy (though small compared to its Ayu counterpart) has been pleased. Nayuki finally gets a dedicated episode, with Kyon’ichi’s harem disappearing before his very eyes, she’s the only one left to turn to. However, what pleases even more is that it wasn’t a Nayuki episode just for the sake of a Nayuki episode, it was an excellent episode regardless.

*holds up flame shield* But can we get back to Ayu now? kthx ^^

Episode Rating: 9.5/10

Just to scare the Nayu-chan fanboys a little, the episode starts off with a typical Ayu flashback. This reveals Ayu’s second wish on the angel, that just for that day, she wants to go to school with Kyon’ichi. Being winter break and all, they decide to make the clearing their “school”, a school without rules or seifuku, without homework and tests, a school where taiyaki is served everyday and you can come and go as you please. This explains present day Ayu’s description of her school, and the supposed school in the forest from last episode.

Back to the present, Kyon’ichi is feeling depressed due to Ayu’s disappearance, and with no one else to cheer him up, Nayuki steps to the stage…finally. After school Nayuki follows him to the bench where he and Ayu used to meet up and brings him to the cafe to try and cheer him up.

Despite Nayuki’s best efforts, Kyon’ichi ends up worrying about Ayu some more, trying to piece together exactly what happened. Lightening up the mood, Nayuki orders them two strawberry sundaes and hit Kyon’ichi with her trademark “Fight-o! Da yo?”.

Back at home, Kyon’ichi tries to get some more angsting done, but is once again interrupted by Nayuki, who suggests doing their homework together. Even though Nayuki falls asleep halfway through, the plan works like a charm, leaving Kyon’ichi feeling much better (with completed homework as a bonus =O).

Taking a break from all the Nayuki goodness, we’re hit with another Ayu flashback. After spending the day together at their “school”, Ayu finds an empty bottle on their way back and suggests making a time capsule. She drops the angel in, saying that her two wishes have made her happy enough for now and that she’ll leave the last one either for the future, or for someone else who happens to find it and needs a wish. Then the two head back to the shopping district where they part after promising to meet up one last time before Kyon’ichi has to go back home.

The next day, on their way to school, Nayuki notices a broken yuki usagi and stops to fix it. After patching it up, she uses the marble that Kyon’ichi bought her the other day as a replacement for a missing eye. Nayuki then asks Kyon’ichi if snow bunnies remind him of anything from the past, having remembered recently, he tells her about Mai making a field of them because her mom couldn’t make it to the zoo…not exactly the answer Nayuki was looking for.

After school that day, Kyon’ichi recruits Nayuki and Kitagawa to go searching for Ayu’s lost item. Many holes and a broken bucket later, Kitagawa finds it, the time capsule with the Ayu’s angel doll in it. Kyon’ichi gets Nayuki to sew it back together that night, rewarding her with a talk on the balcony where he remembers that her hair used to be in pigtails when they were kids.

The next day is the stage for some of the most shocking events in Kyon’ichi and Nayuki’s lives. It starts off with Nayuki’s alarm clock recording, but done in person! Nayuki actually manages to get up before Kyon’ichi and wake him up with osananajimi moe mode cranked up to max @_@.

Next, while sitting in class, Kyon’ichi suddenly remembers what Nayuki was trying to get out of him the day before. He has a flashback to his last day of winter break, sitting on the bench where he usually meets Ayu, crying. Suddenly Nayuki approaches, holding a yuki usagi that she made, and confesses that she’s always loved Kyon’ichi. Finally noticing that he’s crying, Nayuki approaches him, only to have Kyon’ichi snap and whack the snow bunny out of her hands and break on the ground.

Just as Kyon’ichi snaps out of his flashback, he’s called out along with Nayuki by the teacher and told that Akiko has been involved in a car accident and is being rushed to the hospital.

Thoughts

Whoa. Was the accident in Toei’s version done so bluntly? I was expecting KyoAni to animate it very dramatically, in a slow motion first person view sort of style. But instead they did the whole thing from a third person view in real time. Though I think that they made the right choice, the scene bluntly conveyed a sense of harsh reality. I actually let out an audible “OSHI-” when Akiko got hit.

Spoiler paragraphs, highlight to read: So with this, we’re set up for the grand finale. Ayu has disappeared, Akiko is going to be in a coma for pretty much the rest of the series, and Nayuki will be by her side. This leaves Kyon’ichi completely isolated.

In theory, KyoAni is on track to animate either Nayuki or Ayu’s ending at this point. If I recall correctly, Nayuki’s ending is a result of Kyon’ichi being separated from all the girls and therefore starts to take notice of Nayuki. It’s nudged along by the fact that Akiko isn’t around much and the two have all the alone time they could ever ask for. But realistically, I don’t see this happening, the series has been set up for an Ayu ending ever since the beginning. Also, I don’t think Kyon’ichi manages to find Ayu’s missing item if you take Nayuki’s path, now that he has, I’m pretty convinced that it’ll be an Ayu ending as expected.

And on a less serious note, we can all finally stop whining about Nayuki, myself included. It was really sad to see Nayuki drop so many hints about her love for Kyon’ichi and not be noticed a single time. Kyon’ichi seems really blind to the possibility that Nayuki could ever have romantic feelings for him, or the other way around. Although he does remember her confession at the very end of the episode, it’s a realization that comes too late. With Akiko in the hospital, angsty Nayuki is all we’re going to be seeing for a while. She does eventually manage to pull it together, gathering the courage to stay by her mom, but by then it will be too late.

What I wouldn’t give to be woken up like this

But regardless of the ending, I’m pleased with how Nayuki was handled. This episode shed some light on her true feelings, and the tragedies thereof. Not to mention giving us enough sleepy Nayuki moe mode to last us (or at least me) until the end of the series.

As for Ayu, we’re nearing her conclusion as well. With her missing item found and her past almost fully revealed, all that remains is the finale. It seems like KyoAni will stick to the game ending, unlike Toei, who took some artistic liberties on how everything was resolved. It’s been a while since I’ve watched the old version of Kanon and even longer since I played the game, but I do remember that I liked Toei’s ending more than the game’s ending. Mostly because it was much more dramatic and offered much more closure for Nayuki, but I don’t really remember either in much detail so the remaining episodes will be almost like new material to me =D

And so Nayu-chan fanboys…go away and give me my Ayu back T_T

Agreed. Compared to drama, I think I’d be more shocked by a realistic view, I mean, if they did the cliche blackscreen, then the best i could react is probably “ouch… thaz gonna hurt”, but no, the way KA did it, I was literally frozen until the ED rings up…. that’s when i felt sick and burst out “HOLYSH-”, perhaps its just me since ive witness something like that first hand as a kid… and the memory of the sight at what the victim had become still haunts me even just thinking about it…..
    -
On the other hand, i dont think they can put too much blood or gore for Kanon cuz the idea simply doesn’t fit, I mean they already created a new height in blood spewing for Sayuri…. and I think they gonna be needing some for you-know-who’s-coming-up-next. (Yet I still dont understand why they left out the ketchop for Mai… the floor was supposed to be tainted pure red according to the game… OTZ)

Yup, Nayu-chan finally get the attention/spotlight she deserves, and she’s gonna get a lil more on the next episode to resolved her arc, as well as using her ending as a gateway to Ayu’s finale.

Speaking of Ayu…. I’m feeling rather irritated at ppl who hates her because of lame excuses like she looking like a kid… or she’s half the height of U1 during the kiss… seriously, take a look at a character’s personality and story b4 throwing all the rocks at him/her…. and im rather surprised that this didn’t happen to Nayu-chan…. its all hate-fanboyism…. And sadly enough upon this speech I think im gradually becoming one of them…. (go ahead and shoot me i dont fear haters psh

In any case, I hope the finale pwns everyone’s head like Shiori’s ending and earn Ayu some justice ( poor Mai -___-) Go Ayu, pwn those haters with thy third wish!!! Uguu~ Powa ftw!!!!

this ep inevitably made me a nayuki fanboy X_X

… and so one of the Kanon Flame Wars has finally come to an end a resolution.

    This episode is a perfect 10 :)….And I don’t just say that cause I am a Nayuki fan-boy ;)…..

IMO, KyoAni has acheived a masterpiece for several reasons

    1) Even though this ep. focused mainly on Nayuki, Ayu’s storyline keeps moving along in the background…

    2) When they are digging around to find the doll, you really get a sense that Nayuki, Kitawaga (sp?), and Yuiichi are good friends..it’s just a subtle touch that I really enjoyed :)

    3) Nayuki’s rejection (although predictable) was still heart breaking :(….and it was nice to see Yuiichi actually feel bad about it….it show’s that he’s actually human, and not just a huge pimp lol :P

    4) The car accident scene almost made me cry..simply because it was so realistic in the way ppl experience crashes…it literally left me in a state of OSHI- to quote Nightingale……

Just awesome! The next two episodes are gonna be gut-wrenchers for sure :)

Sorry for the novelette-sized post….but I just had to get this all out of my system! :)

@ Nightingale: I agree with blood and gore not suiting Kanon’s style, even that bit with Sayuri made me cringe, that was a lot of blood. I think they changed their ways though, as neither Mai nor Akiko shed much blood in their respective “death” scenes.

As for fanboy hating, it’s always been that way. I even wrote a post about fanboy hate not too long ago.

    @ Danny: Nuuuuuu! Ayu T_T

@ Ronin: Haha, I don’t think it’s over just yet. Some people are still mad that Nayuki got such little screentime compared to the others.

    @ Kanon_fan82:
    1) Yea, it was a smart move to have some Ayu development in the form of flashbacks.

    2) Nayuki aside, I never got the feeling that Kyon’ichi and Kitagawa were that close, but meh.

    3) I don’t think anyone can blame Kyon’ichi for acting the way he did, given what happened just the day before =(

    4) Yea, totally unexpected that KyoAni would decide to do it that way. Btw, the “OSHI-” was me =P I believe Nightingale was “HOLYSH-” XD

I really can’t wait for the lead up and the finale, mostly because of guaranteed Ayu love =D

As for novelette-sized comments, absolutely no problem ^^ They’re good fun to read.

Yea, same here… hell, this is gonna be two looooong daunting weeks (not to mention more mid-term exams for me…. sigh), dying to find out how to gonna sort out Nayuki the best way possible to sooth the grudge, and of course, how KA is gonna use all that saved budget from each episode up till now, and play out the very line that made me an part time Ayu fan…. her feelings/love for U1 is in no way less than Nayuki…. nope, i will say no more. On a side note i’d luv to see Mai coming bak in her graduation dress +_+ (Mai-san Banzai~)

Kitagawa-kun is the universal nice guy (which also means, universally rejected [by girls] gentleman ^^;)

And finally, Uguu + Nyuu power, Faito!!!

Perhaps it’s because I’m new to anime watching, but I don’t really have animocity towards the other Kanon girls, nor am I exclusively attached to Nayuki…..

she is my favourite of course :) but the beauty of this show is that each character contributes something different to make a whole :)

    @ Shirukii:

Sorry about crediting Nightingale instead of yourself lol ;).

Also… What I meant about Kitawaga-kun is that he is willing to dig up an insane amount of holes just to help out Yuuichi and tries to keep him optimistic…….that’s something real friends do :)

    @ Nightingale:

I definitely 2nd a Mai graduation appearance…..she is so awesome on so many levels :)

  8. on 24 Feb 2007 at 1:55 pmBless

wow this was such a depressing but stellar as always episode

  9. on 24 Feb 2007 at 7:43 pmShirukii

@ Nightingale: I know how you feel, I’ve got midterms looming as well. But that will make Fridays just that much sweeter XD

@ Kanon_fan82: I see where you’re coming from with the Kitagawa remark. They must bond off screen…in the most non-yaoi way possible.

I think we’ll definitely see a wrap up episode with Mai and Sayuri’s graduation.

@ Bless: The depression now makes the ending that much more uplifting. And with KyoAni probably hoarding their budget, not only will the story be great, but the animation will probably be better than ever!

@ Shirukii & Nightingale: (plus any other students who visit this blog)…….

Good luck with midterms and assignments…..As we speak I’m writing a paper on the Hasmonean dynasty :P

this weekend marks the last of school-breaks for a long while :’( …..where did my reading week go????

  11. on 25 Feb 2007 at 7:13 pmShirukii

I got sick over reading week, so I barely went out =( I did end up watching Welcome to the NHK, Ichigo Mashimaro and Ouran though, so it wasn’t a total waste.

Good luck with midterms all! *starts studying for Dynamics midterm*

Hi I’m a first time visitor. I really loved this episode of Kanon (like some other people).

  14. on 26 Feb 2007 at 9:43 pmShirukii

    @ Nightingale: Comp Sci/Comp Eng?

@ Avisch: All episodes of Kanon are great XD This one was great because of Nayuki love.

Thanks for the visit, hope you keep reading ^^

Man! I perfer Kyon’ichi with Mai overall! It sux that her arc was over it was the best one. However, if he doesnt end up with mai (which he wont) i like him with Nayuki. She was my 3rd choice (shiori being 2nd). I honestly dont like ayu. Why i really dont understand myself but i just dont… oh well. Im rooting for Nayuki then!!!

  16. on 26 Feb 2007 at 10:49 pmShirukii

Mai ranks third for me, but her arc was really good. I’m planning on doing a ranking post for the Kanon girls when the series ends, I’m pretty sure I’ll get a lot of hate for the order I’m planning…but we’ll see ^^

On that topic, concerning your comment on the other post

First off, it’s nice to meet another Nemu fan ^^

Secondly, your reaction to Mitsuki was exactly why I felt the inspiration to write the post in the first place =D Opinions are fun!

And lastly, Gift ~ eternal rainbow ~ hadn’t been released at the time. I may do a rewrite one day though, we’ll see.

@ Avisch: Welcome my friend!…..You’re bound to see some interesting posts in the next two weeks :)….Feel free to add your own 5 cents worth :)….that’s what makes it fun!

@Shirukii: One thing I’ve noticed in your Kanon posts….. an episode rarely receives a perfect 10……what was the .5 missing from 21??? Ayu-goodness?

It’ll be interesting to see your rankings for the ladies of Kanon….Fight-o! Da yo? ;)

    @ everyone:

Mai Otome Zwei 2 is fan-subbed! Yay! :)…I know some consider it an overated anime series, but whatever I like the new OVA’s so far :)

I post this seperately in case I got pwned in the last post, so i can make some replies:
    -
@ Shirukii: Yup, CS major is painful, but at least its fun (especially for a 66%-geek like me)
    -
    @ Avisch: Hurray~ More people = more love = more fun comments = more… i’ll think of more =P
    -
@ shelsea: Woohoo fellow Mai fan~ *shakes hands*
    -
@ Kanon_fan82: I’ve seen the latest Mai Otome Zwei, its actually not bad considering how well they handled the scenes, in fact i thought it was much better than the series. Meh probably just my wierd taste and all.

  20. on 27 Feb 2007 at 8:37 pmShirukii

@ Kanon_fan82: Technically all episodes are what I would consider 10s, but I have to leave a margin in the case of those odd few episodes that REALLY stand above all the rest.

@ Nightingale: LOL, Kanon trojan, ahahaha that’s brilliant. Indeed comp sci is major pain, I have a few friends going down that road. I’m in mechanical engineering myself, interesting but the amount of formulas and concepts shoved into our puny minds is torture T_T

As for Mai Otome Zwei 02, I thought it was alright. I liked 01 a lot better, the plot in 02 kind of took the backseat to random hilarity.
