Death Note 13

What they were probably thinking
Ok, so the imouto’s comment is probably just my wishful thinking…but a guy can dream right? My parents would lecture me to death if I brought a girl sporting the gothic lolita look, regardless of how hawt she is.
Anyways, I digress, after Death Note was licensed with all the drama about legal downloads and such, I was fearing its status in my schedule due to Live Evil and Toriyama dropping the series. However, a few new groups have taken it upon themselves to pick up the slack. With the help of their developing skills and my own knowledge of the Japanese language filling in the gaps, I’m in business again.
This episode continues the investigation into the fake Kira (Misa), who has sent a cryptic message to Light, requesting a meeting. Light goes to check it out and ends up being identified by Misa due to an oversight concerning how the Shinigami eyes work.
This prompts more video communications, Misa sends a tape revealing that she’s seen and identified Light. L’s suspicions of Light being Kira are multiplied a tenfold as Light was the one investigating the possible meeting places mentioned in the message. The police then release a tape to bait Misa, pleading that she turn herself in before Kira finds and kills her.
Misa instead seeks out Light, knowing his name, his address soon followed. Light is quite obviously shocked when he sees the fake Kira standing on his doorstep, a girl and idol no less, but is forced to accept it when Misa shows him her shinigami. Light passes her off as his girlfriend, he conveniently lied and said he had one not much earlier.

In Light’s room (must be soundproof or something) Misa confesses to Light. Apparently her parents were killed and the murderers were set free, but they ended up being among the criminals Kira killed. Light immediately begins to analyze Misa, interrogating her as to how she went about taking care of the tapes and other clues she sent to the police in an attempt to contact him. After she proves herself not to be as dumb as he originally thought, as well as being devoted and possessing the shinigami eyes, Light agrees to be her boyfriend, despite not having true feelings for her.

Thoughts
Damnit, my summaries are starting to get lengthy again. *shrugs* Oh well.
I thought this episode was kind of boring, I was really excited when L started going to Light’s university because I thought it would mean a lot of mind games between the two. But introducing Misa into the picture has brought the interaction between L and Light to a minimum.
Sure L’s still trying to solidify his suspicion that Light is indeed Kira, and Light is still trying to find ways to tip the investigation in his favor and find a way to kill L. However, the bait and chase dynamic the two had at the beginning of their rivalry has all but vanished. Not to say that I dislike Misa, and maybe now that she’s completely under Light’s influence, things will change. But for this arc, the suspenseful battles of wit and intellect have been rendered non-existent =(
Speaking of Light, he’s an evil bastard. Not that I don’t like him, it’s just that his ideals have changed so much from the beginning of the series. He started out as a righteous law student with aspirations to join the NPA, and now he’s a selfish serial killer who wants to become a God. He’s strayed so far from his ideals that he is concentrating on killing L and all those who oppose him moreso than trying to rid the world of criminals.

Even the concept itself is bogus, if he created his supposed utopia, it would be one based on fear of persecution. It’s been proven that totalitarian governments just don’t work, revolution occurs and the balance of power is restored. Even with the Death Note, Light’s ability to fight a resistance would either end in failure or the extinction of the human race.

On another note, Misa’s voice no longer reminds me of Haruhi. Her earlier appearances always brought Haruhi to mind whenever she spoke, but her voice has changed just enough so I distinguish between the two. I think it’s because in this episode she wasn’t being spunky and arrogant, instead coming off as childish and emotional, aspects that were lacking in Haruhi. Kudos to Aya-chan for being such a versatile seiyuu.
Some randomness:

I have that shirt! =D
