Sayuri reveals her true moe soundbite
Episode rating: 9/10
Another Mai centric episode for great justice, also more love for Sayuri who is quickly rising in my ranks despite my initial dislike for her.
Sayuri and Kyon’ichi manage to avoid Mai’s expulsion by passing off the sword act as part of the program for the dance, this is backed up by Kitagawa for credibility. The three are later threatened by the prick president of the student counsel, but is quickly scared off by Mai defending Sayuri.
Later that night Kyon’ichi brings Ayu to see Mai to ask about Ayu’s missing item, Mai seems to be able to tell what Ayu really is but uses spoiler tags to hide the truth in an onslaught of ambiguity.
The rest of the episode is dedicated to Mai fighting off demons with the help of Kyon’ichi, whom she personally trained by throwing crap at him. And a SayuriXKyon’ichi de-tou where they pick out a ridiculously large stuffed animal for Mai’s birthday.
EDIT: KyoAni makes a continuity mistake! On my second watch through of Kanon 13 I noticed that during the Sayuri’s flashback to when they were ichinensei (freshmen), they were still wearing blue ribbons which supposedly indicates a sannensei (senior). Ichinensei are supposed to wear green ribbons. Tsk tsk.
EDIT to the EDIT: Skane says: With regards to the ribbon, it is not a mistake. According to the gamers, the ribbon colours are done in rotation. So you keep your ribbon colour until you graduate. You got lucky this time KyoAni D=
Thoughts
Pretty good ep, though definitely not as good as the last. There were some noticeable still scenes where KyoAni recouped some of the animation cost from last week’s waltz, which is understandable. But overall the animation didn’t suffer as much as I thought it would, the demon scenes were still done to a KyoAni standard.
Nayuki is getting screwed in KyoAni’s version thus far, she now exists solely as comic relief. What else besides acting like a sleep deprived university student has she done for the past 10 episodes? (Being Kyon’ichi’s slave and personal ATM machine doesn’t count) I’m no Nayuki fanboy, but this is a little harsh, at some point the moe effect of her sleeping in class and running into things is going to wear off. I hope she gets some goodness when her arc comes around or KyoAni will have to hire Ayu fanboys to wage war against the Nayuki camp onslaught at their headquarters.
I never thought I’d say this…but…*looks around nervously* SAYURI FTW! This episode rockets her over Shiori who has become a walking pharmacy lost much of her “not so sick/sad girl in the snow” appeal. Pikyuu~!

Cheers.
Ooooh, I see, that makes sense, rather than having to buy a new ribbon every year. Feh. You win this round KyoAni *shakes fist* Thanks for the clarification.
“Nayuki is getting screwed in KyoAni’s version thus far, she now exists solely as comic relief.”
**** CONTAINS SPOILERS *****
The problem with Nayuki is that, in the game, her story doesn’t really start until Yuuichi has disentangled himself from all the other female leads. She and her relationship with Yuuichi develop, in the game, only when Yuuichi finds himself isolated from everyone except for her; until that point, she IS only comic relief.
If it seems like KyoAni have shafted Nayuki, it is only because Toei endowed her with a significance and a depth of character she never possessed in the game. I see a lot of Bloggers referring to the Ayu/ Nayuki story arc of Kanon, but this is more a construct of the Toei version of the anime than something that existed in the original game. Nayuki’s jealousy, her role in ‘rescuing’ Ayu, etc, are all Toei constructs.
lol at your edits xD
@ Tim: Bah, the Toei version is being slowly tarnished, though it was good enough to build hype for the remake, I’ll give it that.
@ Danny: Damn KyoAni, I thought I had them D=
