Kanon 03-04

=3

With the last two episodes, we finally get to see the second freeloader get some screentime. Makoto goes along her lolikit ways, always fighting with Yuuichi [I literally almost wrote “Kyonichi” here by accident] and being defeated. As to be expected, plenty of Ayu time too. Where’s my Nayuki? T_T

Summary:
Having the mysterious girl pass out infront of Yuuichi previously, Yuuichi picks her up and carries the loli home. Upon awakening, the girl reveals that she doesn’t remember anything about herself. The only thing she knows is that she hates Yuuichi. Without much of a clue of anything, Akiko agrees to let the girl stay as a freeloader, much to Yuuichi’s dismay. So begins the constant fights between this girl and Yuuichi. A slap here, some konnyaku there, and you have the makings of a perfect loving relationship.

Next day at school, Yuuichi manages to steal Nayuki’s notes, since he’s a fool that can’t keep up in class. Wandering his eyes outside, he finds Shiori and runs out to meet her. They engage in pleasantries, forming the fact that Shiori is actually a student of the school. We learn that Shiori is physically weak, and that she is constantly sick. After finding out that she’s waiting for somebody, the two split off, exchanging names.

Classes finish, and Yuuichi is found wandering the streets alone. Who else but Ayu comes along, with a running glomp =3 A couple of uguu~s later, and they’re off eating taiyaki and looking for Ayu’s “important thing”. The only catch is that she doesn’t remember what this important thing is. So begins a hunt for the unknown.

They run around all day, with Ayu finding a lot of new stores she never saw before. They split off, and Yuuichi returns home, where he’s greeted by Makoto. Looks like the girl finally remembered her name.

Hitting episode four now, it starts with a flashback of when Yuuichi and Ayu first met. Ayu’s still crying, so Yuuichi gets a taiyaki for her, as any good kid would do. Before Yuuichi leaves, he promises Ayu with a yubikiri that they’ll eat taiyaki again.

Ending the flashback, Yuuichi wakes up to find Makoto trying to pull a prank. A bit of backfire later, and it’s the next day. Yuuichi brings lunch to Nayuki at school and sticks around a bit to watch. On his way out, he talks with Kaori, and she says she just didn’t want to be at home. As well, Yuuichi should treat Nayuki well since he owes everything to her.

Yuuichi bumps into Akiko, and then the two of them bump into Ayu. Ayu follows them back home, and she helps Yuuichi unpack. Makoto helps out, however unwillingly. After they finish, Ayu leaves with a bit of strange air between her and Makoto.

Nayuki comes back from practice, and she wants her homework. Unfortunately, Yuuichi stole that at school, then proceeded to forget it there. He goes back to get it, where he meets Mai, just standing there.

Thoughts:
Ayu’s little uguu fight with Yuuichi was nice, but I hope it doesn’t come up too often. Her reactions to all the new stores and new technologies were strange, to say the least. It just didn’t feel very believable. Most other people would freak at all the new changes, yet she took it so calmly. Oh well, I’m willing to overlook that. Her jumping glomp right before the fight made up for it.

Meanwhile, I’m absolutely loving Makoto. Her constant fighting with Yuuichi is always fun, and her always losing only adds to the enjoyment. The whole midnight snack at the refrigerator scene was awesome because of her reaction. I think that secretly [or not so secretly], I like the antics because I want Yuuichi to get owned by her. He needs a good beating now and then to keep him in line, which is exactly where Makoto can fit in. But Makoto isn’t just about fighting, there’s much more. She only fights because it’s her only link to her past, a sad story. She’s serious when she needs to be, but completely crazy energetic when she isn’t. I love it.

When Ayu and Makoto were helping Yuuichi unpack all his stuff, there was a strange atmosphere between them. My only guess is that they know something’s up with the other person [which is OmGz spoiliars, so I’ll skip that. Even tho my posts are already ridden with spoilers. Hmm, caught on the issue.]. I do believe that was the first significant meeting between Yuuichi’s girls, unless I’m forgetting something completely obvious.

It didn’t feel like Nayuki got a lot of screentime. Nothing compared to Ayu or Makoto. Makes me sad. The only thing that really happened was her fighting with Yuuichi over her homework. Which makes me dislike Yuuichi. Going against Nayuki like that… bah. But no, seriously, the way he handled the situation was just rather mean to Nayuki. She comes to his door, knocks on it, and all he asks is if she’s here to give him a massage. Once she says no, he tries to close the door right on her face. You gotta be kidding me. Kyon’s way better than this impostor. Makoto better get Yuuichi good.

Mai didn’t get any good screentime either, but that doesn’t make me sad. At all. Shiori had some, but not all that much. Nothing was really revealed about her, and I guess it’s going to stay that way for a while. Sad girls in snow demand to be mysterious.

Things of win:
-Boku… Ayu Ayu janai mo.
- Makoto
- Makoto’s fights with Yuuichi

Things of lose:
- No Nayuki screentime
- Yuuichi’s attitude to Nayuki

Yuuichi’s evil. Boo.

Yuuichi getting what he deserves

Clearly not enough screentime.

Nothing like taiyaki to start off a friendship

And sorry about how late this post is/how slow my posting is. ‘Tis a shame, but real life likes to steal anime time. Curses.

But Yuuichi does go back to school to get Nayuki’s book for her. Not to mention it’s the middle of the night in an winter environment.

Sure, he did get her book back eventually, but he sure put up a fight. Meanwhile Kyon picked up a heater in the winter too, and he had to walk up Hell Hill! So once again, Kyon > Kyonichi. Nayuki shouldn’t even bother with him anymore, bah.

Kyuuichi has regressed to the point where I am actually rooting for Ayu.

Through 5 episodes, it’s certainly not living up to its hype. In the drama/romance genre, it’s being lapped by Asatte no Houkou. Heck, it may not even be the best H-game/dating sim adaption of the season (Gift ~ Eternal Rainbow being the best of the rest).

Maybe, just maybe, the makers are going for the D.C. ~ Da Capo approach – go with inane, fluffy comedy for 15 episodes then bombard the viewer with non-stop heavy drama. Not sure whether this will work, however… considering Kyuuichi isn’t quite as likeable as Jyunichi, and Ayu certainly isn’t as well defined as Nemu.

Whoo! Another DC~ fan. I completely agree that that Nemu was a much more defined character than Ayu. After all she barely had any competition and the whole series was dedicated to building her as a more suitable choice than Sakura, Kotori…et al.

I also agree that Kanon isn’t the best H-game adaptation of all time. There are many that stand atop it in terms of drama and plot.

However, I do think that it is the best in this fall season. Gift, while good, is looking like a remake of DC and lacks a lot of originality whereas Kanon is adding a lot more content compared to the original. This along with the improved animation and length make it superior to Gift or any other harem this season.

And finally, Kyon’ichi. This guy is my idol, he is a much better lead than Juunichi, who was often indecisive and mean. Whereas Kyon’ichi is sarcastic, funny, confident and only sometimes mean, but often with good cause.

In conclusion: Kanon = good, but not perfect. Nemu > Ayu but Kyon’ichi > Juunichi

Opinionated of course, but isn’t everything.

I guess Kyuuichi is one of those hit-and-miss personalities – you either love him for his coolness and invulnerability, or you seem him as a jerk. Not unlike Suginami in that aspect, though such a personality is usually reserved for supporting characters.

Nevertheless, having such a main character does open up some new possibilities – there’s some perverse pleasure in seeing an overinflated personality brought down to his knees. And the storyline does guarantee that he will be brought down a notch or two.

The question is – will I survive long enough to see Kyuuichi’s fall?

Yes, yes you will ^^ …or else feel the wrath of KyoAni, who sends sad girls covered in snow to all those who drop their series, only to have them kill you with poison tamagoyaki when you least expect it. Happened to my friend when he dropped AIR =D

Well I didn’t hate Yuuichi before, but I’m starting to. He just seems so disrespectful in some aspects. Mainly aimed at Nayuki lol. The difficulty he gave her when she wanted her notes was just uncalled for. Meanwhile, I enjoy the antics between him and Makoto, even though that would come off as mean too. The only difference, I would guess, is that I wouldn’t imagine Nayuki would slap Yuuichi with all her might. Woo Makoto!

I hope Nayuki stands up to Kyuuichi at some point… my opinion of this show will flip 180 degrees if Kyuuichi gets what’s coming to him.

It just seems wrong to have a big grin on my face while Kyuuichi is crying his eyes out – but unless he cleans up his act, that’s what will probably happen.

God I loved that *wink* from Naiyuki!
