Haruhi Desktop Accessories

Sorry about the title, I’m REALLY lost on how to name this stuff. What I’m trying to say is that it’s Suzumiya Haruhi and Nagato Yuki… umm, desktop buddies. Alright, I give up trying to name this stuff, since I clearly can’t. Here’s a pic of my desktop, and of what I’m trying to say to you:

Obviously, in the lower right corner, we can see two Haruhis and a Yuki. The two Haruhis may or may not be the same, I can’t tell. They just may be displaying different emotions right now. Or actually, upon further thought, they’re probably just different version numbers? I dunno.

..And yes, they ARE animated. Haruhi regularly changes expressions, while Yuki… well, she reads. But she looks up from her books enough to ease my Yukiism. Other things of note is that they can be scaled to be smaller [they're actually at the largest size right now in that picture], and they DO stay on top of other windows. So by no means are they JUST restricted to the desktop, but rather you can look at them whenever you please =p For the pic, I opened three instances of the program to show all the characters, so normally it’s just one person at a time.

In the lower left of the picture of my desktop, there’s a graph there. It’s part of the program [which I'll refer to as "MacFace" from now on, since that should be the name. Go figure.], but I can’t really figure out what it’s telling me. The lower graph no doubt shows my CPU usage, but the first graph I’m completely lost at. If any of you wonderful readers can figure it out, it would be awesome if you could tell me.

What’s that? You want me to stop stalling and just give you the program already? Nah, I figure if I interested you this long, I’ll tease you for a bit longer =p Wait, what did you say? You’re going to boycott AniAri and never read us again, unless I give you the file right now? You’re the boss o.o

Pretty straightforward. Extract anywhere you want, then run MacFace.exe. Some strange face should appear, a graph, and a system tray icon. Right click the new tray icon, and then select the third option. It should open a new options window, where you can select your character. I included both Haruhis and Yuki in there, just click once and you’re good to go. The first slider bar is your transparency, your second slider bar is size of the character. The little checkbox option… I have no idea what that does. Again, if anyone could shed some light on that, awesomeness to you. It’s not a complicated program to navigate, nothing a little trial and error can’t figure out.

EDIT: Okay, figured out what the checkbox does [but thanks to kei-clone regardless!]. Essentially if you check it off, it’ll lock the character so that you can’t drag and reposition MacFace anymore. The advantage to this is that when you DO try to click it, you will click what’s beneath it. That is… you will click as if MacFace wasn’t there. Couple that with reasonable transparency, and you have Haruhi and Yuki that won’t interfere with your computer use. I love that feature, because I always thought that a large problem with things such as this would be that if there’s something underneath the character that you want to click, you would have to move the character out of the way first or something. That was always bothersome and stupid so I never used desktop buddies. But now it’s solved, hurrahs. On a slightly different note, yes, there is a Mac version of this. To be expected if the thing’s called MacFace, right? It of course can be found on Satoru’s blog. [/edit]

I originally found it off Kurikinton Fox’s blog, the one that played amazing versions of God Knows and Lost My Music in the previous post. He didn’t seem to find a Mikuru, and unfortunately, I haven’t either. Sorry Mikuru-ists =(

    I think the top graph is for CPU usage, but I’m not sure how it differs from memory usage… Urm. ^^;;;

    Haven’t tried this out but i remember seeing something like this a long time ago. You installed these programs and you’d have anime characters on your desktop and they’d be doing stuff like sitting on top of the windows you’ve got open, stuff like that.

    Checkbox locks the character btw, so it can’t be dragged.

    Rets, it’s just Haruhi desktop stuff. What’s wrong with staring at Yuki all day anyways? =3

    Maiku, yeah, there are plenty of window sitters out there, of characters sitting on your windows. However, the designs never really appealed to me, so I never bothered with them. But this… this is Haruhi, I couldn’t pass that up!

    That’s Rainlendar, found here. It’s a pretty nice program, I really like it.

    Though notice all my midterms and stuff this week T_T But I still felt it was my duty to post this as soon as possible <3 Wooo Yukiism forever!

    Whoo, midterm week, the ultimate suckage. I just killed off one of mine, I have another tomorrow and I have the one I’ve been fearing for a long time on Wednesday. Wish these two slacker anime fans luck everyone XD

    I’m using a similar program to rainlendar, I just switched over to it though, because although it lacks proper support for a clock, resource consumption is better.

    Also, Haruhi > Mikuru > Yuki, I don’t care if Saimoe suggests otherwise =P. Though I think we can all agree that Desu should go die =(

    For those who still don’t know:

    Top graph- Not too sure, might be RAM usage.

    Bottom- CPU usage.

    There’s another graph (at least in the mac one) that states how much hard drive space you currently have.

    As to what this program exactly is, I think it’s an indicator for how much you’re stressing your computer. As in, if there’s a lot of free memory, it’s happy, and if not, it’s sad (of course, this can change as the face is customizable).

    Hello, I have a problem with it.
    I have Microsoft .NET Framework: 1.1.4322.573 and Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600.0(Windows XP), But I keep getting this “Unable to find an entry point named GetSystemTimes in DLL kernel32.dll” error. I have tried all three versions of MacfaceforWin, but none of them work. Please help, thanks in advance.

    It sounds like you have a registry error problem, not a problem with the actualy program. GetSystemTimes is a registry file that determines cpu usage, since this program wants access to that file to display the graph and runs into an error, it doesn’t start up.

    A system restore to before this error happened or a registry cleaning program should fix it.

    I’m guessing that the 1st graph determines their emotion, because when I get a long black bar Haruhi gets “mad”(the nerve thingy on her head) and when I get a long gray bar Yuki flips her book. Anyways, such a cool program! :D

    I actually still have it on my computer. Unfortunately I’m on vacation for a few more weeks, so I won’t be able to upload it anytime soon. If you remind me or I somehow remember, I’ll upload it again for you.
