Papercraft
September 17th, 2006 by Soda
So I recently undertook a new challenge that I have never attempted before. And well, judging from the title of the post, I’d say it’s pretty safe to say I took up making papercrafts. In case you don’t know, papercrafts are essentially 3d origami. You take some paper, cut it up, fold it how you want, then glue it together to make a little model. There are a lot of impressive papercrafts, and with any luck, I’ll be able to show my papercrafts without embarrassment. But for now, this is my first, and I’m rather happy with it.
So here’s the story. One night, I was kind of bored. With the endless supply of anime, this blog, and university, you’d expect that I’d have plenty of things to keep myself occupied with. Apparently not. In any case, I came across the template for making Chiyo-chichi, from Azumanga Daioh. For those who don’t know who that is, that’s just a sign that you need to go watch Azu =p Funniest and most random things ever happen on that show, but alas, that’s another post. Back to the papercraft, this is the first time I’ve ever made one, and I think actually went rather well considering. So without further ado, I present the craziness known as Chiyo’s father:

Are you calling me a fake Chiyo-chichi?
I’m assuming most papercraft templates come without instructions, and this was no exception. Stupidly enough, the arms were quite some trouble. I had no idea where I should put it, because everywhere I visioned it would be placed made Chiyo-chichi rather odd looking. Not to say he looks normal, but I mean odder than normal. I finally just said “screw it”, and proceeded to place the arms wherever I pleased. I must say, I’m pleased.
Yes, to those wondering, he IS fully 3d. I never have a picture of his back, but it’s definitely there. He’s just symmetrical, so really, his back looks exactly like a faceless front. Now since he’s a fully 3d character, I had a LOT of trouble closing him off. I started putting together his head, starting from his ears to his face. Then I started working on his legs, working up from there. Now I had two halves to him, and it was just a total headache trying to make those halves stick together when all you can do is lightly hold onto each half. Can’t apply any pressure or anything, lest you crush him to death. Speaking of which, I DID crush him once by accident, but luckily he wasn’t fully assembled yet. After some cursing and poking, he returned to normal, with just about zero battle scars.

The fake cat hanging with my real cats <3
If anybody has other Azumanga papercrafts, I’d love if you could point me into the direction of where to find some templates =D Till then, I’ll still be looking for a new model to make.

(Looks like my first reply here got eaten)
A quick search turned up what I think is the template that Soda used for his papercraft monstrosity. It doesn’t look all that complicated, just a series of mountain folds, but like Soda said, the trick is likely getting it all together.
Anyway, you can find the template here:
